Review: ROCK HARD by Olivia Cunning

Review: ROCK HARD by Olivia Cunning

Two years ago, Sed gave Jessica an ultimatum and she broke his heart by leaving without a backwards glance. Since then, he’s tried to forget her by screwing any woman who will have him. But deep down, Sed still loves Jessica. Seeing her working in a strip club, with all those men gawking at her, sends Sed into a jealous rage. Jessica belongs to him…

Heartbroken, Jessica made her choice and ended their engagement. Jessica still hates Sed and knows one mere woman will never satisfy his over-inflated ego or insatiable sexual appetite. So when Sed shows up at the strip club where she’s working for the summer, and yanks her off the stage, she’s furious. She doesn’t need Sed. Never did, never will.

But she does want him. And who wouldn’t? The man is delicious—sexy, virile, and amazing in bed.

Thanks to Sed’s posturing, Jessica finds herself jobless, homeless, and desperate. She has no choice but to take a summer job that has her trapped on Sinners’ tour bus with the impossibly sexy jerk for two entire months. And, curse it all, the passion between them is hotter than ever!

Genre: Erotic Contemporary Romance

Single Title/Series: ROCK HARD is Book Two in the Sinners on Tour Series. While it can possibly be read as a stand alone, the couple from Book One, BACKSTAGE PASS, makes a heavy appearance plus, there's not a lot of page time dedicated to catching the reader up on the band members. This reviewer would encourage new series readers to start at the beginning.

Cover Thoughts: There's nothing amazing about the cover. However, props must be given to the fact that it adequately conveys the nature of the erotic content beneath it.

Origin: I received an Advanced Review Copy from Sourcebooks in exchange for an honest review.

My Review:

The Plot:

Two years ago, Jessica Chase was on the ultimate high. Engaged to Sedric Lionheart, the not-yet-famous lead singer of the hard rock band Sinners, and recently accepted to law school, Jessica was in a state of bliss. That is until Sed forbade her to go to law school and achieve her dreams. Instead, he expected her to marry him, tour with him, and be his beck-n-call girl. Well, Jessica may have wanted Sed but she didn't need him and proved it when she walked out the door without a backward glance.

Fast forward to the present. Sinners is now a global phenomenon. Meanwhile, Jessica is struggling to pay for college by reluctantly stripping at a Las Vegas night club for summer break while also facing academic probation. Just when her life couldn't be in anymore turmoil, Sed has to walk into her night club, on her shift, and witness her bare ass gyrating on a pole. Needless to say, the incident doesn't go over well and Jessica soon finds herself jobless, homeless and potentially unable to pay her tuition for the fall semester. It's about time she exacted her revenge and ruin the life of the man that's effectively ruined hers for the second time.

Sed Lionheart has never gotten over Jessica or the fact that she's the only woman to have ever dumped him. Sure he's physically gotten over her for not a single night has gone by without a lady or two...or three, warming his bed but for two years, he's always imagined Jessica upon their countless faces. Now she's back in his life - hating him - but Sed will take Jessica anyway he can have her. Better to have an angry Jessica than no Jessica at all. Plus, it's sweet heaven when she can't deny that the passion between them is still a raging inferno and that no amount of water could every hope to dose out the flames. But when Jessica makes it clear to Sed that she's just using his body, he can't help but admit to himself that it hurts to know that he can't find someone who could just love him for him; not for just his body or his fame, but for him. And the fact is that Sed still loves Jessica and he's determined to make her love him once again too.

The Heroine:

Embodying the killer female combo of being both beautiful and intelligent, Jessica chafes against not only unwanted male attention but the hurtful female hatred that comes repeatedly her way. And given all the attention, Jessica isn't totally oblivious of her own sex appeal, but the last thing she wants or needs is a man. All she wants is to finish law school and accomplish her dream of helping people by being a good lawyer. But because of Jess's hot looks and big boobs, getting people to take her seriously has never been easy and it only makes her fight harder to prove herself and maintain her control over her dreams.

Having never gotten over Sed herself, Jessica's resistance where he's concerned flies out the window the moment his lips touch hers. But in her mind, Sed hasn't changed. He's still trying to control her by taking away her choices when it comes to money and their relationship. The only time Jessica can withstand Sed's bossiness is in the bedroom but that doesn't make her any less wary of his larger-than-life need to dominate. Jessica wants to be his equal but that goal seems pointless and therefore she instead strives to deny her heart from the love that threatens to overtake her sanity.

The Hero:

Lead singer of Sinners and long regarded as the beauty of the group, Sed is a man driven to take care of those he considers his. A born leader, the need to "fix" things is an aching force inside Sed that constantly propels him into action. With his band mates, Sed's drive has not only propelled them to stardom, but it has also served to make them each better musicians in one way or another. However, the good side effects end there. Sed's caring need has a tendency to mutate into a steamrolling effect as he a crushes the choices others all in an attempt to do what he feels is the best for them. Case in point: Jessica. Sed's need to take care of her only served to drive a wedge between them.

When Jessica returns to Sed's life, it takes a long while for him to realize that he and his need to "fix" things have caused more harm than good. All he wants is to take care of her. But as Sed learns that he's stifling Jessica instead of giving her the support she needs without inadvertently being a dictator, he tries to "fix" things again, this time in the attempt to give her room to accomplish her dreams but he only manages to make matters worse once again. Fact is, Sed is who is and he'll never curtail the drive completely. It's who is at his core but he'll have to learn to compromise for he's fallen in love with the one woman that he can never hope to control.

My Final Thoughts:

Another steaming hot addition to the Sinners On Tour Series, ROCK HARD delivers sex, rock stars, and the high's and low's of fame to the fullest with never a dull moment to be had. Featuring a spitfire of a heroine and a hero that's all lazy, bad boy charm, this read could never be classified as boring but tantalizingly HAWT! Seriously, hardly a chapter goes by without some sort of public sex scene popping up and making your toes curl. Needless to say, ROCK HARD is rockin' satisfaction on the sex front. And I can't say that the charm ends there but I did encounter a few aspects of the read that left me wanting.

Unfortunately, I felt that all of Sed's and Jessica's troubles could have been cleared up with a single conversation. This isn't necessarily a bad thing for ROCK HARD. For one, the book is 90% sex and to have any emotional issues too in depth could have left a lot of open holes at the end due to simple lack of page time. But still, I would have liked to have seen less repeated angst over the same old issue. Better put, Sed and Jessica felt more immature than anything when it came to Sed's need to be a guiding caregiver and Jess's need to make her own decisions. What was nice, however, is that both Sed and Jessica are cut from the same cloth. They're both caregivers in their own way which made them extremely compatible together.

In addition, and in an effort not to spoil things, I must point out one debilitating fact: I wanted Sed to go after Jessica. It all boils down to the fact that Sed never went after Jessica two years ago and now, when he has this serendipitous moment where the universe has deemed him worthy of a second chance, he ups and pulls an intentional repeat all for the sake of what he feels is for Jessica's own good. It was as if he didn't learn anything, as if he made no character evolution from beginning to end, and more fatally, as if he still didn't know Jessica. A pretty deflating moment for me to say the least and where I once, up until that point, was going to rate the book 4.5 stars, I couldn't. I was and still am too upset with the fact that Jessica had to come back to Sed instead of the other way around. Jessica deserved more.

But enough of the bad. The good news is, I genuinely like this author and you better believe I'll be in line for book three. And while I may have rated BACKSTAGE PASS and ROCK HARD the same, the latter is definitely my favorite of the two. The love Olivia Cunning has for music and men is palpable. The woman is also a genius at writing sex. Cunning pushes boundaries but never once does she push sex into the raunchy category. In other words, it was never too dirty to read or enjoy. I also felt that she did a better job at making each Sinners bandmate accessible and readily identifiable. I had trouble remembering who was who in BACKSTAGE PASS but in ROCK HARD, Cunning gives each man more stage time which was very much appreciated by this reader and reviewer.

ROCK HARD is everything its title implies for its one rockin' good time. If you like it fast and sexy with a double does of public fornication, look no farther than this purple-clad roller coaster of a read. Enjoy!

What's Up Wednesday! (9)

What's Up Wednesday is a little weekly post that I'm hosting. Just something short and sweet about what's new with me, the romance realm and what ever else strikes my fancy.

So, what's up with me?

I have the worst nightmares.

I've read that your dreams are constructed in your subconscious from things viewed or experienced in your everyday life but I can't find any similarities between my dreams and my waking hours. Instead of believing all that mumbo-jumbo, I came to the conclusion long ago that I simply have a warped imagination. However, there are things that fuel it like scary movies or real life events. I refuse to watch scary movies which sucks for Mr. VFG because he loves them. They don't scare him. He says that he's able to rationalize the events as nothing but acting and creative effects which is true, duh, but I can't seem to do that. Instead, I find myself the only one awake later that night, pumped full of adrenalin, jumping at every wall creak in the house and ready to defend my sound asleep husband and I from the bogeyman.

It's a running joke that when Mr. VFG and I decided to have mini VFG's, I'll be under the bed with the kidlets after believing their fear of the ghost in the closet! It'll happen too. I've no doubt.

Weekend Movie Review!

"Morning Glory" featuring Rachel McAdams, Diane Keaton, and Harrison Ford. Rachel McAdams is one of my favorite actresses. I love that while she's stunning, she still feels accessible as the girl the next door. As a young news producer, McAdams gets the career chance of a life time to bring the uninspiring and soon to be cancelled morning news program DayBreak back to life. While juggling diva anchor Diane Keaton, McAdams brings in one time news reporter heavyweight, Harrison Ford, to pump credibility back into DayBreak. Of course everything goes wrong but this is also when McAdams's character learns who she is and how to juggle her own life outside of her job. A cute movie with no real rhyme or reason to its plot, "Morning Glory" is a pleasurable past time that engages you just enough to be entertained. I felt no real like or dislike for the movie once it ended but it didn't feel like a waste of time either.

"Faster", obviously chosen by Mr. VFG, features Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Billy Bob Thorton. Typical revenge plot, Johnson's brother is killed and Johnson swears to have his revenge on all the parties involved. And that's exactly what he does with nothing and no one stopping him despite all the nationwide news coverage and the fact that the police knows who he is. The killing is gory and in your face with head execution shot after another. And that's pretty much it. Not bad but not good and the hubs liked it.

"The Tourist" featuring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. Let me get right to the point, while stunning to watch, there is no pumping life in this plot. I have NO idea how both of these actors were nominated for Golden Globes for their performances in "The Tourist". What performance? Let's just face facts. Jolie and Depp are Hollywood's prom king and queen and they were honored that way with their nominations. I must say though, I never got tired of looking at Angelina. Her beauty really is hard to grasp and some how, its amplified to an even higher degree with "The Tourist". I have never seen her look more beautiful. So, if it's pretty faces you want to see, check out "The Tourist". If you're looking for a plot, go elsewhere because you ain't gonna find it here.

Review: THE VAMPIRE VOSS by Colleen Gleason

Review: THE VAMPIRE VOSS by Colleen Gleason

Regency London - a dizzying whirl of balls and young ladies pursued by charming men.

But the Woodmore sisters are hunted by a more sinister breed: Lucifer's own.

Voss, also known as Viscount Dewhurst, relishes the sensual pleasures immortality affords. A member of the Dracule - a cabal of powerful, secretive noblemen marked with a talisman that reveals their bartered souls - the mercenary Voss has remained carefully neutral...until Angelica.

Angelica Woodmore possesses the Sight, an ability invaluable to both sides of a looming war among the Dracule. Her very scent envelops Voss in a scarlet fog of hunger - for her body and blood. But he is utterly unprepared for the new desire that overcomes him - to protect her.
Publisher: Mira, March 2011

Genre: Historical, Regency Romance

Single Title/Series: THE VAMPIRE VOSS is Book One in The Regency Draculia Series.

Cover Thoughts: I love that its incredibly unique amongst the rainbow of colors generally featured on Regency Romance covers. It has this exotic edge that immediately draws you to it. Honestly, everything about this look calls to my paranormal love. Love it! And bonus, all the subsequent series installments mimic this same enticing look.

Origin: I requested and received THE VAMPIRE VOSS from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

My Review:

The Plot:

It's all about me when it comes to one hundred and forty-eight year old Viscount Dewhurst, better known as Voss. Back from the colonies and ready to resume his rightful place as the now and once again young London Viscount, Voss wastes little time before embedding himself with both the local Draculia and the ton. A very exclusive club, the Draculia have only sworn allegiance to one: Lucifer. All stemming from the same ancestral tree commencing with Vlad the Impaler, each brethren vampire accepted his curse in a dream and now each walk through life immortal.

In the world of rich and titled gentlemen, some collect art, some collect wine, some collect women, and sometimes there are those gentlemen that collect all three. Voss? He collects secrets. Some of these secrets he'll sell to the highest and undiscriminated bidder and others, more importantly one single collection of secrets, Voss keeps entirely for himself and purely for his own amusement. In this paranormal world, each Dracule or vampire has a uniquely individual weakness that if discovered, could spell that vampire's doom. Are the Draculia immortal? Yes. Are they able to defy a beheading, a wooden stake to the heart, or sunlight? No. In addition, each vampire has their own personal bringer of death that can be anything ranging from the absurdly generic like silver, or something more obtuse like a rare hothouse flower. For years Voss has collected these weaknesses amongst his brethren, coyly showcasing his power when need be. And now, in addition to perpetuating his century long and amusing annoyance against the Earl of Corvindale, Voss also seeks the earl's ward who's rumored to have the Sight and all the juicy secrets he hopes to seductively pillage.

While there's nothing new or unique about her older brother vacating his younger sisters for weeks or sometimes months at a time, placing Angelica Woodmore and her older sister Maia under the care of the Earl of Corvindale's guardianship certainly is very much unlike Chas. Not knowing where their brother is or whether or not he's alive, Angelica and Maia try their best to go about their normal life. However, normal is relative for Angelica. Having been cursed with the Sight, Angelica can determine from any artifact when that artifact's owner will die. Having spent years learning to control her visions, Angelica now sells them to the young women in society, helping them with their marriage choices. But something new has transpired or rather developed. Angelica is now having dreams of death and she recognizes the man dying in her recent dream at a ball. How was she to know that by doing what she felt was an obligated duty and telling this man of his death that she would incur the undivided attention of another man who's attention, heretofore, has been firmly focused on himself.

Voss's infatuation with Angelica, while slow to start, is soon steam rolling out of control along with his ability to reign in his more baser and ravenous needs for her blood. Also, for the first time Voss finds himself in the role of protector. He's not the only one after the Woodmore sisters. Their brother Chas has become mixed up with a very deadly and rival faction of the London Draculia: Cezar Moldavi and his minions of Made vampires - vampires not created directly by Lucifer. Moldavi will stop at nothing to find Chas and the Woodmore sisters are the most expedient means of accomplishing his goal. Battling not only countless attacks from Moldavi's vamps but his own vicious need for Angelica, Voss does what he can to keep her safe from both fronts while also preserving the trust that he's painstakingly cultivated. But Voss is coming to rapid and alarming conclusion: he doesn't ever want to hurt Angelica nor steal her secrets for his own personal gain. For once, Voss is determined to take care of someone other than himself.

The Heroine:

Angelica may appear the proper society miss on the outside but on the inside, she's quite rebellious, unfashionably straightforward and blunt. She's also, thankfully, not a dim-witted, too-stupid-to-live heroine having made an early peace with death after being forced to endure its darkness since she was old enough to understand its meaning. When faced with the proof that vampires exist, she's rather repulsed and rightfully terrified but never out of sorts. Angelica takes things with stride while also being quick and sound of mind to fight back when it's her own death possibly on the line. What she can't take is lies and Voss is an oh so smooth liar. His betrayal of not disclosing that he too is in fact a vampire sets back their romance quite forcefully but his unyielding determination to keep Angelica safe makes for a very dangerous infatuation that her heart can't refuse.

The Hero:

Delightfully charismatic and self absorbed, Voss is sheer force bulldozing across the page, overshadowing the pragmatic Angelica on more than one occasion. He's debonair and skillfully charming in addition to the fact that the man has it easy on almost all accounts when it comes to getting what he wants, especially from the ladies. And if there's resistance, well he'll simply use his irresistible thrall to smooth his selfish way.

For 148 years, Voss has thought only of himself and it's more than difficult to break a man of that kind of aged habit. But Angelica poses two incredibly life altering thoughts for Voss that effectively change everything. One, she forces him to recognize the routine of his life and the fact that as an immortal, he'll face the same endless days of shallow entertainment forever. And two, for the first time in 148 years, Voss thinks of not only death, but his own death. Upon these realizations, Voss discovers his life for the emptiness it truly is and it's only in this moment that he makes the choice to do something not for himself, but for another.

My Final Thoughts:

THE VAMPIRE VOSS was a most welcome and pleasurable surprise. True, the novel starts slow and rather disenchanting but as it picks up speed, so did this reader's interest. First, I'll admit to having a thang for self absorbed heroes. The incredible fascination they have with themselves is blinding when that same infatuation falls upon their heroines and Voss and Angelica are no exception. Voss's selfishness, however, is almost a demon in an of itself for it works to taint his budding relationship with Angelica countless times. While I hate to tarnish the book, there are several scenes where Voss sleeps with other women but the man is 148 years old; his wild habits won't be brought to heel quickly. Not only that, his Dracule nature is embedded within this very selfishness and it drives him to commit unheroic acts. I was able to reconcile myself with Voss's "infidelities" as a romance hero because his journey toward the end is endearing and more importantly, its believable.

Angelica, sadly, pales in comparison to Voss but I must say that she is most unique when viewed out from beneath Voss's glowing aura. Likely to be the sole paranormal romance heroine to not find the sucking of blood erotic, Angelica's repulsion of Voss more than instigates him to change, it gave a new feel to paranormal romance. Colleen Gleason's vampires, while most are not overly cruel, their Dracule nature is a burden to them all, a painful one at times even. It's a dark faucet of their nature that is a flaw rather than a virtue. Honestly, it was an interesting dichotomy. But to get back to Voss and Angelica, I enjoyed the pairing. Angelica served to heal Voss and for that, I found her perfect for her role.

Finally, this world of the Draculia is an interesting one and unique amongst paranormal romance which is saying something. For one, the Regency setting not only engages paranormal and historical romance lovers alike, but viewing the cruel world of the Draculia against the tittering backdrop of the London ton, makes for a wonderful dichotomy for it engages an awesome push and pull between propriety and hedonism. Plus, the history of the Dracule is interesting and again, it makes it unique amongst paranormal romance. Suffice it to say that this read stands out and I'm looking forward to whatever new and unveiled surprises that are sure to be had in the following two series installments.

For paranormal AND historical romance lovers, THE VAMPIRE VOSS will be a satisfying indulgence that will surely leave you hungering for more. Enjoy!

How to Write a Sequel

Thanks so much for having me over, VampFanGirl!

Since my sequel to Master of None comes out today, I thought I’d share with you the process for writing a sequel, which is different from the process for writing a novel. For one thing, it leaves about 15 percent more blood on the keyboard from all that head-banging – but I’ll get into that soon.

In writing a novel, you come up with some characters and get to know them while you mercilessly torment them... er, send them on exciting adventures and eventually resolve everything with a big, satisfying ending. It’s different for a sequel. There are rules. And challenges. And... complications.

So, here’s how to write a sequel.

1. Take the characters from your first book. Depending on how long it’s been since you finished writing said first book (or what you did to them in it), these characters may be happy to get started again, or harder to engage than a disinterested lizard.

2. Come up with a villain. Once you have a villain, decide that he or she is all wrong, and come up with a new villain. Discard that one, too. Decide to pit your characters against themselves and write a story based on dramatic inner conflict. Realize that’s a stupid idea, and conceive Yet Another Villain. When the new villain turns out to be lame, angrily resolve to create a whole bunch of villains instead of just one. Go with that.

3. Introduce the characters to the villain(s). It’s important to do this early in the story, so that things are happening. So bring on the villain(s), and when your main character takes one look and says, “Oh, hell to the no,” and walks away, threaten to stick him in a dress and make him star in a Broadway musical.

4. After the first conflict, reintroduce the secondary characters. Realize that you’ve forgotten what they’re supposed to look like. Go back and read the first book. Cringe in horror and stop writing for a week while you hate yourself for writing such a steaming pile of dreck, that is now available for public consumption. Contemplate wearing a bag over your head in public, or possibly changing your name and moving to Micronesia. Remember that you have a deadline this time, and look up the necessary details as fast as possible, skimming the dreck that is your first novel. Resolve to use spreadsheets from now on, even though you’re about as organized as a hurricane.

MASTER OF NONE
 5. Write two-thirds of the book. Once you’ve built up a really good feeling and are confident that you’ll be able to finish the sequel, suddenly run headfirst into a ten-foot-thick concrete plot snag. Watch the story momentum die an immediate, agonizing death. Spend three weeks alternately panicking and banging your head on the keyboard (see earlier comment RE: 15 percent more blood). Finally come up with a brand new character that solves 99 percent of the remaining problems – who must be inserted somewhere around chapter two. Go back and write a new chapter two. Rename all subsequent chapters, and cuss like a sailor every time you find a new scene that needs to be changed to accommodate the new character. Finally get back to the part where you left off.

6. Reach the exciting story climax. Realize that a little throwaway rule you made in the first book makes your planned final showdown impossible to pull off. Yank every hair out of your head. Buy a wig, and use it to strangle your computer. Commence fresh head-banging. Clean the blood out of your keyboard and start a different final showdown. Realize it’s better than the first idea. Hope it’s not because you’ve banged all the sense and good story judgment out of your head trying to get this far.

7. Write the last chapter. Tie off all the plot threads. Type THE END. Feel somewhat happy that you seem to have a coherent story, with characters that have shown growth and development from the first story, and a plot that makes sense and doesn’t break the rules. Celebrate by getting very drunk. Realize that your story ends too abruptly, and you have to write another chapter to finish it. Get much drunker.

8. Write the real last chapter. Decide that you’re never going to be happy anyway, so you might as well stop now. Send the story to your agent, convinced that she’ll get back to you and ask what kind of drugs you were on when you wrote this crap, or whether it’s an April Fool’s joke and where’s the real manuscript for the sequel. Feel utterly relieved when she says it’s better than the first one. Resolve to never write another sequel again.

9. Have an idea for another sequel. Shoot yourself in the head. Like a rock star.

10. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this instructional, precise and informative discussion on how to write a sequel. If you have any questions, I’ll be over here at the bar, plotting the best way to kill my characters off before I have another idea for a sequel.

Guest Post:

Thanks so much for having me, VampFanGirl. It’s a pleasure being here and meeting your readers. Since I write urban fantasy and paranormal thrillers, I thought I’d discuss why the paranormal has always held my heart.

My love for the paranormal, the glimmering moonlit world of the supernatural, is that of a child.

A child believes that the shadows beneath her bed conceal openings into other worlds, some monstrous (and thrilling), some magical. And both require only that she close her eyes and dangle a hand from her bed to await either the rough clasp of taloned fingers or the soft brush of feathers against her palm or . . . Ah, the possibilities are endless.

And whatever she feels when she allows her hand to slide from beneath the protective shield of her blankets, she’ll be tugged into a world different from the one she dwells in. Worlds of dark and radiant possibilities, a world in which she might be needed.

As a savior. As a changeling returned home. Or just as food.

As adults, our beliefs narrow. Possibilities and potential vanish beneath the weight of reason and science—the language of our minds and our intellects. But the language of the heart, the yearning soul, is always that of possibility.

Whenever I hear “Doesn’t exist” or “There’s no such thing,” the words whispering through my mind and stoking the fire in my heart are: Says who? A child’s mantra. Stubborn and willful and brimming with magic.

Two of my favorite shows are Supernatural and Being Human. Both reveal what lies nestled in thick shadows beneath the bed: whatever we fear or desire (and sometimes we fear most what we desire and vice versa); beings crafted from nightmare and vivid waking dreams.

Walking to your car on a late moonless night, all alone on the street, is that a beautiful pale face peeking from the shadows within the alley? A glint of lambent eyes? A hungry face?

As you climb up from the basement laundry room is the creak on the steps behind you simply an echo or something following you, something black and glowing with embers, thick horns curving up from either side of the skull?

As you stand at the sink washing dishes, will you see someone/something looking back at you when you glance out the night-filled window?

And is that the wind rustling through the leaves in your trees or is the rush of massive wings?

The Maker's Song
Series Book One
The first book in The Maker’s Song series, A Rush of Wings, is a world of vampires, fallen angels, and mortals; a complex and ancient world FBI Special Agent Heather Wallace doesn’t know exists. Like most mortals, she believes in the world she sees, unaware that humans are not alone and never have been.

But that changes for Heather when tracks a serial killer, one she’s hunted for three years, a sadistic murderer known as the Cross Country Killer, to New Orleans, Club Hell, and a young man named Dante. The dangerously attractive musician not only resists her investigation, he claims to be “nightkind”, which Heather quickly learns means vampire.

Digging into Dante’s past for answers reveals little. A juvenile record. No social security number. No known birth date. In and out of foster homes for most of his life before being taken in by a man named Lucien De Noir, who appears to guard secrets of his own.

What Heather does know about Dante is that something links him to the killer—and she’s pretty sure that link makes him the CCK’s next target. Heather must unravel the truth about this sensual, complicated, vulnerable young man—who, she begins to believe, may indeed be a vampire—in order to finally bring a killer to justice. But Dante’s past holds a shocking, dangerous secret, and once it is revealed not even Heather will be able to protect Dante from his destiny.

Tumble into that world of dark possibilities along with Heather—the story continues with In the Blood, Beneath the Skin, and the just released Etched in Bone. (I’m currently working on the fifth book in the series, On Midnight Wings.)

You can read a chapter from the book that started it all. Here’s a link to a sample chapter of A Rush of Wings.

With Book Four, Etched in Bone, Dante faces his destiny and searches for a way to accept it on his own terms. To make his life, his own, at long last, and with Heather at his side. The former FBI agent is more than his partner and lover, she is also his anchor, his beacon, guiding him back from the edge of madness when his shattered past rises up and swallows him. But in Heather’s human family awaits an unexpected enemy. One who could force Dante to choose his darkest destiny—as the Great Destroyer.

Here’s a link to the first two chapters of Etched in Bone.

Etched in Bone is also a featured read for March on BN.com’s Paranormal and Urban Fantasy Book Club – which I’m very excited about.

I also have a second urban fantasy series about Kallie Rivière, a Cajun hoodoo apprentice with a bent for trouble, a series full of magic, revenge hungry root doctors, sexy nomads, loa and loups garous. The first book, Black Dust Mambo came out last July, and the second, Black Heart Loa, will be released July 2011.

Here’s a link to the first chapter of Black Dust Mambo.

THE ART OF SEDUCING A NAKED WEREWOLF by Molly Harper

Naked Werewolf Series Book Two

Baring It All

Generations of werewolves have been secretly residing in a secluded valley a stone’s throw from Grundy, Alaska. So when a snooping Outsider comes to Grundy to investigate rumors of lycanthropic shenanigans in the area, the valley’s pack alpha, Maggie Graham, resolves to chase him away, even if doing so takes a quick bite on the butt. What a pity that researcher Nick Thatcher turns out to be so drool-worthy, and that his kisses make Maggie want to sit up and beg. Maggie just can’t seem to convince Nick to leave . . . and even worse, she can’t convince herself to stay away from him. Cross-species dating is problem enough for a harried alpha female, but on top of that, a rival group of werewolves is trying to move into the valley. With interpack war threatening, Maggie can’t afford to be distracted. Combining romance and a career can be tough for anyone; for a werewolf in love with a human, it may be disastrous. . . .

What's Up Wednesday! (8)

What's Up Wednesday is a little weekly post that I'm hosting. Just something short and sweet about what's new with me, the romance realm and what ever else strikes my fancy.

So, what's up with me? I love my grandma. She's 79 but easily looks ten years younger and is just the nicest women in the world, to everyone. I can honestly say without a doubt that she's enriched all the years of my life with her ever present existence.

But my grandma's a funny lady who, in a self absorbed way, looks down at her splayed hand while speaking to gaze fondly at her perfectly manicured finger nails and diamond rings. She even cocks her head to the side. Cracks me up! But of course I can't laugh out loud or point out to her that her behavior has long been a source of my amusement. That would be rude. My grandma is also a busy body and a horrendous gossip. One has to be careful when divulging pertinent information around her sharp ears because it will inevitably come back to bite you in the butt. Yet again, you can't accuse her of being a gossip. That would be rude. Still, her antics have never ceased being funny to me in a cute and harmless way. That's what my grandmother is: harmless. Most of the time anyway. You can't be a gossip monger without receiving negative attention at some juncture in your life.

On Sunday, I went to brunch with my mom and grandma. Three generations sipping champagne and nattering away like three busy honey bees when I noticed something that does irritate me about my grandma. Something that I can't dismiss as a quirky trait. My grandma has the worst listening skills. I don't know if it's her old age and her thinking that she only has so much more time left to say everything she wants and needs to say or what but the woman can go on about nothing for hours and not let you get a word or thought in edge wise! Well, I take that back. You can speak but she won't hear you. She'll look at you like she's listening but I can see this glazed look in her eyes and once I've stopped speaking, she'll pick up where she left off. It's like the whole time I was talking, she was deciding on her next words! After two hours, I gave up and just let her go on while I provided the necessary movements and sounds to allow her to continue. I love my grandma. She's got a great heart but she's getting to be rather feisty, a bit selfish, and becoming a terrible listener in her old age!

Weekend Movie Review! Whew! I'm almost thinking that with the amount of movies I watch in a weekend, I could give this portion of What's Up Wednesday its own weekly segment! I will ponder this...

First, "The Fighter". I've been wanting to see this movie since the moment I saw its previews. Mark Wahlberg is a long time favorite actor of mine. He always manages to play these really good guys. Wait, there was that one movie with Reese Witherspoon when he actually played a rather frightening and crazy guy..so I'll amend my statement to say that the majority of the time, Mark Wahlberg plays a nice guy. Plus, the man just makes good movies. Period. Add Amy Adams and Christian Bale to the mix and I am so sold! This movie was great. Funny, heart wrenching and dramatic, every scene steals the show. This is a serious look into the lives of white trash, people, and it rocks! The language is off the charts crass and there's drug use aplenty so be careful watching this around the kidlets. "The Fighter", based on a true story, follows the boxing life of Micky Ward and his famous brother whose a crack addict and Micky's trainer. This movie is fantastic. Even if you're not a boxing fan, which I'm not, this movie still rocks. The hubs is likely to enjoy this flick too which is good for us ladies who delight in watching Mark Wahlberg half naked for two hours. Yowzaa!!

"Hereafter". I read that this movie was recently banned in Japan because of the disturbing and realistic scene portraying the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The scene really is painful to watch especially after recent world events so brace yourself early in the movie for the traumatic experience. Directed by the legendary Clint Eastwood, "Hereafter" features three very different people in very different places in the world as they learn to cope with death. Matt Damon plays a psychic that can commune with the dead but this gift, or curse depending on how you see it, has very painful affects. In addition to Damon, there's a French woman who survives the Indian Ocean tsunami but now thinks that she may have died during the event but was brought back to life by two helpful Thailand survivors. And finally, an English boy copes with the loss of his twin brother. "Hereafter" is a long, depressing and simply put: a really bad movie. There were some good parts but the majority of the movie is absolute torture to sit through.

It's romantic comedy time! "The Switch" with Jason Bateman and Jennifer Aniston is your typical, run of the mill romantic comedy. The best part: the kid. He was so freaking cute!! He made the movie in my opinion. Aniston is a modern woman who hasn't found love but wants to proceed to the next step in life and have a child. Much to her chagrin, Aniston's best friend, Bateman, isn't too thrilled with the idea. At Aniston's insemination party (such a cool idea, btw), a disgruntled and drunk Bateman switches the donor's sperm with his own. While a cute comedy, Bateman isn't romantic comedy hero material, imo. Plus, there was absolutely NO chemistry between Bateman and Aniston. Kid is cute though. That's about it.

And finally, I actually left my hub's mancave for the movie theater. My parents and I saw "Rango", the Johnny Depp animated movie. I've discovered something with this movie outing. One, going to the movies is so not the thrilling experience it once was when I was a teenager. Two, only go to the movies when the movie in question is a must see. And finally, three, don't bother with animated flicks that aren't Pixar or DreamWorks productions. "Rango" was terrible. I've never been more bored in my life and I was actually ecstatic when I had to make what became, a rather lengthy sojourn to the bathroom. This movie is bound to make the kidlets have nightmares because the characters are that disgusting and that frighteningly ugly! The story was crazy, too involved, and looooooong.

What's new in romance!

Review: SASHA'S CALLING by T.C. Archer

Review: SASHA'S CALLING by T.C. Archer

Summery from LooseId: Nothing can stop freelance thief Sasha Smirnov from saving her planet -- except, Dirk, the gorgeous ambassador with polychrome eyes. Is it lust or designer pheromones? He is hot, too hot to resist -- or forget. A single, sizzling kiss burns him into her memory, and her body, but she can't afford to stop for passion, let alone love.

Sasha needs to get as far away from Dirk as possible and take the classified data she stole with her. So she stows away on a ship outward bound, only to discover Dirk's the pilot. Now she can't get away from him, or the system, but he will let her into his bed...

Publisher's Note: This book contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations that some readers may find objectionable: Public sex.
Publisher: LooseId, October 2010

Genre: Erotic Fantasy Romance

Single Title/Series: SASHA'S CALLING is a single title novella.

Cover Thoughts: The cover is appealing and adequately conveys the book's genre.

Origin: I received a copy for review from the author.

My Review:

Sasha Smirnov is on a stealth mission on the planet Centor when she stumbles across the technology that'll save her own planet, more importantly her ailing father. Working as a freelance thief, Sasha is bank rolling her entire operation and is just shy of broke without the datachip she's been contracted to steal but the warp-field generator in the bowls of Centor has the potential to save millions of lives and Sasha will do whatever it takes to get the generator plans to Magnus 3, her home plant that's about to be consumed by its super nova sun. Her escape plans are are going well too. She's even managed to steal a mind blowing kiss from an gorgeous Ambassador before stowing away on a outbound ship. Unfortunately for Sasha, this is when all her plans go to hell.

No sooner does Sasha become comfortably ensconced in her stow away position when a green floor to ceiling electronic scan passes through her person and the room she's hiding in. Thankful that scan didn't kill her as some have been rumored to do, Sasha feels a moment of relief before her sexy Ambassador strolls into her hiding place. Busted. And come to find out, that green scan wiped all her data memory including the warp-field generator! But Sasha has a plan, one that includes getting some play time with the hunky Ambassador before she'll commandeer his ship, return to Centor and re-retrieve the data. Sadly, Sasha's plans fall apart again, but this time not only does she face the real risk of losing her heart, but she faces an even more dire risk of being unable to save her father and Magnus 3.

The Heroine:

Brave, resourceful, and fearless, Sasha may be a thief but her heart is always in the right place. And while she does possess the cunning skill and "I work alone" attitude her profession demands, Sasha's actually quite vulnerable and trusting. Having never been befuddled by an all consuming lust, she crumbles sensually beneath her Ambassador's touch, a.k.a. Dr. Dirk Roscoepilot. Garnering her wary trust, Sasha is rocked with pain when he betrays her to the Pinkertons, galactic cowboy police. But her body still can't resist nor can it cease craving his touch and when he saves her yet again and despite still being confused by his intentions, Sasha will risk betrayal and more just to be in Dirk's arms one last time.

The Hero:

Dr. Dirk Roscoepilot is a mystery throughout the read. Matching Sasha in bravery and resourcefulness, he surprises her with his espionage skills but is open with his lust. Together, the two passionately ignite upon the pages but his overall intentions are never clear until the very end. A man who doesn't enjoy relinquishing control, his intelligence allows him to be the one moving the chess pieces of his and Sasha's relationship. Despite all the hoops his secretiveness forces Sasha to jump through, the reader never lets go of hope that at heart, Dirk's a good guy.

My Final Thoughts:

Told in third person narrative from Sasha's point of view, SASHA'S CALLING is a fast-paced, erotic thrill ride. Galactic espionage abounds with high-tech fantasy weaponry and detailed space mobility, painting a lush picture in the reader's mind's eye. The detail never overloads the plot but heightens it giving just enough filler for this action-packed novella. In addition, the combined vulnerabilities and warrior-like qualities of Sasha make for a fun journey. Finally, there are a few elements of the ridiculous that either require a more open minded reader or the ability to roll things off your back for the sake of entertainment, but in all, this is a fun read that'll make an hour feel like a minute. Enjoy!

Hey everyone! Please welcome Paranormal Romance author, Molly Harper, to Lovin' Me Some Romance!

About the Author:

Once a reporter and humor columnist, Molly Harper is now known for her snarky humor, feisty heroines and hunky heroes. She lives in Kentucky with her family.

Graveyards

There’s a reason I have a character graveyard on my web site.

One of my weaknesses as a writer is that I occasionally create wacky, compelling characters that ultimately don't do anything but distract from the story. In every manuscript, I end up cutting at least one character and parceling out that character's better lines out to other characters. So to honor these fallen literary heroes, I established the Harper Character Memorial Garden at mollyharper.com.

Most of the residents are siblings to the main characters. Zeb from the Nice Girls vampire series once had a wacky, attention-hog sister named Maybelline who tried to destroy his wedding. Lacey from AND ONE LAST THING… had a sister, Ellie, but it turned out Emmett was funny enough by himself. And Maggie Graham, the main character of THE ART OF SEDUCING A NAKED WEREWOLF almost met the same fate.

Maggie is little sister to Cooper Graham, the leading man from the first Naked Werewolf book, HOW TO FLIRT WITH A NAKED WEREWOLF. Her relationship with Cooper is rocky in HOW TO FLIRT, and while writing the first draft, Maggie was even less reasonable toward him. (Believe it or not.) And their mother, Gracie, was on Maggie’s side, treating Cooper badly, too.

When my agent read it, she suggested that perhaps I was being a little too hard on Cooper. I considered cutting Maggie from the manuscript all together and leaving the harsh treatment to Gracie. I’m very glad I decided to simply dial soften Grace’s character to a sweet, loving mother, and designate Maggie as Cooper’s sole, dedicated tormentor – keeping Maggie safe from the graveyard. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have her own title.

Naked Werewolf Series
Book Two
THE ART OF SEDUCING A NAKED WEREWOLF follows Maggie’s transition to taking over Cooper’s Alpha position and her introduction to paranormal researcher Nick Thatcher. Nick comes to Grundy to investigate rumors of lycanthropic shenanigans in the area, and Maggie resolves to chase him away, even if doing so takes a quick bite on the butt. What a pity that Nick turns out to be so drool-worthy, and that his kisses make Maggie want to sit up and beg.

I’m glad I didn’t miss out on the experience of writing from Maggie’s perspective. I’d never written from the point of view of someone who was born a supernatural creature. Jane Jameson was made a vampire just before her 30th birthday. Mo, Cooper’s love interest in HOW TO FLIRT, is a human dropped into werewolf pack drama. Writing as someone who’s always been able to do something weird and extraordinary, was a whole new experience.

THE ART OF SEDUCING A NAKED WEREWOLF comes out on March 29. You can find it where ever book are sold. You can find the Harper Memorial Garden at http://www.mollyharper.com/. I hope you look up both!

The Evolution of a Paranormal Romance Author

How does a paranormal author switch entities without losing one’s mind, is the question I get a lot. I’m talking about jumping from vampires to werewolves to angels? Really? BIG SMILE. Well, let me explain…

You see, I started off writing paranormal stuff with my very first novel (Sundance – pubbed by Kensington/Arabesque), which got pegged in the romance section – because at that time, which was the mid-nineties, there was no such genre as “paranormal romance,” per se. So my having a hero and heroine share a past life fraught with evil and a curse and the bad guys who were hunting them in the present, just became a “suspense.” Then when I came with the second novel, Slow Burn, where the ghost of a woman’s dead sister haunted her into alcoholism until she could figure out that her sister was trying to tell her from beyond the grave that she was murdered… hey, they told me to start writing lighter fare and quit with the weird stuff, LOL. How did I know that the urban fantasy genre was truly in my bones, when there wasn’t even a category like that on the bookstore shelves at the time? Go figure.

Wanting to stay in print, I relented to the publisher’s requests (well, let’s be real, they were demands.) So for several years I went comic romance and had a ball… but still… the paranormal crept in (like in Love Potions, where a group of women in a beauty salon start doing fake love potions only to find out they work, LOL!) But it wasn’t until I went to a house that literally popped my choker chain and allowed me free reign to write what I wanted… and oooohhh… the joy! The Vampire Huntress Legends series was born.

It started out as one huge book—about 750 manuscript pages. Yep, I lost my mind. And the publisher wisely cut it into two books. However, the weird thing about how it was done, book one stopped on a cliffhanger at like midnight in the story and book two just picked up right from there (Minion and The Awakening.) So, yeah, on the first run of this bizarre market test I got a LOT of unhappy mail. People were like WTH, because they had to wait six months for the sequel to come out. THEN, because the pump had been primed, so to speak, to expect a book every six months, that meant I had to write very fast and very hard – and amazingly, because the storyline was so embedded in my psyche, I was able to keep that pace for twelve novels in one long epic story trajectory. From there, the natural extension of this was werewolves (or shadow wolves as the case may be—BIG SMILE!)

So, I already know what you’re thinking: how in the heck do you do a leap from that madness into angels? (Laughing… I know, I know, bear with me!)

You see, to me, I’m a research pack rat and world news junky. All the stuff I collected over the years about heaven and hell and demons and such, well, it was right there. Then you add the whole 2012 component and Mayan calendars and all the Armageddon fears… world news—massive earthquakes, spewing Icelandic volcanoes, tsunamis, the Middle East literally exploding like falling dominoes, domestic unrest in the heartland of America, now this whole Japan catastrophe—the likes of which the world has never witnessed… uh, yeah, I can see angels coming to earth in a storyline.

If you bundle it all together, I guess what I’m saying to you is this—whatever your particular bent is as a writer, it’s gonna come out no matter what. You can suppress it, hide it, reshape it, but in the end, if it’s your thing, it’s your thing. The ideal is to write what you love and find a publisher who loves what you write. It’s a marriage made in heaven (pardon the sappy pun) at Simon and Schuster/Pocket Books—because I’m able to open up my writer’s throttle and do angels in Surrender the Dark and its sequel, Conquer the Dark, with full support. And let’s face it, after a while we all get bored if we stay with the same type of story. I did a really fun vampire run… had a great time working with the wolves. Now, it’s time for a change and new challenge… hey, working with the Angel of Death has been a blast! LOL! I hope you enjoy Surrender the Dark.

THE FALLEN: RAZIEL by Kristina Douglas

The Fallen Series Book One

Kristina Douglas's sexy new series introduces a realm of fallen angels and ruthless demons, where an eternal rebellion is brewing . . . and one unsuspecting woman can change the fate of the Fallen forever.

She was just an ordinary mortal . . .

'You're dead' is so not what Allie Watson wants to hear. Unfortunately, it explains a lot. Like the dark, angelically handsome man who ferried her to this strange, hidden land. The last thing she remembers is stepping off a curb in front of a crosstown bus. Now she's surrounded by gorgeous fallen angels with an unsettling taste for blood - and they really don't want her around. Not exactly how she pictured heaven.

. . . until death catapulted her into a seductive world she never imagined.

Raziel is unsure why he rescued Allie from hellfire against Uriel's orders, but she stirs in him a longing he hasn't felt in centuries. Now the Fallen are bracing for the divine wrath brought by his disobedience, and they blame Allie for the ferocious Nephilim clawing at the kingdom's shrouded gates. Facing impossible odds at every turn, the two must work together to survive. Raziel will do anything to defend his spirited lover against the forces of darkness - because Allie may be the Fallen's only salvation.

What's Up Wednesday! (7)

What's Up Wednesday is a little weekly post that I'm hosting. Just something short and sweet about what's new with me, the romance realm and what ever else strikes my fancy.

So, what's up with me? After the recent and incredibly tragic events in Japan, I've come to the decision that Mr. VFG and I will no longer be lazy boneheads and that we'll get ourselves prepared for the natural disaster that's absolutely going to happen one day in San Diego. Seriously, there's no question of if but when.

There are various different fault lines that run throughout Southern California, I'm however boxed in between two currently quiet but potentially disastrous fault lines: Rose Canyon Fault Zone and Elsinore Fault Zone. Rose Canyon has been fingered for as long as I can remember as the site for "The Big One" here in SD. It's rumored that "The Big One" could make us San Diego East County residents beach front property owners. Oh yeah! But seriously, while the hubs and I are in some serious risk for some serious trembling, we've little risk of tsunami damage as we're too far inland but that's not to say that the city wouldn't be at risk. A tsunami in San Diego could have some very deadly effects. I shudder to think how bad it could be. But you know, living in earthquake country, you let these kind of threats roll off your back. A little shaking is nothing, we're used to it. But its this very cavalier attitude that prevents us from making an effort to be prepared. So this weekend, we're getting prepared!! Which reminds me, I need to look up some sites online that have some good checklists....any suggestions?

Weekend Movie Review! "Megamind" was sadly a mega disappointment. Let me start first by saying that I'm an animated movie fanatic!! I love them. The stories are always good and the films themselves are just so beautiful and truly a feast for the eyes. You do run into the occasional bad seed and that's "Megamind". Of course the picture is stunning and I did sincerely enjoy the movie's message but I thought it all to be just too involved. Megamind, voiced by Will Farrell, is an alien bad guy that finally dispatches the heroic Metroman (Brad Pitt) and assumes control of Metrocity. But no sooner does he do this when Megamind starts missing his heroic counterpart and the challenge of facing his rival foe. This prompts Megamind to have a bit of an identity crisis as well as a developing infatuation with his all time favorite hostage, news reporter Roxanne (Tina Fey). Things get dicey though when an experiment goes wrong and Megamind is forced to actually save the day. Like I said, the message was good but with a viewing time of over an hour and a half, I got bored. This makes me think that kids got bored as well...

What's new in romance? Ugh, I suck. I've got nothing right now. My website hopping has not been up to par as of late. Anybody got some good romance gossip out there??

So what's new with you?
