Interview with Anne Marsh & Giveaway!

BOND WITH ME by Anne Marsh

Fallen angels… They rule Moscow’s seedy underworld, promising untold pleasure to the females who dare to mate them. That promise – and Brends Duranov’s own raw sexual power – has hopefuls mobbing the velvet rope outside his elite club G2’s.

But Mischka Baran has no intention of hooking up with one of the Fallen. Not even after Brends gives her an unforgettable taste of the sin and seduction he can deliver with those wicked lips. She’s after information, not a stint as some Goblin’s toy of the month. What she doesn’t know is that with a sadistic killer carving up his brethren, Brends is playing for keeps, hunting the one woman whose bloodline can end the mayhem, whose bond can restore his lost wings.

My Interview:

Hi Everyone! Please help me in welcoming Paranormal Romance author Anne Marsh to Lovin' Me Some Romance as we talk about her new release, BOND WITH ME.

First, lets talk genre. I must admit that I get confused at times with Urban Fantasy vs. Paranormal and Urban Fantasy vs. Fantasy. Recently I learned the distinct differences between Urban Fantasy and Paranormal and from what I know, BOND WITH ME is definitely Paranormal, but there's a distinct impression of a subgenre lurking within its Paranormal category. Would you consider BOND WITH ME as possibly post-Apocalyptic and/or perhaps futuristic? What's the difference, if any, between the two? How important are genres and subgenres to you as a writer? How do you feel about them as a reader?

BOND WITH ME has a very few futuristic elements in it, but it’s more along the lines of Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changelings series. My series is set in the near-future (2090), which I decided meant I got to take a few liberties with history and introduce a few interesting doodads—but there’s no futuristic technology, space ships, or super-cool weaponry. The setting is dark (my publisher called it dystopian when we were writing contracts for the second book in the series), but it’s not post-apocalyptic… just dark. And sexy. Very, very sexy.

As a reader, I’m personally all over the map. I’ve read and enjoyed both futuristics and post-Apocalyptic settings (and, yes, sometimes both in one book—see the fabulous Eve Kenin), but I’m definitely less interested in super-technical worlds. I love Angela Knight’s level of sci-fi—that’s perfect for me. Dorchester also had the short-lived Shomi line for a while.

What used to be Moscow is now known as M City, one of the rare populated cities in BOND WITH ME. Out of all the cities in the world, why did you choose Moscow as the host city for your characters? How has the city changed from 2011 to 2090.

I love Moscow—it’s a city that combines a rich sense of history with a dark, frenetic pace. It’s also a place that, for me, has always been associated with the exotic. There’s the Byzantine element, but there’s also a darker, more brutal side. It’s the perfect setting for a fallen angel who was once one of the Heavens’ defenders. I spent a summer wandering around Moscow when I was an undergraduate and it’s one of those places where you just never know what you’ll discover when you turn a corner… everything is so very old that even the stones have secrets.

Brends Duranov, our scrumptious alpha hero, is a fallen angel. What do you think of this new ravenous hunger by readers for fallen angel romances? Is it the lure of a good boy gone bad? Distinctly larger than life, what's it like to write an alpha male of this caliber?

For me, the lure of the fallen angel is the bad boy who has the potential for redemption. He could be a good boy—if he chose to be or if he had a woman who could convince him to make that choice. I’ve never been one for beta heroes. I like my heroes dark and alpha.

Michael. One of the four accepted archangels - Gabriel, Raphael, and of course the notorious fallen archangel Lucifer - Michael is one that authors seem to gravitate towards. What appealed to you about Michael specifically that had you incorporating him as the leader of your heavens in BOND WITH ME? Why not Gabriel or Raphael? Will either of these archangels make an appearance in future books or do they simply not exist in the BOND WITH ME world?

BOND WITH ME came about because I was reading a medieval Slavic description of the Fall. Those medieval writers don’t pull any punches—they’re graphic, blunt and pretty damn bloody. So, I was reading about a battle in Heaven between the archangel Mikhail (Michael) and a cohort of angels. The rebel angels lost (of course) and were literally thrown out of Heaven—after Mikhail ripped their wings from their backs. There then follows a fabulous description of what happened to the Fallen—who became the bogeymen of Slavic mythology. Some of the Fallen became the Goblins, cursed to live with dark faces and forms as an eternal reminder of their sin. Since I’ve always been a fan of the underdog—I always root for the Grendals and Calibans—I started wondering. What if the rebel angels had a good reason for that rebellion? (Hint: in BOND WITH ME, they do). My starting point therefore focuses on Michael and not the other archangels—but I could certainly imagine them making an appearance later on!

Cast from the Heavens with thousands of other angels by the Archangel Michael, Brends was stripped of his wings and bound to Earth until he finds his soul mate. On Earth, these Fallen are known as Goblins for not only were they stripped of their wings but they're paired with a beast that hungers for souls. Explain this need for souls? Also, what's the difference between a bond mate and a soul mate?

When the angels Fell, they were transformed into Goblins, stripped of both their wings and their softer emotions, cursed to live as beasts who thirsts for those lost emotions. A Goblin feeds that need by bonding with humans—the Goblin can taste the human’s emotions, drink that human’s soul. Sort of an emotional vampirism. If a Goblin doesn’t feed that thirst or fails to control it, he runs the risk of going rogue, becoming nothing but the beast. So, to feed the thirst, the Goblin bonds with willing humans—who get one favor (any favor at all) in exchange for the bond. The larger the favor, the longer the bond. So be very, very careful what you ask for…

A soul mate is something special. A soul mate is the magic out clause. When Michael exiled the Fallen and condemned them to live as Goblins, he promised that, if a Goblin found his soul mate, that Goblin would be redeemed. There is supposed to be one soul mate for each Goblin—one pre-destined woman who will complete him and make him whole. Three thousand years after the Fall, however, no Goblin has found a soul mate and none have been redeemed. Brends Duranov is convinced that Michael’s promise is just a myth—a red herring.

Eilor, a rogue Fallen, is a blood thirsty and scary villain who has an even more terrifying master. I'm always curious about authors and their villains. First, what makes Eilor a rogue? Then, is it difficult to write such evil especially since your scenes are quite graphic and in the moment? Does this creative ability ever make you wonder about the darkness of your imagination?

It’s funny, because I pretty much don’t watch any movies that aren’t intended for children (huge fan of Pixar!) because I simply can’t handle any graphic violence at all. I’ve never been a horror reader, either. I actually hadn’t realized that my villain was quite so creepy until my editor pointed it out and wondered if we should tone it down. Oh, and my sister actually changed her locks after beta-reading the next Bond book. Heh. So, apparently it’s not at all difficult… not sure what that says about me. Since I’d just finished Anne Bishop’s Black Jewels trilogy, I thought my villain was actually pretty tame. In all truth, I find the sexy bits difficult to write—go figure! Maybe I should consider a career switch to social deviant?

Swift change in topic here. Dorchester? How are you handling the change from mass market print to ebook?

It’s been quite an unexpected change! Like most of the Dorchester authors I know, I’d planned a marketing campaign around outreach to bookstores. Whoops. I found out about Dorchester’s switch to ebook only for 2010 about three weeks before Bond with Me released—I’d actually just been hounding the marketing coordinator for the print copies that were supposed to be going to various bloggers. Plus, now something that had seemed as straightforward as a book giveaway, becomes more complex. How do you give away an ebook (at least, without setting yourself up for super-easy piracy!)? So, it’s been a learning curve—but readers have been fabulous and I really appreciate the support. I’ve never read an ebook before, so it’s a whole new world for me! Fortunately, I should be able to have my cake and eat it, too—Bond with Me is currently available as an ebook only, but it will also be available in trade paperback in May 2011. So, for those of us who love our print books, there’s just a little delayed gratification…

And finally, what's next for Anne Marsh?

I’m absolutely delighted that the next books in both my Bond series and my Hunter’s Mate series will be published by Kensington Brava in early 2012. I’m actually putting the finishing touches on the next Bond book right now. Tentatively titled His Dark Bond, this is Zer’s story and he merits a very sexy, very stubborn soul mate of his own.

My Review:

The Plot:

The year is 2090 and after the devastation of the human wars left them subdued and vulnerable, the paranormals of the world emerged from their hiding places. Now, where the city of Moscow once stood, M City reigns and is controlled by the most powerful of paranormals: the Goblins. Once glorious angels, the Goblins were cast from the heavens by the Archangel Michael, their wings stripped, their golden beauty darkened and in the absence of their once glowing souls, they were paired with a soul sucking beast whose hunger knows no bounds. Brends Duranov is one such Fallen. G2 club owner, the enigmatic Brends holds court over the female humans who greedily offer up their souls for his all consuming pleasure. But only one woman snares his complete attention and her resistance only fuels the flames of his desire.

Mischka Baran is searching for her wild cousin Pellinor. Fearing that she made good on her threat to bond with one of the Fallen, Mischka will do whatever it takes to find Pell and convince her to come home. As far as Mischka's concerned, nothing is worth selling your soul for, especially to one of the detested paranormals. When her search leads her to G2 and Brends, Mischka's faced with the first man to ever shake up her temper and her hormones to mind numbing heights. He drives her crazy with his relentless pursuit and when he dangles his ability to locate her cousin as bait to the bond he desires, Mischka is determined to resist. That is until it's soon apparent that a blood thirsty, sociopathic rogue is after her and Pellinor. When a Goblin's beast overcomes its Fallen half, he goes rogue, hunting the streets for souls and blood. To be a target of a rogue's hunt can only lead to death without the right protection and the threat is severe enough to have Mischka reluctantly succumbing to Brends's bond.

Determined to bring down the rogue that's terrorizing his streets, picking off women and even one of his own Fallen brothers, Brends will do anything and use anyone to meet his goal. When it becomes obvious that his rogue is after Mischka and her cousin, he sees the chance to bait his trap. Knowing where Pellinor is, he offers Mischka the favor of taking her to her cousin in exchange for her becoming his bond mate. Bonding with Mischka allows Brends to feed off her soul while he grants her the endless pleasure she desires. Once the bond is witnessed and the swirling tattoos arise along the flesh of their wrists and forearms, Brends can bury deep within Mischka's mind, see into her soul and siphone off the richness of her emotions but most importantly he can keep her safe as she's to be the lure for his rogue. The only thing that Brends didn't prepare himself for is Mischka's tenacity, her need to control the situation as well as those around her including him. Her commands and snooty good girl behavior amuse Brends to no end and soon he's concentrating on turning her hot temper to boiling and breaking free the naughty girl deep within that craves release instead of focusing on the hunt. Unlike any bond mate he's ever had, Brends tries to resist Mischka's allure, but the harder he tries to ignore the affect she has, the more he finds himself relenting to her pull and the fact that he can't nor will he ever let Mischka go.

The Heroine:

Horrified by the injustices in the world, Mischka's determined to help and do what it takes to stop the rogue that's after her and her cousin. Knowing she's bait doesn't necessarily give her much cause for concern for Mischka will sacrifice herself first before she'd let anything bad happen to her cousin.

Having always been jealous of her cousin's wicked and wild ways, Mischka resents her need to always be the good girl, always steadfast and reliable, but with Brends driving her to distraction the naughty girl she's always wanted to be finally breaks free. Brends, while infuriating, strips Mischka free of her constricting good girl shields and in his arms, she doesn't have to worry about always doing what's right but instead she can do what brings her the most pleasure and that's Brends himself. When Brends releases her of the bond he ultimately manipulated her into, it doesn't take Mischka long to come to the conclusion that their bond was the best thing to ever happen to her.

The Hero:

Dark, mysterious, and practically leaking sensuality like a sieve, Brends has women all over falling at his feet, helpless in their desire. Sadly for them, Brends could care less. Mischka, at first just a means to an end, soon becomes the sole mantra of his thoughts. Her wants, her desires, and above all her safety become paramount to everything else. She changes his life in that for the first time in his three thousand years on Earth, Brends acts selflessly.

My Final Thoughts:

A tantalizing read, BOND WITH ME was good from beginning to end, however, the world building felt a bit unpolished with areas lacking information that I would loved to have understood. Then again, those areas can easily be explained in future books which has me looking forward to the continuation of the series.

However, there is one aspect of BOND WITH ME that I thought perhaps could have been completely left out of the book and that's Pellinor's bonding with another Fallen. In some respects it drew focus away from the main protagonists because their romance happens so early on an so erotically that at the time, I was craving more of them rather than Brends and Mischka. Also, while the affects of Pell's bonding are wonderfully shocking, it unfortunately made made the affects of Brends and Mischka's bonding a forgone conclusion and I hate knowing what's to come in my reads.

All in all, I enjoyed Brends and Mischka especially their first few meetings. The dialogue between the two is positively smoldering allowing brilliant sexual tension that made the rest of their relationship burn up the pages. While the resolution with regards to Brends's past isn't nearly cleared up, his bond with Mischka is cemented giving readers their coveted HEA.

Dark, gritty, and sinfully erotic, BOND WITH ME has the all the makings of a great paranormal series. And for fans of fallen angels, this is not a read that should be missed.

My Review:

The Plot:

Ivy needs to leave London. Now. And the only person that she can turn to is Mad Machen.

All of England knows Mad Machen. Once forced to join Rhys Trahaearn's infamous pirate crew, Machen later stayed willingly with the pirate captain as he brought down the Horde ending their two century tyrannical choke hold on London's citizens. While he may be notoriously mad, Ivy's witnessed a soft side of Mad Machen that makes her think she can trust safe passage aboard his ship. But when her appeal to ply her trade as a blacksmith in payment is met with denial, Ivy's desperation has her handing over her virginity. Large, fierce and intimidating, nothing terrifies Ivy more than joining Mad Machen in his bed but vacating London is paramount. Despite knowing that reneging on their bargain will result in Ivy being hunted for the rest of her days, when another opportunity to vacate the city presents itself that doesn't involve her giving up her virtue, Ivy seizes it and quickly makes tracks.

Eben wants Ivy desperately. Intending originally to court the beautiful red head honorably, Ivy's determination to run rips his sweet plans to shreds. Wouldn't have worked anyway. Eben has built his terrifying reputation as Mad Machen with purpose in order to do the right thing disguised as the wrong in order to keep him and his crew protected. Courting a woman would surely lead to a death sentence but when Ivy offers her lush and untouched body as payment, Eben can't refuse. And when she runs from their bargain, he hunts the New World in search of her.

When an underground slave trade erupts upon the seas utilizing Horde technology, Eben recognizes the threat and works to ruthlessly crush what is becoming known as the Black Guard. As their advanced tech calls for advanced weapons, the search is on for a blacksmith that can create a horrifying mechanical sea monster that can cripple the upstart trade to the four winds. When Eben's search leads him straight to Ivy, this time he'll not let her out of his sight or out of his bed.

The Heroine:

Loyal, caring, and hard working, Ivy does what she can with the lot she's been given. Gifted with an endless imagination and unparalleled engineering skills, Ivy brings a miraculous fluidity to her metal working. Truly her craft is an art, one that both the reader and Mad Machen become enamored with.

Ivy's fear of Mad Machen springs mostly from rumor but it's significant enough to make the thought of him terrifying. However, while trapped within the confines of his ship and the strength of his arms, she finds a startling but welcome feeling of safety and in that safety she finds release. Its more than beautiful to read as Ivy's inner carefree and playful nature blossoms in the face of Mad Machen.

The Hero:

Eben is so completely and totally besotted with Ivy that he can't control the need that erupts within him while in her presence. Knowing that his overwhelming passion frightens Ivy, his heart breaks at her fear and he ruthlessly resists his body's demands in an opportunity to slowly gain Ivy's trust.

Disguised by his pirate name and reputation, Mad Machen is really just a big ole softy. Sure he's killed and yes he'll kill again but he's not just a ruthless vigilante. He has a purpose, one that saves lives and if he has to act mad in order to continue on his mission, so be it. It's when his mad reputation collides with his need to love Ivy that Eben finds himself torn in two conflicting directions where choosing one will cost him the other.

My Thoughts:

Funny. When I told a dear friend that I finished and loved Brook's novella, her response was to laugh and claim that there's nothing by Brook I don't love. This made me pause. Am I so enamored with this author's stories that my reviewing capabilities are blinded by my bias? Suddenly I remembered that I haven't loved everything she's written and in fact this is the first novella of hers that I've given an A rating. Ha! Vindication.

I've always been a fan of sea faring stories where the hero and heroine are forced into such tension inducing confines that the heated awareness they share of the other is incredibly palpable. Soon you become addicted to every scene within the pirate captain's quarters as your hands grip the book with baited breath when you read that the sun has slipped below the horizon. Love it!

Rich with abundant detail, HERE THERE BE MONSTERS opens the window upon the mysterious new subgenre of Steampunk. Decidedly historical with an alternate reality twist, these technologically advanced Victorians will capture your undivided attention as they embark upon wild adventures. For romance readers that what something new, something that doesn't involve a new variety of shifters, but rather a novel that appeals to your inner damsel in distress, look no farther than Meljean Brook's new Steampunk series. And why not start it off with a bang in HERE THERE BE MONSTERS. Enjoy!

Hi everyone! Please welcome Rebecca Goings to Lovin' Me Some Romance. Today, Rebecca is interviewing her hero, Mackenzie Bishop, from her latest release MARK OF THE B*E*A*S*T*.

Guest Post:

Rebecca Goings: Hello everyone. My name is Rebecca Goings and I'm here today with my hero from my latest book, MARK OF THE B*E*A*S*T*. His name is Mackenzie Bishop--

Mackenzie: I prefer Mac!

Rebecca Goings: Okay, he prefers Mac, apparently. But I like Mackenzie. And I am your author.

Mac: I don't care.

Rebecca Goings: Has anyone ever told you you're infuriating sometimes?

Mac: *chuckles* I get that a lot, actually.

Rebecca Goings: I don't doubt it. Ever hear that phrase, "I brought you into this world...?"

Mac: Yeah, yeah. I've heard it. But you won't "take me out". You like me too damn much.

Rebecca Goings: *growls* You're lucky I don't kick your ass.

Mac: Go ahead. You'd enjoy it.

Rebecca Goings: *shuffles papers* *clears throat* All right, Mac, why don't you tell us about yourself?

Mac: Well, I'm a shifter, as everyone probably already knows. I'm a jaguar, engineered by B*E*A*S*T*. I escaped the compound in the Colorado Rockies after Noah and Rogan liberated it. But I don't remember anything past two years ago.

Rebecca Goings: You don't remember your life?

Mac: None of us do. Oh, we might remember flashes. But unless your mindwipe didn't quite take, you're not gonna fully remember.

Rebecca Goings: Tell us a bit about Robyn Groves. We first met her in Rogan's story, B*E*A*S*T* OF BURDEN.

Mac: Yeah, she's...well, she's special. I found her with Jet and Trevor out in the wilderness of Oregon. She'd escaped the second B*E*A*S*T* compound, and we raided that one with pleasure. But I had dibs on her. Damn, Robyn's one gorgeous lady.

Rebecca Goings: She is a shifter too, I take it?

Mac: A snowy owl.

Rebecca Goings: After you rescued her, things got a little heated in Wade's book, NATURE OF THE B*E*A*S*T*. Would you like to tell us about that?

Mac: Almost made love to her in the back of that Hummer. I could smell her desire all the way from Oregon to Texas. I'm surprised I waited so long to pounce on her. But we didn't go all the way, damn it, and she called me a coward.

Rebecca Goings: And that's the last time you saw her?

Mac: *eyes flashing* Yes. That insane bastard Dr. Lucian Carver abducted her back to the third B*E*A*S*T* compound. We believe it's somewhere in Florida. And I'm not going to stop until I find it.

Rebecca Goings: Good Lord, how many compounds does B*E*A*S*T* have?

Mac: Four--that we know of. One for every branch of the military.

Rebecca Goings: So there's one more compound out there somewhere? Do you know where it is?

Mac: Not a friggin' clue. But I don't give a rat's ass. I only care about getting Robyn back. Carver is torturing her. Ain't no way in hell I'm going to sit back and watch her get flayed alive.

Rebecca Goings: How long has she been gone?

Mac: Two months.

Rebecca Goings: Mac, how do you know she hasn't been mindwiped?

Mac: I don't. But I'll get her to remember me. I can get her motor runnin' like nobody's business. That is, right after I kill the assholes who took her memory in the first place.

Rebecca Goings: Well, I hope she will remember you, and be careful out there.

Mac: Don't you worry. I have a duffel full of serum and tranqs. No one's gonna get the best of me, especially not another shifter. Carver better keep one eye on his back. 'Cause I'm coming for him.

Rebecca Goings: Mac's book, MARK OF THE B*E*A*S*T*, is book IV of my popular B*E*A*S*T* series from Champagne Books. It releases on September 7th, 2010. For more information on this series, please visit http://www.rebeccagoings.com. Thank you so much for allowing myself and Mackenzie--

DRACULA, MY LOVE by Syrie James

Syrie James approaches Bram Stoker's classic Dracula with a breathtaking new perspective--as, for the first time, Mina Harker records the shocking story of her scandalous seduction and sexual rebirth.

Who is this young, magnetic, handsome, fascinating man? And how could one woman fall so completely under his spell?

Mina Harker is torn between two men. Struggling to hang on to the deep, pure love she's found within her marriage to her husband, Jonathan, she is inexorably drawn into a secret, passionate affair with a charismatic but dangerous lover. This haunted and haunting creature has awakened feelings and desires within her that she has never before known, which remake her as a woman.

Although everyone she knows fears Count Dracula and is pledged to destroy him, Mina sees a side to him that the others cannot: a tender, romantic side; a man who's taken full advantage of his gift of immortality to expand his mind and talents; a man who is deeply in love, and who may not be evil after all. Soon, they are connected in a way she never thought humanly possible.

Yet to surrender is surely madness, for to be with him could end her life. It may cost Mina all she holds dear, but to make her choice she must learn everything she can about the remarkable origins and unique, sensuous powers of this man, this exquisite monster, this ... Dracula!

MAYBE THIS TIME by Jennifer Crusie

Releases August 31, 2010

Andie Miller is ready to move on in life. She wants to marry her fiance and leave behind everything in her past, especially her ex-husband, North Archer. But when Andie tries to gain closure with him, he asks one final favor of her before they go their separate ways forever. A very distant cousin of his has died and left North as the guardian of two orphans who have driven out three nannies already, and things are getting worse. He needs a very special person to take care of the situation and he knows Andie can handle anything.

When Andie meets the two children she quickly realizes things are much worse than she feared. The place is a mess, the children, Carter and Alice, aren't your average delinquents, and the creepy old house where they live is being run by the worst housekeeper since Mrs. Danvers. What's worse, Andie's fiance thinks this is all a plan by North to get Andie back, and he may be right. Andie's dreams have been haunted by North since she arrived at the old house. And that's not the only haunting.

What follows is a hilarious adventure in exorcism, including a self-doubting parapsychologist, an annoyed medium, her Tarot-card reading mother, an avenging ex-mother-in-law, and, of course, her jealous fiance. And just when she thinks things couldn't get more complicated, North shows up on the doorstep making her wonder if maybe this time things could be different between them.

If Andie can just get rid of all the guests and ghosts, she's pretty sure she can save the kids, and herself, from the past. But fate might just have another thing in mind.

Cover Alert! NOCTURNE by Syrie James

NOCTURNE by Syrie James

Releases January 4, 2011

When Nicole Walker runs off the road in a blinding snowstorm after attending a friend's wedding at a Colorado ski resort, she wakes up to find herself stranded at the remote mountain house of a handsome, enigmatic stranger. She lives and works in a fast-paced, high tech world; he is cultured and modern yet lives a quiet life in self-imposed exile. They are both powerfully attracted to each other, but there are things about him that mystify her and fill her with apprehension - and Nicole can't shake the feeling that he really doesn't want her there.

She soon discovers that he's a famous, reclusive author, renowned for his highly detailed and authentic historical fiction, and fiercely protective of his privacy. No wonder he was so reluctant to take her in, Nicole thinks. But he hides a far darker secret. As the sexual tension between them builds, the clues mount up.

When Nicole realizes that her host is an ages-old vampire who thirsts for her blood, there's nowhere for her to run but the blizzard raging outside, and he's the only one who can save her life. By now there is no turning back; they have both fallen deeply in love, and share several passionate days together while waiting out the storm - a deep, meaningful, and dangerously seductive experience that will change them both forever.

Is this not the most hauntingly beautiful cover you've ever seen? There's kind of like an eerie Beauty and the Beast vibe with the blood read rose. And then there's the blood around it... Very creepy yet sinfully romantic.

Sigh... Don't you just want this book right now??

Review: THE HUNT by Anne Marsh

Review: THE HUNT by Anne Marsh
No matter how they try to flee, the virgins who enter the twisting tunnels of the Guardians are destined to be caught. Actually, most don’t try too hard. The stories of warriors who can take on Cat form, of lovers who can make a woman scream with pleasure, are just too enticing.

But Miu is no virgin, and she’s joined the Hunt with her own agenda. After she steals the moonstone necklace she’s been sent for, she has no intention of becoming some Cat’s tasty morsel. Too late she discovers these kitties have some deliciously kinky habits, and the dark hunter on her trail isn’t about to let impudent thievery go without punishment of the most exquisite kind.
Publisher: Dorchester Publishing Co.

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Single Title/Series: THE HUNT is the first in a series called Hunter's Mate. Next series installment to be released in 2012.

Cover Thoughts: Absolutely beautiful. I love how the cover conveys all the important aspects of the novel, especially the moon.

Why I Read It: THE HUNT has been on my radar for a while but I was finally prompted to dive in as preparation for my future interview with author Anne Marsh.

My Review:

The Plot:

The Guardians: mythical Werecats that guard an ancient temple high above the Valley. In exchange for their protection from a dark evil, the inhabitants of the Valley send their virgin daughters to the Guardians to participate in the annual Hunt. There the females scamper like white mice through the temple's dark catacombs awaiting the pounce of a Cat and the opportunity to slake their primal lust. Some of the women will stay and become mates while others will surface with an accompanying dowry. But some, sadly, will perish in the temple's dark depths for it's said that a great many of treasures lie deep below and any thief caught poaching will never again greet the surface. Miu is one such thief but with a desperate motive of life or death rather than mere greed.

Deliver the necklace or Lore dies. Period. Not an idle threat, Miu is more than desperate to do as told by the Master since her sister's life most definitely hangs in balance. Utilizing her moon daemon half as well as being armed with a map of the temple's catacombs, Miu runs in the Hunt with every intention of not getting caught by some randy Cat. She's here to pull a job and while circumstances conjure sexual thoughts, she'll just have to combat her suddenly raging hormones. That is until a particularly handsome mercenary decides she needs a bodyguard with extra benefits.

A Guardian on a mission, Jafar is sent by the temple's leader Amun Ra to discover what this particular little female is up to since it's obvious that she's not typical of the sort that participates in the Hunt. Sure enough, Jafar's little Miu leads him on a merry chase through the catacombs guided shockingly by a map thus igniting all sorts of dangerous questions. Who was able to create such a map of the heavily guarded temple? What is Miu searching for? And the most important question of all: why does Miu stir up a raging primal possession within his Cat? Seizing the opportunity to try and gain Miu's trust to procure the answers he seeks, Jafar doesn't correct her mistaken assumption that he's not a Guardian because he lacks the facial tattoos that claim his race.

When the Cat's out of the bag (pun intended) Miu feels betrayed but accepting of the fact that Jafar lied about being a Guardian. It's expected that all men lie and Jafar merely proved himself to be no exception. It's no surprise then to Miu either when Jafar bargains with her that in exchange for being his "docile" mate, he'll help her escape the temple and the Guardians with the necklace she seeks as well as save her sister. More than desperate, Miu resigns to her fate and accepts the bargain all the while telling herself that the deep seeded desire she feels for Jafar has no bearing whatsoever on her decision. Uh yeah, keeping telling yourself that sister! *wink* But truly, Jafar has a lot to make up for in Miu's eyes and he spends the rest of novel defying and destroying all of Miu's beliefs where males are concerned when finally, while gripping a dead body and suspended over a dark tube leading inevitably towards death, Miu accepts that she loves her Cat. But can that love save Jafar? The Guardians are after him for his betrayal. He chose Miu over them then proceeded to sully that betrayal even more when he stole their necklace. All of which he'll be mortally punished for if Miu doesn't come up with a plan quick, one that might miraculously save them both and grant them a much deserved Happily Ever After.

The Heroine:

A consistent character, Miu's bravery, stubbornness, and vital sarcasm never weavers from beginning to end. Instead her character growth boils down to trust. Bred on survival, the only being she trusts is herself. But when faced with Jafar, Miu is thrown through a loop. Her instincts war within her and while Jafar proves his loyalty time and again, Miu's heart demands the ultimate sacrifice. Interestingly enough, it comes down to Miu making that sacrifice. Not unlike the fact that no one has ever done anything for Miu without their own personal gain, Miu herself has operated under that same thought until Jafar. For the first time in her life she sacrifices herself for another, so that he - Jafar - can live.

The Hero:

Jafar is a gentleman through and through. Sure he's got some skeletons in the closet and yes he's killed countless times, all in the name of protection and the destruction of evil of course, but in essence, Jafar's just a good guy with a good heart.

While he's had some bad luck with the fairer sex, it doesn't hold him back from wanting to protect Miu. She immediately tugs at his heart strings and he's soon wrapped around her finger. Brave, courageous and determined, he never gives up on winning Miu's trust even though she makes him work damn hard for it. Any man willing to turn his back on his leader and his brothers, to give up the life he knows all to save one slip of a girl he barely knows makes him a definite keeper. Thank goodness Miu figures that out.

My Thoughts:

THE HUNT, while a superbly entertaining action romance, left some unfortunate confusion in its wake. Let's start with the setting, does it take place in some alternate Egyptian reality or on a seperate planet all together? My confusion on this knew no bounds and I blame it on the mention of such names as Amun Ra and Jafar as well as elemental magic and the sparkle of treasure. All of which painted an Aladdin landscape that I had diffuclty dispelling. Further research uncovered that yes, THE HUNT does take place on another planet. This was discovered after locating the single, one and only sentence of this fact mentioned in the first chapter...

Then there was the lack of information regarding character aspects, the most glaring being Jafar's lack of Guardian facial markings. I waited endlessly as for why but discovered that while its convenient for the plot, the reason was never unveiled to my knowledge. Obviously not too determinental to the plot but for me, the lack left lingering questions.

And finally, I was more than shocked that Miu risks her life time and again for her sister but in the end, we never meet her. Instead she's rapidly wisked away at a pivital moment with nary a description. Why? Why go through all this trouble and continuous near death experiences just to end the book with no resolution between the two women? This above everthing gave me the most pause.

In summary, THE HUNT is a fun and fast paced action adventure. Its a great summer vacation read that gives just the right amount of entertainment to hurry along an otherwise slow afternoon. As debuts go, its pretty damn good but for this seasoned reader and reviewer, the questions never ceased.

Publisher: St. Martin's Press

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Single Title/Series: MAYBE THIS TIME is a single title, stand alone novel.

Cover Thoughts: Super cute. There's a wonderfully spooky element to the floating title and tea cup that coincides nicely with the plot.

Why I Read It: I received an Advanced Review Copy from The Book Report Network and the publisher.

My Review:

The Plot:

Once upon a time, in a spooky centuries old mansion nestled deep in the woodlands of southern Ohio, there lived two young children and a neglectful housekeeper. They're alone this brother and sister with only each other to lean on and a couple of possessive ghosts to watch over them. But not for long for a dancing Bohemian angel is on the rescue.

Andromeda Miller is getting re-married. That is if she can finally shed the pestering thoughts of her ex-husband. Ten years ago Andie fell in love and married North Archer. Beautiful, intense and passionate, he swept her off her feet and held her beneath the melting heat of his hot focused stare. But when the death of North's uncle forced him to bear the brunt of the family's legal practice, Andie watched painfully as she disappeared wholly from his loving gaze and did the only thing she could to protect herself: she ran. Now, finally feeling safe with a man who openly worships her, Andie's ready to move on but before she can say yes to his proposal with her whole heart, she's driven to completely severe ties with North. Confrontation however does not yield closure and Andie, instead of saying goodbye forever, finds herself accepting a job as the new nanny for North's two young wards. Well, she never could say no to North especially when he plays dirty and offers to pay Andie ten thousand dollars a month plus expenses. But that familiar desire to run re-emerges when Andie's faced with the scariest house she's ever seen and civilization has never felt more far away.

There's little time for fear however when it becomes apparent that North's two young wards have been severely neglected. Sustained on a regular diet of boxed cheese macaroni and cereal by an indifferent housekeeper, Andie is introduced to two kids with sad, stoic faces. After loosing their mother, Alice, an eight-year-old sprite bedecked with spiky white blond hair and a neck loaded down with necklaces, and her brother Carter, a twelve-year-old adolescent who shines ablaze with the sharply handsome Archer features, were raised by their lovingly doting father who sadly died two years ago from a sudden heart attack. Circumstances seemed to be turning for the better however when their Aunt May came to live with them but an accident found their aunt dead in the mansion's surrounding moat. Finally, after a string of nannies are chased off the premises by supposedly "psychotic" children and even more ludicrously by psychotic ghosts, it's not hard to understand why Andie herself is met with two unimpressed kids that expect her to also run as though the hounds of Hell are after her. Well, Andie would certainly agree that the house their trapped in is Hell which is exactly why she has every intention of getting the kids out as soon as possible. That is if they'd let her...

With calm precision, Andie begins working out the kinks in Alice and Carter's life first by stocking a very bare kitchen and then taking care to put one pompous and poor excuse of a housekeeper, Mrs. Crumb, in her place. But as routine sets in and a slow trust begins to build between Andie and the kids, something very wrong begins to surface making Andie suspect that evil is afoot at Archer House. Assistance soon arrives in force however even though all weren't even close to being invited.

First there's Southie, North's ladies man of a younger brother who's developed a new fleeting hobby of ghost hunting. Bringing along his flavor of the month: the toothy Kelly O'Keefe, a news reporter who loves to highlight neglected kids but is currently masquerading as a ghost explorer to score a chance to ostracize the powerful Archers, comes along with the package deal of a one man camera crew and a parapsychologist name Dennis Graff. Costumed in a sloppy argyle sweater, he's to act as the counterpoint to O'Keefe's "piece" with his disbelief of ghosts of which he also claims to be an expert on. As if things couldn't get any more crowded, Andie's ex mother-in-law, the snooty ball-buster Lydia Archer, arrives to kick the slutty Kelly O'Keefe to the curb, save her hound dog of a son, protect North's wards, and give Andie a good dressing down that she's believed to have deserved for ten years. Next to knock is Flo, Andie's spiritual mother and Lydia's arch enemy. Of course sparks immediately fly between the two women only to find them forming a surprising tentative alliance in their determination to the vacate the premises of the nasty Kelly O'Keefe. Then there's Will, Andie's jealous fiance who's sexually frustrated and determined to bring Andie home. And finally there's Isolde Hammersmith, the medium who swiftly becomes arch enemies with Dennis, the non-believer. The only visitor there after that Andie is happy to see is North. And that's just the mortals...

As if Andie didn't have enough on her plate, with the arrival of North a war has begun brewing between her heart and her mind. Could they make things work a second time around? Well, regardless of the fate of their relationship, Andie is sure about one thing and that's her unwavering love for Alice and Carter. She's promised them forever and for the first time in her life, she's making a commitment.

The Heroine:

Andie is a no nonsense, take charge, confident women except when faced with North. He unlike anyone else can scramble her brain to mush with one look. He's her weakness and her heart.

For a woman who has no desire to be a mother, Andie embodies superb motherly instincts. Doting, patient and reliable she shields two scared children from the wrath of enemies both seen and unseen as though she birthed them herself. Flighty to fault with her life up until this point, Andie's heart never stood a chance when faced with two lonely and sad children. Fierce in her protection and generous with her soul, she becomes the mother she never wanted to be without hesitation or complaint.

The Hero:

North is an intense presence from the moment he walks onto the pages. Calm, grounded and steadfast, he's a man that does his duty with no questions asked. But there is one person that can ruffle his smooth feathers and that's Andie. Determined to make things right this time, he arrives at Archer House ready to prove to Andie that she and the kids are his top priority, not the firm. Never again will they feel lonely, neglected, or abandoned.

My Thoughts:

Quirky, fun, spooky and romantic, MAYBE THIS TIME takes you on one wild but endearing ride that won't be forgotten. While many a somber moment, the book is nicely balanced with laugh out loud scenes as well as a hint of creepy terror.

Within moments of opening the book, the kids will have stolen your heart, you'll be rooting for Andie and seriously drooling over North. Set in 1992 simply for the hell of it, get ready to walk down memory lane with a Walkman on your hip and a tape player in your car.

Unabashedly fun, MAYBE THIS TIME is good time to be had by all.

Publisher: Razorbill, An Imprint of Penguin Group (USA) Inc.

Genre: Young Adult

Single Title/Series: THE ETERNAL ONES is a stand alone novel.

Cover Thoughts: I'm really lovin' the simplicity of the cover and how it focuses entirely on the very important aspect of continuity which is portrayed by the symbol of the snake eating its tail. Also, the blood red background provides a great representation of the suspense plot and the evil that sinks its claws in from page one. Very striking and interesting without all the distracting fluff of other Young Adult covers.

Why I Read It: I received an Advanced Review Copy from the publisher.

My Review:

An organization specializing in reincarnation, The Ouroboros Society claims that a soul is repeatedly returned to Earth when it clamors to imbibe once again upon a deeply ingrained addiction such as greed, lust, or power. In some cases the addiction may even be love. For seventeen-year-old Haven Moore, that addiction is Ethan Evans.

Surviving for the last eight years under grueling supervision in the small town of Snope City, Tennessee, Haven Moore is a virtual prisoner longing to break out and break free specifically to New York City and Ethan Evans, the boy who's continuously consumed her thoughts since childhood. But despite the urban city's overwhelming pull upon her soul, Haven's forced under the hawk-eyed watch of her grandmother and guardian, Imogene, to resist. Instead Haven tries her best to keep her thoughts and prayers on God with the hope of preventing the fainting spells that conjure a past life and love with Ethan. All occur with amazingly rich clarity but sadly they all create detrimental repercussions.

Reincarnation is a concept unbelieved, unspoken and untaught in Snope City and while a part of Haven feels that the things she knows can only be attributed to the remembrance of a past life, her instincts are smothered by so many who believe her strange knowledge to be the work of the devil. Already an ostracized outcast, Haven snaps a desperate stranglehold on her visions, submerging them so deep within her heart that she even manages to stop them for a time. But when a rare glance at the TV features New York City play boy, Iain Morrow, Haven knows instinctively that he's Ethan Evans reborn. Overcome by a tsunami wave of emotions, Haven becomes inundated with the suppressed yearnings she'd believed - hoped - were long gone, buried and denied. Now, as overwhelming need floods her soul with aching remembrance, her desperation for Ethan ignites a flaming drive to find him once and for all and this time the urge won't be ignored.

Escaping to New York City and locating Iain Morrow is surprisingly easy for Haven but trusting him proves to be more than difficult. While Iain sweeps her off her feet, re-establishing a grand love that he claims extends as far back as two thousand years, Haven is more then wary of the overwhelming emotions she's experiencing. It's a love so adult, so deep and ancient that Haven can't grapple with the frightening power it wields upon her soul. Meanwhile, Iain is so confident and the way he's proven their past love is beyond concrete yet Haven's instincts are firing with the suspicion that he's hiding something. As the city ignites more and more visions of her past life in New York with Ethan - then ninety years ago as a woman named Constance - Haven begins to suspect that she's in close and immediate danger with all signs pointing to Iain. It soon becomes alarmingly clear that perhaps there's more to Constance's and her soul's determination that Haven locate Ethan and it may have nothing to do with love but more to do with murder.

My Thoughts:

THE ETERNAL ONES is written in third person from Haven's point of view which will make readers whom may be disgruntled with first person narrative, very happy. The novel starts with an immediate bang but fizzles to a crawl as the author dedicates nearly half the book to Haven's time in Snope City, establishing her already blooming distrust in herself and Ethan Evans whom she has yet to even meet. And while Haven's indecision and her naive trust in those that obviously intend to do harm is frustrating, its a bonus to the genre in that it was a realistic story telling from an adolescent. Bravo Ms. Miller! And fortunately, the odd loose ends of the first half of the book are tidied up nicely in the end which was something I both appreciated and applauded. But its the second half of the novel that propels the story to incredible heights of intrigue, despiration and evil sealing my investment and interest.

What surprised me most about THE ETERNAL ONES is the depth of the underlying sinister evil that permeates the novel from beginning to end. Like black oozing tentacles, this evil is allowed to seep into every nook and cranny of the plot culminating into a shocking finale that is both decidedly delicate in its presentation as it is terrifying with its gruesome purpose. Miraculously this evil succeeded in reeling in my trust as well as it dispelling it thereby aligning me nicely with Haven's plight.

A fantastic debut that's sure to appeal to multi-genre romance lovers, if you're looking for only one Young Adult novel to read this year, THE ETERNAL ONES is it and should definitely not be missed.

DARK ORACLE by Alayna Williams
TARA SHERIDAN HAS A GIFT . . . AND IT ALMOST KILLED HER.

As a criminal profiler, Tara used science and her intuitive skill at Tarot card divination to track down the dangerous and depraved, including the serial killer who left her scarred from head to toe. Since that savage attack, Tara has been a recluse. But now an ancient secret society known as Delphi's Daughters has asked for her help in locating missing scientist Lowell Magnusson. And Tara, armed with her Tarot deck, her .38, and a stack of misgivings, agrees to try.

Tara immediately senses there is far more at stake than one man's life. At his government lab in the New Mexico desert, Magnusson had developed groundbreaking technology with terrifying potential. Working alongside the brusque but charismatic agent Harry Li, Tara discovers that Magnusson's daughter, Cassie, has knowledge that makes her a target too. The more Tara sees into the future, the more there is to fear. She knows she has to protect Cassie. But there may be no way to protect herself - from the enemies circling around her, or from the long-buried powers stirring to life within. . . .

My Review:

The Plot:

Broken and isolated in self-imposed exile, Tara Sheridan haunts her remote cabin in the back woods of Tennessee burdened by nightmares and loneliness. Once a renowned criminal profiler, an unfortunate stint under the thumb of a twisted serial killer left her with white striated scars that traverse both her body and her mind leaving her glowing career in shreds. Gifted with an affinity for Tarot card divination, Tara's cards once predicted the mind and path of the killers she sought allowing her the long-time desired ability to help people.  But the cards care not for Tara after having led her to the nightmare fate that she narrowly escaped. Love and hate wars within Tara as her relationship with her cards has long been one of resigned acceptance. Now Delphi's Daughters, a matriarchal cult society that can trace their lineage to the original Oracle of Delphi and the very same society that Tara continually strives to separate herself from since childhood, is knocking on her door desperate for her help. The balance of power has tilted with global destruction a fate foreseen making the location of a missing scientist a paramount issue to Delphi's Daughters.

Harnessing an elusive energy particle known as dark matter, missing scientist Dr. Lowell Magnusson has created an endless energy source at a time of crisis, one that could power the world. However, this power can also be vastly affective as a weapon and it appears that the government is leaning hard in this direction, so hard in fact that it appears that Magnusson destroyed his life's work to avoid this very outcome. But where is Dr. Magnusson? There are three possibilities. One, Magnusson destroyed his work in the giant explosion that successfully wiped away any ability to recreate it, then disappeared. Two, Magnusson destroyed his work as with possibility one but was kidnapped. And finally three, Magnusson died in the explosion.  Feeling the pull of Magnusson's picture left with Tara by a sister oracle, she reads the cards after a long time of abstinence and falls seamlessly into a familiar rhythm. Strings pulled, Tara lands in New Mexico acting as a consultant for the Department of Justice and encounters the handsome Agent Harry Li.

Relationships have never been easy for Tara. Her affinity with the cards is one that others would scoff at and probably ostracize her for if known. Overly protective of her ability, Tara is generally a mystery to others and now that mystery is more crucial then ever. She's broken. Her body, heart and mind will never be the same for Tara feels the debilitating effects of her brokenness straight through to her soul. But Harry, her complete opposite in every way, opens an unfurling fascination deep within her as they struggle to unravel the mystery of Magnusson's disappearance. Quickly surrounded by military personal that cannot be trusted, Tara and Harry begin a journey in search of the truth while taking on the protection of Cassie Magnusson, Dr. Magnusson's daughter. There are those that are so desperate to seize Magnusson's work on dark matter that nothing will stop them, not even the scientist's innocent daughter. With enemies circling from numerous fronts, Tara and Harry must succeed for failure means handing over the tools to destroy the world.

The Heroine:

Tara holds her own as the center of this complex swirling plot because she's by far the most interesting aspect of the novel. Nothing competes with this unique and intriguing heroine. As a reader, you want to know what she'll do next as obstacle after obstacle is slammed in her path.

Armed with a combination of keen intelligence and highly developed intuition, Tara disentangles and strips the emotional guards of others with little effort. She's a problem solver, a person that can align all the pieces of a convoluted puzzle using fascinating methods that run counter to merely cold hard logic. In DARK ORACLE, Tara succeeds in showing the reader that this area of her character has not been damaged by the nightmare she's faced and survived but rather this is her journey to shedding the dark imprint that was left. Tara doesn't realize the extent of her self-imposed mourning until faced with the logical Harry Li. He's her counter opposite in every way but there's a vital connection between them that gently forces Tara to breathe again, to emotionally and physically feel life again. He also propels Tara to lead with her heart and unveil the scars that mangle her from head to toe as well as the deep inner scars that burden her with darkness. As Harry shines a brilliant healing light into Tara's needy soul, he gives her the strength to finally live life once again.

The Hero:

Harry, while integral to Tara's character development, DARK ORACLE isn't necessarily his story. Instead he serves as a wonderful foil for Tara as the logical, magic scoffing character allowing the reader to explore his or her own skepticism via Harry's. In essence, he forces Tara to reveal that much more about her inner fears of not only what people think of her, but fears with relationships. He gives her the opportunity to finally accept who she is with his own acceptance making Tara that much more stronger. It's a compelling partnership. Of course Tara also facilitates growth within Harry. He learns that some rules are meant to be broken in order to save lives as well as the fact that different approaches to a problem can yield unimaginable answers. Harry breaks the mold for Tara and while this terrifies him at some level, she's more than worth it.

My Thoughts:

A stunning collaboration of science and fantasy, DARK ORACLE is an unusual high stakes ride of government cover ups and mythological magic. While one would expect the blend to be jarring, its actually quite seamless making the novel interesting from beginning to end.

Embodying a rich epic feel, Tara and Harry traverse dozens of obstacles not only in search of the truth but also within their own inner obstacles allowing vast and blatant character growth. However, with the secondary love plot playing such a dynamic role in Tara's healing, I would have liked to have seen more chemistry, more sexual tension. It would have pushed this book from good to stellar. But the research is still phenomenal in both the science and magical aspects.

DARK ORACLE has all the makings of a good series start. For Urban Fantasy readers wanting to jump on an up and coming thrill ride, hail a ticket fast and get ready to hang on!
