Review: THE SOLDIER by Grace Burrowes

Review: THE SOLDIER by Grace Burrowes

This Regency era battle of wits, wills, and the sexes features a wily duke determined to see the succession of his line secured. The duke can’t force his sons to marry, but he can make their lives miserable until they do. Resisting his pressure, each gentleman holds out for true love.

The Soldier features Devlin St. Just, oldest, but illegitimate, son of the duke of Moreland, who arrives at his new estate weary in body and spirit only to find it is in no better shape than he is. Worse, the previous owner’s bastard daughter, five-year-old Winnie Farnum, has become a fixture on the property, and also Devlin’s responsibility. He dragoons Winnie’s cousin, Emmaline Farnum, into serving as a temporary governess, only to discover that she can nurture him too, in ways no other woman ever has before.

Devlin’s battle-worn spirit calls to Emmie, but Emmie is keeping devastating secrets from him. Revealing what Emmie has hidden becomes Devlin’s mission, because he knows that if only he can find out the truth, it will change everything, and they all three might then have their only chance at ever finding love and happiness...

My Review:

The Plot:

For the newly titled Earl of Rosecroft, it would appear upon his arrival to the rural wilderness of Yorkshire that Devlin St. Just's estate is badly in need of repair, much like his own tattered soul. Haunted by the brutal memories of his service to the crown against Bonaparte, Devlin barely clings to his sanity. Luckily, an immediate distraction presents itself in the form of a sassy five-year-old child and her curvaceous self-imposed guardian who smells intriguingly like freshly baked bread. Thunderstruck by both females, Devlin soon finds himself feeling a previously never before felt desire: he wants to keep them.

Emmaline Farnum is an outsider in Yorkshire. Tainted not only by her self employment as a baker, but by the scandalous reputations of both her mother and her aunt, Emmie's content with her lot in life except for when it comes to her precocious young cousin, Winnie. The previous Earl of Rosecroft's by-blow, Winnie's only remaining family is Emmie but with her rightful place being at Rosecroft, Emmie is unwilling to become too associated with the child for fear that her family ties will blacken Winnie's social well being. But with the recent death of the previous earl, Winnie is all alone at Rosecroft except for the newly minted Devlin St. Just. Agreeing with Devlin that Winnie's transition should be as smooth as possible, Emmie agrees to remove her business to Rosecroft and live there until a suitable governess can be hired but she's ill-prepared for the bursting compassion and desire she feels for the world weary earl.

It's not long before Devlin fancies himself in love Emmie. The delectable confections and smells she brings to his home, the ease with which he finds himself confiding in her, and the family atmosphere she brings along with Winnie have all brought new meaning to Devlin's life. While he still suffers from setbacks of post traumatic stress, Devlin slowly looses his desolate uncertainty of never being able to function wholly. But when his proposal is met with rejection, Devlin soon uncovers a backbone of steel within Emmie that might very well doom both their lives to eternal emptiness.

The Heroine:

Stubborn to her very core and determined that Winnie will have the life of privilege and security that she deserves, Emmie will sacrifice everything including her very happiness to ensure the well being of her young cousin who has only ever known disappointment. Certain that her presence in Winnie's life will damage her cousin's future social acceptance, Emmie does what she can to steel her heart from her decision that will ultimately deprive her of Winnie's companionship and most of all, of Devlin St. Just.

Never intending to fall in love with the beautiful earl, Emmie is helpless to stop her desire. Knowing that cultivating any romantic relationship with the earl will end in heartbreak, Emmie does what she can to avoid Devlin but her heart's and her body's need will not be ignored. Angered with herself after every amorous incident, Emmie knows that she needs to remove herself not only from Rosecroft, but from Yorkshire. She will never subject Devlin nor Winnie to the taint of her family. In her heart, they deserve better.

The Hero:

Dropped on the doorstep as the bastard son of the Duke of Moreland, Devlin St. Just has never reconciled his soul with the abandonment of his mother at the tender age of five. Forever jealous of the easy love between his half brothers and sisters with his stepmother, Devlin has always set himself apart from his family as a means of self preservation. Now, haunted by his violent tour on the continent as well as the loss of two brothers in battle, Devlin is more distant than ever. Repairing to Yorkshire and the earldom his father arranged for him, Devlin feels both angst and relief with his new home. Distant enough from the social whirlwind he despises, yet unfamiliar enough to spark his bad memories, Devlin throws himself into his duties and his one true love: horses.

Never once anticipating that two females would impact his life so thoroughly, Devlin doesn't mind the distraction they present but rather revels in it. Immediately relieved to find his body's renewed stirrings toward the opposite sex, Devlin can't get enough of his new resident cook and temporary guardian of his young ward. Emmie is a dream made reality and Devlin doesn't wait to proclaim his love nor his desire to take her to wife. But when his request is met with rejection, Devlin is too much a man to ask again but no less of a man when trying to do what he can to secure Emmie's happiness in any small way. Her determination to put distance between him and Winnie leaves a sour taste but Devlin will do what he must to respect Emmie's wishes even if it means signing himself to lifetime of emptiness.

My Final Thoughts:

While wistful and at times, deeply emotional, THE SOLDIER lacked reader engagement as well as having the misfortune of showcasing a confounding heroine and a hero who never asks the burning questions.

Swinging back and forth, Emmie Farnum is an irritating pendulum. Burning hot than cold she caves to her body's desires only to wake with indignant anger come morning. Knowingly using Devlin to soothe an ache while also harboring the determination to abandon him, Emmie, for all she's worth, can't hide the truth of her heart's desire but she can hide the real cowardly reason for wanting to leave. Beyond that, she's willing to abandon a young child who idolizes and loves her for the worst kind of reason: the selfish need to selfless. Finally, not only does Emmie have little self worth, she lacks trust and only manages to reconcile herself to Devlin after she's given up all hope and the strength to pursue the path she's set. Instead she's hurt those she loves for the absurd notion of protecting them for the burden of her watery-grey reputation.

Devlin, conversely, is a lovely hero with an incredibly kind and forgiving heart. He could give a fig about society's thoughts where he's concerned. Trying to do what's best for a very young girl and the woman he loves, Devlin exudes the most patient of hearts. He truly deserves more from Emmie but instead he's on the receiving end of her tedious and painful ways. Still, frustration mounted for this reader when serious questions begged to be demanded and thus answered. Instead, as perhaps fodder to propel the plot, Devlin is never direct in his concerns. His actions are slightly out of character too since Devlin is so direct in all other circumstances...

However, there is some light at the end of this dark tunnel and that's Winnie. She's such a sassy little thing and there's no hoodwinking this little smarty pants. As with Devlin, Winnie deserves more from Emmie. In her cowardliness, Emmie does what she can to keep Winnie in the dark about her plans to leave Yorkshire which is futile given the fact that the girl can sniff out a lie from three miles away. Truly the life of the novel, Winnie steals the show from page one and I relished every scene that she was apart of.

Likely to receive mixed reviews, THE SOLDIER is saddled with numerous issues with a few thankful endearing qualities. Boasting a wonderfully kind hero and a lovable child star, many might overlook the irritating qualities of its heroine. Sadly, the novel simply didn't work for me but I am willing to give Burrowes another try with her upcoming THE VIRTUOSO featuring Devlin's charming younger brother Valentine.

What's Up Wednesday! (17)

What's Up Wednesday is a little weekly post that I'm hosting. Just something short and sweet about what's new with me, the romance realm and what ever else strikes my fancy.

So, what's up with me?

Well, big surprise. None of the 500 million people predicted by Christian radio host, Harold Camping, were taken up unto God on the supposed day of the Rapture. And people are pissed too. Check out the article HERE if you're interested.

And now, a rant about the weather because I can't think of anything else. My apologies to those that read ahead.

I don't know how to wear layers. My closet consists of winter and summer outfits. However, like the tourists that think May and June are the perfect months to visit San Diego, I forget as much as they do about our May Grey and June Gloom weather patterns. Here's a typical day weather wise in San Diego during these months: Morning - marine layer has moved in overnight dropping temps to the high 50's and low 60's with grey cloud cover. Fast forward to Noon - Marine layer has burned off leaving sunny skies and temps in the high 70's to high 80's. Evening - Wind picks up bringing temps back down to the brisk lower 60's which feel extra cold after the hot, summer-like afternoon. Then repeat. How the hell to I dress for a day like this? So, without fail, I'm late to work by about five to ten minutes due to laborious efforts spent in my closet to find something to wear that will suit all weather variations during these spring months. July can't get here soon enough!

Weekend Movie Review!

"The Mechanic" featuring Jason Statham and Ben Foster. As your typical Jason Statham movie, there's no new surprises in "The Mechanic" but Statham is slightly more seedier than usual. A specialized hit man with a unique set of skills to make a murder ruled as an accident, Statham's requisite detachment is lost when he assassinates his mentor. Attacked by a glitched conscience, Statham takes on an apprentice who happens to be his mentor's son (Foster). When foul play is discovered and Statham learns that he murdered his mentor for the wrong reasons, all hell breaks loose. Touching upon all the Statham requisites, there's plenty of blood, violence and language. While obviously a man's movie, I happen to be fan of Statham's for some reason. I'm thinkin' it's the accent. All in all, it wasn't a bad film but certainly not great either. Rating: 2.5/5

"The Rite" featuring Anthony Hopkins and Colin O'Donoghue. Nary a year goes by without some stigmata/exorcism movie making the rounds. Only difference here is that "The Rite" happens to have some clout with heavyweight Anthony Hopkins. Inspired by true events, O'Donoghue, a US seminary student, takes a course in exorcism at the Vatican in Rome. One vow away from becoming a priest, O'Donoghue's faith has been shaken for a long time. In truth, he doesn't know if he believes in God or the devil but he certainly doesn't believe in demon possession. When his doubts become known, he's directed to work with Father Lucas (Hopkins), a highly respected and experienced exorcist. And that's when his teachings really begin. Hopkins once again reaffirms that he can do creepy and he can do it well. Not super scary or thought provoking, "The Rite" is rather a gothic tragedy, one that I surprisingly enjoyed. Rating: 2.5/5

What's new in romance?

Ugh, I got nothing. What about you guys? Any one know of any good romance author/book gossip?

Single Title/Series: CHOSEN BY BLOOD is book one in the Para-Ops series.

Cover Thoughts: While not a favorite of mine, the cover does accomplish its base goal of reflecting the tone of the written contents with acute attention paid to the complex mash up of Urban Fantasy and Paranormal elements. I was also pleasantly surprised that the medallion featured on the cover model had weighted significance within the novel. Its definitely a nice touch that ties the outer and inner contents.

Origin: I received a published release copy of CHOSEN BY BLOOD from the author in exchange for an honest review.

My Review:

The Plot:

When the secret was unveiled that the creatures of nightmares and legends did in fact exist, humans immediately enacted every force in their arsenal to protect themselves from the new unknown. Now, five years after the Second Civil War has ended, a thin precarious coat of civility exists between humans and Otherborn. In fact, war may once again be upon the horizon as the world watches the vampire population starve into extinction after a man-made vaccine inoculated human blood from a vamp's thirst. In a final bid to uphold the tenuous peace, the FBI has created a specialized task force called Para-Ops. Their mission: regain a stolen antidote that may be the key to counteracting the effects of the vaccine that is polluting the vamp's sole food source.

Human FBI Special Agent, Felicia Locke, has warred endlessly with her consuming desire and its resulting guilt from the moment she laid eyes on her best friend's husband and fell helplessly in love. Now, having tragically lost her beautiful friend to senseless murder, Felicia's mind is still dead set against any romantic chance for her and the luscious half-breed vampire clan leader, Knox Devereaux. Truth be told, there's many reasons why the two can't enter into a relationship and each one is more significant than the last. Most importantly, Felicia will not disabuse the memory of her friend by consummating the guilty love that she's felt for her husband. Two, Felicia's human and knowing Knox's deep desire to prove to his clan that he's nothing like his traitorous human father, he most certainly will marry another vampire as the vamp council demands.  In vamp culture, few marry for love. Like a throw back to Victorian principles, marriages are arranged for the benefit of the clan and no one is more dedicated to duty than Knox and Felicia will be damned before she becomes his mistress. She wants marriage and a family and she'll settle for nothing less. But when Knox steps up his passionate pursuit, Felicia's hold on her principles are quickly slipping.

Knox has hungered desperately for Felicia from the very moment he laid eyes on her and he ceased to ever make a secret of his love, even with regards to his own wife. Having a higher set of morals than most of her human kind, Felicia has been steadfast in her denial of him and their love but that's going to end once and for all. Knox is done waiting and he's been offered the perfect opportunity to claim Felicia as well as save his clan from starvation. After being approached by the FBI to head a new Para-Ops team, Knox wastes little time debating his decision. His clan is dying and he'll do whatever is necessary to save them even if it means working with the very same people that developed the despicable vaccine that doomed vampires to begin with. In addition to his agreement to lead, Knox wants Felicia and the FBI will deliver on that demand but not in the way Knox anticipated. Instead of the FBI re-assigning her to the Dome, his clan's home where Knox can be certain of her safety, Felicia is assigned to Para-Ops.

Knowing that Knox is bound to marry again given his duty to his people and their need to re-populate, Felicia is done wasting more time without Knox when he'll soon be lost to her forever. Not buying Knox's attempt to install her as security detail at the already tightly secured Dome, Felicia asks to be assigned to Para-Ops. Her hostage negotiating skills are bound to be of use when a group of hostile and distrusting Otherborn operatives are thrust together and are asked to accomplish a team goal. But when she and Knox finally give in to their burning need, Felicia realizes that Knox has never truly known or trusted who she is. While it's true that he can't deny his soul's call to her own, it doesn't stop him from discriminating or distrusting Felicia's human DNA despite the fact that he himself is half human. The taint of his traitorous father delves deeper within Knox than either him or Felicia realized and if he doesn't take control of his wayward emotions, he won't just lose Felicia, he'll lose her forever.

The Heroine:

Loyal, brave, and steadfast, anyone would be lucky to call Felicia Locke friend. In addition, her quick thinking, fighting skills, and stellar verbal sparring make her perfect for the FBI and Para-Ops. Unlike most humans, Felicia was raised, has befriended, and fights for the Otherborn creatures. Given the chance to not only help Otherborn kind, but more to the point, to help her lost vampire friend by eradicating the scourge her own race has heaped onto vamps to assuage their fear is paramount. But even beyond that, Felicia is aching for Knox. When the one and only opportunity presents itself, that being Para-Ops, Felicia can't let it pass. Knox will uphold his duty and soon marry a vampire as his race demands, but right now, in this moment he's unattached. While there are still several barriers that may never be breached where their love is concerned, the immediate one holding Felicia back is the fear that she'll never get enough of Knox. That scratching the itch won't lesson its burn but forever inflame it.

The Hero:

A born leader through to his core, half-breed vampire Knox Devereaux will always go above and beyond his duty to his clan. But there is resentment that festers within his heart. Born half vampire and half human, Knox has had to work harder than a pure blooded vampire to gain the respect he deserves. To make his plight even worse, his human father is a convicted traitor having given humans the powerful secrets necessary to subdue, fight, and kill vampires. However, there are bittersweet benefits to his tainted DNA. Knox has not felt the horrific effects that the human vaccine has wrought upon his pure blooded brethren. Leading not by popularity but by his sheer physical strength amongst a starving population, Knox's de facto power generates friction within the vamp council. But all the angst he faces pales with the opportunity to find the antidote and and not only save his clan, but grant him the opportunity to claim Felicia.

Beyond just being a man, Knox's vampire culture doesn't understand the whole failing notion of having one's cake and eating it too. He will marry a vampire as his clan, and more importantly, as his race demands. Knox also loves Felicia and he wants her by his side for the entirety of her human life. From his perspective, he doesn't understand why Felicia can't handle the necessary evil of him mating with his vampire wife purely for the sake of re-population. Beyond that, his future wife would mean nothing and would in fact, know and understand the situation that she'll be wife in name only but his heart and his love would belong to Felicia. What prevents Knox from becoming a caveman however is that in all honestly, he wants to provide Felicia with her dream of marriage and a family. The question is, will Knox uphold his resentful duty or give in to the all consuming love he and Felicia share?

My Final Thoughts:

CHOSEN BY BLOOD is a rare find. Its a book that captured my attention from the moment I glimpsed its cover and it was a feeling of possible greatness soon strengthened by the promising summary. And I knew, the moment I dove into the first chapter that all my instincts were about to become proof of one hell of a thrilling romance.

Boasting one of the best opening chapters I've ever read, CHOSEN BY BLOOD opens with one of my favorite plot devices where the hero and heroine have a previous history. Even better is when that history involves love from afar so you can imagine my glee when the first pages immediately unveiled two yearning souls desperate to be together but uncontrollable forces have kept them apart. From the very start, the reader is skillfully enmeshed within the combustible chemistry of Knox Devereaux and Felicia Locke as well as the agony of circumstances that have thus far succeeded in keeping each other just out of reach. No sooner does this happen that you yourself become desperate for more.

In addition to the romance between Knox and Felicia, CHOSEN BY BLOOD hosts an eclectic group of secondary characters that hold the valuable promise of fantastic series installments to come. What do you get when you toss together a werebeast with a chip on his shoulder, a mage with a distinctly feline secret, a human psychic that defies the word beautiful, a wraith (ghost) that can't complete a single sentence without dropping the f-bomb, and a love feuding human and half-breed vampire? One hell of a storm tossed thrill ride! There's never a dull moment to be had when one or all of these unlikely team members are within the same vicinity. Outright hatred and acute distrust erupts almost immediately between some or all members but for better or for worse, this is Para-Ops. I've come to several conclusions regarding the writing strengths of authors. In my opinion, a mark of a good author is when each character can stand alone and be readily identifiable. But a mark of a great author is when one character can utter a single sentence and the reader will know without any additional information who that character is. The latter is Virna DePaul.

CHOSEN BY BLOOD is the very definition of high octane action with plotting that never lets up until the very end. Be prepared to hold tight while the book bucks and twists its way through ultimate fighting showdowns, shocking government cover ups, and a multitude of dirty little secrets. Finally, the Pièce de résistance: the passionate inferno that is the romance between Knox and Felicia. Never once, no matter how intense the scenes or how twisted the plot, the romance and all its conflicting and passionate emotions never takes a backseat but instead seeps heatedly throughout.

A paranormal "A-Team" with the added bonus of lush romance, CHOSEN BY BLOOD is one read this year that you don't want to miss. Enjoy!

Hi guys! Please welcome debut romance author, Karyn Gerrard, to Lovin' Me Some Romance!

About the Author: Living in a small town in a corner of Ontario,Canada, I wile away my spare time writing, reviewing and reading romance. As long as I can avoid being hit by a runaway moose here in this wilderness paradise, I assume everything is golden. Originally from the east coast of Canada, I love to set my stories in the Maritime Provinces~: Happily married for a long time to my own hero, a teacher that braves everything that is thrown at him. His encouragement keeps me moving forward.

Guest Post:

The Appeal of Time Travel

Time Travel as a plot device for either TV, movies or books, seems to ebb and flow in popularity. But the concept itself is fascinating and always appealed to me.

Timeless Heart origins believe it not, came from a dream. I was in my late teens and was watching a BBC period drama series called POLDARK. British actor Robin Ellis, who played Poldark, was in my dreams every night, a teenage crush to be sure. But one night, I dreamt Poldark travelled through time, and I found him. Took him home. Needless to say, the dream was very graphic, real and wicked, considering I was a naive and innocent teen. I always had a vivid imagination. The dream had such an impact on me, it stayed with me all these years.

When I decided to try my hand at an erotica/romance, the dream that never left me prodded my brain. How could two people from different eras cross the chasm of time to find love, happiness? The essence of my story is two people, seemingly lost, adrift for different reasons. Can they reach across 'oceans of time', throw out that lifeline and rescue each other?

My hero is from 1821, Jerrod Ross brings with him all that era encompasses, he is a gentleman, honorable. Passionate. Everything the heroine is looking for in a man. But he doesn't like 2011, he wants to go home. Chasms of time can be great indeed.

In all the time travel movies or books, the big decision comes. Does the person stay in the future or the other person go back to the past with the time traveller? Is love enough to make such a sacrifice? Personally, as much as I loved the guy, could I go back to 1821? No electricity? No flushing toilets?

Tell me, could you do it? If a 6'2 hunk of Regency virile hotness held out his masculine hand and said, 'Come with me', with that deep come-to-bed voice, would you go? Why or why not? And what do you think you would miss the most if you did go back to 1821?

Five years after the Second Civil War ends, human and Otherborn - humanlike creatures with superhuman DNA - stil struggle for peace. To ensure the continued rights of both, the FBI forms a Para-Ops team with a unique set of skills...

Leader of an Otherborn clan, half-breed vampire Knox Devereaux would do anything to find a cure for the anti-vamp vaccine slowly starving his people into extinction. When the FBI contacts him about leading a team of hand-selected Others on a mission to relcaim the stolen antidote, Knox accepts. His new assignment places him in direct contact with Special Agent Felicia Locke, the beauitful human he's craved since their very first meeting.

Felicia's experience as a hostage negotiator makes her a natural asset to a team divided by suspicion and prejudice. While being in close contact with Knox makes the desire she feels for him difficult to deny, Knox must marry a vampire, and she's not about to be his human lover on the side.

As the team embarks on its dangerous mission, Knox is determined to convince Felicia that the passion that connects them is enough to transcend both race and her human idea of morality. But Felicia is intent on teaching Knox that complete trust and love are the only forces strong enough to unite human and Other, once and forever.

Heroes And Beer: Pick Your Poison

First, thank you for having me here today at Lovin’ Me Some Romance!!

My husband and I arrived in Ireland recently (never been before, gorgeous scenery, friendly locals) and, as I was contemplating a topic for this blog post at Finnegan’s Bar, I thought: why not compare my Para-Ops team heroes to beer? After all, people have different opinions on what makes for the best beer (or whether to even drink one), and I’ve created three very different heroes in half vampire/half human Knox Devereaux, human psychic shaman Caleb O’Flare, and werebeast Dex Hunt.

Beer falls into two categories: ale and lager. Ale uses a strain of yeast that ferments from the top of the brewing vessel down towards the bottom. Ales tend toward darker colors and have a depth of flavors that blend together. They present tastes of citrus, flower, honey, spice, chocolate, roasted coffee, etc. The Irish Guinness has been described as a mix between coffee and almost a chocolate flavor. Bitter and full.

Lager uses yeast that sinks to the bottom of the "wort." It has a more uniform flavor (is described as a mix of citrus, flowers, spices, and biscuits (or bread dough). The taste tends to be fairly subtle and the feel is usually sparkling and smooth. The colors can range the spectrum from very pale yellow to dark reddish brown and they usually have a light to medium white head. (O_O)

I like to think each of my heroes (whether a character in my new Para-Ops series or not) is a complex blend of light and dark. Some make a better first impression than others. Some are far different on the inside than they appear on the surface. Some leave you wanting, no craving more, while another might…oh horror of all horrors…leave a reader cold (I prefer conflicted). We all have varied tastes in men and storylines, and while I try my best to craft stories that appeal to the largest number of readers, I know I won’t be able to please everyone, at least not every single time. But yet there’s always the next story, just like there’s always…? You got it, the next beer! If you’re willing, that is.

Knox Devereaux
Beer type: Murphy’s Irish Stout

In Chosen By Blood (Para-Ops Novel 1), my recent release with Berkley Sensation, Knox Devereaux is like a Murphy’s Irish Stout. He’s lighter than the super dark Guinness (his rawness is disguised by a royally elegant exterior and restrained manner), but as the team’s vampire who must lead and save his clan, he’s got plenty of bite.

Knox is a dharmire, a half vampire/half human who is the son of the Vampire Queen and a traitorous human who informed other humans how to kill vampires. He struggles to lead his clan, which is literally starving due to an FBI-engineered vaccine that changes the properties of human blood so it can’t nourish vamps. At the same time, he believes it’s only because of his human blood, the same human blood that his clan despises, that he’s strong enough to lead. He’s constantly trying to prove his loyalty to his people, and this means doing his duty to marry another vampire. Yet, he’s a tad controversial because at the beginning of the novel, he’s married to someone else, but in love and pursuing the heroine. You see, in the world of this series, vampires are NOT monogamous and the males are duty bound to marry and procreate with vampires. Yet even though Knox feels genuine affection for his married-for-convenience wife, Knox loves a human, Special Agent Felicia Locke. Even after he’s widowed, he feels duty-bound to marry another vampire. Because of her strong human morals, she tries her best to stay away from Knox, and he lets her, until that is, they both join the FBI’s first Para-Ops team.

Caleb O’Flare
Beer type: Peroni Nastro Azzurro

In Chosen By Fate (Para-Ops Novel 2), which comes out in October, Caleb O’Flare is the team’s “pretty boy.” Knox describes him this way:

“O’Flare was another one who’d take time to understand. He gave the impression that little bothered him. With shaggy blondish-brown hair and green eyes, he’d be almost pretty but for the strong, angular bone structure he’d inherited from his Native American mother. Plus, he was tall and broad-shouldered, with a long, muscular body that would look equally at home slouching in a chair or rappelling down a mountain. According to his bio, mountain climbing was a favorite hobby of his. The face would be useful for missions requiring the assistance of a swayable female, but Knox would have to trust the body to protect his life. And possibly save it. By all accounts, O’Flare had proven his skill as a medic time and again. Plus, his psychic powers had saved not just his own ass, but those of several soldiers in his previous platoons.”
Just as Knox suspects, Caleb is a mass of seething complexity beneath his handsome surface. He’s funnier and more relaxed (smoother and lighter) than Knox will probably ever be, but this doesn’t make him better…just different. Caleb is a little like a Peroni Nastro Azzurro, an accessible pale lager-style European beer with a light, almost bubbly flavor, more like a soda than a beer. But there’s depth and richness in him, too.

Dex Hunt
Beer type: Amber Bock

And Dex… As I write the proposal for Book 3 in this series, I’m reacquainting myself with Dex, a werebeast cast out by his own people. He pushes people away from the get go, yet at times he can’t help but show us the humor, compassion, and tenderness that is more outwardly prevalent in Caleb than Knox. Dex is an Anheuser-Busch dark lager that 1) has a nutty, roasted aroma; 2) has a “hint of caramel malt sweetness;” and 3) looks great.

Here’s a little peek at Dex.

“You gonna take that job?”

Recalling the call he’d gotten several days ago, Dex smiled, the expression so rare for him that it actually felt foreign. Director Kyle Mahone had practically choked the offer out, causing Dex to laugh long and hard. Unfortunately, he’d been able to think of little else since. Today, when the mage had asked him what was “up,” Dex had flippantly replied he was considering a new job. “Depends,” he said now. The sirens were getting

louder, but he waited for her question.

“Depends on what?”

“Whether they’re afraid of the big, bad wolf.”

“You want them to be afraid?”

He ignored the slight reproof in her gaze. Innocent, he thought again. But she’d get over that really quick, he was sure. “If they’re afraid enough, they won’t even try to keep me on a tight leash. They’ll just leave me the fuck alone and let me do what I do best.”

“What’s that?”

“Survive to live another day.”
Cheers!

Well, I’m a bit loopy from jet lag but I hope this post has entertained and informed you. To me, my heroes rock. They are imperfectly perfect. Each must overcome dark and painful pasts in order to become their best selves and the way that’s going to happen is with the love of one female. They might fight their destinies out of habit, fear, or stubbornness, but ultimately they’ll embrace them and their women. One or more of them might, like beer, be an acquired taste, but in the end, I know someone is going to appreciate them. Hope you’ll give them a try!

Single Title/Series: THE LONE WARRIOR is book four in the Four-Sided Pentacle series. While the book can be read as a stand alone, the reader will most definitely gain more by reading the series in order.

Cover Thoughts: I love this cover. It portrays the hero and the setting of his homeland to perfection.

Origin: I received an Advanced Review Copy Edition from the author in exchange for an honest review.

My Review:

The Plot:

From the moment of her birth, Mehcredi the Assassin has suffered cruelly beneath the vise grip of abuse, neglect, and torture. Abandoned mere moments after arriving into the world, first, with the death of her mother and then with sheer neglect from a would be father who ceases from that very minute to ever acknowledge their relation, Mehcredi is literally left to her own devices. Live or die, no one cares. Surviving not out the generosity of others, instead, Mehcredi is naught but a beggar of scraps, a non-member who is relegated to the lowest of the lows within Lonefell Keep. She is nothing if not a dog and is treated deliberately as such. But deep within Mehcredi lies her only saving grace: her unshakable will to survive and an unmatched bravery that's driven by both child-like ignorance and a heart with the power to bridge even the most shielded of souls.

The last surviving member of the Shar, a desert tribal people, Walker has made it his duty to avenge his family and rid the world of the demon wielding diablomen that murdered his people to extinction. Unlike Mehcredi, Walker grew up within the comforting bonds of familial love and protection but this upbringing has only served to make his loneliness and his utter isolation that much more acute. When Mehcredi, the fledgling assassin, strikes one of his friends, Walker can only feel an all consuming anger as he bears witness once again of a person intent on murdering another for nothing but selfish gain. Seizing Mehcredi, he enslaves her to his side, marking her with his shaman's magic but nothing could prepare him for the pestering and surprising innocence of his assassin.

Eventually abandoning Lonefell Keep, Mehcredi embarks on a troubled life as a failing assassin. Failing in that she can't even terminate her one and only mark with a supposedly infallible chemical agent. Instead, she doses the wrong guy! Now, captured by Walker, she's to serve her penance as a slave. While one should perhaps dislike their captor, Mehcredi feels a tantalizing draw to the solemnly cold warrior that has become the center of her world. He doesn't lie to her. He doesn't call her names or physically abuse her. Instead, he's provides her with a home, a full belly, and chores to keep her occupied. He even teaches her things. All of this culminates with Mehcredi developing curious and never before experienced emotions for the warrior. Walker makes her desire not only his praise and friendship but his touch as well. And even with what appears to be hostility on his part, Mehcredi is nothing if not determined.

When Walker receives word that the last diabloman has vacated the safety of his palace, he doesn't hesitate before planning a trip that's to be his final effort in exacting his revenge. A trip that will bring Walker within heartbreaking distance of his homeland, a world now laid barren after the loss of the Shar. Curiously, Walker is determined to take Mehcredi along. Besides, his mark demands that she stay close until removed. And while there are several reasons for Walker to remove the mark, its not permanent after all, there are also several reasons he can conjure on why he should not. None of which he's willing to look too closely at.

Bound together on a journey rife with danger, Walker and Mehcredi are forced to rely on each other for their very survival. Through sheer innocence and a mile wide stubbornness, Mehcredi slowly seduces her solemn warrior both consciously and unconsciously. And while Walker does his best to resist, he finds himself confiding in Mehcredi things that he's never told another soul and with that trust comes his need to claim. But when a danger unlike any before threatens their lives and those of their friends, Walker and Mehcredi will have to fight for more than just their survival, they'll have to protect the fragile love that's blossomed between them and the hope that they stay alive long enough to witness it grow.

The Heroine:

Neglected since birth, Mehcredi is totally unfamiliar with emotions and actions that socialized individuals take completely for granted. And when a person is repeatedly called stupid, no matter what their level of intelligence may be, they eventually believe the sentiment to be truth. Thus, Mehcredi beats herself harshly over the head for her social ineptness yet remarkably, she remains wonderfully untainted by both her own cruel recriminations and those stated by others. Instead, she retains a child's innocence and wide-eyed wonder that effortlessly bridges her self conviction of stupidity and therefore, Mehcredi can't stop herself from jumping at the chance to learn something new. In fact, Mehcredi's starving for knowledge.

For Mehcredi, Walker is her savior. He's the bringer of her humanity and she soon lives for nothing but his stoic and limited praise. But as Mehcredi becomes more knowledgeable of human emotion and social interactions, her eyes open with dawning understanding. Her warrior is heartbreaking isolated. No one seems to care for Walker. They respect and honor him but because he's coated with a barrier of ice, no one is brave enough to delve any deeper. With this understanding, Mehcredi becomes voracious for more, more of what Walker is thinking and feeling and wanting. She aches with want for her warrior and she'll do everything she can to bridge Walker's desolate soul and bring them the happiness they both deserve.

The Hero:

Blood and violence and death soaks the memories of Walker's family, of his people the Shar. He's the only survivor after the invading Diablomen and their demons desecrated their land and their lives. Now, there's no other soul that can converse in his language or knows his true name. Carrying the burden of a history that will perish with his inevitable death, Walker walks through life utterly isolated., some of which by his own making. His pain is so great and weighs so heavily upon his thoughts and soul that stoicism is all he can offer to those around him. Walker's only determination to live springs solely from his need to avenge his lost people.

Mehcredi is a burst of sunshine that radiates light unwaveringly upon Walker's dark and desolate soul. Her innocence sparks his desire to protect while her tall, lithe and skillful form brings him pride in his teachings. Her openness and beguiling nature coaxes Walker into confiding his dark secrets that no one but his own heart knows gifting him with a measure of relief from their heavy burden. And finally, Mehcredi's direct and sensual nature leaves Walker's determined resistance in shocking crumbles. She unnerves him in every way but she's also become an addiction that he can't quit but one he must. Walker's feeling of inadequacy, of his past arrogance and its impact on the loss of his people makes him feel unworthy of Mehcredi's love. He feels that she deserves better and he'll throw his heart and soul into making sure she acquires the happiness she deserves. And somehow, someway, he'll manage to control the love that consumes him for his beautiful assassin.

My Final Thoughts:

An endless well of emotional complexities, THE LONE WARRIOR is a soulful epic destined to leave you breathless. Fearless in every way, Denise Rossetti tackles two incredibly multifaceted characters, gifting them the time and space to grow believably into themselves and their love.

Dark but strong, Walker draws both Mehcredi and the reader into his painful heartache. He's a lone warrior drawing out all of our feminine protective instincts to the forefront. Jaded horrifically regarding death and violence, Mehcredi adds much needed light to Walker's soul. Her innocence gifts both Walker and the reader with the chance to relive human emotions that we take for granted such as anger, guilt, desire and love. These are not unfamiliar to the reader but to Mehcredi they are and to re-experience the impact of what makes us human is exhilarating. And Rossetti doesn't short change this pairing. She dedicates nearly every word to Walker's and Mehcredi's character development. No question lay unanswered, no dilemma unresolved leaving the reader to close the book with a sigh.

Finally, the enchanting landscape of Rossetti's fantasy world is brought to life with her sweeping and elegant prose. THE LONE WARRIOR is the sweeping arid winds of the desert, the cold blistering blizzards of the mountains, and the sticky sweetness of the tropics. Clashing poetically are the unadvanced masses with the technology hording Technomages. In other words, swashbuckling pirates meet white lab coated scientists and each is as mysterious as the next.

Somewhat of a reunion novel, THE LONE WARRIOR brings past and present characters of the Four-Sided Pentacle series together, reuniting them to fight the persistent evil that continues to spread its oily clutches into the world. One side of this strange pentacle remains unrevealed and it's a guarantee that I'll be there for the final showdown.

What's Up Wednesday! (16)

What's Up Wednesday is a little weekly post that I'm hosting. Just something short and sweet about what's new with me, the romance realm and what ever else strikes my fancy.

So, what's up with me?

Why is the world so obsessed with doomsday theories? In my city, billboards have popped up everywhere announcing that May 21, 2011 will be the Rapture. The Rapture is a Christian belief whereby God takes up into Heaven a select group of people. In other words, Judgement Day. Some Christian talk radio host, Harold Camping, has predicted that this Saturday, May 21st will be the day of the Rapture. Oh and then, of course, five months later on October 21, 2011 the world ends. You can read more about how Camping mathematically came up with 05/21/11 as the Rapture HERE.

Between this and the Maya Calender 2012 doomsday prediction, I've just about had it. Why are people so hell bent on believing and claiming that the world is soon going to end? Is it because the US is in the worst recession in history? Are people so discouraged by their own lives that they want things to end not only for themselves, but for everyone?

Now granted, doomsday theories can be fun and interesting. I'll admit that if Discovery Channel or the History Channel is running shows on doomsday theories, I'm totally drawn in like a moth to a flame. They're fun. But the fun stops there because I've seen it affect people. We have a enough things to be fearful of in life.

To me, biblical doomsday theories are a bunch of hocus pocus. However, natural disasters will happen. Yes, we're raping our Earth and if things don't change within the human race, then nature is bound to retaliate. But beyond that, our Earth is naturally ever changing. We've adapted in our past and we'll adapt again. End of story.

Weekend Movie Review!

"No Strings Attached" featuring Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman. Quirky cute and funny, this was a nice film to while away a few hours. It also helped that the faces and bodies on the screen were gorgeous and not at all hard to look at. Kutcher's and Portman's characters enter into a use-each-other-for-sex-only-and-never-ever-fall-in-love relationship but the viewer, of course, already knows that one will eventually fall for the other. Duh! So yeah, predictable in that aspect but still I'm a sucker for a good romcom and this one delivered. Rating: 3.5/5

"The Green Hornet" featuring Seth Rogan, Cameron Diaz and Jay Chou. The hubs elected to watch this film. I, after hearing about all the scathing reviews for this, wasn't all that interested. Buuuut, I did remember hearing that the little Asian dude was totally worth it so we pressed play. I was totally right too btw, the little Asian dude, Jay Chou who plays Kato, was AWESOME! He's the movie in my opinion. Rogan's character is an unhappy heir to a newspaper empire after his father, whom he's never been on good terms with, dies. Wanting to just do something crazy, he enlists Kato, his father's chauffeur and coffee maker, to help him kick a little ass. Lucky for Rogan's character, who has no fighting skill, his little buddy Kato is a super hero and a genius mechanic and engineer. I've got admit, Rogan's character was a serious jerk for two thirds of the movie while Kato from beginning to end is amazing. Cameron Diaz really didn't have much of a role here as Rogan's secretary. Rating: 2.5/5

"The Next Three Days" featuring Russel Crowe and Elizabeth Banks. Playing husband and wife, the life of Crowe's and Banks's characters is turned upside down when banks is hauled to jail for murder. For three years she's in prison while her appeal for innocence is overruled. Looking at spending the rest of her life in prison, Crowe is desperate to break his wife free. I've got to say, this movie did not play out as I was expecting. I thought that at least three quarters of the film would be dedicated to their escape but in truth, it was only about one quarter with the other three dedicated to Crowe and his planning. Surprisingly good, "The Next Three Days" had both me and my husband on the edge of our seats. Thank goodness we didn't see this one in theaters because we were talking throughout the whole movie! No, don't do that! OMG, she didn't! Hurry! Hurry! Back and forth we went with our demands. There were some plot twists thrown in that seemed way out of left field but otherwise, this was a good movie. The best of the three in fact. Rating: 4/5

Two men.
Two murderers.
Two demands for the promised payment of marriage.

Murder, deceit, and fraud pull Lady Arin Keith between these men.

Which one will bed her, claim her...own her?
Cover Thoughts: In truth, I'm not a fan of the cover.

Origin: Reviewed for Lovin' Me Some Romance. I received a digital copy of this tale from the author in exchange for a honest review.

My Review:

After the tragic death of her sister, Lady Airin's only wish is to see the killer brought to justice. Although she was told the death was a suicide, Airin feels in her heart there is no way her sister would have killed herself. She also knows that the marriage between her sister and brother in-law wasn't going well, either, once her sister found out that she was unable to give him a child.

Airin is convinced that her brother in-law had something to do with the death, but in order to somehow prove his guilt she is going to need time. Her father wishes for her to marry, and in an effort to postpone marriage, Airin concocts what she believes will be a difficult task and it is this: The only man that Airin will marry is the one who finds her grandmother's long lost brooch.

To Airin's surprise, not one, but two men quickly claim that they are the locators of the brooch. This leaves the heroine in a bit of a bind, because not only was she unable to prove her brother in-laws involvement in her sister's death, but her brother in-law happens to be one of the men claiming to have found the brooch!

That's not all, the other man who claims to have found the brooch is known to most as The Scarlet Knight. But to Airin, he is someone else entirely. He is Deryll, the man she fell in love with many years ago. Long before he left for battle and earned his fearsome name.

Her body and heart still yearn for the man she once loved, yet, time has passed, many things have changed and Airin is unsure if he is even the same man she had once loved.

Airin finds herself in a desperate situation. She desires Deryll, but knows if she marries him she may never discover the truth about her sister's death. If she marries her brother in-law, she may very well learn what happened, but she could also end up the next victim.

Final Thoughts:

Murder, mystery and romance intertwine to create "The Pendulum".

The entirety of this tale, although not in the first person, is strictly focused from the heroine's POV. This didn't particularly sit well with me because I found that although I somewhat knew what Airin thought and felt throughout the course of the story, I had no clue what anyone else was truly thinking. Their actions didn't portray their emotions loudly enough for me.

I'll admit, I'm a "what is going on in the hero's mind?" whore. I need to know what he's thinking, what he's feeling, how badly and desperately he needs the heroine. A tale can be written in the first person and still manage to let the reader know what the hero feels--even if only by his actions. However, in this tale, I had absolutely no clue how Deryll truly felt.

The characters, in my opinion, didn't have enough depth to their personalities, either. To the author's credit, you can definitely see that she did try to get Airin's emotions across to the reader, but the attempts lacked the energy and emotion I desperately crave when reading a historical romance.

The only character I felt myself softening too was, ironically, Airin's "evil" brother in-law. There is one scene in the garden when he is talking to Airin about his dead wife, and in that short scene the author managed to portray more emotion than in the entirety of the book.

The plot held promise, but I think due to the lack of emotional connection I felt with the characters the story fell flat.

In closing I would like to say, I'm no editor. I don't get paid to sit here and read stories. I read romance simply because I absolutely love the ride. The up and downs of the emotional roller coaster the characters bring you on can be a powerful thing. Although this story didn't have the intensity of emotion that I desire when reading, there is still something to be said about it.

Three days ago, these characters didn't exist to me. Three days ago, there was no cherished celtic brooch or Scarlet Knight. All of these elements were conjured up simply from the author's mind and I find that fascinating and remarkable. Simply by reading that particular scene in the garden, I know that author has the ability to deliver the sort of emotionally driven romance I like. This particular story wasn't for me, but with each tale penned an author can only get better.

My Rating: 2.5 Stars

Hi Guys! Please join me in welcoming Erotic Romance author, Wynter Daniels, to Lovin' Me Some Romance!

About the Author: (From Carina Press) Wynter Daniels began making up stories as soon as she could speak. She started working on her first novel in college—a mystery. But she soon realized the collegiate life involved way more than books, so she spent the rest of her time in academia partying.

When the writing bug bit her again years later, she tried her hand at many different romance genres, from contemporary to suspense to erotic. She is now published with Ellora's Cave, Red Sage Publishing and Loose Id. Protective Custody is her first release from Carina Press.

Wynter lives in sunny Florida with her real-life hero, their two grown children and two spoiled cats. She sincerely hopes her stories are as much fun for you to read as they were for her to write.

Guest Post:

The Care and Feeding of a Hero

Like most romance authors, I write of heroic men who risk everything for the woman they love, men who would rescue a puppy from a burning building, men who stand tall in the face of any danger. But that same heroic spirit does have a softer side. I should know—I married my very own hero and he stars in many of my romances.

Maybe he is the reason I am partial to military/law enforcement heroes. He probably does a hundred heroic things in a week at his job as a shift commander at our local jail, but he rarely tells me about them. (His attempt at keeping me from worrying – as if!)

Just last week he had a situation where a new elevator in one facility stopped between floors with one officer and several inmates inside – very dangerous. To make matters worse, the malfunctioning mechanism caught fire. My underpaid and under-appreciated husband grabbed one of the crew working on the elevators in another part of the building, had the man force open the doors then my man jumped onto the on-fire top of the elevator with a fire extinguisher strapped to his back.

Heroic? Um, yeah. I think so.

But after the glitter fades, the hero is just a man. He still does heroic things. In my house one of the things that says hero to me is that he never lets me do the dishes after I’ve cooked dinner. He insists on doing them himself. Problem is, the man couldn’t clean a greasy pan if his life depended on it. So what’s a damsel to do? Fix it, of course. When he’s not paying attention, I re-scrub those pans and rearrange the dishwasher. Is he on to me? Maybe. But he never lets on. It’s just one of the ways I take care of him and he takes care of me. I never want him to feel like everything is on his shoulders, strong though they may be.

The same thing holds true in a romance. The hero might rescue the heroine, but somewhere along the line, she needs to reciprocate or just prove she can do it on her own. If she doesn’t, she hasn’t demonstrated her strength and I that’s something I need to see.

I made Megan in Protective Custody a strong woman. She’s educated, successful in her career and she’s not stupid. When she is in a precarious spot, she usually manages to get herself out of it. That’s not saying Will doesn’t take charge and sometimes come to her rescue. He must be heroic, after all.

I don’t believe that behind every strong man is a strong woman. She’s usually right there beside him.

What do you think? Do you enjoy reading about strong women who can rescue themselves or do you prefer the damsel in distress?

Hi Blog Readers! Please welcome Erotic Fantasy Romance author, Denise Rossetti, to Lovin' Me Some Romance!

About the Author: Denise Rossetti pens deliciously romantic tales filled to the brim with lush eroticism and fascinating characters all from the comfort of her home in the Austrialian suburbs. She writes for Berkley and Ellora's Cave.

My Interview:

Denise! Welcome back to Lovin' Me Some Romance! First, congratulations on the long awaited release of THE LONE WARRIOR, the third installment of your Four-Sided Pentacle series. Steeped with otherworldliness, your series is decidedly fantasy. What inspires you to create the lush and arid landscapes of your world? What, if any, modern cultural influences have inspired you and the writing of this magical series?

Hey, thanks for that and for having me at your place!

My brain is like a bower bird’s – it sees something shiny and goes, ‘oooh, gotta have that!’ So my worlds are strange amalgams of everything I see and experience. For example, the desert country of Walker’s people, the Shar, is like the semi-arid rain shadow landscape near Kamloops in British Columbia because I was so deeply impressed with it.

It’s the same with ideas. Walker’s power of ch’qui is an intense connection with the life force of his planet. It has elements of the deep spiritual connection to landscape experienced by indigenous peoples, together with bits of Wicca, feng shui and modern ecological sensitivities. The nea-kata is the martial art practiced by Walker and it’s meant to be reminiscent of aikido and tai chi. Can you say eclectic?

With THE LONE WARRIOR, we're finally exploring the Four-Sided Pentacle element of Earth. Can you explain to blog readers what the Four-Sided Pentacle means to your series and how it involves the elements?

On a handful of worlds, a handful of people are born with unique, but dormant, gifts—the power to control one of the four elements—Fire, Air, Earth or Water. For an even more select group the stress of a near-death experience forces the ability to manifest. Four people in the Pentacle universe have been gifted by the gods with power over one of the four elements as a result.

They are known as the Sides: Cenda (Fire witch in The Flame and the Shadow), who nearly died of a fever; Erik (Air wizard in Thief of Light), who suffered an almost fatal asthma attack as a boy; Walker (Earth shaman in The Lone Warrior), who died after his birth and was revived; and lastly, a Side for Water. I know who that is, but readers don’t, of course. *grin* Each Side is partnered with a lover, and they are an equally unusual group, including a sorcerer of shadows, a null witch and an incompetent assassin.

Only old Purist Deiter, a powerful but irascible wizard has any inkling of the pattern, though he’s deeply puzzled by the absence of a fifth Side for the Pentacle. What he does know, however, is that the Sides are intended to be humanity’s last defence against the ultimate evil, a brilliant necromancer who’s as mad as he’s evil.

Mehcredi the Assassin, the heroine of THE LONE WARRIOR, is a very complex character comprised of child-like innocence, abundant curiosity, and deft intelligence. She's also extremely non-socialized and clumsy around people. What was your experience writing this character? Was she difficult?

I’m so glad all that came across to you! I did a lot of reading and thinking before I wrote Mehcredi. I read about Asperger’s Syndrome and talked with friends who experience it in their daily lives. I watched Tell Me Lies and researched the science of facial expression, which is absolutely fascinating, by the way. Did you know law enforcement agencies like the FBI use it?

I should point out, however, that Mehcredi was abandoned as a baby and grew up bereft of human interaction, let alone affection. She does not have Asperger’s Syndrome. To be honest, I felt I couldn’t do it justice.

My key to Mehcredi’s character was that feeling of separation and isolation, of being other. We’ve all experienced at some time or another, but for her, it’s a constant.

Early on in Mehcredi's character development, how did you maintain the delicate balance between Mehcredi's humanity and her nearly complete lack of both understanding and experiencing human emotion?

I did what every writer does – I put myself inside the character’s head. How would it feel not to know whether a blow was coming or a kiss? Not to understand humour? Because she’s intelligent, she does her best to work from physical clues, but it’s terribly difficult for her.

Mehcredi does grow, though it’s a slow painful process, and two instruments of her increasing empathy are a scruffy little dog and a foulmouthed guttersnipe boy. I enjoyed them both, the rascals!

Walker, the hero of THE LONE WARRIOR, couldn't be any farther on the character spectrum from Mehcredi. A worldly traveler who’s seen and survived the darkness of death, he seeks only to avenge his family. The title of his story says it all for Walker is a lonely warrior, the last of his kind. A dark character to say the least. What about Walker appealed to you as a writer? What was it like for you to walk in his shoes as he lost everything and everyone he loved?

Walker is a master swordsman, so self-contained, so cold and deadly, that everyone holds their breath when he enters the room. He’s a scary guy!

Yet inside, he’s so vulnerable. He is utterly alone, no one to speak his language, no one to share his culture. I tried to imagine how that would feel and how he could hang on to his sanity. I loved that he took refuge in his garden and that the ch’qui nurtured him spiritually as well as physically.

Romance novels are about the journey to the HEA. The further down the pit a character is, the more deeply satisfying the triumph of their love. In The Lone Warrior we have two deeply damaged people who find what they need in each other.

What makes Walker the perfect match for Mehcredi?

I’m shameless about alpha heroes. I love them, but I always want to poke at their vulnerabilities. Walker is so forbidding, so completely armoured, that Mehcredi is probably the only woman who wouldn’t be put off. She has no reserve, no fears, and she boldly walks through his barriers as if they were mist. Of course, she's scared of him, because she's not stupid, but she's not in awe like everyone else. Poor man, he’s baffled! heh heh.

Walker is Mehcredi’s match in every sense. Her innocence and bravery trigger all his protective instincts and she pulls him out of the darkness. Mehcredi is drawn to his strength and patience as a teacher and his beauty as a man, but as her empathy increases, she’s the perfect person to truly understand his loneliness. In Walker, she has everything she needs, but Mehcredi is no fool. She makes sure, so that when she makes her final choice, she does it clear-eyed, as a mature woman

As a warrior, Walker is obviously well versed in combat with a predilection for swords. Why did you pick swords for your hero? What kind of research, if any, did it involve?

Though the Techomages have invented space travel, they guard their secrets jealously and for most of the population, Palimpsest is a medieval sword and sorcery world. There are no firearms.

I think I picked up a fencing sword once at university a million years ago, but apart from that, I’ve never even held one. So, no, not much research!

In fact, purposeful research is not my thing, though I’m trained to do it. I much prefer the bower bird approach. *snicker* (See above.)

I've both read and hosted interviews of romance authors whom have said that writing sex scenes can often be the most challenging scenes to write within the entirety of their novel. The truth of the matter is that they're not just writing about sex for simply the sake of sex but more importantly, they're orchestrating crucial character development within these very pivotal scenes. How do you make sure that every sex scene is meaningful not only within the bonds of the plot, but with regards to the characters themselves?

Sex scenes should never be gratuitous. Don't they say the most important erogenous zone is the one the between the ears? Page after page of docking procedure leaves me cold! If it’s done right, the sexual act can be used as a lens to focus on raw emotion. The reader sees the characters naked and not only physically. All the masks are stripped away and the soul is bared, whether the character knows it or not. In fact, no one in fiction should have meaningless sex – unless it’s pornography. Even if the characters believe it means nothing, that will tell the reader something important about them.

In terms of character development, sex is enormously powerful, but it has to earn its keep and be appropriate, for the hero/heroine and plot advancement.

As to how to do it – well, if the reader can’t empathize with the characters, forget it. A good sex scene (and note, this doesn’t mean the earth has to move the first time!) is overwhelmingly sensual and the way to do that is what writers call ‘deep point of view’. As I write, I keep checking – would so-and-so do this? Or this? Or that? How would they feel about it, emotionally and physically?

And the big question – what is revealed?

By the end, everyone’s exhausted, including me!

And this, by the way, is why Mehcredi and Walker don’t jump into bed in the first chapter.

You don't sugar coat the dark and deadly evil that seeps heavily into your books. I mean, you really go the distance with no detail left overlooked. Who is the Necromancer and how is he important to your series? Do you have to set the stage right to get into his creepy POV? Do you dread him at times?

The Necromancer is evil incarnate. He represents what I consider to be the essential element of evil – complete and utter self-absorption. This doesn’t mean he’s stupid. In fact, he’s a brilliant scholar. Part of his problem is his insatiable thirst for knowledge, because with it comes the desire for complete control. The Necromancer has ambitions!

My awful confession is that I quite enjoy the Necromancer and I don’t find him difficult to write. He’s vivid in my mind. What that says about me I hate to think!

What's next in the Four-Sided Pentacle series?

I’m currently writing The Dark Rose, the fourth and final book in the series, which will be released in the summer of 2012. The title is perfect, because Rose, the celebrated courtesan from The Garden, is the heroine – and she’s not who we think she is. Her hero is a man of science, a Technomage, and the setting is Green IV, a world very like Ireland during the Regency – but delightfully skewed. There are elements of steampunk, science fiction, fantasy and Regency historicals. I’m having so much fun with it!
