Review: LOVE SCRIPT: DELUXE EDITION by Tiffany Ashley

Review: LOVE SCRIPT: DELUXE EDITION by Tiffany Ashley

To get the deal ... He'll need her help

Determined to land a huge advertising account for his company, Nicolas Sinclair gets a LITTLE carried away and tells the potential client he's married and about to celebrate his first anniversary. Now, Nick has a serious problem-he has agreed to a high-stakes cruise with this important client and must find a willing "wife" to join him.

Laney Parks is either in the wrong place at the wrong time, or the right place at the right time-she isn't sure which. She isn't even entirely sure how she got roped into posing as her hunky boss's wife. She finds "sticking to the script" SERIOUSLY unnerving, especially when it involves cuddling up and kissing in public-and sharing the close confines of a cabin, and its single bed, with him.
Publisher: Circle 1 Publishing, February 2011

Format: Trade Paperback

Genre: Erotic Contemporary Romance

Single Title/Series: LOVE SCRIPT: DELUXE EDITION is a single title novel.

Cover Thoughts: I'm in love with this cover. It adequately conveys the plot, setting, and genre in a strikingly beautiful manner.

Origin: I received a copy of the book from the author's publicist in exchange for an honest review.

My Review:

The Plot:

Not many are brave enough to take a romantic Caribbean vacation cruise all alone, not unless you're Laney Parks and you've just caught your two-timing, scumbag of a now ex-boyfriend having sex with another woman. But it's better to forge ahead and wallow in your sad self pity while simultaneously getting a tan, right? Well it's a good plan right up until Laney runs into her boss and an offer she can't refuse: pose as his wife and receive not only the promotion of a lifetime, but an additional ten thousand dollars to sweeten the deal. All Laney has to do is stick to the script. Piece of cake!

Nick Sinclair is on the verge of making a complete ass of himself in front of a potential client he's currently courting and lying to in order to secure the marketing deal of a lifetime for his firm. Not only did he lie about his marriage status and hijack his potential client's Caribbean vacation, but now he's facing a real disaster while standing alone at the cruise ship entrance minus his "wife" after an inconvenient ultimatum. Nick needs to find a replacement and fast. How fortuitous then that Laney Parks is standing behind him minus her boyfriend. Throwing everything at the woman except for the kitchen sink, Nick seals his vow of "marriage" from Laney but maintaining their business arrangement proves to be the greatest, most agonizing effort in restraint.

Well aware of Nick's reputation as a womanizer, Laney is on guard for any seduction shenanigans. Meanwhile, she's also having second thoughts about her agreement to help Nick and pose as his "wife". He wants every impression of a couple in love but after her recent heartbreak, the last thing Laney wants to do is snuggle and make googly-eyes with a man she doesn't know during her mourning period. To add heat to her already raging emotions, Laney is no where near as immune to Nick's model good looks as she'd like. Plus, he embodies a surprising intensity that threatens to overwhelm every one of her vulnerable senses. Determined to set boundaries between her and her luscious "husband", Laney does her part to act the doting wife in public but alone with Nick, she's encased within a fortress of pure ice. Now all she has to do is remain vigilant and prevent Nick from thawing her rigid defenses before week's end and she can go home with her arms laden with cash and a premiere career future.

Sailing upon a sea of uncharted emotions, Nick has never been more confused or more sexually frustrated by a woman in his entire adult life. Laney is everything he's never wanted in a woman but soon she becomes everything that he'll do anything to possess. A complete departure from the clean, no-strings-no-mess women of his past, Laney's middle name is complicated. And while her lush coco skin and sinful curves have him and every other hot-blooded male on the ship salivating, Nick can't help but respect Laney's modesty and sense of self respect. Truth is, she's a damned inconvenience, one that he doesn't want nor need in his life but to Nick's untimely alarm, Laney becomes the one woman in the world that he can't possibly live without.

The Heroine:

Laney Parks embodies a special combination of a warm consideration for others, an unintentional beauty, and an admirably high sense of self worth. In essence, Laney is pure class. Kind, loyal, and caring, she's the type of heroine that's more than deserving of her Happily Ever After and as a reader, you want to journey with Laney and be apart of that special moment when she finally receives her long awaited true love and happiness.

Bringing much needed realism to the book, it's not long before Laney regrets her agreement with Nick, not only because it feels cheap and lousy, but because she's lying to others whom at any other time could have been her friends. Laney's doing a bad, bad thing on this cruise and while the naughtiness is slightly liberating, Laney knows what the end result will be and she doesn't sugar coat or ignore the reality of her situation. It's this knowledge of herself and of Nick that has her embracing the possibility that a real relationship between the two of them may never become reality. But despite the fact that she's walked this journey with her eyes wide open, Laney is still helpless to her heart's desire and falls headlong into love with Nick.

The Hero:

Ruthless, predatory, competitive, and vigilant, Nick Sinclair is the very definition of intensity. A self proclaimed bachelor that only wants the simple ease that causal sex can offer, Nick doesn't want a relationship but he proves on the cruise with Laney that he can be a rather devoted and insatiable husband. Pure sexual dynamite in bed, Nick has never known this possessive and dominating side of himself that he inadvertently unleashes upon Laney. Her unintentional seductive ways leaves him aching with a want so fierce that he's left with no choice but to ruthlessly pursue her and bring them both to a whole new level within their "marriage". No one is more surprised than Nick when he realizes that he's falling in love with Laney. Truth of the matter is that Laney challenges him to be a better man. She doesn't roll over for him or issue ultimatums that would grant him the easy out. She makes him work for it and for once, Nick is willing and wanting to be in love.

My Final Thoughts:

LOVE SCRIPT: DELUXE EDITION was a surprising but delightful read. I must admit that it's hard not to judge a contemporary romance without a more skeptical eye. The premise of this novel is undoubtedly far fetched but I was extremely delighted to find that the characters, especially Laney, brought a welcome and much needed realism to the plot. It therefore became incredibly easy to suspend my disbelief and simply immerse myself into what really became an extremely entertaining read.

And it must be added that the sex in this novel is off-the-charts explosive. Trust me when I say that you'll be curling your toes, fanning your cheeks, and squirming in your seat as Nick and Laney start getting hot and heavy in and out of the bedroom. Nick is incredibly intense so it's no surprise when he becomes almost wild with a primitive need to possess Laney but it's his alarm and bewilderment over his own behavior that keeps Nick from becoming too aggressive. He pushes, yes, but his pursuit is oh so delicious. Meanwhile Laney, while not as sexually aggressive as Nick, is a wonderful counterpoint to his predatory nature with her practicality and endearing vulnerabilities. She's a complex mixture of seductress and innocent that has Nick twisted with the simultaneous need to both claim and comfort her.

And finally, from the cover it's obvious that LOVE SCRIPT: DELUXE EDITION is an interracial romance but truly, these differences didn't have any profound effect whatsoever on the plot nor the characters. Attraction is attraction and these two scorched the pages with an insatiable inferno that'll leave you breathless. If you're interested in a mixed race romance but are hesitant, this novel is a great place to start.

4 Stars

ROCK HARD by Olivia Cunning

Two years ago, Sed gave Jessica an ultimatum and she broke his heart by leaving without a backwards glance. Since then, he’s tried to forget her by screwing any woman who will have him. But deep down, Sed still loves Jessica. Seeing her working in a strip club, with all those men gawking at her, sends Sed into a jealous rage. Jessica belongs to him…

Heartbroken, Jessica made her choice and ended their engagement. Jessica still hates Sed and knows one mere woman will never satisfy his over-inflated ego or insatiable sexual appetite. So when Sed shows up at the strip club where she’s working for the summer, and yanks her off the stage, she’s furious. She doesn’t need Sed. Never did, never will.

But she does want him. And who wouldn’t? The man is delicious—sexy, virile, and amazing in bed.

Thanks to Sed’s posturing, Jessica finds herself jobless, homeless, and desperate. She has no choice but to take a summer job that has her trapped on Sinners’ tour bus with the impossibly sexy jerk for two entire months. And, curse it all, the passion between them is hotter than ever!

What's Up Wednesday! (13)

What's Up Wednesday is a little weekly post that I'm hosting. Just something short and sweet about what's new with me, the romance realm and what ever else strikes my fancy.

So, what's up with me?

God knows that in this crappy economy, I should be thankful that I even have a job and I am, truly, but after having six business days off I'm alarmed by the amount of time I'm required to devote to my job. It's crazy to think that I likely spend more hours working that I do with my husband or my family. It's disgusting really.

My vacation was really rather wonderful. While I didn't get as much reading done as I would have liked, I did devote oodles of time to the yard and to my dining/living room decorating project. But my favorite moments were the evenings and the relaxing atmosphere I experienced with my husband. Mr. VFG and I work for the same company. His job is a million times more complex than mine and he has a terrible time leaving work where it belongs after closing time. Instead he gets home and analyses his day, plays with formulas and just broods in general. So, it was bliss when for several days I got him all to myself at night. No thinking or brooding on work. Heaven.

Sigh....and now it's back to the grind. Back to routine where I'll be living for the weekend. But summer is right around the corner and I'm looking forward to the heat. Bring it on!!

Weekend Movie Review!

Okay, so the hubs and I watched a TON of movies over our vacation. Some were oldies and others were brand new. I'm not going to talk about them all because that's just crazy. I'm narrowing it down to two.

"The King's Speech" with Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, and Geoffrey Rush. Shining a light on the little known story of the friendship between King George VI and his speech therapist, this movie was amazing from beginning to end. I now understand why it took home the Oscar for both Best Actor and Best Motion Picture. Oh and the cinematography! The beautiful history that was brought to life with this film! This is going to sound weird but the textures in this film felt so real that I was thoroughly convinced I could reach out and touch everything beyond the screen. And the stammer! Colin Firth was amazing! This is a must see for everyone.

"Country Strong" featuring Gwyneth Paltrow, Tim McGraw, Garrett Hedlund, and Leighton Meester. This was a surprising favorite of mine....not so much for Mr. VFG. This is definitely a chick's film. Oh, and I'm crushing HARD on Garrett Hedlund. I've always had a soft spot for cowboys and this man takes the cake! If only I could get Mr. VFG into a pair wranglers, cowboy boots, and a smokin' hot cowboy hat. Sigh....the possibilities. But I digress. There's two love stories going on here, one between Gwyneth and Tim McGraw and one between Garrett Hedlund and Leighton Meester. The latter was my favorite. And everyone who sings, is really singing! Again, Garrett takes the cake. He's so sexy!! Okay, I don't think I can say much else about this film without waxing poetic about Garrett Hedlund. In all, this is a rather dark film and I do have my issues with it, but Garrett and Leighton save the day. I'll be watching this one again.

Hi everyone! Please join me in welcoming Erotic Contemporary Romance author, Olivia Cunning, to Lovin' Me Some Romance!

About the Author: From Sourcebooks - Raised on hard rock music from the cradle, Olivia Cunning attended her first Styx concert at age six and fell instantly in love with live music. She discovered her second love, romantic fiction, as a teen--first, voraciously reading steamy romance novels and then penning her own. She currently lives in Nebraska and is working on Book 3 in the Sinners on Tour Series, set for release in Fall 2011. For more information, please visit http://www.oliviacunning.com/ and http://www.sinnersontour.com/.

My Interview:

Let's Talk About Sex  ....baby, let's talk about you and me. Let's talk about all the good things an - ehem, sorry.

Olivia! Thank you so much for joining me today at Lovin' Me Some Romance! So, are you ready to talk sex because I'm gonna pick your brain relentlessly on the topic. *wink*

First, let's talk about the rock band Sinners and its luscious five band mates that literally put the rock in rock star. Each embodies a unique and explosive sexuality that defines them in one way or another. Having a band of guys of this nature gives you the freedom to examine their sexualities from all imaginable angles and comparisons. Brian is the big-hearted lover, Sed is insatiable, Jace is into bondage, Eric's the voyeur, and Trey is bisexual. Lump all this together and we've got a party people!! What came first, the sexual preferences you wanted to explore or Sinners' bandmates? Were there any forms of sexuality you wanted to explore but didn't or won't? Are there any forms of sexuality in the book that pushes your boundaries as an author? In other words, do you find Trey's bisexuality more of challenge to write than Eric's voyeurism, or vice versa, or is it all simply creative juice for your written word?

The bandmates definitely came first. (*sounds pervy*) When I start writing a story, it takes me a while to get to know my characters. So I just keep writing until they click for me. A lot of the sexual characteristics (and personality traits) came into existence in various scenes. For example in Backstage Pass, Eric barged into the bathroom on Myrna and Brian. I did not know he was a voyeur until that moment. Didn’t realize Jace was into BDSM until he “helped” Brian by offering that suitcase of his and some pointers. So once I know all these things, I go back later and layer in hints or clues. I did not do character sketches at the beginning and assign sexualities to my characters. Trey: Bisexual. No, Trey is Trey. He happens to be bisexual. It’s part of who he is. Their sexuality is just one of many of their traits. As for writing the various types of sex scenes, I think threesomes are the most difficult. So many body parts to keep track of!

What gets you in the mood? I mean, what gets you in the mood to write sex? Set the stage for us!

My kid not being in the room, for one thing. Nothing brings my creative, em, juices to a sudden halt faster than that. I usually just listen to loud metal music (it blocks distractions) and go for it. I don’t need scented candles and champagne or anything. The ideas for most of my sex scenes originate in those first few minutes when I wake up on a Saturday or Sunday (no alarm clock!) and lay in bed drifting in and out of consciousness. Actually, most of my ideas (sex scenes or otherwise) occur to me then. That’s why I’m mostly a weekend writer.

While the heroines of the Sinners on Tour series obviously play crucial roles, I've felt from reading your novels that it's the heroes and their complex male camaraderie that are the real fabric and glue that binds this series together. Male relationships are drastically different from females and you've managed to create believable friendships and showcased wonderful male behavior in all its forms. Was this ability to write men so effortlessly as easy as it appears on the page? What influences or inspirations have you experienced that helped you develop this seemingly living, breathing relationship betwixt these five very different men?

I love men. The way they are, not the way they are idealized in many romance novels. Sure Sinners can get romantic, but if they do so in front of their friends, you better believe they are going to get ripped on for it. I find real men most fascinating when they’re in a group and no women are around (except me watching them incognito). No, I’m not a stalker. I’m doing “research”. Some of my best friends are men. I guess understanding how men interact by paying attention (instead of chastising them for being men) translates into great fictional relationships.

What is your favorite sex scene from BACKSTAGE PASS and why?

The first one, where Brian finds his muse and writes his musical composition over Myrna’s naked body. It would be amazing to inspire a man to write a song.

I've both read and hosted interviews of romance authors whom have said that writing sex scenes can often be the most challenging scenes to write within the entirety of their novel. The truth of the matter is that they're not just writing about sex for simply the sake of sex but more importantly, they're orchestrating crucial character development within these very pivotal scenes. As an Erotic Romance author, you're obviously expected to have loads of hot, toe-curling sex in your books. *I bow down to you, by the way. You're sex scenes are seriously HAWT!* How do you make sure that every sex scene is meaningful not only within the bonds of the plot, but with regards to the characters themselves?

I do? I’ll have to take your word on it. I’m just writing a story. I’m not the type of writer who analyzes purposefully. I write it. If it seems to fit, it stays. If it doesn’t, it gets cut. If I analyzed my writing that closely, I’d never finish anything. You will not find a spreadsheet anywhere near my writing space. My creative mind is much too chaotic to allow that kind of constraint.

What is your favorite sex scene from ROCK HARD? Why?

Has to be the public encounter at the Bellagio fountain. Sed sings Celine Dion to Jessica. A metal singer who sings that kind of mushy song to serenade his lady gets two thumbs up from me. If you haven’t figured it out, yet, the whole music/sex combination really does it for me.

I personally lost count of the numerous sex scenes as well as the abundant variety of sexual activities your characters engage in. How in the world do you come up with all these scenes and how do you keep them interesting? How do you make sure that you don't accidentally recreate similar sex scenes? Is there a sex scene quota for erotica novels?

I. Don’t. Know. When I write, I see a movie in my subconscious (sometimes it’s a porn movie, lol!). I just go with it. Sometimes I sit and think (especially at the beginning of a scene), but most of the time, I just write. After writing Backstage Pass, where Brian and Myrna engage in almost every imaginable form of sexual activity, it does become a challenge to devise something entirely new. A quota? No. I don’t even know how many scenes are in the books. I do know I was asked to write more sex scenes into Sed and Jessica’s book. So I guess someone is counting. Again, I’m just writing a story. No spreadsheets. Maybe a few satin sheets.

What is your favorite sexual position to orchestrate into your sex scenes? Why?

They’re all hot, but for different reasons. If they’re hot, I like them. The most romantic positions are face to face so they can look into each other’s eyes, but sometimes sex doesn’t need to be romantic. I guess it depends on the mood I’m trying to evoke in the scene. Is it “lovey-lovey mush” time? Or “you’re a bastard, don’t look at me, just screw my brains out now” time?

Naughty sex words. Okay, I'll admit to having some personal issues with certain descriptive sex words. Mostly regarding slang for female genitalia. However, sitting down to an erotic novel, I'm expecting the language and therefore have less of problem facing it knowing that it’s all part of the ride. What are your thoughts on sex slang? Are you totally alright writing genitalia sex words? Or is it simply a necessary requirement for the genre that you have to grin and bear?

I assume you’re talking about the c-word in regards to female parts? I have deleted that word from more than one scene. Usually it’s one of the guys dirty-talking to his woman and saying things such as “is your c-word wet for me? Is it hot?”, but I know it bothers a lot of people, so I edit it out. No words bother me. They’re just words. So I’m more likely to censor myself a little (hard to believe, I know) with more sensitive readers in mind. Not for myself. Strangely, I’ve seen many a reader criticize an erotic romance writer for calling the parts by their technical terms. Apparently, vagina and penis aren’t sexy enough, so I think for women parts you’re stuck with the p-word as most find it less offensive than the c-word. Personally, I think the c-word is kind of sexy in dirty talk, but I will refrain. Unless my readers can handle it. What do you think about the c-word, readers?

Finally, what's next for Olivia Cunning?

I’m finishing up the Sinners on Tour series. There are still three unloved Sinners out there. We can’t have that! Those sexy rockers need lovin’. After all the Sinners are happily-ever-aftered, I plan to create another band of hot rockers for you all to fall in love with.

What's Up Wednesday! (12)

What's Up Wednesday is a little weekly post that I'm hosting. Just something short and sweet about what's new with me, the romance realm and what ever else strikes my fancy.

So, what's up with me?

Whew! This post is going up late. Its also going to be abnormally short.

I'm on vacation this week. Actually, its a stay-cation cause the hubs and I are staying home as opposed to going somewhere. Now, one would think that I'd get more reading and blogging done while on vacation but this couldn't be farther from the truth of reality. Instead, it's been nothing but go, go, go as Mr. VFG and I have tackled one project after another. Seriously, I think we've dropped over a grand at Home Depot this week on flowers and landscaping supplies to paint and lamp kits for projects in doors.

Sadly, at this moment I'm not only rockin' an infuriating allergy attack, but after spending the last four hours sanding my 'cupcake' chairs in prep for painting, I've literally sanded down my finger tips which are now aching. Note to self for tomorrow's sanding: wear gloves!

So, my face is red and puffy, my nose is sheer torture, and my finger tips are loudly complaining. With that note, I'm signing off.

I hope everyone is having a good week. Hopefully, the ol' body will be cooperating tomorrow and I'll try and make some blog rounds.

Hugs,
VFG

Guest Post:

Hi LMSR blog readers! Please join me in welcoming Paranormal Romance author, Marie Treanor, to Lovin' Me Some Romance!

About the Author: Marie Treanor lives in Scotland with her eccentric husband and three much-too-smart children. Having grown bored with city life, she resides these days in a picturesque village by the sea where she is lucky enough to enjoy herself avoiding housework and writing sensual stories of paranormal romance and fantasy.

A Doomed Love by Marie Treanor

On the face of it, my heroine’s love is doomed.

In Blood on Silk, she accidentally awakened the Ancient vampire Saloman from his three hundred year “sleep” and set in motion a chain of events that will change the world forever. Saloman is hell-bent not just on vengeance but on world domination, and to achieve these things he really needs his full strength back – which involves killing Elizabeth, his Awakener.

Elizabeth. for her part, is not in favour of vampires biting human – at least not without permission – let alone of vampires ruling humans. And being responsible for releasing Saloman on the world once more, she has to at least try to kill him.

My REVIEW
Not an easy recipe for romance, and yet Elizabeth fell in love with Saloman, and by the end of Blood on Silk they had failed to kill each other. Now, in Blood Sin, the sequel, they meet again, and working together to retrieve Saloman’s powerful lost sword, they begin to understand each other better. But does this make a happy ending any more possible for them?

Aside from their opposing views of human independence and their need to kill each other, can a vampire truly love a human? And if Saloman is capable of love – which he admitted to in Blood on Silk – is he capable of loving Elizabeth with the intensity she feels for him? He’s over three thousand years old; Elizabeth’s lifespan is a drop in the ocean of his existence.

In Blood Sin, Elizabeth is still opposing Saloman’s plans, and still hiding her love from her friends the vampire hunters. Sooner or later, she’s going to have to betray one side or the other, and Saloman is not a creature who tolerates betrayal.

So is their romance doomed from the outset? Or is there a way for them to be together? Obviously, you’ll need to read the Awakened by Blood series (Blood on Silk, Blood Sin and Blood Eternal (Oct 2011) to find out!

Question: But I would like to know, in a more general kind of a way, if you think it’s possible for a vampire and a human to live happily ever after? Would their love be doomed?

I have a copy of Blood Sin – or Blood on Silk if the winner prefers! – to give away to someone who answers that question, or comments on my post in some other way.

My REVIEW!

What's Up Wednesday! (11)

WARNING: Adult Language Ahead!!

What's Up Wednesday is a little weekly post that I'm hosting. Just something short and sweet about what's new with me, the romance realm and what ever else strikes my fancy.

So, what's up with me? What's on my mind?

Alright call me weird, a prude, or what have you but I've got to beg the question: are there any pleasing words out there as reference for a woman's vagina?

I love romance books, err...obviously, but I can't always wrap my head around the words - brace yourselves - pussy or cunt. Even typing them at this moment is making me cringe slightly. They just sound so ridiculous and demeaning sometimes. Occasionally, I'll be reading along enjoying a highly pleasurable sex scene when wham! Pussy and cunt make their grand entrance upon the page. My immediate thought when running across one of these words is damn, I hate that word, and then I can't help the scrunched expression that appears on my face nor the total pause in my reading enjoyment. Sometimes, the context of the words sound so degrading and so awful that I'll skip the scene all together. This doesn't happen all the time or all that often really. Most of the time I manage to let the words roll off my shoulders with nary a second thought especially when an author has woven a particularly expert and explosive sexual scene and/or tension, then the words seem to work, but other times...

But are there really any other viable replacements? I've asked this of myself many times and I've got no answers. Funnily enough, I love all the wonderful descriptive words for a man. They all roll off the tongue quite marvelously but pussy? Cunt? Nope, they just don't feel right in my mind, voiced or otherwise.

Does anyone else share my sentiments? Or is this just a VFG issue where I should have kept my big trap shut?

Weekend Movie Review!

Amazingly enough, I managed to read more this weekend than anything else. But the hubs and I did squeeze in a movie. ;)

"The Hangover" This was a re-watch. I swear, no matter how many times I see the movie, its still funny but something new has evolved from the screen for me and that's Bradley Cooper. I'm seriously, majorly crushing on this guy. He's freakin' hot sex on a stick and I'm dying to lick him all up and down. No joke. I've seen this movie a lot and truly, I could care less about the jokes, I just want and got more Bradley face time. ;) Here's to "The Hangover Part II"!!!

What's new in romance?

Nalini Singh will be kicking off her US book tour soon for the release of KISS OF SNOW. Click HERE to see if she's coming your way. Sadly, she'll be no where near me.

My REVIEW!

**********************************************************

Hi everyone! Please join me in welcoming Paranormal Romance author, Tessa Adams, to Lovin' Me Some Romance!

About the Author: Teacher, writer, wife, and mother, Tessa Adams also writes as Tracy Wolff. To learn more, check out Tessa's Bio HERE!

My Interview:

I love that you write about dragons. Don't get me wrong, I love me some vampires and werewolves too, but there's just something fun and magical about dragons. What dragon inspirations did you experience that set your writer imagination on fire? What is it about dragons that make them so idyllic as paranormal romance heroes and heroines?

I’ve loved dragons since I was little. You’re right—there really is just something about them that immediately engages the imagination. Maybe it’s because they’re usually such solitary creatures and I love being able to play with that, bend it, as I help them find their mates. As a whole, there is so much about dragons that gets to me. They’re fierce, strong, loyal, cunning—and of course, they also breathe fire. What’s not to love about that? And they love jewels and I am all about the bling.

I think dragons make idyllic heroes and heroines because of that whole solitary strength thing. There’s something incredibly compelling, in my opinion, in creating a character who believes his/her strength comes from being alone and then turning that belief on its head as he/she falls for someone who makes them reconsider that belief.

The Dragonstar Clan, the focal point of your Dragon's Heat series, are fighting against enemies on multiple battle fronts, the most threatening being biological warfare. A deadly and horrific virus is killing off Dragonstars at an alarming rate with seemingly no cure in sight. You do a lovely job of conveying enough information of this virus to provide reader understanding while also preventing the complexities from bogging down the reading experience. How much research was involved in creating this virus for your dragons? What prompted you to create this type of battle for the Drangonstars?

Thank you for that—you’ve made my day, because really, trying to balance the science with the story was probably the most difficult part of writing the first two books in this series. I did a lot of research on viruses—I mean A LOT – and now know more than I ever wanted to about some of the worst viruses in the world. As I wrote the different lab scenes in Hidden Embers, I tried to give as much information as I would want on the subject if I was a reader. Enough to understand what is going on, but not so much that it interferes with the emotions and experiences of my characters.

I chose a virus because, unfortunately, I really believe viral warfare is a part of our future—biological and computer. And because I think it’s so much more frightening, isn’t it? Fighting someone in hand to hand combat is one thing, but having your enemy turn your own body against you? That’s terrifying.

Quinn Maguire, the hero of HIDDEN EMBERS - Dragon's Heat Book Two, is gifted with incredible healing powers that unfortunately have little to no effect on the virus. He's a man who's met failure too many times to count and he's lost more than most could ever hope to survive. What was the experience of writing his character? How challenging was it to enmesh yourself into the psyche of man who is pondering suicide? Did you ever feel guilty for taking so much away from him? His family? His inability to save his people?

I know, I know. I always say Quinn’s my favorite character, which is awful when you think of how much I put the poor man through. Can you imagine what I’d do to him if I didn’t love him so much? Writing his character was engrossing for me—I totally immersed myself in him and his feelings as I wrote the book, which was not a pleasant place to be sometimes. You mentioned below a scene that brought you to tears, but Quinn had me in tears more than once as I wrote his story. Do I feel guilty about what I took from him? Not really—maybe because I think I gave him someone pretty amazing in Jasmine and because there’s a lot more to come for Quinn in future books …

As with most shifter romances, your Dragon's Heat heroes and heroines mate for life and the mating is an intense and final thing. What makes the mating of your dragons unique amongst other paranormal romances? Why did you feel it was necessary to incorporate such significance to the mating act in your series? What, to you, is the most romantic aspect of the mating between your dragons?

To be honest, I never considered not having my dragons mate for life. I mean, as you mention below, I really give them a hard time. I torture them, kill off people that they love, really tear them apart. Giving them the gift of a forever kind of mate is my apology to them, I think. My way of making up for everything terrible that I do to them in the course of the novel. As for the significance of the mating act— I think finding someone you’re that connected to is an amazing gift and since sex is so often the only way my dragons allow themselves to connect for a while, I love using that connection to bring them to the realization that they really don’t have to be alone. As for the most romantic aspect of mating—the fact that the connection between my hero and heroine manifests itself in a physical way, so that it can’t be denied.

Jasmine Kane, Quinn's heroine, is quite the ball buster. She's stubborn, a risk taker, and positively fearless - basically the exact opposite of what Quinn had in mind for himself. What was your experience writing Jasmine? Why did you feel she'd make the perfect match for Quinn? Does Jasmine embody any aspects that are similar to your own personality makeup? Did you ever feel nervous about her character for I'll admit to being a bit standoff-ish myself with her at times?

Oh, absolutely, Jasmine made me nervous! I love to write really strong heroines, but she’s something else, isn’t she? Quinn absolutely wanted a sweet, old-time kind of heroine, one that would give him surcease from all the horrors of his own life, but that kind of heroine was exactly what he didn’t need. As you mentioned above, when we meet him he is suicidal and dangerous and more wounded than he wants to admit. A soft, sweet heroine would have tried to respect his space and his No Trespassing signs, and he would have rolled right over her. Plus, he’d never find a way out of his despair. Jasmine ripped right past the blame and recriminations he heaped on himself and in doing so, saved him. Without her, I don’t think Quinn would have survived.

The Dragon's Heat Series is soaked in the death of numerous Dragonstars as they fall helplessly against the virus that continues to wreak havoc on their clan. In HIDDEN EMBERS, there's a particularly heart breaking scene where the virus attacks a family that left me in tears. You give such life to each of your characters and then you take it away so gruesomely. How do you do it? Why do you do it?

Wow, you don’t ask the easy questions, do you? I have a tendency to do this more in my paranormals than in anything else that I write and I think it’s because the stakes are so high in the paranormal genre. I mean, the battle between good and evil, of any type, is never a pleasant one and so often the people who end up paying the highest price are the most innocent and the most good. I think if I leave that out of my novels that something will really be missing. I mean, where’s the joy, the triumph in winning, if the stakes aren’t high and there’s no chance that you can lose? And if you think Hidden Embers is bad, wait until Forbidden Embers. I kill off a character in that story that makes even me sob. And just so you don’t think I have it out for the Dragonstars, know that I also do this in my YA paranormals. I kill off a character in the middle of Tempest Rising that had my editor and my friends traumatized for days …

Let's talk about sex. You incorporate a wonderful balance of romance, plot and sex in your Dragon's Heat series. Especially in the case of HIDDEN EMBERS. There's so much tragedy but your timing couldn't be more perfect when both the reader and the characters are ready and are in need of romance and connection. Do you purposefully choreographic your novels to give those types of highs and lows? What is your writing process when creating these highly emotional love scenes? Is it challenging to maintain such a balance of plot and erotica?

First of all, thank you so much! I am thrilled that you think I create a strong balance. It is a little like walking a tightrope, trying to keep romance, action, sex, and all the paranormal elements working together. I absolutely do choreograph my novels so that even in the middle of deeply emotional and painful scenes my readers know that something is coming to relieve the tension. As for the erotica aspect of my series, I really try to use the sexual encounters to not just grow the intimacy of the relationship between my hero and heroine, but also to heal them in a way nothing else can. Especially in the case of Quinn and Jasmine who are both so wary of depending on anyone—for a while, the only way they can connect is through the pleasure they bring each other. But even then, I try to up the stakes. Which, of course, is why Jasmine runs, right? She is a ballbuster, but also a coward, I think, when it comes to facing what she feels—at least in the first half of the novel.

Your dragons can wield great magic but you always seemingly incorporate repercussions for each ability. Even the dragon's ability shift comes along with its own searing agony. And Quinn, he feels the effects of his healing powers with crippling pain and exhaustion. It seems as though each dragon's gift comes at a price. Was this purposefully done or did this give and take of magic flow naturally from your imagination? Do you believe that such magical abilities should come with a price?

I absolutely believe that magic should come with a price. I think it’s the literature professor in me and all the years I spent studying novels and short story where the themes dealt with how easily power corrupts. I love that my dragons are strong and powerful and wield incredible magic, but at the same time I don’t believe that magic should be too easy for them. Otherwise, what’s to keep them from abusing their gifts and using them to hurt those who are less powerful than they are. This is a trap the Wyvernmoons fall into, much to their eventual detriment (not to give away any spoilers or anything ;)

New Mexico, the Dragonstars' territory is a living, breathing character all its own. It's obvious that you love this desert landscape for its infused into each of your dragons. What's so special about the desert through your eyes? What made this landscape so perfect for your dragons as it seems to be the exact opposite from the mountainous, foggy, overgrown landscapes that are mostly depicted as dragon territory?

I love New Mexico—it’s such a beautiful place and, I think, really underrated and underrepresented in most romance fiction. For years, throughout college and grad school, I made the long trek across the southwest to visit my parents in California, and my favorite part of the drive was the barren and beautiful desert of New Mexico. More than once, my friends and I stopped to explore the caves that populate so much of the state and the experiences blew my mind-—if you’ve never seen them, then I highly recommend a tour of them, even if it is only virtual. So when I was looking for a place to set my dragons, I remembered the power and beauty of those caves, and knew that I wasn’t going to be happy settling the Dragonstars anywhere else.

And finally, what's next for Tessa Adams and the Dragonstars?

Oh, I’m so glad you asked! In September 2011, NAL is putting out an especial short story called Eternal Embers. Then comes Forbidden Embers in October. This is Logan’s story and to date, my editor’s favorite. He falls, hard, for the Wyvernmoon queen …

After that, is Dash’s story (he’s a Wyvernmoon sentry), followed by Shawn’s story and then, I think—because of popular demand and my very anxious editor—Gabe’s story.

Thanks so much for having me today :) I really appreciate it!

Publisher: NAL Trade, April 2011

Genre: Erotic Paranormal Romance

Single Title/Series: HIDDEN EMBERS is Book Two in the Dragon's Heat series and can be read as a stand alone novel.

Cover Thoughts: I really like this cover. It feels like the hero Quinn and the cover model shares a striking resemblance to my mind's picture of the dragon shifter. And as with DARK EMBERS, I'm lovin' that attention was paid once again to the beautiful desert landscape.

Origin: I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

My Review:

The Plot:

Quinn Maguire, dragon shifter and healer of the Dragonstar clan, is almost to the point of no return. He's lost everything and nearly everyone he's ever loved and is facing the very real possibility that one day soon, his entire clan will be striked completely from Earth. It will all have been his fault too. It will all have been his failure for Quinn's a healer who's aged powers are useless against the disease that's ravaging his people like a raging wild fire eats through dried and brittle grass. No matter how hard he attacks the disease, no matter how fast he tries to unravel its secrets, the disease always wins in its ever evolving, ever mutating abilities to kill and kill and kill. But one little ball-busting human female is about crash through not only Quinn's necessary emotional barriers, but the elusive barriers of the disease that continually morphs its shields.

Dr. Jasmine Kane, a hematologist for the Center for Disease Control, is going stir crazy after a bomb in Sierra Leone knocked her out of commission, placing her on virtual house arrest from the CDC until her injuries have healed. Seeing as that could take several more weeks, Jasmine jumps at the call from her best friend Phoebe in New Mexico and the possibility to get back into a lab doing what she does best. However, along the way a flat tire forces Jasmine to take refuge at a bar in Texas, putting her face to face with the most compelling and sexually attractive man she's ever come into contact with. His burning gaze, strikingly tall physique and rough growl has her burning from within and falling into bed for the most mind altering one night stand of her life. But if the past has taught her anything, is that it's never a good idea to let a man be in control and Quinn poses the very real possibility of enslaving her heart forever. What's left for girl to do but run. Jokes on Jazz though because she runs not simply to the safety of her best friend but to Quinn and his lab which will serve as her home for the next several weeks.

Caught off guard by the intense night and subsequent frustrating morning searching for Jazz who absconded with the rise of the sun, Quinn finds himself facing the fact that he's miraculously mated with a woman that he can't find. The evidence is in the new purple hued tribal band encircling his arm. Lucky for fate, Jazz is the doctor from CDC that Quinn's future queen, Phoebe, recommended to help fight the disease. Quinn doesn't know who's more surprised, him or Jazz when she walks into his lab. Relief fights with anger at Jazz's sudden appearance but Quinn's still in for the biggest surprise yet. With Jasmine, he finds more than he bargained for with his mate. For one, she's human, but beyond that minor speed bump, Quinn always imagined that he'd settle down with a woman that needed him and his protection. Never once did he think that his destined mate would be a risk-taker, a fighter who subjected herself to the most dire and stressful areas of the world. But Quinn can't deny that for the first time in forever someone has looked to him not simply for answers, but to actually look and see and understand the real him and recognize his pain and defeat and strive to help him.

Jazz can't help but notice that the dragon shifters around Quinn take him and his expert act for granted. The man is in an acute amount of pain not just from using his healing gift, but an emotional pain that it unlike anything she's ever seen. Quinn blames himself for everything. For every death. For every hour that passes and a cure has not been found to save his clan. He's walking this line of guilt alone too for while he's surrounded by others who are suffering, he is the Dragonstar healer who can't heal. But it's dangerous for Jasmine to think this way about Quinn. While she's accepted that sex can't be avoided with the man for he makes her body weep in a need that can't be ignored, he still poses a threat to her heart that Jazz will not stand for. So the war rages on not only within Jasmine's heart and soul but on the streets of the small New Mexico town the Dragonstars inhabit.

Someone is betraying the Dragonstars to the rival Wyvernmoon clan. The smaller clan with territory in Northern Middle America, has been seeking for decades to steal the rich land of the Dragonstars. Presumed to be the clan that created the disease preying upon the Dragonstars, the Wyvernmoons also seek to infiltrate Dragonstar territory to take down Dragonstar sentries themselves and someone is giving the Wyverns easy access across the Dragonstar magical safeguards. Until the betrayer is caught, no is safe. When Quinn, Phoebe and Jazz make a huge break through in understanding the disease that's ravaging their people, notice is taken and the Wyvernmoons make their big move to strike at the very heart of the Dragonstars.

The Heroine:

Fearless, intelligent, and a woman that never backs down from a fight, Jasmine Kane is not one to be trifled with. Quick to attack but also quick to save, Jazz gives every fight her all. But what she doesn't have is patience for men trying to dominate her or the situation in an effort to be macho. She's survived enough overbearing control from her father to know that a man can't help but turn into a possessive cavemen when faced with a woman they've claimed as theirs. Jazz is her own woman and she'll keep that way. But Quinn Maguire makes all her "I'll never need or want a man" defenses crumble. He's a man that's clearly in need a woman's comfort and care but she's not that kind of woman. Right? Quinn softens the harsh points of Jazz's heart and despite all her efforts to fight his allure, she can't stop her heart or body from wanting his touch or his love.

The Hero:

Strong, intelligent, and in possession of a heart bigger than he knows how to handle, Quinn Maguire has been on a decade's long losing streak with a disease that has left him the sole survivor of his family. He's a broken man dedicating the last of his strength to his people. Sharing Jasmine's soul deep desire to heal, Quinn recognizes his own tenacious strength in Jazz. And while she may be the exact opposite of what he thought he wanted in a woman, Quinn soon discovers that Jasmine's perfect for him in every way and he'll not let her run without a fight. Like a boon from fate, Jazz breathes life back into Quinn's wounded soul and he'll do everything in his power to keep her.

My Final Thoughts:

HIDDEN EMBERS is a no holds barred epic romance where no emotion is left unscathed. Hope and passion war with death and heartbreak and no one is safe, not from love nor from disease. I must say, Tessa Adams took some big risks with this second installment in her Dragon's Heat series. For one, Jasmine is fearless and incredibly independent and she approaches each of her decisive actions with absolute confidence...except for when it comes to matters of the heart. The woman walks - runs rather - knowingly away from the best thing in her life, she purposefully denies her true feelings and focuses on the superficial to drive Quinn away. Lucky for her, the man is not giving her up. Anyone else and Jazz would still be alone. While I admit to experiencing frustration with Jazz, the woman does own up to her faults and for that, I liked her.

Adams herself is fearless as she rains down acute tragedy upon HIDDEN EMBERS. I've read some tragic scenes in romance but I'm thinkin' that Adams takes the cake here. Girl had me in tears! She doesn't joke around with the dire situation the Dragonstars are facing either. In addition, Adams excels beautifully at making this complex disease she's created believable and better yet, its understandable. She gets the reader involved too for I felt like a scientist right along with Quinn and Jasmine, analysing and breaking apart this killer disease. You feel these shifters and their desperation to survive. You feel the injustice and the need for revenge against those that are attacking you so ruthlessly. Gotta love that!

Finally, the romance truly was a delight as well. Quinn is pure hero and I absolutely loved everything about him. Again, Adams seamlessly meshes plot and sex with HIDDEN EMBERS. Despite the complex plot layers surrounding the war and the disease, the romance takes true center stage and nothing about Quinn's and Jazz's relationship is sacrificed. From beginning to end, I was in love with this story!

For paranormal romance fans yearning for an intensely emotional read, a sexually explosive romance, and the action that only a sinister villian can create, get your hands on HIDDEN EMBERS!! Enjoy!

What's Up Wednesday! (10)

What's Up Wednesday is a little weekly post that I'm hosting. Just something short and sweet about what's new with me, the romance realm and what ever else strikes my fancy.

So, what's up with me?

My worst flaw, in my opinion, is that I'm lazy. With a lot a things. Some are inconsequential and others have more of an impact upon my life than I often care to admit.

This laziness of mine affects a lot of things but one area of my life that I most regret not making more of an effort to maintain is my friendships. I've lost friends because of my laziness along this road of my life and recently I was met with a crossroads where laziness would either take me one way or another.

My friend since first grade recently had a baby. She's a woman who has wanted to be a mom since we were kids and I'm so happy that she's finally made it to this monumental moment in her life. Given all the changes a baby creates, over the last nine months, we've had trouble staying in touch. But even beyond that, our relationship became strained when she moved an hour and a half north of me a few years ago. Needless to say, getting together has been difficult even more so now with the baby.  So, as of today, I haven't seen her in six months. We've called each other maybe twice during that time wanting to get together but plans never made it to fruition. This is when my laziness kicks in. Do I put forth that extra effort and do more than her to make our friendship last, or do I wait for her to make the move?

The fact is, my friend's life has recently changed dramatically from my own and I need to be understandable and respectful of that. But there is a deeper issue: my own insecurities have reared their ugly heads and I'm unsure if a friendship is sustainable given that we are at such drastically different ends of life's spectrum. Such the question of whether or not I want to call and make an effort gives laziness its chance to step in. I could just let it all go. I could make no active effort on my part with some excuse like she's busy and I'll just wait for her to have a moment to spare me a thought. Am I willing to risk my friendship of nearly 22 years simply because I can't deal and that it's easier to just wait? This is what I've been asking myself.

I'm proud to say though that I didn't succumb to laziness or my insecurities. I made the call and set a date with my friend. We're going to talk about this friendship of ours and I'm going to be honest in a hopeful effort that we do not let our relationship fall by the wayside. And I'm feeling pretty good about it too. Take that laziness!

Weekend Movie Review!

"Fair Game" featuring Naomi Watts and Sean Penn, is based on two memoirs, one by Valerie Plame Wilson, former CIA covert operative, and one by her husband, Joe Wilson. Valerie Plame's CIA identity was revealed by White House Officials to allegedly discredit her husband after he wrote a 2003 New York Times article debunking the Bush administration and the President's claim that Iraq was in possession of weapons of mass destruction. I'm not going to get into politics where this movie is concerned, but regardless of how you voted, this is still an interesting and thought provoking film. After viewing, I recommend looking up Valerie Plame Wilson on wiki to compare.

"Black Swan" featuring Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis and Vincent Cassel. I've been dying to see this film and went into the viewing with some pretty high expectations especially after all the accolades it has won. Portman plays a virgin-like ballerina obsessed with perfection but while she doesn't lack the technique or the innocence of the white swan, she does lack the sexual awareness and seduction skills needed to effectively play the black swan in the ballet, Swan Lake. With this production, the director (Cassel) is looking for a ballerina that can play both the black and the white swan which is typically played by two separate ballerinas. He at first rejects Portman's audition based on the fact that she could never embody the bold sexuality of the black swan but she changes his mind when she fleeting lets down her guard, showing a woman with bite. Yet Portman still continues to have issues embodying the sexual essence of the black swan while also competing with her jealousy and her desire for a new company ballerina played by Mila Kunis. Sexually explicit with shocking language and gruesome scenes, "Black Swan" will have you squirming in your seat, blinking in shock, and covering your eyes. A very interesting psychological thriller that I wouldn't recommend to just everyone. I enjoyed it. The hubs didn't.

"Tangled" voiced by Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi. While providing audiences with the beautiful visionary techniques of computer animation, "Tangled" is truly a throw back to old Disney with characters constantly bursting into song, minimal to no hidden sexual innuendo and more. I was really, really excited to see this movie. Rapunzel is often overlooked and it was about time she got her own film. While cute and fun, the bursting into song moments got old but otherwise, this was enjoyable movie. Great for the kidlets, obviously.

New Covers!!

ARCHANGEL'S BLADE by Nalini Singh

Releases September 6, 2011

New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh is back in the shadows of a deadly, beautiful world where angels rule, vampires serve, and one female hunter must crawl out of the darkness to survive…

The severed head marked by a distinctive tattoo on its cheek should have been a Guild case, but dark instincts honed over hundreds of years of life compel the vampire Dmitri to take control. There is something twisted about this death, something that whispers of centuries long past…but Dmitri’s need to discover the truth is nothing to the vicious strength of his response to the hunter assigned to decipher the tattoo.

Savaged in a brutal attack that almost killed her, Honor is nowhere near ready to come face to face with the seductive vampire who is an archangel’s right hand, and who wears his cruelty as boldly as his lethal sensuality…the same vampire who has been her secret obsession since the day she was old enough to understand the inexplicable, violent emotions he aroused in her.

As desire turns into a dangerous compulsion that might destroy them both, it becomes clear the past will not stay buried. Something is hunting…and it will not stop until it brings a blood-soaked nightmare to life once more…
Ugh! I'm so disappointed in this cover but I'm absolutely DYING for its contents!!

Their ranks are thin, and their only hope lies in Cecily Fournier, the princess whose grasp on the throne is shaky at best. All he has to do is stick around long enough to see his enemies fail.

The plan is foolproof. Until he falls for Cecily.

What starts as an uneasy alliance turns into an uncontrollable passion. As the spark between them gets hotter, Logan discovers the Wyvermoon’s hidden agenda. But how can he bring down the Wyvermoons without exposing himself as a traitor to the woman he loves?
Lovin' this series! I'm likin' the cover too. Especially that tattoo.
