MISTS OF VELVET by Sophie Renwick

Hidden from mortals for all eternity, Annwyn, the Otherworld, is home to shapeshifters, wraiths and dragons. But in a nightclub called Velvet Haven, desire brings humans and immortals together…

As the owner of Velvet Haven—and the mortal great-grandson of a Sidhe prince banished from Annwyn—Rhys MacDonald spends his time mingling with both mortals and immortals. But when his ancient homeland is threatened by a dangerous Dark Magick, he races to Annwyn to offer his help—even though mortals are forbidden in the Otherworld.

It’s in Annwyn that a young goddess and shapeshifter named Bronwnn finds Rhys—attacked and left for dead. Nursing him back to health, Bronwnn knows he’s the man who’s been appearing in her dreams—and that their fates are deeply intertwined. But even as they’re bound together by the flames of desire, they may discover that destiny—and the Dark Magick—has other plans for them…

Hi guys! Please join me in welcoming Erotic Paranormal Romance author, Sophie Renwick, to Lovin' Me Some Romance!

Guest Post:

Writing the Immortals of Annwyn series has been really, really rewarding--and trying! With a huge overarching plot, and relics, and a whole list of characters--plus a couple of bad guys, there is a lot to keep track of.

One thing that is easy to write though are the guys. For some strange reason, men are easy for me to write. I have no idea why. It’s just the way it is. Each character is so distinct in my mind. I can hear them, see them, and they all feel unique and individual for me.

So, when it came time for me to write about Rhys MacDonald, the mortal great grandson of Dagan (A Highlander Christmas) and great nephew of Bran the Fey king of Annwyn (Velvet Haven) I knew I’d be writing not only one man, but two.

You see, Rhys is a mortal, through and through. He has ZERO special powers and he’s really pissed by that. He’s also cursed if he decides to step foot in Annwyn. To protect him, and the fist born males of each MacDonald line, a special spell has been cast over each male--a Shadow Wraith protector, or a Bocan, in Gaelic.

Each male of Rhys’s line has had one. But there’s a problem with his Bocan. He’s a male. All the wraiths before have been female.

I have NO idea why my brain did this. But Keir, Rhys's protector came to me as a full blooded male. And I liked it. The dynamics of it. The relationship. The underlying sexual tension that may or may not exist between them.
The Immortals of Annwyn: Book 3
Sayer's Book

When I sat down to write Mists of Velvet, I knew that a large portion of Rhys’s story would involve Keir. How could it not? But what I didn’t expect was the deep emotional connection between them. It goes beyond friendship and duty. I was kind of scared of that. Were they lovers? Hmmm, I didn’t want that. I’m not against it, but I just knew that they weren’t that way. But, they did need each other and I knew that they shared…things. Rhys needs Keir’s protection, and Keir lives by feeding off Rhys’s emotions.

So, I began thinking, and thinking, and then finally I just stopped thinking about it, and began writing, and what transpired was a really powerful relationship between the two. It really drew me in, and then I got courageous and allowed myself to write THE scene that kept screaming to be written.

I don’t read any male male stuff, but I have to admit, this one scene really had me rethinking this…

So, my question is, what is it about two hot blooded hunky men, sharing physical intimacy that gets confirmed heterosexual women all hot and bothered?

VFG's Answer: There's just something about two brawny, sexy, gorgeous hetersexual males engaging in sexual activity that gives me the thrills and chills. I picture the rubbing of muscled arms, sleek bellies and black tribal art. The sensual scruff of two firmly masculine jaws and soft lips crushing each other for dominance. It's the fact that they know what gets each other off in the most primal, the most base of ways that perhaps women will just never fully grasp purely because of what makes us women. Most of all, it's the tantilizing feel of the forbidden, that these are two males that are completely heterosexual touching each other for reasons that trancend human logic. Love it.

Genre: Erotic Paranormal Romance

Single Title/Series: MISTS OF VELVET is Book Two in The Immortals of Annwyn Series and it's absolutely imperative that you read this series in order.

Cover Thoughts: I'm in love with this cover and the more I look the more heavily I fall. I'm especially enamored with the lush detail pulled directly from the book. It's obvious that the NAL art department considered and applied much of the plot to the creation of this beautiful cover.

Why I Read It: I received an Advanced Review Copy from the author.

My Review:

The Plot:

Rhys MacDonald is a mere mortal amongst a cache of extremely powerful immortals. Treated with disdain by most and as a nuisance by everyone else, Rhys is tired of being handled with kid gloves. Mostly he's pissed about being left out of the fight against the seeping evil that's spreading its oily tentacles into not only the otherworld of Annwyn but within the mortal realm as well. To top off Rhys's growing aggravation is the sudden and perplexing distance his Shadow Wraith has slammed between them.

As the cursed great-grandson of Daegan, once co-ruler of Annwyn who fell in love with a mortal and earned the eternal wrath of the Supreme Goddess, Rhys, like every son born before him is protected by a Shadow Wraith. There's only one hiccup, Rhys's protector is male while all of his forefathers have had females. Sharing what's for them a bond as natural as breathing, the immortals of Annwyn are disgusted by what Rhys and Keir, his Shadow Wraith, share. An almost symbiotic relationship, Rhys needs Keir's protection as Keir needs to "feed" from Rhys's emotional energy, sexual energy more specifically, to survive. Their connection transcends that of lovers or brothers. It has no definition. It just is and its integral to their way of life but right now its breaking. For once this mortal and immortal pairing are being torn in two different directions, fated to be separated.

However, there is light within the darkness that Rhys finds himself. Rhys dreams of a woman. A woman that he would never share with Keir. She's a being that embodies the alluring combination of both innocence and worldliness and her presence means something vital. Dreams are incredibly significant in Annwyn and highly respected as fated truth. To dream of another in the erotic and soul defying ways that Rhys dreams can only mean one thing: Rhys's luscious dream woman is his mate.

Bronwnn, Goddess and handmaiden to Cailleach the Supreme Goddess and co-ruler of Annwyn, is caught in a tumultuous restlessness as her body awakens with sexual maturity. Yet she senses that more than her own body is awakening, Annwyn stirs as the Dark Mage gets closer and closer to seizing the power to take over the mortal realm and Annwyn herself. Fearing that her gift of sight will chain her forever to Cailleach's side, forever denied the pleasure of touch as she desires, Bronwnn indulges in the dreams of the dark haired man that makes her body come alive as its never been. And when that man falls in a bloody heap at the feet of her wolf, she doesn't think twice about saving her mate.

Having decided to take matters into his own hands and prove that he has what it takes to be apart of the nine warriors his Sidhe uncle and King of Annwyn seeks to defeat the Dark Mage, Rhys breaks into Annwyn despite his being told not to and worse, despite the fact that his great-grandfather's curse makes him prime prey for the Supreme Goddess to kill. But he soon falls not into the hands of the Supreme Goddess but the Dark Mage when it's discovered that his cave of evil lies beneath Rhys's mortal club, Velvet Haven. Chained and carved, Rhys escapes before the Dark Mage can claim his soul. Death still seems imminent though with his life's blood seeping out but when a wolf and a snake lead him to safety, his trust is rewarded as his mate awaits.

Ensconced in a cabin deep within Annwyn, Rhys and Bronwnn delve into the passion that their dreams started, claiming one another's souls. However, Happily Ever After doesn't come that easy for this pair. When a soul-shattering connection between Bronwnn and the Dark Mage is revealed and Rhys's trespassing within Annwyn is discovered, sacrifices will be made that threaten to tear apart the fragile bloom of the love they share.

The Heroine:

Terribly lonely and isolated, Bronwnn longs for love but her ability to have visions chains her to the side of Cailleach, the Supreme Goddess and co-ruler with King Bran of Annwyn. Never understanding why she's been isolated from the other Goddess's of Caillieach's court, Bronwnn has valid fears of forever remaining in chaste service for Bronwnn shares an awful but integral connection to the Dark Mage and the truth of that connection is earth-shattering. The only solace Bronwnn feels is when she can finally fall within the arms of her mate but even that comes with a host of difficulties. The revealing of Rhys's mortality is startling as well as the fact that he's the descendant of Daegan and on Cailleach's Kill List. Incredibly brave and determined, Bronwnn risks everything even her very life's happiness to save the mortal man she's given her heart to.

The Hero:

Rhys's early anger and frustration is palpable as well as his later determination to protect his mate and claim her as his forever. Embodying a heroic fearlessness, Rhys will utilize all he has to help his immortal brethren defeat the Dark Mage even if that help is unwanted. Completely mortal with no power, it's this very courage that propels him into the fight he long desires to be a part of.

In addition, Rhys's fierce love for Bronwnn is quite a ride. He's a man that knew he was always destined to grasp something from Annwyn and when his mate is presented, he grabs hold of her with both hands that become unshakable. And while Rhys's mortality is frustrating, he never treats it as liability feeling always that he has something of value to contribute just as the immortals around him do.

My Final Thoughts:

A dark and thrilling read, MISTS OF VELVET unveils more than one eye-popping secret. Picking up short weeks after VELVET HAVEN ended, the prophecy takes on a whole new personal turn for our friends, the Immortals of Annwyn. Told with lyrical prose and a haunting portrayal of this mystical otherworld of Annwyn, Renwick is as fearless as her characters and she shows little mercy to each of their destines.

While this review focused upon Rhys and Bronwnn, MoV embodies many other character threads with the most important being that of Rhys's Shadow Wraith, Keir. With an ending as heartbreaking as it is beautiful, this vibrant immortal's tale is steeped in darkness that will surely leave readers such as I clamoring for more. Then there's a naughty fallen angel that dances the line between good and evil with a jester's practice. These are multi-layered characters with their story being told upon multi-layered plots with a deft hand.

Remarkably, Renwick manages to blend a lovely balance between the naked eroticism and plot of MISTS OF VELVET. Bold and blunt, the erotic core of this novel is never lost amongst the complex plot arcs showing that Renwick can deliver on both accounts in spades.

Not to be read as a stand alone, MISTS OF VELVET demands that you read its predecessor. These are magical tales that can easily appease Paranormal Romance readers craving complex world building with a decidedly erotic edge for those readers wanting passion in abundance. Enjoy!

Each day we'll learn about one of Charlotte's 7 Unseelie Fey Princes, their sins and their virtue counterparts along with an awesome daily giveaway of LUST!!!

Now, allow me to introduce you to scrumptious Lust:

Name: Thane, half brother to the Unseelie King and older twin of Kian

Sin: Lust

Eye Color: piercing blue

Hair Color: long, black

Build: lithe

Power: come in the form of mist

Personality: Sexually intense

I am Thane, the Fey prince of Lust. Sex and pleasure are my compulsions. Never has there been a female--mortal or Fey who has been able to resist me. My sin, along with my Dark Fey beauty makes me irresistible to others.

Out of all the sins, I have always believed that this one was the most tolerable. Pleasure is pleasure and I have indulged in it through my long life. It never was difficult to bear until I learned that my life was to be entwined with one women--a paragon at that. The virtue of Chastity.

Chastity Lennox is beautiful, her body belying anything chaste. My sin and my Fey blood want her--but she will not have me. She is the first woman to rebuff me, and I left hungering. Unsatisfied.

Lust is a persistent voice in my head. My sin wants me to take her, to carry her to my court as though she were Persephone and me Hades. Even my Fey blood yearns for the same thing. But I cannot. Sex is not love. Pleasure is not devotion.

I must woo her. Charm her. Become her. But how? How do I tempt the most desirable--and virtuous woman I have ever met. By becoming the very thing she cannot resist….

But I am not the only man to want her. The seelies are after her, too. And their glittering brightness, and goodness beckons Chastity virtuous side. But in the dark cover of night I come to her, eveloping her in a heady seduction that she cannot resist. Our bodies are one, our thoughts, too. Soon our needs are one, and Chastity slowly yields her body and soul to me.

But Crom, my adversary will do anything to prevent us being together. He uses the one weapon he has to defeat me. My sin.

For what chaste woman would fall in love with a creature consumed by Lust? What woman would give up the chance to live in a gilded court, in order to come the sensually decadent world of the Dark Fey?

Time is running out. I must make Chastity believe that I am more than a lusting brute. I must make her yearn for the Dark Fey she has given her body to.

Now, allow me to introduce you to gorgeous Vanity:

Name: Rinion, cousin to the Unseelie King

Sin: Vanity

Eye Color: sky blue

Hair Color: dark brown

Build: Perfection

Special Power: I’m not telling

Personality: A bit conceited

I am Rinion, Fey prince of Vanity, and the most beautiful of all Fey--both Unseelie and Seelie. Vanity is my sin, and it causes me to be vain about all things beautiful--including the women I take to my bed.

Had I not been cursed with Vanity, I would still have had a certain measure of pride, for all Dark Fey do. My sin has only enhanced what is naturally inherent in the Dark Fey--sensuality, a deep, mysterious beauty, and a sexual prowess that steals one’s breath and soul.

Naturally, my mate must match me in all things, but most especially beauty. As an expert in everything lovely, I could not countenance anything less then perfection. That is why, immediately upon learning that the Lennox girls were virtues, I set about securing the hand of the first daughter--Mary. The most lovely of the four. Her body beckons me. The fire in her eyes arouse me. And her beauty--it is a match for mine. My sin purrs in satisfaction whenever I gaze upon her. She is perfection.

Secured that she will be mine, I am relieved that if I must take a wife, then it shall be Mary. A woman deserving of me.

But there is trickery afloat. And what I know is that I have deceived. For my wife is not who I believe it to be. My wife is….the virtue of Humility. Which Mary is most certainly not.

If my court is to survive, I must bring this….creature to my court. I must take her to wife. But a Fey is full of trickery and I am quite certain that I shall have the woman I want. There is still a way for me to ravish Mary, while staying true to my people.

It is a sound plan that I have deviously thought up. Now if only Vanity would cease ruminating on how very erotic it would be to have Humility, humbling herself before me….

The darkness shows me what sort of monster I am…and just how beautiful Humility can be, to a prideful, vain Fey who has lost his way.

My story will release in early 2012. A true, erotic fairy tale if I’ve ever heard one! It involves a book, a spell, and the courage of one woman to stand up to and be who she is, against the pride of a very vainglorious faery.

Name: Kian, half brother to the Unseelie King, and twin of Thane, fey prince who harbors the sin Lust

Sin: Envy

Eye Color: Turquoise--but grow emerald green when jealous

Hair Color: Black and silky. Sometimes I wear it long, sometimes short. Depends on my mood.

Build: Like my brother. Lithe

Power: Shadow

Personality: Dark. Brooding. Volatile moods.

I am Kian, the fey prince cursed with the sin of Envy. My twin harbors Lust. You can imagine what it is like for me--to feel this envious sin growing within me each day. I am jealous of everything, and the pain of coveting everything everyone has is eating away at my soul. As a consequence, I isolate myself. I am alone at the court of my people, unable to bear to see anyone happy, most especially my twin.

My moods are dark and brooding, making my thoughts dangerous. I am not fit for the arms of women. I fear my sin. The pain it causes others. I fear I cannot be satisfied with anything, most especially my virtue.

Kindness. What is a man who is possessed by the sin of envy to do with a gentle and sweet woman such as Mercy Lennox? Break her heart, and destroy her soul. That is what. I am not fit to bring her to my court. I doubt I could return her kindness. But then my people would suffer from weakness and fear, and I cannot allow that.

I have resolved to find a way to bring her to the court, and ensure her happiness--but not with me. I am the last Fey who could do so. But her kindness is my undoing, and my sin hates that I am weakening. My sin wants to break her, and show her no mercy at all. I lie awake at nights wondering what it would be like to take her--to show her absolutely no mercy at all--to whisper her name and make her beg for more of my touch.

But I know that it is wrong. Such fantasies can only lead to dark doings. To dark, and terrible deeds. Her surrender, and the beauty of her kneeling before me, begging for mercy would be tainted black by my sin--a sin who will never, ever be satisfied.

The kindest thing I could do for Mercy Lennox is to let her go free, but Envy cannot countenance that. My sin would do all in it’s power to have her, no matter the cost. My sin has enveloped me.

Leaving me an empty shell, and the furthest thing from kind.

I am Envy, and my Mercy will be destroyed by the cloying vines of jealousy.

Build: Tall, muscular, bulky with big arms and shoulders. I’m part Elve, and that makes me big and strong and damn dangerous when I want to be. I am feared at court because of my Elvish blood, and because my mother mated with a Fey, I have been banished from the Elven Court. I’m only tolerated by the Unseelie’s because Niall treats me like a brother, and has basically demanded they accept me.

Personality: Tortured. That’s all I can say. To the very core.

I am Irian. A Fey prince, born of an Unseelie prince, and an Elven mother. I belong nowhere, and that suits me. It’s made all the more bearable by my sin--Sloth. The bastard just wishes me to rot away, he’s sapped me of will to live, and the power that once infused my body. He wants my soul, and I might just give him what he wants.

I lie abed all day, unable to move--no will--no hope. My human female lover has left me--died giving birth to my son. A son I cannot look at it, or take any interest in. It is a sign of hope for the Unseelies, that a child has been born--a child has not been born and survived since the devastating curse that Queen Aine placed upon our court. But I cannot see him as a savior. I see only pain. I see only death. I feel only a hollow beating in my chest--one that can never, ever be replaced.

Fool that I am, I fell in love with my mortal, knowing she did not return my love. I offered her my heart and soul, and she took it with her when she died in my arms. I am left with nothing now--only Sloth.

Niall wishes for me to fight the sin--to muster up any strength and inner will to search for my virtue. Diligence. I have no interest in women. No thought to ever give my heart again--especially to a mortal women--especially a virtuous one.

If Niall wishes to end the curse, then he must find this paragon of virtue and bring her to me. For I will never lift another finger in the hopes of finding love.

Love brings misery. Love brings death.

The others have left court, searching for their virtues, while I wither, locked away in my room, waiting for my sin to consume me.

Sloth speaks to me, and in the dark, I answer…take me…

Welcome to LMSR's *Seven Days of Fey* -  a week long event celebrating Erotic Historical Romance author Charlotte Featherstone and her new release LUST, Book One in the Sins and Virtues Series for HQN Spice!

Each day we'll learn about one of Charlotte's 7 Unseelie Fey Princes, their sins and their virtue counterparts along with an awesome daily giveaway of LUST!!!

Now, allow me to introduce you to Avarice:

Name: Maeron, half brother of Irian and cousin to the King (I’m not part Elve like Irian, but I wish to hell I was, those damn Elves have riches you couldn’t believe, and my sin sings every time I think of the land the Elves live in, and what they’re hiding beneath those caves….)

Sin: Avarice

Eye Color: hazel

Hair Color: Dark brown, nearly black

Build: Tall and lean, but don’t let that fool you, I’m lethal when I want something and something is in the way.

Personality: Mysterious. I mix in with the mortals--it’s part of my sin. They think I’m mysterious, I’m just trying to fit in. Avarice is my sin, and I hunger for riches and material items. Land, jewels, anything. Avery is my direct competition within the Unseelie Court. I am always competing with him, as a result, my appetite is insatiable.

I am Maeron, a Dark Fey prince who harbors within me the sin of Avarice. It’s been so long since I completely embraced my sin that I no longer think of it as a sin, but motivation to be the best, the richest, the most powerful. The same ambition that the humans aspire to. What is wrong with that?

I spend most of my time in the mortal realm, looking to feed my sin. The Unseelie Court is already abundantly rich. It is the mortal realm that is the challenge for me now. There, there is untapped riches.

Beneath my sin, I am a Dark Fey, with the need to feed the pleasures, and the dark needs which consume the Unseelie Fey. It is in the mortal realm where I also feed those needs.

I never have difficulty finding lovers, and never have difficulty leaving them after. After all, ‘ more’ is my motto.

Niall, my king, has summoned me back to court. I can only imagine what for. I have heard that we are to search for virtues. Who wants a virtuous woman? It goes against everything my sin stands for, and everything a Dark Fey desires.

For now, I will ignore the summons and risk my king’s wrath. For there is a property I desire. By the water. It’s open and spacious, and I want it for when I come ’ up top’ to live. But there is one thing preventing me from having it. A woman named Charity.

Damn her, she owns it, and she’s opened a home for ’ fallen women’ of all damned things. She will not hear of selling it, and nothing, not even bribery, or threats can dissuade her from her course.

No, Niall can wait. Charity, well, Charity must be made to relent. To break. To give me what I want.

As I lower my pen, I am struck by a horrid thought. Is Charity not one of the seven holy virtues……

Each day we'll learn about one of Charlotte's 7 Unseelie Fey Princes, their sins and their virtue counterparts along with an awesome daily giveaway of LUST!!!

Now, allow me to introduce you to Gluttony:

Name: Avery, bastard brother of the Unseelie King

Sin: Gluttonny

Eye color: Black rimmed in violet

Hair: Black curls

Build: Big bones and muscles. I’ve been described as ‘overwhelming’, and I like that description! I am the tallest of the Fey, and I enjoy towering over those who would attempt to stand up to me.

I can come in the form of fog, and I like to, it’s dark and oppressive, all encompassing. The fog hordes and consumes, and my sin purrs in pleasure as I envelop what we desire with my Fey magic.

Personality: Hedonist. Totally.

I am Avery, a Fey prince, and the harbinger of Gluttony. What I see I take. And I want everything.

I’m a true hedonist, and my sin is always crying for more, more, more. It’s never satisfied, and never more so then in the art of pleasure.

Combined with my Dark Fey needs, Gluttony overtakes me. I live for pleasure--from food and drink, sex and women, pleasure and pain. Heathen. Glutton, I am both those things.

Unlike my ‘brothers’ I am not destroyed by my sin. I revel in it. I embrace it. I have never felt dirty or ashamed of what I am, until one night, when a prim, tight lipped spinster stood before, repulsed by me.

Prudence Lennox. The virtue of Temperance and Restraint. She is to be mine--but she does not want me, and I am beginning to believe that I do not want anything to do with her.

But I must. She is my virtue. One of the women prophesized could end our curse and the suffering of our court. I must try. And late at night, when I close my eyes, I see Prudence, with her stiff posture, and disapproving scowl, and wonder what it would be like to strip her of her restraint. To tempt her into all kinds of wicked pleasure. I want to see her come undone, and that pinched mouth welcome my kisses. I want to come to her as fog, and envelop her, steal her willpower, and drag her away to my dark court, where she might discover the wicked pleasures of a sinful dark Fey.

Gluttony is purring now. He’s urging me on, chanting to me….take, overpower…consume….

That is what I will do when next I see Prudence Lennox. I will consume her with my hands, my mouth, my body--and I will tempt her, like she has never been tempted before.

Each day we'll learn about one of Charlotte's 7 Unseelie Fey Princes, their sins and their virtue counterparts along with an awesome daily giveaway of LUST!!!

Now, allow me to introduce you to sinful Wrath:

Name: Niall, King of the Unseelie Fey

Sin: Wrath

Eye Color: Dark, almost black

Hair Color: Dark brown, with gold highlights, (a reminder that there is Seelie in my blood)

Build: Tall, broad shoulder. Lean. Fey markings on my arms and chest that designate me as ruler of my people.

Power: The usual Dark Fey magic as well, I can come in the form of fire.

Personality: Full of anger and rage, I struggle to keep my sin at bay. Not an easy task for a king who’s court is cursed and dying. Loyal to the core, I’m determined to save his court, and the other six princes who are also saddled with sins. As king, I hold myself apart from the others. I don’t know why, only that I am different from them--more solitary, more isolated. But this has never bothered me…until Thane brought his human mate to our court…

I am Niall, King of the Unseelies--I am the most powerful Fey of all, yet despite my powers, my court is dying, and I cannot stop it.

We Dark Fey are cursed, but six of my kin and myself have even more of a burden then other Unseelie Fey. We are cursed with the seven cardinal sins. My sin to bear is Wrath--and since I have been left to save my dying court, which my Seelie mother cursed, my sin has been unleashed, and I have destroyed much during my quest for a way to break the magic that binds my people.

Searching in vain for a way to end the curse, Wrath has made it all but impossible for me concentrate. I seek only to destroy--everything--including my mother and twin, and their thriving court. Up top in the mortal world, I have been responsible for razing entire villages in search of answers--and the women my court need.

I have become the monster that wrath wishes me to be. I am a merciless, cold blooded Fey with dark passions, dark pleasures, and the sin that commits dark and terrible deeds.

I have finally come up with something, though. A way to release my court of the spell. Myself, and the other six princes of my court must find our opposing virtues--sacred females born in the mortal realm, and bring them back to our court. But they cannot be coerced, nor can faery magic be used to keep them there. They must come of their own free will. But how will that happen? How can my virtue ever come willingly, when it was me who razed her village?

My virtue is Hope, and now I put all of mine in her. For my court will not survive if she can only see the sin in me, and not the Fey.

Review: KISS AT YOUR OWN RISK by Stephanie Rowe

Review: KISS AT YOUR OWN RISK by Stephanie Rowe

Trinity Harpswell is a cursed Black Widow-death and mayhem are all part of the job description. If she can manage to go just one more week without accidentally killing someone, she'll break this killer curse and put her Black Widow days behind her.

When sexy Blaine Underhill III shows up at her door and asks for her help rescuing his friend from the clutches of Death's evil grandma, Trinity gets pulled into a daring high stakes adventure. As Blaine and Trinity join forces to take down a series of underworld assassins, they may just learn that love is the deadliest game of all.
Publisher: Sourcebooks, January 2011

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Single Title/Series: KISS AT YOUR OWN RISK is Book One in the Soulfire Series.

Cover Thoughts: Love it! The fiery blaze is super eye catching as well as the quote from J.R. Ward. *wink* And I like the tag line "Should she kiss him... Or kill him?"

Why I Read It: I received an Advanced Review Copy from the Publisher.

My Review:

The Plot:

KISS AT YOUR OWN RISK boasts a convoluted and topsy-turvey plot making for one hell of a thrill ride. Trinity Harpswell is in quite the predicament. Just a few short days remain before she'll beat her killing Black Widow curse and resume the normal life she's always wanted. Of course nothing can be easy and Trinity soon finds herself contracted to kill not one but two people or her beloved father dies. Having had the two most understanding parents in the world, what with having to relocate during the course of her life after four unplanned murders, there's no way that Trinity is letting her father die at her expense and she'll gladly loose her soul to the Black Widow to save him.

You see, Trinity is not a bad person. She wants to fall in love, get married and have babies one day but her blasted curse always manages to get in the way. Once Trinity looses her heart to a man, she can't stop her curse from unveiling the perfect way to kill him and then following through with sickening glee. For the last five years she's done her best to look totally unappealing to the opposite sex, dating only the most disgusting of men to have some kind social life in the interim as she waits for the clock to tick down to the final moment. If she makes it five whole years without killing, the curse is broken. And her plan has been a success thus far but Trinity soon becomes number one on the Otherworlder's Most Wanted List and talk of being between a rock and a hard place is a universal understatement.

Blaine Underhill is in desperate need of a Black Widow and Trinity Harpswell is on his list as the most powerful and better yet, the closest. After he and his team of warriors escaped a centuries long imprisonment, they were forced to leave a good man behind but Blaine has every intention of rescuing his friend and killing the black witch that gleefully tortured them. Problem is, Angelica is one seriously whacked out bitch of witch and so far she's proved to be impervious to all murder attempts hence Blaine's need for Trinity. Her Black Widow will show them how the witch can be killed and he has plans of making very good use of Trinity's curse.

As lusciously hot as Blaine might be, Trinity doesn't find it all too hard to resist the bad ass warrior. The man wants to selfishly use her and then kill her! Yup, no heart-stopping, Black Window inducing attractive qualities there but Blaine's her only chance at potentially saving her father without having to succumb to her spider. Taking whatever boon she can get, Trinity agrees to help Blaine kill Angelica if he helps her save her father in return. Now it's just a waiting game to see who will renege first....

The Heroine:

Despite the fact that the girl has murdered four men, Trinity is immediately endearing. She doesn't want to kill and being stuck with her Black Widow curse has been nothing short of a nightmare. Imagine murdering the man you love the moment you realize you're in love? It helps that the reader is immediately introduced to a small but important group of people that care deeply for Trinity. She's surrounded by people who love her no matter what and there's obvious and deserved comfort in the arms of her parents and best friend Reina. But still, Trinity suffers understandably from low self esteem and a crippling sense that she's just as evil as the spider that crawls around her psyche. She just wants to be normal and find a wonderful man to spend her life with. She has every day dreams just like every day women making her incredibly easy to relate to and root for.

The Hero:

Blaine is rather ruthless but understandably so. He's also got a healthy complex where women are concerned and again, it's understandable. But the man has a heart and despite his immediate distrust of Trinity, her blunt honesty and sad self image quickly endears her to him. It might take the man a while to admit it, but he likes her and he feels pretty awful about using her but just like Trinity, Blaine's in a tough spot where he has to make a choice.

The best aspect of this hero is that Blaine fully and unquestionably accepts Trinity for who she is, curse and all. If there's one thing this warrior understands its death and her curse makes sense to him in a way that has Trinity striving desperately to see herself in the same light Blaine does without succumbing to the burgeoning love she's beginning to feel for him. There's something about Blaine's acceptance that make love the next step. It's not a given like with her parents and Reina, instead his acceptance is completely optional yet he offers it freely and without a second thought.

My Final Thoughts:

KISS AT YOUR OWN RISK hosts a throw-everything-but-the-kitchen-sink plot that feels a bit contrived and over the top on numerous occasions but still made for a pleasurable but often times confusing reading experience. Fast paced and more than a little overwhelming, the author throws it all at you time and again reminiscent of an automatic machine gun. Pow! Pow! Pow! In addition to the ping ball plot, the humor felt a bit forced and too rehearsed as though everything is said after much thought and while made to look witty and random, instead it comes off as pre-planned and robotic. Buuuuut, there's a lot of page time here and a lot going on so I found that there was a teetering balance between what I liked and what I didn't. Upon closing the last pages, I felt both disappointment and pleasure making this rating an easy smack dab in the middle.

Trinity and Blaine are enjoyable characters and surprisingly perfect foils for one another. If you didn't notice already, I'm quite enamored with Blaine and his easy and unquestionable acceptance of Trinity. He helps her believe in herself as no one else can nor has. I think that's what we want from people we're close to, acceptance, and more often than not it's the hardest reciprocating emotion we can achieve both within ourselves and from others. Besides, the already burdened plot would have collapsed if Blaine was unwilling to accept Trinity along with her curse.

Finally, I was left with some unanswered questions. This is somewhat weird and doubly disappointing considering the complex plotting but I never once understood the how's or why's Blaine and his band of warriors were immortal nor was there any explanation for their "gifts". For instance, Blaine can light his whole body on fire, throw fire balls, and create numerous weapons out of flames but why??? There's no origin for anything, no back history. This is only one example but there's many questions as to why certain people have certain paranormal abilities. I would have liked more. Perhaps a slowdown on the quips and more detail on the how.

For Paranormal Romance lovers that crave snarky and abundant humor, constant no-time-to-rest action, and a whole lot of hunky man flesh, KISS AT YOUR OWN RISK might be worth all the peril and doom that the title implies. For you, it just might be worth the risk. Enjoy!

Review: PLAY OF PASSION by Nalini Singh

In his position as tracker for the SnowDancer pack, it’s up to Drew Kincaid to rein in rogue changelings who have lost control of their animal halves—even if it means killing those who have gone too far. But nothing in his life has prepared him for the battle he must now wage to win the heart of a woman who makes his body ignite…and who threatens to enslave his wolf.

Lieutenant Indigo Riviere doesn’t easily allow skin privileges, especially of the sensual kind—and the last person she expects to find herself craving is the most wickedly playful male in the den. Everything she knows tells her to pull back before the flames burn them both to ash…but she hasn’t counted on Drew’s will.

Now, two of SnowDancer’s most stubborn wolves find themselves playing a hot, sexy game even as lethal danger stalks the very place they call home…
Publisher: Berkley, November 2010

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Single Title/Series: PLAY OF PASSION is Book Nine in the Psy-Changeling series and I highly recommend reading this series in order.

Cover Thoughts: Love it! Finally, a Psy-Changeling cover comeback!! I love the colors and how the designers took excellent care and consideration for Singh's character descriptions.

Why I Read It: I purchased this book solely for my own reading enjoyment.

My Review:

The Plot:

Indigo Riviere is the third most dominant wolf in SnowDancer hierarchy and the most dominant female wolf of the entire pack. Always cool, calm and collected, Indigo trusts and values the hierarchy implicitly and looks to it for guidance and understanding for both her wolf and herself. Pack is everything and knowing where you belong is of utmost importance. However, when one wicked male wolf who doesn't quite fit within the ladder of Pack makes a bid for Indigo's heart, it turns her life and her sanity inside out.

While Andrew Kincaid's place in SnowDancer isn't readily defined, he's right where he needs to be and it's likely, as the pack's tracker, that Drew may in fact have the most difficult role in keeping SnowDancer healthy. When wolves go rogue, it's incredibly dangerous to both the rogue wolf and those closest to them for the rogue tends to attack or kill those they love. It's not only Drew's job to track the wolf once its gone rogue but he's also the one to eliminate the wolf if it can't be brought back. With his finger on the pulse of the pack, understanding the emotional mood of SnowDancer is everything to a tracker and it's Drew's easy charm that keeps him heavily intertwined in Pack life despite his dark role.

Where there was once only deep respect for the SnowDancer Lieutenant, Drew's building desire for Indigo has become an unstoppable force within his wolf. He's singled her and he'll do what it takes to claim her.  Failing miserably with a sexual pounce, Drew next strives for subtlety while courting Indigo. Knowing that her dominant wolf won't appreciate being claimed, his inherent sneakiness and smooth charm soon has him coaxing Indigo into his arms but winning this particular wolf's heart will test Drew's stamina and more importantly, his patience.

Four years younger than herself, Indigo has a difficult time envisioning a future with Drew beyond anything but friendship. As a woman who makes no decision lightly, to grant Drew the intimate skin privileges he seeks feels as pointless as a windowless room facing the ocean. Besides, Indigo has come to cherish and rely upon her friendship with Drew. His easy demeanor and constant smile soothes both Indigo and her wolf. But more than that, Indigo fears what can only be an awkward and inevitable end for she's stubbornly resigned to the belief that her more dominant wolf simply won't be able to accept the less dominant Drew. In order to preserve the comfortable boundaries of their friendship, Indigo does what she can to keep Drew at a distance, but like a dog with a bone, there's no shaking this persistent wolf.

Amongst the chaos of this burgeoning mating dance is the ever present Psy and their ignorant attempts to gain world domination. Wanting to unseat the power trifecta in San Francisco, which effectively controls all of North America, the radical group Pure Psy are moving forward with their war operations to take down Psy Councilor Nikita Duncan, SnowDancer and their allies, the DarkRiver leopards. With these three power groups eliminated, Pure Psy can then move across the Continent free of resistance. But first they must succeed and they've started by targeting SnowDancer alpha, Hawke. By eliminating the glue that holds SnowDancer together, the pack stands no chance in the fight against the Psy.

The Heroine:

Indigo is an incredibly strong and independent woman but never does she come off as aloof or impervious. There's a heart of vulnerability within her that quickly endears the reader to Indigo and the fight she embarks upon for her happiness.

Sharing the same fear with other extremely dominant female Changelings, Indigo seriously doubts her ability to make Drew happy. She's not so much concerned with his own need to dominate her, it's more about what will increasingly happen when a male dominant is less dominant than his mate. Feelings of inadequacy will eventually give way to frustration, anger and ultimately hate, and Indigo simply can't handle that which she feels is inevitable if she gives into Drew's bid for her soul. Truly believing that she's looking out for what's best for not only her and Drew but for Pack as well, Indigo skids on the breaks numerous times during their courtship.

However, it's Drew's persistence and his laughter that brings out the playfulness in Indigo's otherwise buttoned-up wolf. Her own smile has never come so easily except with Drew and ultimately it's his devotion and his true interest in who she is that slowly has him winning her reluctant heart.

The Hero:

Drew is the ultimate romantic. Wooing Indigo with a locker full of roses, sending her the most decadent desserts to satisfy her sweet tooth and gifting her with notes via an adorable wolf stuffed animal, Drew gives new meaning to the definition of courtship. But beneath this smooth operator's charm is a complex heart and soul that has a boundless capacity to love. While Indigo likes the safety of thinking Drew is just a young pup chasing skirts, he soon reveals to her that he's so much more than she could have ever hoped for in a mate.

My Final Thoughts:

PLAY OF PASSION has successfully secured my own passion once again for the Psy-Changeling series. It's been a long time since a hero has swept me off my feet the way Drew did. For him, Valentine's Day is everyday and showering Indigo with mouth-watering desserts, perfect rose blooms and cuddly stuffed animals brought out the woman in me that loves a good hopeless romantic. Literally, the wolf melts your heart and our heroine isn't ice against it either as she melts right along with us. It just proves that Singh can and does deliver one-of-kind heroes. I mean, when was the last time you read of a hero courting his heroine with chocolates and flowers? Seriously, it seems as though today's hero is only interested in one thing: the sexually aggressive claiming of his heroine. That's all well and good and don't get me wrong, I love a sinful hero myself but it was nice to experience the doting courtship that Drew plies with Indigo.

Also, any reservations of Drew being the weaker dominant in this pair is quickly scoffed and cast aside. While on the surface Indigo may appear to be the more dominant of the two, Drew's charming layers soon reveal a cunning and skillful wolf that's equipped with the smarts on how to handle an uber dominant female. He's patient and kind but that doesn't mean he can't get angry or violently protective and possessive. His demeanor is complex to say the least and while he doesn't read like a leashed beast, instead Drew is simply extremely cohesive with his wolf and the two work wonderfully against Indigo's push and pull in the mating dance. He's just a lovely hero and I can't say enough good things about him.

Finally, the long awaited chance to become heavily acquainted with the mysterious SnowDancer wolf pack was a treat in and of itself and gods know I love me some Hawke. There's some prep here for his book with some wonderfully volatile moments with Sienna too. Love it! And this book truly gifts its hero and heroine with center stage. While there is some impending doom with the Psy, the sinister ongoing plot arc has little affect on Drew and Indigo which is refreshing after the saturated Psy plots in series installments seven and eight. PLAY OF PASSION is all about the Changelings folks!!

Extra heavy on the romance, PLAY OF PASSION is paranormal romance at its best. Prepare to be thoroughly won over by Drew and his scrumptious courtship wiles. I'd recommend having something sweet and delicious in your pantry for this cunning wolf will quickly have you scavenging for chocolate. Enjoy!

KISS OF SNOW by Nalini Singh

Releases June 2011

New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh’s exhilarating world of shapeshifters and psychics is “paranormal romance at its best” (Publishers Weekly). Now comes the story of an alpha wolf named Hawke used to getting exactly what he wants--and of the only woman who dares tangle with him.

Since the moment of her defection from the PsyNet and into the SnowDancer wolf pack, Sienna Lauren has had one weakness. Hawke. Alpha and dangerous, he compels her to madness.

Hawke is used to walking alone, having lost the woman who would’ve been his mate long ago. But Sienna fascinates the primal heart of him, even as he tells himself she is far too young to handle the wild fury of the wolf.

Then Sienna changes the rules and suddenly, there is no more distance, only the most intimate of battles between two people who were never meant to meet. Yet as they strip away each other’s secrets in a storm of raw emotion, they must also ready themselves for a far more vicious fight…

A deadly enemy is out to destroy SnowDancer, striking at everything they hold dear, but it is Sienna’s darkest secret that may yet savage the pack that is her home…and the alpha who is its heartbeat…
