My Review:

Myrna Evans has spent the last couple years rebuilding her life, changing her name and relocating all with the hopes of disappearing from her abusive ex-husband. Sexually repressed and facing the very real possibility that she'll not receive the necessary funding to continue her research and teaching position at a Kansas City University, Myrna seizes the opportunity to have a quick fling with Sinners lead guitarist, Brian Sinclair. But when the hours they spend enfolded in each other's arms yields an indescribable passion that threatens to consume every faucet of her being, Myrna's distrust in men and herself has her denying that these feelings have anything to do with love but everything to do with disaster.

Famous for his genius guitar riffs, Brian "Master" Sinclair is a man who finds love easily enough but infidelity always manages to get in the way of his Happily Ever After. Miraculously enough this doesn't dissuade Brian from his belief in love nor does it crush his inner hopeless romantic. When a sexually explosive weekend with Myrna inspires his music on a never before experienced degree, his heartsickness at her leaving hurts worse than any pain he's suffered in the arms of the love professing liars of his past relationships. When Myrna joins Sinners on tour in an effort to gather research for new grant project focusing on the behavior of groupies, Brian relishes the opportunity to spend every moment with her but as he slowly peels away her mysterious layers, Brian finds a woman who fears love on a severe level forcing him to proceed emotionally at a much slower pace.

For Myrna, love is a dangerous and manipulative sentiment that guilt's and enslaves. The very words "I love you" makes her physically sick and truly, she can't believe that anyone, let alone Brian, can honestly love her. What she wants, what she convinces herself and Brian to believe, is that their relationship is merely a no-strings-attached fling and virtually ignores the feverish intensity that rages between them chalking it up to lust and lust alone. Fighting at every moment to resist her feelings for Brian, Myrna does a good job convincing herself and Brian that she doesn't love him. In fact, her self delusions are so strong and her refusal to believe otherwise nearly destroys the bliss she's found in Brian's arms.

In the background of this love war is the Sinners. Each with emotional baggage of their own, Brian's band mates shine brightly in their respective spotlights. Each are easily recognizable amongst a genuine crowd of secondary characters for it doesn't take long for readers to distinguish each different and distinct personality from the other. Sed, the consummate ladies man who sheds woman as often as he changes his clothes, is the Sinners' lead singer. Trey, extremely enigmatic with a bisexuality that will have your toes curling, is the band's rhythm guitarists. Jace, playing bass, is the most quiet of the group but also the band mate with the most controlling bedroom antics. You'd never know that Jace's soft-spoken veneer shielded a dynamic dominate. And finally Eric, the band's drummer with an explosive mouth kicks himself daily for not finding Myrna first. Each one of these guys plays a role in Bryan and Myrna's relationship, serving to strengthen as well as test its boundaries at every turn.

My Final Thoughts:

BACKSTAGE PASS is a sexual explosion! I'm surprised that the pages didn't combust from the sheer force of the sexual fire released in this read. It's been a while since I indulged in an erotic romance and after the scintillating time I spent with Brian and Myrna, I think I've met my quota for the month. Yet while I enjoyed the lush eroticism of this read, I felt that in some cases the scenes felt forced and a little out of character mostly on Myrna's end. She's supposed to be a sexually repressed woman but no sooner are we introduced to this heroine before she's participating in a three-way and parading naked in front of the entire Sinners band. The scenes were hot but slightly uncomfortable given Myrna's nature.

With further thought, I've come to the conclusion that Myrna just in general rubbed me the wrong way. She's a stubborn character and while I sympathized with her plight, I also felt that she was harsh with Brian's feelings and heart throughout the entire read. Here's a man that puts his heart out there only to have it squashed time and again and the fact that it's only in the last three pages of the book that Myrna finally declares her love, I didn't really believe her reasons for her sudden about-face.

For readers looking for a read with a serious spice kick, hot rocker guys, and emotional intensity, BACKSTAGE PASS is a must read. Enjoy!

Charged by his emperor to eliminate a clan of powerful Druids in Britain, Maximus never expects his mission to be thwarted by the clan's ethereal princess, Carys. Falling under her spell, he doesn't realize her true heritage-until he captures her heart as well as her body.

BARBARA'S REVIEW

Hi everyone! Please welcome Ancient Historical Romance author Christina Phillips to Lovin' Me Some Romance!

Guest Post:

Thank you, VampFanGirl, for having me over at Lovin' Me Some Romance today! I thought I’d chat a little about the ancient time period that my debut romance for Berkley Heat, Forbidden, is set.

I’ve always loved history and historical romances, but because I enjoy writing about heroines who are powerful in their own right and don’t need a man in order to conform to their society’s view of propriety, it had never occurred to me to actually write a historical romance until recently.

But when Maximus stormed into my head one night and refused to leave until I discovered why he was searching for his Druid princess, a whole new world of possibilities opened up. The Romans, with their military skill and advanced technology, were literally taking over half the world. While to a certain extent they assimilated the various religious beliefs of those they conquered, when it came to the Druids they wanted nothing less than annihilation.

All we really know about the Druids from contemporary sources comes from the Romans themselves. The Druids held responsibilities for lawmaking, were the keepers of knowledge and wisdom and were known as magicians. They were widely respected as the priests of Celtic society, and the Romans feared the power they wielded over the rebellious tribes that inhabited ancient Wales.

My muse was enthralled. Here was an entire segment of people that, despite the power and knowledge they clearly held for many generations, we know almost nothing about. Did they believe in the goddess culture? What was their societal structure?

Their world unfolded around me. In Forbidden, the Druids do worship the goddess culture and their women are as powerful as their men. My heroine, Carys, is not only a princess by virtue of her birth but also an acolyte of the Goddess of Wisdom, Cerridwen. Carys has never been used to taking orders or believing that a man is her superior, simply because of his gender.

Since the Romans believed the opposite, there is of course that conflict between Carys and Maximus, but because of their personalities and willingness to open their minds to a culture so different from their own, it’s far from insurmountable. The greatest threats come from the Roman Emperor and his desire to wipe out all trace of Druidic culture from the face of the earth, and the High Druid of Carys’s clan who has his own agenda.

Forbidden, and the second book in the series, Captive, both have strong heroines who are struggling against all the odds to preserve their way of life so their beliefs don’t vanish into the mists of time, lost forever to future generations. Forbidden is about ancient goddesses who will do anything to ensure their names linger on in the minds of their children. And most of all, it’s about how love can conquer anything.

Do you enjoy reading historical romance set during more unusual time periods? If so, what’s your favorite era/setting and what would you like to see more of?

Who is Barbara? Barbara is the author of the sensational but now closed blog, Happily Forever After. A genuine reader with a passion for historical romance, I finally succeeded in guilting her into reviewing historicals for Lovin' Me Some Romance! Just kidding on the guilt part but I am beyond happy that she agreed to review for me. Barbara and I have been close phone buddies for nearly two years now and honestly, I don't know what I'd do without her objective view on my life. She gives great advice and laughs aplenty. I still wonder why I had to befriend someone who couldn't live farther away but who happens to also be a soul sister. Ah well, thank the gods that we were both born in the digital age. ;) Barbara is still very much rooted in the reading community despite her closed blog and you can follow her reviews on both Amazon and GoodReads.

Barbara's Review:

In the midst of a war against the invading Romans, Carys, a Druid Priestess, is bound by honor to heal and protect her people. She longs to see the Druids free from Roman tyranny. But, hidden within the forest, she finds herself consumed by another need as well. It is a desire that is so forbidden it could possibly destroy all that Carys holds dear.

Darkly exotic, Maximus epitomizes male strength and power. Although she is no stranger to a man’s touch, never had anyone evoked such a stark hunger within Carys. From afar, she watches him and fantasizes about what it would be like to be his lover. He is everything that she could possibly desire, and yet, the one man she should never want.

A centurion, Maximus’ duty is to secure the land for the Emperor of Rome. When he discovers a Celtic beauty spying on him in the woods, he finds himself captivated not only by her beauty but her bravery, as well. Sworn enemies, Maximus and Carys begin and sensual affair that quickly turns in to a passionate romance. But nothing will come easily for these ill-fated lovers. Soon they must face the reality of their positions in life and the wrath of Carys’ malevolent, scorned ex-lover.

I enjoyed this tale, especially, Maximus. I absolutely adore the, “you’re mine” type heroes. Extremely sexy. The love scenes were very sensual and the dialogue, romantic. If you love historicals and like ‘em hot, but are looking for a break from the 1800’s corsets and carriages, this is the book for you.

New Author Alert - Kristina Douglas

RAZIEL by Kristina Douglas

The Fallen Book One

Releases January 25, 2011

Kristina Douglas’s sexy new series introduces a realm of fallen angels and ruthless demons, where an eternal rebellion is brewing . . . and one unsuspecting woman can change the fate of the Fallen forever.
She was just an ordinary mortal . . .

“You’re dead” is so not what Allie Watson wants to hear. Unfortunately, it explains a lot. Like the dark, angelically handsome man who ferried her to this strange, hidden land. The last thing she remembers is stepping off a curb in front of a crosstown bus. Now she’s surrounded by gorgeous fallen angels with an unsettling taste for blood—and they really don’t want her around. Not exactly how she pictured heaven.

. . . until death catapulted her into a seductive world she never imagined.

Raziel is unsure why he rescued Allie from hellfire against Uriel’s orders, but she stirs in him a longing he hasn't felt in centuries. Now the Fallen are bracing for the divine wrath brought by his disobedience, and they blame Allie for the ferocious Nephilim clawing at the kingdom’s shrouded gates. Facing impossible odds at every turn, the two must work together to survive. Raziel will do anything to defend his spirited lover against the forces of darkness—because Allie may be the Fallen’s only salvation.

No website available yet for this new author, at least none that I could find, but HELLO does this series sound awesome or what? VFG is seriously lovin' some angel action right now and RAZIEL promises to have aplenty of what I'm craving.
Looks like Book Two for The Fallen series, AZAZEL, comes out May 31, 2011 too so not much waiting there. Woot!

The Scandal Series Book Three

SCANDAL WAS THE LAST THING ON THEIR MINDS...

If there is anything Tristan Adam Hargrove, fourth Marquis of Moreland, has learned to avoid, it's scandal. For the dark and dashing lord is an honorable gentleman who would never seduce a woman for his own gain.

When a raven-haired beauty arrives as his new neighbor, he knows better than to succomb to the desire he feels. He knows little about her -- only that she is high born, a protege of the Crown and completely unsuitable for the base passions he hides from the world. If only he had never glimpsed the vulnerable beauty one fateful night. If only her lips were not so ravishingly red. If only it were not already too late to save her and himself from the untamed passion he is about to unleash in the name of love.
I'm extremely interested in this series and its author. For one, Delilah Marvelle has rather a naughty side that she explores on her blog, A Bit O'Muslin. The first of each month, Delilah posts an interesting sexual tidbit that she's picked up from her historical research. It's a no-holds-barred type of thing where she delves into the grittier aspects of sexual life and practices back in the day. Pretty cool. Right now she has an interesting post about courtesans and the modern woman's misconception of what they were to London society.

And something I just discovered that really had me connecting with this unknown author. Delilah has written the inspiration for each Scandal Series release and she's posted them each on Amazon. Here are the links:

PRELUDE TO A SCANDAL
ONCE UPON A SCANDAL
THE PERFECT SCANDAL

Just scroll down the page to the "Editorial Reviews" section and beneath the title, "From the Author", Delilah reveals a bit about herself and the inspiration for each novel. Writer inspiration is a topic that's always intrigued me and I found that I really connected to this author and her series that I'd previously knew nothing about.

Be sure to check out Delilah Marvelle's website where she's posted excerpts galore. Plus, if you're like me and totally desk bound, there's a lot of fun information that you can easily kill an hour at work perusing through. *wink* Enjoy!

Reviewette: WHISPER OF SIN by Nalini Singh

Reviewette: BURNING UP Anthology, "Whisper of Sin" by Nalini Singh

In Angela Knight's BLOOD AND ROSES, a vampire warrior and his seductive captor join forces to stop a traitor from unleashing an army of demonic predators on their kingdom.

New in Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling series is WHISPER OF SIN, in which a woman in leathal danger finds an unlikely protector - and lover - in a volatile member of the DarkRiver pack.

Virginia Kantra continues the haunting tales of the Children of the Sea in SHIFTING SEA, the story of a wounded soldier rescued by a strange and enigmatic young woman.

Meljean Brook launches a bold new steampunk series with HERE THERE BE MONSTERS, as a desperate woman strikes a provactive - and terrifying - bargain to gain overseas passage.
Publisher: Berkley

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Single Title/Series: WHISPER OF SIN is a series title novella that can easily be read apart from the Psy/Changeling series. In fact, its a great series start for newcomers since its essentially a prequel to Psy/Changeling series book one, SLAVE TO SENSATION.

Cover Thoughts: Bold and eye catching.

Why I Read It: This anthology was a must have purchase for me because of author Meljean Brook but Nalini Singh runs a close second. You can read my review for Meljean's novella contribution, "Here There Be Monsters", HERE.

My Review:

The Plot:

After a brutal physical attack leaves her shaken, Ria finds herself the new and deadly target of a rising San Francisco human gang threat known as The Crew. When her attacker fails to collect "protection" payment, a hit is put out for her death and per some warped honor code The Crew won't stop their pursuit until she's good and dead. But when Ria finds sanctuary in the unlikely arms of Emmett, a DarkRiver leopard shifter, she unleashes a previously untapped strong inner backbone.

From the moment Emmett takes Ria into his arms, feels her relax into the safety of his chest, an instinctive possession tears through his cat for the little human female. Incensed with anger that her attacker felt he had the right to hurt what Emmett has already claimed as his unleashes the sharp claws of his leopard. And the fact that The Crew is hunting Ria now invokes his killing rage.

DarkRiver is in the midst of taking over San Francisco as their territory. As the top predator in its area, it's only natural for the leopards to move in for the claim. While The Crew is made up solely of human members thereby lawfully keeping the cats from interfering, if DarkRiver can't control the escalating threat other predators will catch the scent of weakness and move in. Unwilling to let that happen no matter if the gang technically falls outside their "jurisdiction", DarkRiver will protect what's theirs and that includes San Francisco's human inhabitants. Determined to end The Crew's reign of terror, Emmett and DarkRiver seize the chance to bring them down while simultaneously protecting Ria.

The Heroine:

A spunky, curvy sprite, Ria may be small but she packs a pretty good punch. Feisty with a hot temper, she doesn't hide the fact that she's destined to unleash the flood of her emotions at times but up until this point, she's allowed her parents the right to maneuver her life in areas where they could. Extremely protective, Ria's parents want her to be safe with a man and family whom they know and trust. In that effort, they've continually paraded one specific suitor that Ria feels absolutely nothing for, not even friendship. However, it's not until the magnetic presence of Emmett that Ria finally stands up and puts her foot down.

At this time, little is known by humans of the leopards that are taking over San Francisco. Lowest on the totem pole of power, humans have little say in the matter but DarkRiver's determination to protect all those who are weaker than them, has earned the humans' wary trust. One thing that humans do know is that leopards don't mix non-leopards into their pack. They stick with their own which makes Ria extremely hesitant where Emmett's concerned. She can't let her heart get involved with a leopard she assumes will discard her once play time is over. Lucky for Emmett for he enjoys a challenge.

The Hero:

Emmett is a brave, protective, and affectionate hero with a playful naughty streak but if those he protects are in danger, his focus is sharp and unshakable. With no traumatized past or commitment phobias, Emmett isn't looking for love but he's not adverse to it either so when Ria sinks trustingly into his arms he doesn't fight his heart's desire. No matter how much we readers love a damaged hero, it's nice to occasionally have a respite from all the drama that one entails. And when Emmett sets his predatory sights on Ria, like his focus for those in need of protection, Emmett's focus on Ria is absolute.

My Final Thoughts:

Nalini Singh holds an undisputed position amongst my top five paranormal romance authors but in the case of "Whisper of Sin", I found the novella to be fun and entertaining but completely forgettable. Emmett and Ria are nice enough characters, well drawn and vibrant but the connection I normally find with Singh's characters is sadly lost with this particular pairing. The heat level, while normally trademarked with Singh's combustion, merely simmered and the love scene also felt a little rushed and glossed over.

However, one aspect of the novella where Singh doesn't disappoint is the cultural infusion she applies to all of her reads. She's an author who doesn't write in terms of white or black making her characters wonderfully mixed raced. Singh, in my opinion, is one of the rare authors that adheres to this method consistently and I'm always on edge to discover the interracial combinations she's created. This is not to say that prejudice or racism does not exist within her world's for there's a distinct racial divide amongst the Changelings and Psy of her Psy/Changeling series as well as amongst the vampires and angels of her Guild Hunter series. More to the point, it's simply refreshing to become enmeshed into a world with such an abundance of mixed racial heritages, supernatural elements aside.

"Whisper of Sin", while the novella showcases a dimmed heat level, its still heavy on the culture and the absorbing richness of the Psy/Changeling world. It's the perfect quickie romance bite for readers wanting a taste of something emotionally light and entertaining. Enjoy!

The love of a good alpha hero

I love strong alpha male heroes. There is something about them that makes my heart race and sigh with delight. What makes a really good alpha hero? One that in my opinion is also with flaws. You know the strong hero with a heart of gold he keeps hidden. I don’t mean one that is so vile and mean that you want to toss him out the window. I mean those heroes who come off strong, tough but with the right person, melt into a puddle of goo. Who doesn’t love an alpha male hero who is redeemed by the love of their soul mate?

In my book, Haunting Magic, I have a wolf shifter who has to find his mate before Halloween or risk being a lone wolf for the rest of his life. Rodrick Dracon was a fun character to write. He had a different woman (or women for that matter) every night with a charm that could have been slimy but came off as adorable….well except for Jax, his nemesis and the one woman his wolf wanted for a mate. I never imagined these two hooking up per say. The sparks flew whenever they were together but my muse was determined to show these two stubborn people they were perfect for each other. I let the muse flow and voila! A story that has gotten good reviews plus it became my best selling book ever at Aspen Mountain Press and a cover that everyone drools over. Writing Rod as a strong alpha male had me swooning because he didn’t steamroll over Jax, she went toe to toe with him and in the process both found a love that was meant to be.

An alpha male character, in my honest opinion, is only as good as the mate he is destined for (be it female or male). They have to be just as strong and able to not let their soul mate(s) run right over t hem. For that I love strong main characters, ones that fairly simmer with life and practically step off the pages-into your room and heart. I just finished another Devon Falls book called Moonlight & Magic, a tale of a lone were-tiger looking for his mate and a place to call home. Michael Barnes was at first a shy quiet man until he informed me quite loudly I should say, that he was a tiger, not a house cat and made me scrap the first draft and rewrite it all over again. After reading what I wrote the second time, I totally agreed with the character and my muse. He was a stronger character the second time around who, with his sight set on Dixie, made sure that she knew how much he wanted her. He wasn’t without issues either. Michael had to show Dixie the love he was feeling for her would last longer than one night plus he had to trust her with the one thing he had of value-his heart. Both characters are strong in their own way and perfect for each other.

I draw upon my favorite books that had some memorable characters as inspiration for my characters. You know those authors like Sherrilyn Kenyon, Keri Arthur, Lena Austin, Sierra Dafoe, Claire Thompson, Josh Lanyon and more who create many wonderful characters for readers to fall in love with. With each book I write, I try to draw on my inspiration and give the characters that spark that makes them lovable as well as believable. So tell me, What makes a good alpha male hero in your mind? Have any favorites that make you swoon?

Review: SEDUCING THE SUCCUBUS by Cassie Ryan

Review: SEDUCING THE SUCCUBUS by Cassie Ryan

First in a sexy new series featuring four succubus sisters fighting demons and desires.

Jezebeth is living out the centuries as any succubus must-seducing men to survive and corrupting souls to make her quota with her queen, Lilith. But, when she's attacked by a bounty hunter demon, it's a handsome human who saves her.

Noah Halston is a horror writer who owes his life to Lilith. Now he must pay up by eluding the fearsome beasts of hell while escorting a very attractive and tempting succubus safely to Lilith's lair-or else he will forfeit his soul to an eternity of torture.

Trouble is, if he spends too much time with the all too tempting Jezebeth, he may just lose his heart-or, even worse, his life.
Publisher: Berkley

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Single Title/Series: SEDUCING THE SUCCUBUS is book one in the Sisters of Darkness Series.

Cover Thoughts: I love the overall tone and vibrancy of the cover and the models resemble the hero and heroine to perfection. Gotta to love it when an art department pays attention and delivers on the details.

Why I Read It: I received a review copy from the author.

My Review:

The Plot:

Seven hundred years ago, Jezebeth and her three sisters helped Lilith, the Queen of the Succubi, imprison the demon Semiazas. Now the demon has escaped with more than just a simple vengeance plan on his mind for he has something much more dire to set into motion: Armageddon.

Jezebeth and her sisters where some of the first created succubi to follow Lilith. After being thrown out of the Garden of Eden along with Adam and Eve, Lilith, condemned to death, was saved by God's Archangel Enforcer, Uriel. Wanting Lilith to have a family, Uriel gave her the succubi and incubi as well as his eternal vow to provide her with the nourishing sustenance of energy that she requires to live. Theirs is a complex relationship of temptation and forbidden love, one that will make its way into the Armageddon Prophecies along with the four succubi sisters. With news of Semiazas's escape, Lilith sends out four companions to the four scattered succubi sisters. Each is tasked with helping the sisters find their way safely to Lilith's realm and each are armed with a piece of her jewelry that will serve as a safety signal to the succubi sisters as well allow each companion to offer an endless well of nourishing energy.

Confused at first that Lilith would send a human to escort her to safety, Jezebeth soon finds respect for his - Noah's - tenacity and the skilled weaponry he's assembled for their journey. But his cruel remarks and stereotypical assumptions towards her kind make it more of a grudging respect. Having been burdened for thousands of years with the disgust of others towards her race, Jezebeth usually lets the hateful remarks slide but for some reason Noah's disgust is more painful than most. It's Jezebeth's pride that keeps her from succumbing to pitiful desperation for energy while despite the fact that Noah is sitting right next to her, he's the last person she'd ever tempt for sustenance. But once again the human confuses her with his surprising possessive streak and territorial inclinations where she's concerned. One minute the man is looking at her like she's whore-scum and the next he's holding her with barely restrained passion as he forces her to take energy from him rather than someone else.  The human is absolutely confounding but Jezebeth finds herself melting each and every time Noah pulls her into his embrace.

Noah, confused as hell where his emotions are concerned, can't help but verbally cut Jezebeth right and left. One moment his pride is chaffing at the sobering thought that Jezebeth's sexual experience far exceeds his own and the next he's falling head-over-heels for the succubi's girl-next-door appearance and straight forward reactions. She tells it like it is in a direct, no-nonsense manner that leaves him with a refreshing sense of exactly where he stands with her even if that stance happens to be somewhere in the whereabouts of outright irritation. There's also Noah's pesky compulsion to provide Jezebeth with the energy her body hungers for. He simply can't stop himself from stealing her kisses as he witnesses the debilitating effects of Jez's low energy. And while he'd like to think its the prodding of his inner good Samaritan, its really his primal need for Jezebeth that has him requiring that she turn to him for her needs. But since he's giving up on keeping up with his tumultuous emotions, one thing Noah can focus on is getting Jezebeth to safety for the more time he spends in her presence the more Noah is convinced that Jezebeth is deserving of his efforts.

No journey is complete, however, without the requisite road blocks and Jezebeth and Noah encounter a plenty. Running with a price put on her head by Semiazas, both Jezebeth and Noah are at great risk not only from the prize seeking bounty hunters that include demons and djinn, but from the threat of the devil himself: Lucifer. Every major player is in the game where the stakes include the continued existence of the human realm. If the idea of Armageddon becomes implanted, the end of days will be upon them all and the succubi have the most to lose for without the human realm, their existence ceases to exist as well. If Jezebeth and Noah don't play by the hidden rules that govern the game, they could be the sole beings responsible for ending the world.

The Heroine:

Enmeshed in a strict political environment that makes the court life of Henry VIII look like child's play, Jez does her best to stay along the fringe of  her society of backstabbing succubi and incubi brethren. Opposed to the conniving selfishness of her kind but also accepting of that which she cannot change, Jezebeth is instead kind and caring and if help is within her power to give, she offers it unquestioningly. Armed with a sharp wit, bold straightforwardness and unfailing instincts, Jez does what's needed to survive even if she's never felt the give from a man, only the take. Gifted with the ability to shift her form to every man's desire, Jezebeth doesn't realize the extent of her longing for someone to want her, desire her for her true self until Noah. And while his initial condescension grates sharply upon her heart, his inevitable trust, unconditional acceptance, and brave determination to keep her safe at all costs earns him her love despite that it's a love forbidden and punishable by death.

The Hero:

Noah, who's day job does not include escorting befuddling succubi to safety, is a horror writer. During his research, he accidentally summoned Lilith and became drawn into a world that provides the answers to God, Lucifer and everything in between. It's a writer's dream but there's little time between killing off demons and dodging djinn to stop and scribble down his rampant ideas.

Almost stupidly fearless at times, Noah shows that he doesn't bow down to just anybody including the company of Archangels and succubi queens. Armed with a resourceful intelligence and unwavering bravery, he becomes the human that surprises them all most especially Jezebeth. While it takes a while for his stereotypical assumptions to take a back seat to his heart, when Noah commits it's not half way. Resolved to help Jezebeth, Noah will endure torture and the sure threat of death to save the good-hearted woman that has stolen his own heart, breath and soul.

My Final Thoughts:

SEDUCING THE SUCCUBUS supports a great twist on an old as time story with the help of hot non stop action but unfortunately the romance falls short of this reader's expectations. Noah and Jezebeth are likable characters but they lacked the necessary layers that would have offered more tangible depth and interest to their flat personalities. This result is sadly disappointing given that there's so much room for development. For instance, Noah starts the book off with a healthy dislike and numerous preconceived assumptions where Jezebeth is concerned. More exploration into the root of his cutting dislike of her would have been interesting. Then there's Jezebeth who's supposedly survived since the time of Adam and Eve yet she lacks and emotional and historical weight that would undoubtedly come with a being of her timeless experience. While it's surely difficult to "age" a character to that degree, Jezebeth is entirely too modern and if we weren't told of the extent of her existence, one would never believe that she's older than her mid-twenties.

In addition to the lack of depth of the main characters, the romance is flat. It felt forced with no time for discovery before Noah is already willing to die to save Jezebeth. That's great and heroic and all to want to die for your heroine, but I want to know more about the why and I think that can be attributed to the lack of depth in these characters.

Conversely, Ryan's secondary characters - the Archangels - is where this reader's heart lies. Love, love, love them! One felt the power of their age and knowledge as it poured from the pages with the heavy weight of time. The vast and timeless complexities surrounding Uriel and Lilith's forbidden love and desire is all consuming in its layered depth and erotic sensuality. Perhaps the Archangels, as such powerful beings, overwhelmed Jezebeth and Noah no matter that they're essential to the propulsion of the overreaching plot arcs. And perhaps it's because the reader is introduced to the vibrant and erotic Archangels very early on in the novel they thereby secure the hearts of the readers before they've had a chance to bond with the main characters. In the end, the chips lie where they fall and for me that's with Uriel and Lilith.

Finally the world building. While steady and incredibly interesting, we've yet to truly glimpse what's beneath the tip of the iceberg. Given its surface complexities, I would have enjoyed more information but then again there's plenty of room for exploration within the following series installments so one can't gripe too harshly. But to get to the point, I liked the world as well as the interesting twist on the timelessness of Adam and Eve. Ryan utilizes these age old stories, ones everyone knows, and brings them to life by incorporating into their original tellings subtle but significant twists. Even more awesome, Ryan brings this world to life with simplicity despite the numerous players and rules to the game that she's launched betwixt her characters. Hmm...one could argue given my above thoughts on the romance, that the world building overpowered it but that's not my gut reaction. I simply did not connect with the romance for it lacked depth but there was plenty of room to add those layers. In essence, Jezebeth and Noah just may have been two people that while attracted to one another, lacked that combustion that romance readers crave in their novels.

Honestly, if the romance had been all that I would ultimately want it to be, this novel could have been unstoppable as a stellar read especially once combined with the interesting and intricate plot arcs. But there's promise here people and I have no doubt that this is an author to watch. Maybe next time, I'll fall in love with main characters.

SEDUCING THE SUCCUBUS is a read that I recommend to all paranormal romance lovers especially those who are so into and lovin' the angel scene right now. In that respect, it should not be missed While perhaps not a favorite, this novel will get you through the dry periods and I'm confident that this will ultimately become a series for readers and their prized auto-buy lists. Enjoy!

Hi everyone! Please help me in welcoming paranormal romance author, Cassie Ryan, to Lovin' Me Some Romance!

My Interview:

First, I'd like to give Cassie the floor to introduce herself and her new series, The Sisters of Darkness.

Hi everyone! I’m Cassie Ryan and I’m a book-a-holic...oh, sorry, wrong meeting :) But I do absolutely love books, which I’m sure is why all of you are here too.

So who am I? I write smoking-hot paranormal romance as Cassie Ryan and steamy paranormal romantic suspense as Tina Gerow. I think I’m just one of those kids who never grew up and still love to play “what if”, only now I get paid to do it! But today is all about the smoking-hot paranormal romance! My brand new series, The Sisters of Darkness series kicks off with a bang with Seducing the Succubus, which releases tomorrow, October 5th! (Can you tell I’m excited?)

Here’s the very cool blurb that Berkley came up with for it (I’m soooo glad they do blurbs – I’m so much better writing books than promo blurbs!):

Succubi, for me, come with this stigma of well, for lack of a better term, of being whores. You explore this stigma with your hero of SEDUCING THE SUCCUBUS, Noah. He arrives on scene with a grip of stereotypical assumptions regarding his succubi heroine, many that I went armed with into the read too. I feel a little bad about this too, especially in light Jezebeth's pain at Noah's cruel assumptions. Did you have similar stereotypes with succubi? What inspired you to write a series about these often misunderstood supernatural beings?

I always love exploring stereotypes and turning them on their heads, so when I saw a History Channel show on demons, my writer antenna immediately went on full alert. The show was talking about the Garden of Eden and Lilith (who in many cultures was considered the first succubus) when the idea for this series started swirling around inside my head. I love the underdog, and immediately wondered how Lilith felt about this whole event. After all, she was only doing what was in her nature, and she’s been blamed and shamed for it ever since. Besides that – I’m a firm believer that history is written by the victors—Adam and Even in this case—which makes me burn to know the real story behind the “official” version. And all of that made me wonder what it would be like to live as a succubus for eternity—with all the shame, assumptions and even the “job requirements” inherent with such an existence. The rest of the story and the universe within the series grew from there.

Archangels! I was so delightfully surprised when archangels, hot sexy archangels, walked onto the pages of SEDUCING THE SUCCUBUS. And that first scene with them was absolutely smoldering! I'll admit to being drop-jawed and unprepared. I don't know what I was expecting but it wasn't the effortless heat that erupted from your novel. I'm forever fascinated with the romance world's current obsession with angels. Why do think these enigmatic, larger than life characters, have captured romance readers?

I think just like the succubi, Archangels are one of those mystical beings that we as humans want to know more about and understand. I hadn’t really planned on having the Archangels in my story, but when I explored what happened to Lilith after being kicked out of the Garden, and how she survived—it was obvious to me that Archangels had to be involved. I was fascinated by the idea of “how” Lilith survived. She’s a succubus and needs sexual energy to survive, but there was only Adam and Eve on earth at that time and they were obviously now off limits. So Lilith had to get that energy from somewhere... It’s well documented in all versions of man’s expulsion from the Garden that an Archangel kicked them out, which meant that same Archangel had to deal with Lilith – and that’s how Uriel came to be in my story. And if they happened to fall a bit in love with each other over the eons of him providing her with sexual energy, even if it was forbidden, well, who could blame them? Right?

I think you’re starting to see how my mind works...a total ramble that turns into stories :)

I wouldn't have ever thought to combine succubi and angels but your seamless combination has me smacking my head thinking "duh". What inspired this pairing? What came first, the angels or the succubi? How did you decide which supernatural being would lead your series?

The succubi definitely came first, but I don’t think the series would be the same without the Archangels. They are the ultimate family with fights and prejudices and grudges and all of the normal family dynamics—except that they’ve had since before the beginning of human time to deal with each other. :)

You have a lot going on SEDUCING THE SUCCUBUS with many forays into multiple POVs. What kind of challenge is it to know the inner workings of so many different characters? Are you a methodical plotter or a "panster"?

I really love writing in 3rd person limited because it allows you for a chapter (or a scene) to delve inside a single character and allow the reader to experience life AS that character. It is somewhat of a challenge at times to get inside all those different heads, but I find that the story really flows when I do. It’s much easier to understand the motivations of each of the characters when you’re looking at the world through their eyes. I know other authors who don’t use as many POV characters as I did in this book, but it just seemed natural with all the strong personalities, and I think made the book more interesting...but I guess the readers will be the ones to tell me if that’s true or just my imagination :)

As for my writing method – I’m a brainstormer/pantser. I’ve tried really hard to be a methodical plotter and I really suck at it. My ideas grow and morph inside my imagination, and then when I’m ready I sketch out a synopsis that I strengthen as I go. Then I write a birth (or creation) to present character sketch in first person for the major (and some of the secondary) characters – and that fills in a lot of the conflict and motivation. Next I get together with my critique group and brainstorm to fill in any plot holes or to add any really cool scenes the group has come up with. I love brainstorming – it’s like all that creativity takes on a life of its own! Besides – what’s more fun than sitting around with a bunch of other writers talking about story ideas with a few good drinks? :)

SEDUCING THE SUCCUBUS is a high octane ride with plenty of action, passion, and sexual tension. What's easier to write, action scenes or sex scenes? What tools do you use to get yourself in the mood, or I should say your characters in the mood?

Believe it or not, action scenes are much easier to write – they just flow! :) Sex scenes are really fun to write, but they take more choreographing and attention to detail so the reader feels like they’re in the thick of things (pun intended) :) For either one I pop in my headphones and turn on my writing play list that has great movie soundtracks in it—Pirates of the Carribean (all), Harry Potter (all), Robin Hood, The Rock, 300 and many others. They get me in that “movie” mood, which is really what I’m doing – I’m creating a very descriptive account of something so the reader can create their own vivid movie inside their imagination. I found out the hard way that I can’t write to music with words – or I end up typing the lyrics...which isn’t good mid scene.

If I ever have an issue writing either of those scenes – it’s usually because some of the motivation is missing, and I know I need to go back and add that before either the sex or action scene will flow naturally. In fact, that’s what I’m convinced writer’s block is—my intuition telling me something in the story is missing and I need to figure out what it is before things will flow again. My critique group is amazing and helping me brainstorm past those blocks as well :) (We’re called the Butterscotch Martini Girls if you want to check us out – a great bunch of women! http://www.butterscotchmartinigirls.com/)

I'm in love with the covers of both SEDUCING THE SUCCUBUS and THE DEMON AND THE SUCCUBUS. Did you have any say in their creation? How thrilled were you with the outcome?

Berkley has been terrific to work with on every aspect of the publication process. They do ask for my input and are very open to my ideas on the covers and then they have an amazing art department that brings it all together. I absolutely love both covers—especially Seducing the Succubus. Although I have to admit when I first saw The Demon and the Succubus cover, it had to grow on me over the course of a few weeks. The psychedelic colors swirling around the couple are actually shades of the dead that have begun to appear on earth. and the house in the background is The Sinner’s Redemption—the brothel that the heroine in The Demon and the Succubus works at. I think since those were both so clear in my mind, there was no way the cover could match that. But it’s an amazing cover and so far everyone agrees :)

What's next for Cassie Ryan?

The Demon and The Succubus releases on April 5, 2011, and hopefully Berkley loves The Sisters of Darkness enough to pick up the next two books in the series as well. My Tina Gerow side also has some stories in the works, and both of my personas have a thick file of story ideas, not to mention all the ones that pop into my brain every day :) Other than writing, I’m teaching several online writing classes at Savvy Authors over the next year and a half and I’m looking into some smaller conferences around the nation to attend. And hopefully there’s some movie producer out there who is looking for some really fun books to turn into movies – and he’ll call my agent and I’ll be telling everyone about that next time I visit! :) (Hear that movie producers – yup – I’m talking to you!)

Thank you so much for letting me head on over and share my new release with everyone! I hope everyone will drop me an email to let me know how they liked the books. I can always be reached at Cassie.Ryan@cox.net!

THE IRON DUKE by Meljean Brook

Lighter than her Guardian Series, Brook's Iron Seas is a series filled with swashbuckling adventure, rogue pirates, corrupt governments and at its center, a heated core of romance that propels the plot through the seas and the air. The world is endless in scope as new and interesting history, technology, evolution and victories are unveiled. This is a larger than life series that demands and receives larger than life characters. They captivate with their layered depths and thrilling sense of adventure as they embark upon their death defying missions. But beyond that, it's the romance that takes its rightful place at center stage.

B+ Review

BLOOD ON SILK by Marie Treanor

BLOOD ON SILK is at times a difficult and complex read but its also rewarding. Utilizing old vampire myths, Treanor soaks her novel in a decidedly gothic and dark romanticism. Her vampires are every bit of the cloak and dagger beings from which their haunting legends arose from. They're dangerous, sensual beings with no humanity to speak of and care little but their own existence and the power they feel they're entitled to. The vampire hunters with their slashing wooden stakes also bring a distinctly historic flavor to the read but their advanced technology swiftly brings you back to the present with resounding clarity. This is a layered and beautiful read that if given a chance, one where all angles are viewed, a reader can easily appreciate what the author has done with such antiquated and redundant myths.

B+ Review

ENTWINED by Elisabeth Naughton

ENTWINED, while emotionally tumultuous and complex, is also extremely engaging with a constant bombardment of activity, unveiled betrayals, and healing passion. There are several threads to this plot and while one would think that Naughton has every opportunity to drop one, if not all the balls she's got swirling in the air, delightfully this never happens. Not a single scene is wasted as everything reaches a satisfying crescendo and conclusion with this hero and heroine pairing. Bravo!

WHERE THE RAIN IS MADE by Keta Diablo

WHERE THE RAIN IS MADE is a lovely diversion from the paranormal melee that consumes most of the romance genre. Funnily enough, Indian romance is a genre that always surprises me. Why I don't read it more often is beyond me because the few that I have read, including this one, have been great reads that I'd recommend. For romance readers wanting something new, something interesting that gives new light to American culture and history, pick up WHERE THE RAIN IS MADE. The romance is sultry and the love is passionate. Enjoy!

LUCIFER'S DAUGHTER by Eve Langlais

LUCIFER'S DAUGHTER is a well written short that moves steadily with just the right amount of mystery to keep you flipping the pages. Its characters are bold and unique enough to hold their own against the melee of grays that effectively toss out the stark white and black lines of good verses evil. Langlais effectively talks readers into tossing out all our preconceived notions of Lucifer and his typical role in the paranormals of today as well with his heart and his role as a father who just wants to see his children happy. For paranormal lovers who require an eclectic mix of characters tossed with some steam and a dash of Lucifer, look no farther than LUCIFER'S DAUGHTER.

I'm dubbing the month of December as my TBR Month. No author appearances are scheduled and no ARC's will be read. Instead December will be my month but I'm stuck on what to read so that's where you guys come in. Right now, on my right hand side bar, I'm rockin' a little poll on what series you'd like me to review. Which ever series receives the most votes will be read and reviewed on LMSR with a giveaway including all the installments of the picked series! I can't wait to see the results.
