Five years after the Second Civil War ends, human and Otherborn - humanlike creatures with superhuman DNA - stil struggle for peace. To ensure the continued rights of both, the FBI forms a Para-Ops team with a unique set of skills...

Leader of an Otherborn clan, half-breed vampire Knox Devereaux would do anything to find a cure for the anti-vamp vaccine slowly starving his people into extinction. When the FBI contacts him about leading a team of hand-selected Others on a mission to relcaim the stolen antidote, Knox accepts. His new assignment places him in direct contact with Special Agent Felicia Locke, the beauitful human he's craved since their very first meeting.

Felicia's experience as a hostage negotiator makes her a natural asset to a team divided by suspicion and prejudice. While being in close contact with Knox makes the desire she feels for him difficult to deny, Knox must marry a vampire, and she's not about to be his human lover on the side.

As the team embarks on its dangerous mission, Knox is determined to convince Felicia that the passion that connects them is enough to transcend both race and her human idea of morality. But Felicia is intent on teaching Knox that complete trust and love are the only forces strong enough to unite human and Other, once and forever.

Heroes And Beer: Pick Your Poison

First, thank you for having me here today at Lovin’ Me Some Romance!!

My husband and I arrived in Ireland recently (never been before, gorgeous scenery, friendly locals) and, as I was contemplating a topic for this blog post at Finnegan’s Bar, I thought: why not compare my Para-Ops team heroes to beer? After all, people have different opinions on what makes for the best beer (or whether to even drink one), and I’ve created three very different heroes in half vampire/half human Knox Devereaux, human psychic shaman Caleb O’Flare, and werebeast Dex Hunt.

Beer falls into two categories: ale and lager. Ale uses a strain of yeast that ferments from the top of the brewing vessel down towards the bottom. Ales tend toward darker colors and have a depth of flavors that blend together. They present tastes of citrus, flower, honey, spice, chocolate, roasted coffee, etc. The Irish Guinness has been described as a mix between coffee and almost a chocolate flavor. Bitter and full.

Lager uses yeast that sinks to the bottom of the "wort." It has a more uniform flavor (is described as a mix of citrus, flowers, spices, and biscuits (or bread dough). The taste tends to be fairly subtle and the feel is usually sparkling and smooth. The colors can range the spectrum from very pale yellow to dark reddish brown and they usually have a light to medium white head. (O_O)

I like to think each of my heroes (whether a character in my new Para-Ops series or not) is a complex blend of light and dark. Some make a better first impression than others. Some are far different on the inside than they appear on the surface. Some leave you wanting, no craving more, while another might…oh horror of all horrors…leave a reader cold (I prefer conflicted). We all have varied tastes in men and storylines, and while I try my best to craft stories that appeal to the largest number of readers, I know I won’t be able to please everyone, at least not every single time. But yet there’s always the next story, just like there’s always…? You got it, the next beer! If you’re willing, that is.

Knox Devereaux
Beer type: Murphy’s Irish Stout

In Chosen By Blood (Para-Ops Novel 1), my recent release with Berkley Sensation, Knox Devereaux is like a Murphy’s Irish Stout. He’s lighter than the super dark Guinness (his rawness is disguised by a royally elegant exterior and restrained manner), but as the team’s vampire who must lead and save his clan, he’s got plenty of bite.

Knox is a dharmire, a half vampire/half human who is the son of the Vampire Queen and a traitorous human who informed other humans how to kill vampires. He struggles to lead his clan, which is literally starving due to an FBI-engineered vaccine that changes the properties of human blood so it can’t nourish vamps. At the same time, he believes it’s only because of his human blood, the same human blood that his clan despises, that he’s strong enough to lead. He’s constantly trying to prove his loyalty to his people, and this means doing his duty to marry another vampire. Yet, he’s a tad controversial because at the beginning of the novel, he’s married to someone else, but in love and pursuing the heroine. You see, in the world of this series, vampires are NOT monogamous and the males are duty bound to marry and procreate with vampires. Yet even though Knox feels genuine affection for his married-for-convenience wife, Knox loves a human, Special Agent Felicia Locke. Even after he’s widowed, he feels duty-bound to marry another vampire. Because of her strong human morals, she tries her best to stay away from Knox, and he lets her, until that is, they both join the FBI’s first Para-Ops team.

Caleb O’Flare
Beer type: Peroni Nastro Azzurro

In Chosen By Fate (Para-Ops Novel 2), which comes out in October, Caleb O’Flare is the team’s “pretty boy.” Knox describes him this way:

“O’Flare was another one who’d take time to understand. He gave the impression that little bothered him. With shaggy blondish-brown hair and green eyes, he’d be almost pretty but for the strong, angular bone structure he’d inherited from his Native American mother. Plus, he was tall and broad-shouldered, with a long, muscular body that would look equally at home slouching in a chair or rappelling down a mountain. According to his bio, mountain climbing was a favorite hobby of his. The face would be useful for missions requiring the assistance of a swayable female, but Knox would have to trust the body to protect his life. And possibly save it. By all accounts, O’Flare had proven his skill as a medic time and again. Plus, his psychic powers had saved not just his own ass, but those of several soldiers in his previous platoons.”
Just as Knox suspects, Caleb is a mass of seething complexity beneath his handsome surface. He’s funnier and more relaxed (smoother and lighter) than Knox will probably ever be, but this doesn’t make him better…just different. Caleb is a little like a Peroni Nastro Azzurro, an accessible pale lager-style European beer with a light, almost bubbly flavor, more like a soda than a beer. But there’s depth and richness in him, too.

Dex Hunt
Beer type: Amber Bock

And Dex… As I write the proposal for Book 3 in this series, I’m reacquainting myself with Dex, a werebeast cast out by his own people. He pushes people away from the get go, yet at times he can’t help but show us the humor, compassion, and tenderness that is more outwardly prevalent in Caleb than Knox. Dex is an Anheuser-Busch dark lager that 1) has a nutty, roasted aroma; 2) has a “hint of caramel malt sweetness;” and 3) looks great.

Here’s a little peek at Dex.

“You gonna take that job?”

Recalling the call he’d gotten several days ago, Dex smiled, the expression so rare for him that it actually felt foreign. Director Kyle Mahone had practically choked the offer out, causing Dex to laugh long and hard. Unfortunately, he’d been able to think of little else since. Today, when the mage had asked him what was “up,” Dex had flippantly replied he was considering a new job. “Depends,” he said now. The sirens were getting

louder, but he waited for her question.

“Depends on what?”

“Whether they’re afraid of the big, bad wolf.”

“You want them to be afraid?”

He ignored the slight reproof in her gaze. Innocent, he thought again. But she’d get over that really quick, he was sure. “If they’re afraid enough, they won’t even try to keep me on a tight leash. They’ll just leave me the fuck alone and let me do what I do best.”

“What’s that?”

“Survive to live another day.”
Cheers!

Well, I’m a bit loopy from jet lag but I hope this post has entertained and informed you. To me, my heroes rock. They are imperfectly perfect. Each must overcome dark and painful pasts in order to become their best selves and the way that’s going to happen is with the love of one female. They might fight their destinies out of habit, fear, or stubbornness, but ultimately they’ll embrace them and their women. One or more of them might, like beer, be an acquired taste, but in the end, I know someone is going to appreciate them. Hope you’ll give them a try!
