**********************************************************

My Interview:

Hello everyone, please welcome author Lila DiPasqua to Lovin' Me Some Romance!

First, I'd like to congratulate you on your debut release with Berkley, AWAKENED BY A KISS! Yay! How does it feel to be a published author? Can you tell us a little bit about your road to publication?

Thanks so much! I’m thrilled to be here! I can’t believe my debut novel hits the shelves in just over a week – Aug. 3rd! It’s a life-long dream come true. I’m just so excited to share this book with readers. My characters won’t exist solely in my computer anymore!

As for my road to publication, well, it took a bit of a detour for a while. I got married and had three kids in under four years. I just couldn’t write in those days. I was too busy pulling out toys from under the couch and looking for Barbie’s missing shoes. When my youngest started school, I finally got serious about pursuing publication. It took about six years before I landed an amazing agent and sold to Berkley.

After having read your collection of fairy tale novellas in ABAK, I was surprised to find that the stories didn't necessarily revolve structurally around the fairy tales themselves but rather they felt more to be an inspiration. What came first? The fairy tale or your own tale of these lusciously layered characters?

The fairy tales came first. The original stories of Sleeping Beauty, Puss in Boots and Little Red Riding Hood were, for the most part, pretty dark and not very sexy. For example, in Sleeping Beauty, Disney left off the part after Sleeping Beauty marries Prince Charming. He goes away for a time and his mother decides that she not only wants Sleeping Beauty and her two children killed, but she wants to eat them for dinner. Prince Charming returns in time to save his family, and his mother jumps into the pot of boiling water herself. Yup, as I said, not exactly a sexy tale. :)

I took elements that people are familiar with in each fairy tale – for example, the curse placed on Sleeping Beauty at her christening, Sleeping Beauty being awakened by a kiss ---and I gave the tale my own steamy twist --- I made the hero Sleeping Beau. He had an incident occur at his christening similar to a curse. He didn’t prick his finger at fifteen, but at fifteen, he did use his prick…ahem…well, you’ll have to read the story. Years later, it was my heroine, Catherine, who sneaks into his room after a masquerade ball and awakens him with a sensuous kiss. Because in the original tale, Sleeping Beauty was a princess, I made Adrien the bastard son of the King (as close to being a prince as I could get.) Luckily, Louis XIV had had a number of illegitimate children in his lifetime. He legitimized them and they were treated like royalty.

I did the same thing to the other two fairy tales; I used the familiar elements of the stories, and gave them my own sensual spin.

I love how you provided a historical tidbit on Charles Perrault, the author of the fairy tales that your novellas are based on. The additional pages dedicated to the moral of each tale was just as lovely, however, I'm not the greatest at deciphering meanings from poems. Would you mind giving a quick introduction to each of your fairy tales in the collection as well as their morals?

Absolutely! It’s probably best summarized by the book blurb:

Sleeping Beau: Five years ago, notorious rake Adrien d'Aspe, Marquis de Beaulain, was awakened by a sensuous kiss-and experienced a night of raw ecstasy that was branded into his memory. Years later, he spots his mysterious seductress-and this time, he has no intention of letting her go...

Little Red Writing: Nicolas de Savignac, Comte de Lambelle, has been assigned by the King to uncover the secret identity of the author writing scandalous stories about powerful courtiers. He never expected his investigation would lead to his grandmother's house, or to a ravishing woman who would stir his deepest hunger...

Bewitching in Boots: Elisabeth de Roussel, daughter of the King, is accustomed to getting what she wants-and she wants Tristan de Tiersonnier, Comte de Saint-Marcel, an ex-commander of the King's private Guard. A recent injury has forced Tristan to leave his distinguished position, but Elisabeth is determined to make him see he's every bit the man he once was-and more than man enough for her...

As to the morals, I couldn’t resist adding them. Charles Perrault was the creator of The Tales of Mother Goose. He wrote down folklore that had been retold verbally for generations, and added morals to the stories. He wrote Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood etc.

His moral for Sleeping Beauty is basically: A love you have to wait for is just as passionate as a whirlwind relationship. That none of the passion is lost simply because you have to wait. Adrien and Catherine had to wait five long years for their love.

Little Red Riding Hood – That moral is fun! It’s a warning to young girls/women to be careful and not taken in by a smooth-talking man. Perrault likens such a man to a wolf. Little Red Riding Hood is, after all, a tale of seduction. My hero, Nicolas has earned the nickname, le loup “the wolf” because of his cunning. His mission for the King is to catch the mysterious writer Gilbert Leduc. He knows Leduc is one of the sisters staying at his grandmother’s house and he’s willing to seduce Anne in order to learn the identity of the writer. Nicolas is definitely a wolf in sheep’s clothing, bent on taking down Leduc…that is until he’s torn between love and duty.

Puss in Boots – In this moral Perrault suggests that one should study a man who’s won the heart of a princess. Anyone who earns himself such a notable wife and vastly improves his lot in life is someone worth emulating. Tristan, the ex-commander of the King’s private Guard, most definitely has the heart of the favorite daughter of the King. Too bad it’s the last thing he wants. He simply needs some amorous persuasion to show him how lucky his is.

The novella. Notorious for being difficult reads for lovers of full length novels. How is the novella appealing to you as reader verses as an author? How does the writing process differ, if at all, from a full length novel?

I love reading novellas as much as I love writing them. As a reader, I have many anthologies I adore. Sometimes I’m just in the mood for something shorter. Novellas do the trick. They’re blasts of pure entertainment! With a novella, you can still get a story and characters with depth. Those are exactly the kind of novellas I like to read and the very sort of novellas I set out to write in AWAKENED BY A KISS. In a novella, you still have to create likeable characters that are well-rounded, build their world and escalate the conflict around them until the climax of the story.

You just have to accomplish all that with fewer words.

I read in your wonderful interview at Smexy Books, that your husband was not only a big inspiration for your heroes, but he assisted you on the male perspective. How do you approach the male POV? While this may be an obvious answer, is it completely different from the female? Which one is more challenging?

I do sometimes use aspects of my husband and weave them into my heroes. It’s true! My husband enjoys reading my work and in reference to the male POV, he’s told me that I think just like a man. I take that as a compliment. I love writing in the male POV. Because women think differently then men, it’s definitely different writing in the female POV. I don’t find one POV more challenging than another. If you really know your characters, then you know how they think and feel.

Your tales are happily on the super steamy side. As a reader, I love experiencing character growth in my heroes and heroines during sensual scenes and I reveled in the fact that your stories provided this beautifully. It all read as very natural and flowing when in fact, this area can be quite difficult for writers. Would you say that these are your favorite scenes to write or are they the most stressful?

Thank you for the lovely compliment. In answer to your question I’d say, both! I really do enjoy writing the steamier scenes, but they usually take me a little longer than the other scenes. I think they’re really important, and so I take my time with them.

Related to the above question, with erotic tales such as yours, the balance of sex and plot is vital. I've read too many erotic books to count that tip the scales too heavily towards the erotic and too little on the plot. How do you maintain this balance as a writer? With such a limited page count, does it then become even more of a challenge?

When you only have 30,000 words to tell a story, every scene has to advance the story. Including the sex scenes. I think that’s how you maintain a balance – by using the love scenes to advance the plot. I use my love scenes not only to demonstrate how the hero and heroine feel about each other at that particular junction of the story, but to heighten the conflict as well. My sex scenes are layered and if you skip them in my books, you’re going to miss stuff. I guarantee that in my love scenes, more than just sex is happening between the hero and heroine. I never write a sex scene just for the sake of having a hot scene.

I absolutely loved the French setting of your collection. While I certainly love my England based historical romances, your setting provided a wonderfully refreshing atmosphere. The glossary, by the way, was a very helpful addition. Why France?

Because 17th century France was when and where Charles Perrault lived! I wanted to bring the reader to the very place and time when the genre of fairy tale was born. Anyone who loves Regency England will adore this setting. It has all of the same elements we love in Regencies! Handsome lords and lovely ladies, ballrooms, masquerade balls and well, plenty of scandalous behavior – especially when the King of France was a lusty man with a court that was as salacious as their monarch.

Of the three tales in your AWAKENED BY A KISS collection, do you have a favorite? If so, why? Also, which of the three fairy tales is your favorite and why?

I’m afraid I don’t have a favorite story. It’s like trying to pick which of your children you love more. I love each story equally and for different reasons.

Finally, what's next for Lila DiPasqua?

In three short months, THE PRINCESS IN HIS BED hits the shelves! Another collection of Fiery Tales! Three classic fairy tales, The Ugly Duckling, The Emperor’s New Clothes and The Princess and the Pea are scandalously retold and renamed, The Lovely Duckling, The Marquis’ New Clothes, and The Princess and the Diamonds.

I did a lot of research for this book. My lovely heroine in The Lovely Duckling is a burn victim. My sinfully seductive hero in The Marquis’ New Clothes is a 17th c. engineer and expert in science. And my yummy hero in The Princess and the Diamonds is intent on helping the King enforce his ban on an illegal card game. The game tales on high stakes when the King’s own daughter has sneaked in to play!

Plus, I made a new sale to Berkley. A full-length Fiery Tales will be released 2011! Tentative date, October. Based on one classic fairy tale, it’s going to be steamy and romantic and…well, I can’t wait for this book!

My Review:

Novella #1: SLEEPING BEAU

For five long tormented years, Adrien Christophe d'Aspe de Bourbon, Marquis de Beaulain has been assailed by haunting erotic dreams of the woman who once drugged him then went on to grant him the most memorable sexual escapade of his life. Leaving with the dawn, he never learned her identity and though he searched, she was never found. Now in the present, Adrien's emotional and heartbroken younger half-sister pleads with him to seduce the woman that has stolen her lover's heart.  Exasperated by his sister's immature demands and foolish stubbornness to cling to a man that obviously no longer wants her, Adrien is inclined to say no until he glimpses the woman in question. It's her, his midnight temptress and this time he'll not allow her escape without giving him the answers to the questions that have haunted him for five endless years.

Catherine de Villecourt is weeks from securing a life that will finally grant her the contentment that has thus far succeeded to eluded her. Married off to her now late husband, a man who didn't love her, Catherine did all she could to prevent the nuptials even going to the extent of sullying her virginity, but to no avail. While her upcoming marriage is once again a loveless one, the chance for children and a family is all she requires. But Catherine may be looking at a life in prison when she's cornered by the man she drugged with an aphrodisiac all those years ago. The sweet memories of their love making have sustained her heart all this time but with his identity finally revealed as one of the illegitimate sons of the King, her actions, if learned, could very easily find Catherine incarcerated.

While Catherine persists in denying she was the lady that seduced Adrien all those nights ago, he'll not give up. Hoping to strike a mutually beneficial agreement, Catherine propositions Adrien by granting him one week as his mistress in exchange for his silence. Foolishly both hope to purge the other from their lustful thoughts but as one sinful encounter after another leads them quickly towards week's end, their hearts soon prove to be in grave danger. But with Catherine betrothed to another and Adrien hesitant to make a commitment, their affair might end with heartache after all.

My Thoughts:

SLEEPING BEAU resonated strongly with my reader heart. The sinfully erotic content, sharp language, and forbidden passion reminded me greatly of Lisa Valdez and her debut release, PASSION. From beginning to end, I loved this novella.

Adrien is a delicious hero. His quick and befuddling possessiveness where Catherine's concerned is both entertaining and heart pounding to read. He wants her so badly and while he hopes to draw out every moment of their short affair, Catherine manages to push his control to the limit every time.

I enjoyed Catherine as well. She's so desperate for love yet she's managed to put a stranglehold on her desires. Both of these characters have simply been moving with the waves of time until they're once again faced with each other. It's only in that moment that they finally awake and become the people they were meant to be.

My Review:

Novella #2: LITTLE RED WRITING

Nicolas de Savignac, Comte de Lambell is consumed by a single driving goal to become Captain of the King's Guard and he'll use any means necessary to achieve it. Sent on a mission to locate and arrest Gilbert Leduc, author of illegal publishing's that paint the male French aristocracy in an unfavorable light, Nicolas tracks the notorious author to his estranged grandmother's residence. Arranging a tedious diversion for his grandmother that quickly takes her away, Nicolas promptly makes his acquaintance with the three sisters residing at the estate with the rouse that he wishes to learn more of the grandmother he's never met. Everything is soon going to plan along with a surprising yet lovely diversion in the form Anne de Vignon and the mutual lust that ignites between them.

Anne is more than wary of Nicolas but he's the grandson of her patroness and to be rude would speak poorly of her high esteem for the Comtesse de Cottineau. Besides, Gilbert Leduc is more than safe for no one has been able to trace him much less believe that a couple of girls are in fact the popular author. Women need the outlet that Leduc provides them. In a world where men have complete and utter control, the grievances that women bear are too great. At least Leduc can provide them a moment to shine light on the oppressive behavior of their men. No, what Anne is more wary of is the uncontainable desire within her soul that burns for Nicolas. Having only known neglect in a man's arms, Anne recognizes the pleasure that Nicolas could provide her. What's the harm in taking a lover especially when he's as sinfully beautiful as Nicolas?

Where Nicolas once thought that sleeping Anne, who very well may involved with Gilbert Leduc, wouldn't ever be a problem, now guilt assails him. He's falling for Anne and as time whittles away and his avoidance of his investigation becomes a crushing burden that he must see through, Nicolas makes the decision to tell Anne of his love. While he must soon make his arrest whether it be Anne or one of her sisters, he knows that one of them is Leduc but he will do all that he can to keep Anne out of prison. He'll even risk his dream of becoming Captain of the Guard.

My Thoughts:

The most complex of the three novellas, LITTLE RED WRITING is a roller coaster of intensities. While of course you dislike Nicolas immensely at the beginning, his heart's turmoil soon puts you on the edge as you suffer along with him knowing that in the end, he's still bound by his royal obligations. There is also gratification in reading of a selfish man falling victim to his own arrogance. The brilliance is in the writing however in that you're soon rooting for Nicolas with the hopes that he'll reach his Happily Ever After.

Anne, conversely, is lovely from beginning to end. I loved her devotion to her sisters and the need she felt to help women. While perhaps it might not have been the best avenue to accomplish the latter with Gilbert Leduc, I enjoyed the light that was shown on the injustices towards women.

My Review:

Novella #3: BEWITCHING IN BOOTS

Elisabeth de Roussel, the favored daughter of the King, is wholly enamored by the King's Captain of the Guard, Tristan de Tiersonnier. Ever since the moment she first clapped eyes on his stunningly strong physique and piercing gaze, she's wanted to be the sole recipient of his heated regard and lusty embrace. After his callus dismal for an injury obtained from doing his duty and protecting the King, Elisabeth knows that he's been dealt a grave injustice. But there's more to Elisabeth's desire then to just see Tristan righteously reinstated, she wants him for herself. Knowing that her father is once again planning to marry her off, this time she'll have more of a say as to whom. Planning the seduction of a life time, Elisabeth sets off for Tristan's chateau with every intention of claiming him for good or to at least purge her flaming desire once and for all.

The last person in the world that Tristan wishes to see is Elisabeth and her royal entourage. His dismissal as the Captain of the Guard has left him bitter and depressed as he haunts his chateau. Solitude is what he craves not the favored daughter of the King. But when the beauty alights from her carriage clad scandalously in gripping breeches and skin hugging boots, all of Tristan's thoughts head directly south. Determined to scare her from his premises, he threatens her with silken scarves and complete domination. (Uhhh yeah, like who would say no to that? Thankfully not our heroine)

Forever in control, Elisabeth is at first frightened to let down her guard in front of Tristan. Trained to always withhold emotion whilst at court, Elisabeth doesn't know how to express herself with words. Soon, however, she finds release in Tristan's hold. But when she gambles with her future in attempt to secure her marriage to Tristan, her scheming ways may finally succeed in dumping her on the loosing end.

My Thoughts:

BEWITCHING IN BOOTS is the most erotic of the three novellas, in my opinion, making it a delightful stellar of a finale.

First, I love a broken hero, especially a physically broken hero. Tristan embodies all that and more but what I loved above all else, is his ability to keep his pride from clouding his judgement. Too many times I've read of the prideful yet broken hero and his crushing ability to hurt his heroine and it was wholly refreshing to find that in this novella, that wasn't the case.

Normally, a managing female such as Elisabeth wouldn't necessarily be my favorite but what I discovered along with Tristan is that she was a much needed flame that re lit Tristan's dismal life. She was perfect for him.

A-

AWAKENED BY A KISS is a sinfully erotic collection of multi-layered plots and characters that's sure to please. One certainly doesn't need to be familiar with the fairy tales that inspire these romances in order to fall head-over-heels in love for its the collection of heroes and heroines that make this compilation so marvellously entertaining. Readers yearning for a lusciously romantic diversion will find all that in more with this first edition in Lila DiPasqua's Fiery Tales Collection.

Why I Read It: The Guardian Series is Series #1 for VFG.

My Review:

The Plot:

A story of two broken and fundamentally flawed characters, DEMON BLOOD both resolves and perpetuates numerous epic plot arcs as these two shattered souls collide and eventually converge into one dynamic pairing. Driven by a vengeful purpose, a Guardian bravely reaches out to the vampire that has unknowingly held her heart for a century despite the rejection her touch is sure to face since its both very much unwanted and felt to be wholly undeserved.

A burning need for revenge is all that fires Deacon's eternal breath. Having gambled and lost with a demon whom held his vampire community and two vivacious consorts hostage, Deacon betrayed the Guardians in exchange for their safety thereby igniting the shocking plot altering events of DEMON FORGED. Now all that remains from Deacon's efforts is a pile of ash and a guilt ridden shell of the leader he once was. Living purely for revenge and with nothing to loose, Deacon awakes at each sunset with the single driving desire to exterminate each and every demon as pay back for the annihilation they wreaked upon those he swore to protect and failed.

Having no hope nor want of redemption, Deacon welcomes his new found position as a pariah, an outcast, shunned and condemned after his betrayal travels throughout the world yet nothing can eclipse his own poisonous self-hatred. But when the next demon on his list finds Deacon fatefully aligned with a beautiful Guardian's own vengeful mission, redemption might just find him.

Held for a year and a half as an endless blood fount for a group of nosferatu, Rosalia was released to find her family destroyed. For centuries, Rosalia cultivated her own vampire family in Rome while simultaneously protecting Europe from her tyrannical vampire brother. Raised by a demon masquerading as their father, Rosalia sacrificed herself to save a convent and became a Guardian while her brother suffered under the demon's corruption and willingly became a vampire. Filled with hope after her transformation, Rosalia sought to save her brother's corrupted soul but instead made a life as a Guardian protecting those in her brother's cruel path. Now with no family to care for and no brother to shield, Rosalia is left with nothing but her Guardian role and the need for vengeance within her heart.

When a daring plan takes shape in her mind, Rosalia conjures a very real possibility of simultaneously achieving vengeance for her murdered family as well as provide an opportunity for the Guardians to eliminate a lethal threat. But her plan must include Deacon for his fall within the vampire communities at the behest of a demon allows her the perfect set up. Now she needs only to convince him.

The Hero:

Bucking fiercely under any outside control after having been vilely manipulated by demons, Deacon pushes strongly against Rosalia's determination that he help with her mission. She hopes to use his fall from respected leader to stigma and eradicate two common enemies. Deacon couldn't care less for her reasons, he only wishes to remain on the path he's set for himself and he's determined to hurt Rosalia as much as necessary for her to understand.

Broken, beaten, grief-stricken, and guilt-ridden, Deacon's self-loathing poisons his thoughts where Rosalia's concerned. Feeling that his self worth is at zero, he can't possibly rationalize much less believe that he could and has won the love of this beautiful Guardian. Time and again he throws Rosalia's tenderness and love out his heart's window, convincing himself that her inherent need to repay another is the singular driving force leading her touch.

It's only when Deacon's soul has reached rock bottom that he finally believes Rosalia's love but by that point, it's too little too late.

The Heroine:

Rosalia understands Deacon better then he himself and while she knows the root to the poison he spews, it doesn't make the pain of his rejection hurt any less.

Virtually forgotten, Rosalia isn't well known by her fellow Guardians. A master strategist, she wraps herself in the shadow of her Gift, gathering and mentally cataloging immense data on hundreds of beings. Silently she influences and orchestrates outcomes with little to no one being the wiser. This managing nature cascades through to her personal relationships where the need to help those she loves becomes a consuming force, a driving need, making her the supreme giver. All in all, a lonely existence for nobody ever thinks to offer Rosalia their help, much less their love in return. Deacon is the first to notice this neglect and strives to take her burdens in the only way he knows how but if he's incapable of offering what Rosalia desires most - his heart - then she's left with little recourse but to walk away.

My Thoughts:

DEMON BLOOD required a slower pacing to unravel the vast complexities of its broken hero and flawed heroine. Deacon isn't the easiest hero to fall in love with. His guilt and self-hatred are like a rotting poison deep within his soul, clouding his thoughts and hindering his reactions. The reader must be consistently reminded of the reasons for his hurtful behavior or we may be inclined to give up on him. Thankfully, Ms. Brook does a wonderful job shedding light not just on Deacon's tarnished heart but also its inherent strength which miraculously hasn't diminished despite his desire for it to shrivel up and die.

While Deacon wears his anger openly on his sleeve, Rosalia is a much more difficult character to crack. Thickly layered with defenses, she shields her emotions with such strength that most have no idea of the pain she suffers as well as the burdens she bears. She's a mothering female, one that will not stop helping others even if that help is unwanted or undeserved, Rosalia will still find a why to exert her influence.

Also, Rosalia's strategist skills are beyond amazing. While Deacon focuses singularly on a one man demon extermination mission, Rosalia orchestrates not only a plan that can succeed but one that fulfills both her need for vengeance as well as eradicating a lethal threat. There's an extraordinary revelation in the novel where Deacon is overwhelming thankful for the fact that Rosalia is on their side of this epic fight. A dichotomy of kick-ass heroine and nurturing mother, Rosalia prompts the reader into standing and cheering for her right to happiness and the love she deserves.

While amazingly climatic, DEMON BLOOD doesn't quite have the finale of DEMON FORGED but this time the end result is one readers can wholly cheer for. However, I have no idea where Brook well take this series next. With only two remaining series installments, I'll despair of seeing it all come to an end but having a finite conclusion is one I anxiously await for its sure to be phenomenal.

Rather then recommend DEMON BLOOD to specific genre lovers, I gotta make a shout out to all - if you're not already reading this author, my question to you is why the hell not?! Sure the length of the series at this point is slightly daunting but once you start, I guarantee that you'll only become voracious for more.

Lovin' Me Some Romance has been officially dot comed! Yay!

I've been thinking for a while about purchasing my own domain for LMSR but never really did anything about it. I'm not one for change. Not even small change. *shudders* So generally, if I'm determined to do something different I have to do it quickly and the other day I got a fire under butt and did it!

And here it is...

Isn't it pretty? *sigh* Ahh the little things that can make a blogger happy.

So what else is new with VFG? Well, I'm currently slaving away over my review for Meljean Brook's DEMON BLOOD while trying out some new review formats. I know, I just said I'm a creature of habit but my leap into the unknown yesterday has me feeling brave. ;)

OH, and I have a movie recommendation. If you're like me and hate when a movie patronizes you with hole-ridden plots, stupid characters, and basically wastes two plus hours of your time, then you absolutely MUST go see INCEPTION and get some vindication! Its a smart thriller with no plot-holes (trust me, I've tried and continue to try and find them), fantastic acting and amazing special effects. Someone needs to give Leonardo DiCaprio an Oscar already because he and his movies are fabulous. And Joseph Gordon-Levitt finally looks like man (has anyone else been waiting for that to happen?) and for nothing else, you've got to see this movie if only for his ultra cool fight scene at zero gravity. Freakin' AWESOME! I'm telling you, you will become obsessive about this movie. VFG ponders: Was it all a dream? - that is the ultimate question....and I'm thinkin' no. ;)

Review: SINS OF THE HEART by Eve Silver

Review: SINS OF THE HEART by Eve Silver

Releases August 1, 2010

National bestselling author Eve Silver returns with a darkly sexy new series about forbidden alliances... and inescapable desires.

As the son of Sutekh, the lord of evil, Dagan Krayle is one of the most powerful soul reapers. Dagan intends to use every ounce of his power to find his brother's remains and punish those responsible for his brutal death. But he must move swiftly-and carefully-if he is to have any chance of bringing his brother back to this world, because his enemy is on the hunt.

Otherkin Roxy Tam will stop at nothing to keep the soul reapers from resurrecting Dagan's brother. To allow Sutekh access to his remains would wreak havoc and destruction on the mortal world...and would be her unforgivable failure.

Neither Dagan nor Roxy expect to join forces for the sake of mankind. Or have their loyalties tested as they struggle against the potent desire that threatens to consume them both....

Publisher: Harlequin

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Single Title/Series: Otherkin Trilogy Book One

Cover Thoughts: Not a fan and after glimpsing the following two installment covers, one may as well expect the verdict for those to be the same.

Why I Read It: I requested a review galley from the publisher via NetGalley.

My Review:

Roxy Tam is a child of the system. Abandoned suddenly by her mother when she was five, Roxy was passed from foster family to foster family, never truly being alone but always incredibly lonely. Freshly turned out into the world of adults, Roxy is quick to trust resulting in her being abducted, bound and held in a cell until her captor can languish in the blood bath that will soon be her death. Fortunately she's saved but by the most unlikely of strangers, someone who is most definitely not a savior.

Daegan Krayle is a soul reaper. Half mortal, half god, Daegan scavenges the Topworld to harvest the most soiled of human souls to feed his father, Sutekh. A man of many names, Sutekh is a God of the Underworld, a realm divided neatly into thousands of territories each with its own master jockeying for power. Pushing, pulling and jousting for allegiances, all this havoc of past and future betrayals is orchestrated without crossing a tenuously thread-thin line that if broken, could ultimately lead to the complete annihilation of mortals and immortals alike. Now, after his three hundred year long dark existence, Daegan's life is forever changed when his coming fate aligns with that of a young girl. Never has a mortal glimpsed his face and lived to tell about it until Roxy Tam.

Skip eleven years to the present and the afore mentioned thread-thin line maintaining the world's continued existence has gotten fearsomely near its snapping point. One of Daegan's four brothers has been murdered which is virtually impossible. As a soul reaper like Daegan, Lokan can only die one way and only in the Underworld. But dead he is which can only suggest the hand of a powerful supernatural was involved. Knowing that Sutekh has countless enemies, the list of suspects is vast but incriminating evidence suggests that the Daughters of Aset are to blame leading Daegan's quest for revenge right to Roxy's front door.

Having lived with the need and loss of her savior for over a decade, Roxy has given up hope of ever dispelling Daegan Krayle from her mind completely. He haunts her dreams, igniting her body aflame with lust making any relationship in reality a complete waste. He's also changed her into a parasite, an animal in need of taking blood and to forgo means facing unbearable pain. He did this to her and then left her with a wad of cash and the warning to stay away from the Daughters of Aset. It only took a year from that day for Roxy to find them and join their ranks, and however low her position may be, she finally has a family to call her own. But when the unprecedented death of a soul reaper finds Roxy being charged with the task of gathering information that will keep the reaper dead, Roxy begins to uncover some startling revelations that includes the possibility of the Daughter of Aset being behind the murder. Knowing that the Daughters of Aset are Sutekh's number one enemy, that would be a really bad, bad thing for humanity. However, nothing can be worse than Daegan Krayle re-entering her life.

Daegan has dreamed of Roxy for a eleven endless years and it rankles him greatly to learn that after all the this time while he'd forced himself to maintain distance, hoping that Roxy had attained the life he'd wanted for her - a normal life - she'd instead gone and joined the ranks of his eternal enemy but nothing irritates him more then his uncontrollable desire to possess her body, mind and soul. It's a desire that has never waned but rather only increased and now faced with fact that Roxy has knowledge regarding his brother's death, Daegan delights in the need to keep her close until she's compelled to spill all but he never thought he'd join forces with her. As enemies circle ever closer with Roxy as their main target, Daegan realizes that it will be the end of him to lose her. And while knowing that his change in allegiance from Sutekh to Roxy will surely spell his doom, Daegan will do anything to keep her heart shielded within the protective strength of his arms forever.

My Thoughts:

Having loved Eve Silver's gothic novels before, I was desperate to experience her new dark paranormal series from Harlequin but the wait, unfortunately, was more unbearable than usual. After being disgruntled with the lack of available information regarding this series - it's a bit of a pet peeve of mine when author sites aren't consistently updated - it was therefore a relief to find that the grueling wait for Otherkin Trilogy book one, SINS OF THE HEART, was genuinely worth all the pain and suffering it indirectly caused.

Roxy is a caustic, hard as nails, hard to manage female who's currently torn in her allegiance making her wonderfully vulnerable. She's suffered early from her naivete which has inevitably lead her to clam up around any who make any probing movements leaving her once again never alone but incredibly lonely. There's only one whom she can truly share her heart and soul with and that's Daegan but his abandonment has both hurt and angered her making their getting-to-know-each-other scenes tension filled. It also doesn't help that her heart is threatened from two conflicting fronts: One, from Daegan's loving possession, and two, from Daegan's soul reaper claw. Hmm...decisions, decisions. I for one enjoyed the conundrum Roxy faced.

And then there's Daegan. He's a man who isn't afraid to get right down to the point and the way he does it will leave you absolutely squirming in your seat. While like Roxy, Daegan has grown up lonely but with the sad exception of being surrounded by people. Instead his isolated childhood took place in the Underworld resulting in Daegan's stilted and direct conversation skills. It also makes his fascination with Roxy utterly consuming as though he's looking at her with blinders to the surrounding world. It's as though no one else is worthy of his regard but her thereby making Roxy the sole fixture of his complete and intense attention. *shudders* He's a thrilling hero.

Roxy and Daegan were an amazing and fluid pairing, however, I finished SINS OF THE HEART feeling that their romance was jilted merely for page count. Twenty-five pages more and this would have been a stellar read for me. Instead it ends abruptly with me flipping back through the final pages thinking "No way! That's it?". In light of that, I do acknowledge that this particular plot had to be a challenge for Ms. Silver given the fact that much needed to be accomplished and set up before diving into the good stuff between the hero and heroine therefore making the abruptness of the ending a disappointment but in no way deal breaking.

SINS OF THE HEART is a smashing start to a dark and thrilling trilogy, one that shouldn't be missed by any who deem themselves paranormal romance lovers.

EXCERPT

Publisher: NAL Heat, A Division of Penguin Group (USA) Inc.

Genre: Paranormal Erotic Romance

Single Title/Series: DARK EMBERS is book one in the Dragon's Heat Series.

Cover Thoughts: There's a lot of elements that coincide nicely with the plot on this cover but unfortunately, I'm not feelin' much love for the cover model. In my mind, Dylan is waaaaaaay hotter but the desert landscape and the swirling magic of the colors, all convey the tone, paranormal plot and setting perfectly.

Why I Read It: DARK EMBERS was a must read for me after the novel was brought to my attention way back in March 2010. When it arrived on my doorstep, I put my other reading efforts on hold and dived in.

My Review:

Dylan MacLeod, dragon and King of the Dragonstar Clan, is unwillingly leading his people straight towards Death's door. During his four and a half century existence, Dylan's fought and won many a blood-soaked battle but the microscopic entity that's currently destroying his dragons is one battle he can't conquer. As if he wasn't under enough pressure, Dylan still has yet to find his mate and provide the clan a much needed heir. As the last pure-blood dragon, it's his duty to continue the line but despite the copious amount of sex he's engaged in throughout his four hundred plus years, his rampant efforts have yet to yield a mate. Now, after the recent loss of his sister to the disease that's succeeded in striking down his family one by one, Dylan concludes that it's time to take his fight outside the clan and solicit the help of humans.

Phoebe Quillum is no stranger to tragedy herself after loosing her family to first abandonment then violence and finally to disease. Now, after dedicating the last six years to the study of incurable diseases, more specifically lupus with a verging breakthrough, Phoebe is suddenly met with a financial roadblock that could potentially derail her studies forever. Unable to find new funding for her research, Phoebe is desperate and in the prime position to be plucked from reality. When Dylan approaches her about a strange disease that's killing his people, Phoebe is more than wary. While a lot of Dylan's story doesn't make much sense, when the gorgeous man offers her three million dollars to help him attempt to cure this unknown disease, Phoebe would be stupid to say no. It also helps that a burning hunger has ignited for Dylan on such a scorchingly hot primal level, that Phoebe's hormones won't let her say no.

Not since adolescence has Dylan been unable to control his dragon half but Phoebe's close proximity, lush figure and astounding intellect has the dragon within clawing to break free. Now is obviously not the time to be distracted from his mission to find a cure for his people but Dylan's fighting a losing battle as he's consumed with a burning need that will not be ignored. Knowing it'd be foolish to get involved with a human when he owes it to Dragonstar to find a dragon mate, Dylan tries hard to resist but his need and his dragon will not abide.

Never has a man affected Phoebe the way Dylan can. He's aggressive and domineering which would generally cause her to bristle with contempt. Instead Dylan invokes an uncontrollable lust that leaves Phoebe terrified but craving more. Trying desperately to resist falling in love with someone after learning that to love means to loose, Phoebe buries herself in the lab with the hope uncovering a cure to the mysterious disease that's killing people in the most heinous of ways. As gaps begin to widen with missing information, information that Dylan has purposefully withheld, Phoebe forces the truth from him and discovers a whole new realm of possibilities. While the news of Dylan being a dragon should rationally terrify her, Phoebe's scientific brain that relishes new discoveries, is overcome with curiosity and delight. But that interest also is emotional and endearing as Dylan reveals himself to her and Phoebe can't help but fall more and more in love with the infuriating man.

Unfortunately, when the sinister origins of the disease eating voractiously through the Dragonstar clan is unveiled, Dylan's and Phoebe's romance is put on hold. While Dylan was first to withhold information about his dragon heritage, its Phoebe's resistance that may prove to be deadly.

My Thoughts:

DARK EMBERS is a steaming hot and wonderfully entertaining erotic romance with the perfect balance of sex and plot. Too many times I've read an erotic novel and the worst has happened: I've become bored with the overabundant and redundant sex! It's true and I'm sure others have had a similar experience at one time or another. Certainly its a tenuous line between too much and too little sex and finding that balance must be more than difficult but when an author hits that perfect stride and sensual flow, she receives the result of a happily satisfied reader. With DARK EMBERS, the paranormal elements, animalistic dragon natures and understandable scientific aspects all make the perfect background for a high intensity ride of sex and romance. Lovin' it!

Another aspect that I'm lovin' about DARK EMBERS is its villains. They're not vampires, fanatical humans or any other mythical creature. They're dragons! Surprisingly, with dragons as the Dragonstar enemy, it humanizes the book and gives this paranormal read a realistic touch. It also allowed Ms. Adams to focus entirely on her dragons and really build their history and world rather than spending time creating another mythical enemy.

Sadly, there was one draw back to this book and that was the Happily Ever After. And before anyone gets scared, no, it wasn't that DARK EMBERS was lacking an HEA but rather that it just felt too easy. After both Dylan and Phoebe grapple endlessly with the reasons why they can't be together, the resulting outcome left little sacrifice on either of their parts. Of course while my inner reader is satisfied that they're happy, I wanted more of a dramatic finish. I'm also hoping that book two, HIDDEN EMBERS, doesn't have the same result. *fingers crossed*

For erotic romance fans that love and want an engaging paranormal plot, uber alpha males, and explosive sex, DARK EMBERS is a must read.

MY REVIEW

********************************************************************

My Interview:

Hello blog readers, please welcome Erotic Fiction writer, Jess C Scott to Lovin' Me Some Romance!

As a relatively unknown author, I'd like to first offer you the opportunity to tell a little bit about yourself. For example, why did you become a writer and why do you find Erotic Romance so appealing?

Thanks for having me! I guess I'm driven by a sense of purpose (to share my "vision" with readers)--at the same time, I derive great enjoyment from the writing process. I like the (necessary) blend of love and sex which Erotic Romance calls for. My experiences in the love department have not been light and breezy (I'm a Venus Scorpio...)--Erotic Romance allows one to freely explore both the mental and emotional aspects of love/sex (I tend not to separate them into two entities, when I'm thinking of seeking the "ultimate").

I was very interested to learn that you're a self-published author of the novella combo, THE DEVILIN FEY. Can you please explain your self publishing journey? Also, do you have any advice for aspiring authors that are considering this route of publication?

I got tired sitting around waiting for agents/editors to get back to me (6-12 months to reply/respond to submissions is considered "working in a timely manner"). Indie/self-publishing today is speedy and efficient--I decided to give it a shot, and found I could have full business + creative control over my writing/publishing endeavors. You literally have to do all the work / oversee everything yourself--but the great plus point is that you work according to your rules, and no one else's. I have a blog post on my website on "Indie vs. Traditional Publishing" (http://jesscscott.wordpress.com/2010/06/01/indie-vs-traditional-publishing/), which might serve as a useful pros/cons list, for aspiring authors who are considering self-publishing.

With regards to THE DEVILIN FEY there is one plot line in particular that interested me greatly and that's the quasi-moral that there is always two sides to every story. Zac, a play boy woman-hater who patronizes our heroine, is in fact a pretty damaged soul due his terrible upbringing with a spiteful mother. Once I learned the whys of his nature, I felt for him the same as Caitlin did. Was it in fact your intent to show readers the pitfalls of judging another or was this more a direct lesson for Caitlin? Or was it neither?

I think it was directly related to enabling Caitlin to see things from another / a new perspective. I'm usually focused on the characters and the storyline (more so over specifically showing readers something)--I don't even know where a story is going to go exactly, sometimes, lol. I just keep going and let the plot take new directions, if it feels right. Too much plotting and planning can be sterile and unexciting.

With the widespread popularity of vampires and shifters, what was the appeal of the incubus and succubus? For readers unfamiliar with these paranormal entities, can you explain the attributes of both and why they're gender specific?

I tend not to follow trends, so I haven't really felt a need to write about vampires/werewolves/shifters (but if I feel like writing a vampire novel someday, I just might!). I've had a certain fascination with incubi and succubi for some time. Basically, an incubus is a male demon believed to have sexual intercourse with sleeping women, while a succubus is the female version (that preys on mortal men while they sleep). Some sources mention the bisexual component of succubi--some sources claim that the succubus and the incubus are one and the same creature who can change form at will to prey on mortals. I actually think the reason they're gender specific arose from changes in social climate that saw sexual deviancy as a mortal sin (which both genders committed). Maybe the concept of the incubus/succubus helped create a "reason" (or diversion?) for one's "sexual deviance."

What can we expect from you next?

I'm currently working on a YA contemporary/multicultural "seven deadly sins" series (aiming to get the first book out by September 2010). I've part one of an urban fantasy series completed (aiming to get the first out by Sept-Dec 2010), and will be coming up with either an incubus/succubus-themed short story collection, or a standalone novel featuring an incubus/succubus (whichever I decide to do, I'll hope to complete it sometime in 2011).
P.S. I just put up a free eBook on my website, Porcelain, which showcases the range of styles and genres I write in. Click HERE to download your copy.

Thanks again Jess for giving me the opportunity to host you on my blog.

Why I Read It: I was offered a copy for review by the author.

My Review:

Story #1 THE DEVILIN FEY

Caitlin Fey, a struggling journalist, is intent on exposing play boy Zac Walsh - the New York Times Bestselling author of Seduction 101: All The Dirt on Woman - for the womanizing, demeaning, chauvinistic a-hole that he really is. Complications arise however when upon meeting Zac, Caitlin can't help but liken him to her dream lover in looks and mannerisms. Young, naive and idealistic, Caitlin falls for the sleazy opening line of
"You know, Miss Fey," he said, leaning in on my last name. "I think you and I are going to end up in the same bed, by the end of the night."
Caitlin should have known right then and there that sleeping with Zac would be entirely her fault. Instead, she blames Zac for the uneventful roll in the sack and prompt departure.

Restless and angry, Caitlin wanders to a nearby beach after her lackluster encounter with Zac and stumbles upon her true dream lover. Lucius, a lonely incubus, has been visiting Caitlin in her dreams since having been attracted to her simple soul. The two soon become addicted to one another with Lucius nearly draining Caitlin dry of energy until she emerges herself as a succubus. At first, determined to avoid this new devilish entity within taking over her soul, Caitlin resists its hold. Yet as Lucius logically points out, either Caitlin embraces her new life as a succubus or die.

My Thoughts:

THE DEVILIN FEY was a difficult read from beginning to end with the only good aspect being its super short length. The plot, what little of it there is, meanders along with no real logical flow. My respect and connection to Caitlin was cut immediately when she sleeps with the total sleaze-bag, Zac Walsh, despite knowing him for who he truly is. To top it off, she becomes enraged at Zac for the point he proved of which she'd originally planned to debunk. Stupid.

Also, the reading experience from sentence to sentence was jilted and annoyingly inconsistent with poor editing. The characters pause in their speech over and over again for no apparent reason. If the author had perhaps read the book out loud, these strange inconsistencies would have been more than apparent and fixable.

All and all, the first of the two novellas is not one that I enjoyed but for readers that gravitate towards dark erotic fiction, this may be the read for you.

My Review:

Story #2 TONGUE-TIED

Unfortunately, this novella was a DNF for me. I wasn't aware that the plot centered around a f/f romance and while I tried my best to push through it, sadly I just couldn't connect.

Novella two is about a succubus that's obsessed with a female human named Adriana. When Adriana glimpses the succubus's invisible self, the succubus becomes frightened but also piqued that this particular human could see her. Wanting to discover if the whole incident was just perhaps her imagination, the succubus spies on Adriana as she goes about her day-to-day life becoming more and more obsessed as the hours pass.

Review: SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE by Meagan Hatfield

Review: SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE by Meagan Hatfield

Releases July 1, 2010

Even vampires should never sleep with the enemy.

Vampire princess Alexia Feodorovna has been undead for 125 years, so it's been a while since any man has made her pulse race. Until Declan Black. One look at his bronzed body and a fire like no other consumes her. Then she discovers that he's a dragon lord come to take revenge on the vamps who killed his parents. And claim a crystal said to imbue its owner with incredible powers.

Alexia is ordered to torture and kill the dragon lord. Yet with each reckless encounter, she finds herself consumed by his fiery passion. A passion Declan battles, as well. Will he be able to resist the fire of lust she kindles within him and keep revenge in his heart? Or will he risk everything to quench the burning desire and claim the vampire as his own?

Publisher: Harlequin

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Single Title/Series: SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE is a stand alone novel but from the information available on Ms. Hatfield's site, it looks as though there will be some spin-off novellas featuring secondary characters.

Cover Thoughts: Love it! Its what first drew my attention. My favorite aspect is the cover's accurate portrayal of the hero's and heroine's inherent natures via their erotic pose. Her submission and his dominance are conveyed to perfection. Its all beautifully striking.

Why I Read It: I requested a review galley from the publisher via NetGalley.

My Review:

Alexia Feodorovna is just two days away from ascending the throne as Queen of her vampire horde but the occasion is destined to be a somber one. Mercilessly abused by her mother's lover and first in command, Lotharus, Alexia's ascension hangs in the balance as he strives to overthrow not only her upcoming rule but their entire way of life as well. What Alexia needs to facilitate and secure her position within the horde as Queen is the Crystal of the Draco, a rock prophesized to grant its owner pure undiluted power. Unfortunately, only her millennium-long rival knows where the stone is hidden for after all, it is he that stole it. Luckily, Alexia's successfully captured the thief, Dragon Lord Declan Black, and she'll use all means necessary to retrieve the intelligence she so desperately requires.

After the recent torture and murder of his parents - the dragon King and Queen - whilst in the hands of the vampires, Declan hopes to decimate his enemies once and for all with the Crystal of the Draco but he never planned on getting caught himself. Now, as the last remaining full-blooded dragon heir, Declan is needed desperately by his flock. Instead, he's shackled deep within the Horde's dungeons plagued by pondering thoughts that involve nothing of escape but rather of the lithe blond vampire who captured him. While he strives to hate the little female, her sadness reaches deep within his battered soul igniting a fiercely primal need to possess and protect. Together, he and Alexia form a forbidden bond within the darkly oppressive catacombs of her home, soothing each others aches and fears. When it becomes obvious that Lotharus has horrifically abused Alexia, Declan can only see a haze of red rage at the mention of the detested vampire's name. Confused, Declan grapples with the fact that where he once sought to destroy the vampires for revenge, he now only burns to avenge Alexia and the foul treatment she's bravely endured.

Pulsing with a dark menace, Lotharus is an evil villain of the worst kind, one with a dangerous strategy as well as all the patience in the world. Working to eradicate the vampires horde's current matriarchal society, Lotharus's evil intelligence has succeeded in isolating both the Queen and Alexia, allowing him complete control. Once his carefully laid plans reach fruition, both of the hated females will be dead and he'll reign as King - the first King of the Vampires to rule in over a millennium. But the Dragon Lord Declan poses a problem. Like Alexia, Lotharus must have the crystal to secure control over the horde as well as granting him the means to destroy the Queen and Alexia. Everything has been running in Lotharus's favor until Alexia befriends Declan. Wary of the potentially dangerous alliance, Lotharus is quick to punish Alexia but he needs Declan to locate the crystal before he can put the detested dragon down.

Torn between her destiny and her heart, Alexia's awaiting loneliness once Queen is unbearable to even contemplate. Knowing that in two days time she'll never be able to touch Declan again, Alexia relishes in their stolen moments of passion for they'll have to sustain her soul for a lifetime. Still determined to save her horde from the ruthless Lotharus despite Decaln's wish that she become his Queen, Alexia grasps what's left of her tattered strength and prepares to fight for her birthright, leaving Declan behind with the gift of her heart. Hoping for a miracle, Alexia resolves to take back what's hers and end the Dragon/Vampire War forever.

My Thoughts:

SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE is a dark and dangerous tale of forbidden love. Penning gruesome torture and soaring love with an awe inspiring balance, Ms. Hatfield fearlessly guides her characters along a journey that's destined to shred and reshape the very fabric of their souls.

Declan, a strong and virulent character who's absolutely fearless, follows his heart while questioning little over its strange direction. I really enjoyed this about him. He doesn't fight his feelings too hard and soon he's grasping hold of Alexia with all his might. This of course makes his inability to protect Alexia from Lotharus while in captivity all the more frustrating and just a little bit terrifying.

Just as strong as her hero, Alexia refuses in any way to shirk her duty even though it means she'll be giving up Declan forever. With Lotharus at the helm of her horde, Alexia must severe his position for to not would mean entrusting her people to a madman. Her decisions aren't easy and I empathized greatly with Alexia's plight.

Finally, the worldbuilding was just enough to be interesting but never overwhelming. SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE is very much a character driven plot with the focus being nearly entirely upon Declan's and Alexia's relationship. Overall, a lovely balance with no plot holes to plunge into or head scratching questions at the end. A nice read, not the best, but entertaining with an added touch of anxious excitement for what's hopefully soon to come.

For paranormal romance lovers that enjoy minimal worldbuilding, a character driven plot, and a strong can-take-anything-that-comes-at-'em hero and heroine, then SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE is the read you've been hungering for. Enjoy!
