This was such a great interview and gave even more insight into Matthew and Jane's love story. Thank you both to Charlotte and VFG for making it possible.

I love a broken and tortured heroes the best. I think it's because they have a past, maybe one they aren't proud of but has shaped who they have become.

It gives them so much room to grow and become the person they want to be or deep down are. It's the emotional journey not only of their love story and discovery of each other and their secrets, but their emotional journey as they grow as a person. That's what makes their story so compelling, interesting, and touching.

I haven't had the opportunity to read Addicted yet, but I can't wait to get my booklover hands on it.

Thanks Charlotte for staying true to your writing and the characters. I love your love stories..unconventional endings and all :)

Can't wait for next year !!

Review: TOUCH OF SURRENDER by Rhyannon Byrd

Available NOW!

With his auburn hair and lean build, Kierland Scott looks more man than lycan. But his wolf instincts are aroused by the gray-eyed Morgan Cantrell. Not because of her beauty, but because of her long-ago betrayal, a fateful choice that made their love impossible.

Now, however, the two Watchmen must team up, leaving the placid Lake Country for the forests of Scandinavia. To rescue Kierland's brother, they must track a vampire - and use their combined shape-shifting sensitivities in a battle that will take them beyond death. As the two learn to seek together, they begin to understand the history that has driven them apart. But they will have to overcome death itself, if their shared passion is to have a chance.

Publisher: Harlequin

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Single Title/Series: TOUCH OF SURRENDER is Book Five in the Primal Instinct Series. While I had no trouble jumping back into this series after having skipped Book Three and Four, I think new readers may find themselves a tinsy bit lost if they dived in at Book Five. I suggest starting closer to the series beginning rather than with ToS.

Cover Thoughts: While I love the vibrant teal of the cover, I'm not a serious fan. Personally, I thought that the first three series installment covers were the best - simple but incredibly eye catching. These last two in the series just don't look or feel as interesting. However, I do like that they coincide in a way that make the installments readily identifiable as a series.

Why I Read It: I requested a review galley from the publisher.

My Review:

With evil circling from three collective fronts, the Watchmen prepare for war as it looms on the horizon, dark with inevitability. A combat trained group of shifters that watch over the paranormal species of Earth, the Watchmen are in the race of their lives as they scramble to find the Dark Markers. These magical ancient relics are not only successful in killing a particularly vicious tribe known as the Casus, but they also may very well prove to be the key to closing the gates to the Meridian - the dimensional Casus prison. As both are Watchmen soldiers, our hero's and heroine's story takes place on a specific outer ring of this overreaching plot arc, allowing for bountiful page time to be dedicated to the complex layering of mistrust that infects their tumultuous relationship.

Morgan Cantrell, a shifter of indeterminate species, and Kierland Scott, a werewolf, have been embroiled in a personal feud for over a decade. Each carry secrets that could easily reverse the hostile course of their relationship to one of passion but neither can let go of their formidable pride. Instead they fight and fling jealous accusations at each other all in the hopes of protecting their hearts from what they've determined to believe will be an inevitable gut-wrenching fallout.

When Kierland's younger brother, Kellan - his only remaining family, takes off to rescue a witch from an extremely protected enemy compound, Morgan uses her blood connection to Kellan to force Kierland's cooperation and bring her along to provide backup for Kellan's rescue plans. Irritated that he must utilize the one woman he can't stand in order to save his foolish brother, Kierland grudgingly follows Morgan as she listens to the "pull" of Kellan's blood which just so happens to be leading them into the Wastelands in Northern Europe. A magical prison for vampire families that have committed incredibly heinous crimes, the Wasteland is one of the most dangerous places for an outsider to travel with the hopes of making it out alive. And things just keep getting better for Kierland when Morgan reveals her plans to engage Ashe Granger, vampire and ex-boyfriend, as their guide.

Kierland has been disturbed by his possessive feelings for Morgan for ten years. He wants her badly but he won't ever let himself have her. His is a long line of possessive and fiercely jealous males and what he fears the most is his already abundant and long standing jealously where Morgan is concerned. Afraid that he'd manage to fatally harm her, Kierland has instead built and maintained an image of Morgan as a biddable whore, one who'll do whatever the Consortium, the governing body that controls the Watchmen, says for her to do even if that means seducing and sleeping with the mark. By doing this, Kierland has managed to mentally keep Morgan at a distance, but that doesn't stop his seething emotions from boiling over when she's near. Deciding that he's going to rid Morgan of his system once and for all, he persuades her to a momentary arrangement of pleasure where he has sole sexual rights over her during their mission. Once the mission is over, so is the arrangement but it soon becomes fearsomely obvious to Kierland that a few days slaking his lust with Morgan won't even come close to scratching the surface of his need.

For ten years, Morgan has incurred the wrath of Kierland without knowing any of his reasons. Left with no choice, she's rationalized that it's the weakness of her heritage that makes him despise her like so many other shifters. With the tainted blood of many different species of shifters, Morgan is essentially a mutt as well as weak without the preternatural strength of pure blooded shifters like Kierland. Whatever the source of Kierland's hatred, its managed to break her heart, damaging her for any other man because in truth, no matter how obvious his dislike of her may be, Morgan has continued to love Kierland from the first moment she saw him at eighteen years of age. Now Kierland dangles his gorgeously ripped body before her and because Morgan has been dying for a taste for ten years, she gives in fast to his lustful demands knowing full well that her heart is destined to break all over again with the conclusion of their mission.

Despite Kierland's claiming of Morgan's body and her reassurances that it's him she wants, having her former lover, Ashe Granger, in the mix has Kierland riding the edge of destruction. With his thoughts poisoned by his own misconceptions of Morgan's fidelity, Kierland doesn't trust her claims feeling that the moment she gets the chance, she'll run into Ashe's arms like she did all those years ago. But as the Wastelands prove their reputation for danger, Kierland will have to make a decision whether or not to believe Morgan's love or lose her forever.

My Thoughts:

TOUCH OF SURRENDER is quite the emotional rollercoaster but I had a blast hopin' in and hanging on to what ultimately proved to be one hell of a steamy ride. Kierland is lust in the flesh and Rhyannon Byrd never lets you forget it. These males are just what the series title describes them as being - primal, all the way down to their sinful cores.

Morgan is one rockin' heroine. Confident, loyal and protective, she's a woman that makes fierce bonds with others easily but also never takes that ease for granted. She's very complex with her warrior exterior shielding a deep vulnerability that she shares with few others and it actually takes the length of the book to uncover all her secrets.

While Kierland's intense sexuality had me squirming, his self-imposed delusions where Morgan was concerned incurred it bit of my dislike. Burning hot then cold, he pulled my heroine through the emotional ringer on many occasions and while I wanted her to go toe to toe to with him in the those irritating instances, Morgan proved smarter than me. She knew how to handle Kierland even if at times she felt unsure. Her quiet dignity and determination forced Kierland into one heaping ball of uncertainty as he begins to question all his ill-conceived notions. And when he finally reaches the lowest of lows, he grovels his way back into both our hearts on hands and knees.

Finally, a little delightful warning, TOUCH OF SURRENDER is one piping hot romance that practically boarders on erotica. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself squirming from the heat as I settled in to read a deeply satisfying erotic and emotional journey. I highly recommend this author and series to paranormal romance lovers that crave their reads on the steamy side. Enjoy!

Please welcome to LMSR, Charlotte Featherstone and her SINFUL hero, the Earl of Wallingford!

VFG: Thank you both for appearing today on my romance blog. I'm so excited and in a bit of awe over having two amazing people under my journal-esque magnifying glass.

Wallingford: Charlotte dragged me here by my hair. She knows how I feel about talking about myself!

Charlotte: Charlotte admits she did, indeed, force his lordship. But he can be a bit temperamental at times! Thank you, VFG for having us! This will be fun. I’m actually quite excited to see what Wallingford has to say!

VFG: Alright, so I've got some tough questions lined up for you guys so 'nuff with the welcome, time to get down to the juicy nitty-gritty. Starting off a bit light here, lets discuss the beautiful cover for SINFUL. Lord Wallingford - May I call you Matthew? How did you feel about posing partially nude for your cover? Do you feel that the darkly erotic pose conveyed the overall tone of your story well? Charlotte, how much say did you have in the creation of SINFUL's cover? Can you explain the significance of the green swirls?

Wallingford: Nudity does not shame me. I have done many more shameful things in my life than stripping to my breeches for a photo. I am not easily embarrassed by sexuality, so posing half naked for this was not difficult. However, having my expressions, my vulnerability on display is. Is the tone of the cover a good representation of the book? I believe so. I appear aloof and cold, almost poised to start a fight, which I would, if I felt as though someone was prodding too close to something I wanted to keep deeply hidden. I am a man that gives everyone his back, because I cannot allow people in. I think the photographer understood that about me, and like any good artist, exploited it to make a lovely piece of art. I look at it and wonder if this is how Jane saw me. And by the by, you may, indeed, call me Matthew.

Charlotte: Well, I for one, love this cover. I think I might have forgotten to formally thank the art department at Harlequin, so let me do so now. Thank you for such a wonderful cover and for getting Wallingford down pat!
Now, as to your question, at Harlequin we fill out a very detailed art fact sheet. They ask many questions, most of which are quite extensive, especially in regards to tone, feel, and the primary characters. They also ask for a description of a defining scene in the book that the author feels is crucial in the story. Harlequin Spice does an excellent job of branding their authors (personally, I think they’re the best in the industry at this!) and I knew that Sinful would have a similar feel to its cover as Addicted. I believe (but I’d have to look at other Spice covers to be sure) that Sinful has the distinction of being the only cover to have a male only on it. And really, it says a lot to the reader, the importance of him as a character, to be the sole person on the cover.

Back to the fact sheet, I described Wallingford, his appearance etc…but I did spend a lot of time on his demeanour, his fears, his goals etc…and the art dept. went from there. The green smoke fits in well with the red smoke (opium) from the Addicted cover. Only this cover, the green represents absinthe, which was known back in the Victorian times as the Green Fairy. Wallingford does drink absinthe, and it’s not because he enjoys the taste! Although, not a habituĂ© of it, the drink does play an important part in the story. I think it all came together beautifully, most especially his stance. It’s tense, alone—apart from everyone. It is very much a Wallingford pose.

VFG: Lord Wallingford - I mean Matthew *flushing to my roots*, knowing that your art is a very private, very exclusive area of your life, I'll try not to pry too much. What or whom introduced you to painting? Also, knowing that you enjoy painting erotic female portraits, I found it interesting that despite your complete disdain for women, you were able to put your muses at ease. Care to tell how you did that? Charlotte, were you as surprised as I to discover that Wallingford was an artist? While it makes sense now, his brusque demeanor hardly made it so initially, at least for me. Was this artistic facet of a hero something that you always wanted to explore?

Wallingford: laughing! My muses were women of a certain class. It is their business to be comfortable with men. I chose them specifically for that purpose. There was no awkwardness on either side. I was able to relate to them on a level they understood—a transaction for coin. It does sound rather mercenary, doesn’t it? But back then, when I painted that portrait, I was focused on one thing. Money to purchase my gallery. So you see, I cannot accept any praise for higher sensibilities. I was quite without them, then.

As for discovering my talent, I cannot quite recall, but I believe I found I was rather good at doodling when I should have been listening to my lessons in the schoolroom. I also learned from those days, that painting took me to another place where I was someone else. I could get lost for hours while sketching or painting, and I liked not being found.

Charlotte: When I wrote Addicted, both Wallingford and Lindsay were fully born in my mind. I knew Wallingford’s secrets, his personality etc…so, when I came to the part, where he and Lindsay arrive back in England from Constantinople in the midst of a snowstorm, and Wallingford talks of the beauty of the vale in the snow, when he says “I’ll shall have to paint this when I get home,” that’s the first time I ever thought of him as an artist. It took me by complete surprise, and I remember sitting back, looking at the paragraph and wondering how much of it was true. But then I began to realize it was. Art was a piece of him that he hid from the world. It was an escape, as he mentioned. He was a different person when he painted, and I knew then, that Wallingford had many different layers, and that what I thought I knew, was only just the beginning.

VFG: Charlotte, you've mentioned on your website that you initially got Lord Wallingfor's heroine, Jane, wrong. So wrong in fact that you tossed out 200 pages of your written manuscript. What was wrong with Jane? How difficult was it to push that delete button? How was your working relationship with Charlotte during this time, Matthew?

Wallingford: Christ, Charlotte had her all wrong! Even her name was all wrong. Charlotte had penned my heroine as a beautiful, luscious-bodied shrew. I couldn’t abide her. I wanted to bed her, true, but I would have had to muzzle her. Lord, that mouth never stayed shut. She irritated me. Irked me at every possible turn, and I told Charlotte that I couldn’t stand the little baggage, and nothing about her would make me shed my misogynistic attitude, if anything, she was only strengthening it. I flatly refused to talk to Charlotte then. After a week of pulling out her hair, Charlotte saw reason…thankfully! And after that, once she gave me, Jane, my story began to pour out of me. I hope I made it very easy on her after that!

Charlotte: Oh, God, I will never forget that day. My deadline was looming, and I hated everything I had written. The heroine, who even had a different name, it was Emma or Emily, I can’t remember, was just such a monster. She was a feminist ball breaker, to be honest, and she and Wallingford butted heads like two bulls. There was nothing soft about her. She was out to crush him into submission. Yes, she was beautiful, and luscious, but there was nothing inside her that made him pause. Made him think. Made him want to get to know her. Plain and simple, he wanted to bed her and get it over with, then fight with her to the door before slamming it in her face. God, it was horrible. I was really distraught, and didn’t know how to make her into the woman that Wallingford could allow past his iron clad cold defences.

Then, on my way home from the Romance Writers of America conference, I took the bus home. I plopped in my iPod and closed my eyes. Then, Alanis Morrissette’s song, Uninvited came on, and I immediately began to see the shape of someone. I saw a woman standing at a window, back a bit stiff, she was holding back a lace curtain as she gazed out a window, and the look on her face was utterly opposed to her stiff stance. After that, the visual wouldn’t leave, and I listened to the song, over and over. I bet about five or six times, just listening to the words. They affected me in such a powerful way. After that, I had my heroine. A woman who is strong, independent, but vulnerable. A woman who is unlike any woman Wallingford has ever seen, or talked to. I changed her name to Jane, because it is a simple, common name, but when I heard Wallingford say it, it became so beautiful and intimate.

I can’t tell you how much I love Jane. She’s everything I would want in a friend, and I know that I could tell her my darkest secret and she would keep it. I think the beauty of Jane is that she accepts people for who they are. As a nurse, she is aware of the human condition. It gives her an incredible view of humanity in all its splendour and horror. She looks at people for what they are. Human. She looks at herself that way, too, and some of Jane’s introspection of herself can at times be harsh, but its always true.

I respect her. I wish she were real so that I could have her over for tea. She seems to me to be that sort of quiet person, who is content to listen to one’s problems, and never suggest a solution, or an opinion. She is simply an ear, or a shoulder, a non-judgemental friend.

Wallingford: My Jane’s capacity to understand her fellow man humbles me. I will never have her ability to accept the way she can. But thank God for that, or else I would never have her in my life. It is Jane’s ability to understand what drives a person that is so wonderfully beautiful. Had she not understood my fears, I would be alone, desolate.

Charlotte: After I discovered Jane, it was then that the story began to just pour out of me. The entire book was written in three weeks. I was merely the vessel for their story, and it was really, really satisfying to write it as such!

VFG: Matthew, Jane discerns early on that you are two different people. You're Matthew and then you’re Wallingford. Why these two separate identities? Why hide Matthew from the world? And now that you have Jane, are you still Wallingford? Charlotte, I think this aspect of Wallingford wearing a mask to shield Matthew was one of the most heartbreaking traits of a character that I've read. We all have masks, of course, that we present to the world but you took it farther and to a point where Wallingford perhaps didn't even recognize Matthew after repressing him for so long. What was this experience like for you? Was it as heartbreaking to write as it was to read?

Wallingford: Now, I am Matthew. But when I met Jane, I no longer knew Matthew. I had not even heard my Christian name in years. He had been buried alive, I’m afraid, and I never, ever attempted to dig him out. I fear him. I knew Wallingford. Could control Wallingford, and that was a comfort to me. There was nothing to fear from him, but Matthew…he terrified me. I couldn’t let him out because I feared everything about him. I suppose, by habit, Wallingford does rear his head from time to time, but never with Jane. With her, I am Matthew, or, as I have come to treasure, Matty.

Charlotte: This is such a great question, although it is making Wallingford squirm! You know, when I wrote this book, I really didn’t have a conscious objective. I just wrote what I was told. That’s how he came. With two sides. One side was subdued, beaten ruthlessly down, the other side, allowed to grow feral and cruel. The cruelty felt comfortable to him, and the kinder side did not. It’s not surprising which side he allowed to flourish. Interestingly, I did not even know his name until in Addicted, when he brings his sister, Sarah to Lindsay’s home. I paused during her dialogue. She had used Brother, and the other guests had been calling him Wallingford, and I thought, “I have to call him something different. Surely his sister calls him by his Christian name?” And I sat back, totally stunned because I had NO idea what to call him. And then, strangely enough, I heard this soft whispering of Matty, and decided that he was fated to be a Matthew. Up until then, even I only knew him as Wallingford.

This is how he came to me. A puzzle, I’m afraid. And writing his story was incredibly easy, because he disassembled so beautifully for me. But writing it was at times emotional agony. I cried a lot. My daughter would come in my study to talk to me and see me crying. She’d run down the stairs and say “Dad, mum’s crying again’. I was a real watering pot while writing some parts of Sinful. But the one thing I know, the tears were worth it. The story is honest and true, and from the heart. This is a flawed couple, who strip each other down until only their souls are visible. It’s a frightening, yet beautiful story how they come to be so honest with themselves and each other.

VFG: What I personally love about Jane is that she's real, a readily identifiable real woman with curves and best of all, with glasses. Charlotte, I love how you write about these real women. I love even more that Wallingford sees through what otherwise would have been a forgettable woman, to the beauty within. Why did set out with your writing to create these real life heroines? And Matthew, in your own words, what do see when you look at Jane?

Wallingford: Words cannot describe Jane. She is an enigma for me. There is such depth, heart and soul to her. Yet she is not without flaws and fears. I think it’s this balance that draws me. But what I cherish about her, is she didn’t try to change me. She allowed me to see where I needed to change, through my own eyes. She allowed me to grow at my own speed, without interference, but not alone. She was always there. That is the beauty of Jane. I have had many beautiful women in my lifetime, but none of them ever compared to Jane. I didn’t need physical beauty. I needed something entirely different. What I needed was something I had never had, it was a woman who fought for me—the real me. Who wanted to know that person that I no longer knew existed inside me. She had faith in me, desire for me, and it was that, that selfless giving that made me fall so hopelessly in love with Jane.

Charlotte: Wow! Feeling the love! Well, for me, I have a very difficult time relating to many romance heroines, mostly because I think they’re too perfect. I believe that we do wear masks, all of us, and it’s stripping it away to find the heart and soul beneath it that is interesting. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It’s a clichĂ©, but it’s so true. I think we find beauty in many things, and Wallingford found it in Jane. When I write women, they invariably become someone I can identify with. Perhaps I don’t care for what they’ve done, or what they’re about to do, but I can identify with their motives, I can understand and relate to their fears. It’s this that really drives me to explore this underused facet in romance. Every woman has depth, every woman has secret fears, dreams and fantasies. Every woman has a particular strength, and I think all women should be celebrated in romance, not just the perfect ones. And thank you for that compliment by the way, It’s the best one I’ve ever received about my writing! *You're welcome Charlotte! HUGS*

VFG: Matthew, there's been talk about the unconventional ending of your journey. Can you reassure readers, without giving anything away, that you're happy? Charlotte, for me you've become an author who takes risks with your writing. There was much about SINFUL that was risky. Can you explain, again without giving anything away, why you chose the path you did for your characters?

Wallingford: I can assure you, with all my heart, that I love Jane. That we will be together forever. But our journey is unique to us. Without giving anything away, I can tell you that I could have tried to change events. I could have forsaken my honor and got what I wanted. But that was what Wallingford would have done—persuaded Jane to do what he wanted, not what she wanted. This act, my refusal to push at Jane and bend her will was the first selfless act I had ever done. The pain it caused me still makes me shudder, but it was for Jane. I wanted to show Jane that the selfish, cold and spiteful Wallingford was gone, and in his place was her man—Matthew. It was my way of showing Jane my utmost respect for her, of her dreams and values. How else to show my love but to forgo my own wishes, my own happiness for Jane’s was the only gift I could give to her. Our ending was a long journey, but it was right for us. Along the way we discovered ourselves, and grew as humans. I do not know how our happily ever after would have turned out if events had been different. But I do know this, anything worth having is worth fighting for—and waiting for. And nothing is worth more to me than Jane. Her happiness. Her love. I do not believe that everyone is with their soulmate. But I know when I wake up in the morning and brush Jane’s hair from her eyes, that I am looking at mine—my very soul.

Charlotte: Oh, thanks for that, VFG! I think like Wallingford, anything worth having is worth the risk! I didn’t really set out to make anything unconventional, but I do write to one adage, ‘to thine own self be true’. True to me. True to the characters. There are two kinds of authors, writers and story tellers, and I am a story teller. My characters tell me their story, and I write it down. When I’m not true to a character, it shows, like with Wallingford’s first heroine. I’ve learned to listen to those voices in my head. Sometimes by following where characters lead makes it a bit difficult, but then, love is like that. It’s an unknown path that is filled with joy, sorrow, laughter and pain. Love’s path can be light and beautiful, or dark and shadowy. The one constant is, that love’s path is unique to each individual person, and I hope I convey that through my stories.

VFG: Charlotte, I'm so excited for your four upcoming releases next year. Can you tell us a bit about what we can expect? Do you have any future plans of returning to the world of ADDICTED and SINFUL?

Charlotte: I would like to return to the world of Addicted and Sinful and perhaps write some stories about Lindsay’s and Wallingford’s children. But for now, I’m changing speeds and writing an erotic historical fantasy about seven Fey Princes, each cursed with one of the seven deadly sins. To save their cursed court, they must corrupt their opposing virtues! Lust is the first book and will be out in Feb 2011, and Vanity will follow. As well, I’m writing a historical romance trilogy for HQN. They are straight historicals, with the traditional happily ever after romance, but with typical Charlotte Featherstone sensuality and emotion.

Thank you once again to Charlotte. You're amazing. And to Lord Wallingford, I sincerely thank you for coming today and opening up with some stellar answers. You've made this interviewer sit up straight with pride. Thank you.

Until one night when he finds himself beaten, eyes bandaged and in the care of a nurse with the voice of an angel - and a gentle touch that soothes the darkness in him and makes him yearn for more.

Yet Jane Rankin is a lowly nurse, considered shy and plain by most. There is no place for her amongst the lords and ladies of the aristocracy - despite Matthew's growing craving for the fire that burns behind her earnest facade. And then there is Matthew's secret. A secret so humiliating and scandalous it could destroy everyone he loves. A sin, he fears, not even the love of a good woman can take away.

Single Title/Series: SINFUL is loosely tied to its predecessor, ADDICTED, but can easily be read as a stand alone novel.

Cover Thoughts: One of my favorite aspects about this cover is how wonderfully unique it is. It stands out making other historical covers look almost generic compared to the masculine simplicity that is SINFUL. My only gripe: I wish he could have been tanner. He's just a little too pasty for my taste. Otherwise love the tight ass, broad shoulders, and overall bodily tension.

Why I Read It: I was offered an Advanced Review Copy by the author

My Review:

Matthew, the Earl of Wallingford, is a man of complete and utter vice. Rather than play the hypocrite and act the gentleman by day and rogue by night, Wallingford shrugs off the bother and instead fuels his insatiable rakehell reputation all hours of every day. The fact of the matter is that he knows he's damaged goods and completely beyond repair, besides, his jaded soul isn't worth any one's saving. His is a black and broken heart that annoyingly continues to beat within his chest while he sulks about his life from shadow to shadow. But when he's attacked, picked clean of his identity and left for dead in the raunchy East End of London, an angel named Jane is about to shine a blinding light upon all the gnarled wounds of his aching soul.

Jane Rankin has been incredibly fortunate in what could have easily been a very unfortunate life and she doesn't take any of it for granted. Born a bastard, Jane's aristocratic father turned out his own young child along with her mistress mother onto the streets when he married, forcing Jane to endure what no child should ever have to experience. Thankfully she was taken in by Lady Blackwood, an elderly Victorian feminist who believes in independence and self-sufficiency. For fourteen years, Jane has been Lady Blackwood's lady's companion and just when she thought she knew herself in all her entirety, a beautiful dark angel lands practically into her lap while nursing at London College Hospital. Knowing that Lady Blackwood won't be there for her forever, Jane has pursued a career in nursing and it's not just a means to an end either, Jane loves her job and empowers a strict code of honor where her patients are concerned. But when a sinfully handsome patient becomes her charge, Jane feels a deeply repressed part of herself awakening as his deep timbered voice sensually draws out her name, turning it from plain to beautiful. Suddenly she's breaking all her rules, all her personal honor to touch a man who effortlessly ignites a fire that's determined to change the very essence of who she is.

Wallingford has never thought of a woman as being more than a vessel for his own release but Jane's clean scent and soothing voice has dark poetry spilling from his sinful lips and a rushing heat to sweep through his previously empty soul. But Wallingford's fantasies paint a sensually beautiful woman and when his bruised face heals, he discovers that his angel is nothing but a dowdy lady's maid and that's after he tears through her heart and pride with his slicing tongue. However, as his disappointment fades, Wallingford can't stop thinking about Jane and his need to claim her has him disregarding the inevitable - additional - pain that he's surely to cause her for there are three things that Wallingford excels above all others: Sex, pain and paint.

Jane can't reconcile the Matthew that made her heart and body sing with the disreputable rake that all of England knows as Lord Wallingford. He's a man renowned for using women right and left with no care of the pain that he leaves behind his awesome wake and Jane is beyond ashamed to find herself as being one of many. Mostly she's just hurt. For the first time in her life she opened her heart to a possibility that she thought could never happen. She trusted him in short order and was about to give him everything that she held dear only to have him squash her beneath his boot heel as he looked straight through her and quickly found her lacking.

Fortunately, fate isn't about to let these two wounded creatures slink off to their respective caves. As situations force them together, Wallingford recognizes a distinct similarity that he and Jane share - the necessity to guard their true selves from others. Offering to give Jane anything she asks in exchange for her body as well as the woman she hides behind her severe demeanor, Wallingford stutters beneath the price she names. He must be Matthew in her presence. He must shed the cutting Wallingford and reveal the sweet soul that lays cowering within the shadows. Knowing that what Jane will ultimately find can only hurt her and probably have her turning away in disgust, Wallingford - Matthew - needs her like he's never needed anyone. While that in and of itself terrifies him, the suffering he will surely experience if he doesn't give Jane what she demands would be so much worse. Now, standing completely stripped of their shields, Matthew and Jane come together with a blistering passion that has love unfurling swiftly and soundly, cocooning them each in what ultimately proves to be a temporary bliss. But forever may be attainable if Matthew and Jane persevere over a tragic obstacle that could very easily leave their souls torn to shreds.

My Thoughts:

SINFUL is as unconventional as it is controversial. Its a gut-wrenching, emotional journey of two very wounded people that while bred from extremely opposing sides of the tracks, find a soul-binding similarity within each other. Dark and melancholy, Matthew and Jane don't experience too much joy in the time that we travel with them, but rather their love springs forth like the rising of a phoenix from the crumbled ashes of their former selves.

There are many aspects of Ms. Featherstone's writing that I love but there is one that I truly admire above all others and that is her daring to fearlessly take her characters to lows of such personal and even relevant magnitudes that they seamlessly tackle current issues of even modern day society. Both SINFUL and its predecessor, ADDICTED, address areas of human nature that many of us have experienced either personally or by association. It takes bravery to bring these issues to life with her characters and I love the emotion she evokes in doing so.

However strong and dark the issues are that Matthew and Jane experience, it will be the end that shocks most readers, an end that may have negative effects because it doesn't necessarily coincide with a traditional Happily Ever After. Rather its realistic and in truth, it was the final essential barrier for Jane to conquer within herself. My thought is that if things hadn't ended the way they did, something would have been lacking and it would have brought a general disappointment along with it. Again, I'm in awe of Ms. Featherstone's bravery and the awesome love and dedication that she has for her characters. She did them justice and in doing so, did my reader heart justice.

For readers that relish in emotionally intense, highly erotic historicals, look no further than SINFUL.

Publisher: Berkley

Genre: Historical Romance

Single Title/Series: Book two in the Passion Quartet.

Cover Thoughts: For a long time the cover wasn't to my liking, but after reading the novel, I'm amazed at how well it portrayed Matthew and Patience. I especially love the corseted female. She reminds me of many intimate scenes and I love how the Berkley art department took that into consideration. So, I'm recanting my earlier dislike. This is a beautiful cover and a lovely representation of the relationship within.

Why I Read It: I've read PASSION so many times in order to endure the long wait for its sequel that I had to buy a replacement for my tattered copy. Knowing that, no way was I going to miss out PATIENCE.

My Review:

PATIENCE is the story of two strong-willed, independent creatures that have each been betrayed by those whom they trustingly gave their hearts only to be found lacking. Now, having brutally learned their lesson, neither is interested in repeating their previous pain but thankfully there's an undeniable pull that draws these two fated beings together. And once in each others arms, their well fortified walls begin crumble as if so much dust.

An incomparable beauty, Patience Emmalina Dare is coveted by all the male members of the ton. As they preen, peck and squawk their candidacy as potential suitors, they know not that their efforts fall upon deaf ears for Patience has no desire to belong to any man. Instead, her heart - her everything - belongs to her cello and the music she persuades from its strings for you see, her instrument could never forsake her, can never ever leave her thus providing the perfect guard against any who contrive to poach upon her love. However, despite Patience's instrumental guard, she also recognizes a deep-seeded yearning for one man that has the very real potential to obliterate all that she is but the secrets he dangles before her are utter temptation and they have her leaping for a glimpse of the freedom he offers.

Matthew Morgan Hawkmore, formally the second son of an earl but now a known bastard and recent social pariah of the ton, is grasping with white knuckles to the remaining pieces of his former life that he can still call his own. But there are those that would glory at seeing his financial demise and none is more hungry for that than Archibald Benchley - the Earl of Benchley and Matthew's would be father-in-law if news of his bastard birth had never made light. Accused of withholding his bastardy from "good society", Matthew has been snubbed by those he had once called friends and now to have his name and his honor slandered atop of the fierce financial crush that Benchley has heaped upon him, the desire for revenge has him swirling in an all encompassing darkness of anger and hatred. There is only one light capable of piercing through the black that is now Matthew's tarnished soul and that is Patience. Her goodness and her light calls to him, beckoning with sensual promise as well as soothing acceptance.

It's really no surprise that from an early age, Matthew recognized and cultivated a burning need and desire to sexually dominate. With evidence of his already controlling nature, his role as a sexual dominant is no coincidence for he's a man that inherently seeks control - needs control - and in his current uncontrollable and crumbling world this unequivocal need to dominate gravitates him on a very primal level towards Patience. As if viewing a mirror image of himself, Matthew recognizes a deep-seeded and complicated pain within her and his reaction to it is fierce. Ultimately, Matthew desperately craves Patience's absolute surrender; to strip her of all her fortified walls, crumble her resistance, and tear asunder the pain that has burdened her so greatly. Perhaps by unleashing and healing Patience, Matthew can heal his own dark pain and the only way he knows how to do this is by requiring her complete and utter submission.

Patience, nervous and unsure of the submission Matthew is demanding, follows him with a tentative trust. No man has ever demanded anything of her and while she should be affronted by his commands, instead Matthew brings to light a curious feeling that she's never before felt; one that awakens a previously dormant and unknown faucet of her nature that ultimately causes her to grasp hold of it with desperate hands and an aching heart. Soon, Patience finds solace in her submissive bonds. She no longer has to control her thoughts or maintain her strict independence for in truth they're not her nature. She was meant to be a nurturer, a calm example but instead she became closed off, seemingly un-needing of anyone but her cello. For years Patience has unknowingly forced herself into something she's not and with Matthew's help she's released from these constricting bonds of her own making and instead basks in the silken bonds of his dominance.

However, while Patience unveils hidden aspects of her personality, hauntingly painful moments in her past, as well as gifted Matthew with her complete trust, he's hidden a plan from her that could potentially tear apart their burgeoning relationship. His revenge scheme for his enemy, Archibald Bentley, has escalated to such a high degree that Matthew recognizes no moral bounds. It's kill or be killed in his mind and he has every intention of beating Benchley to the punch despite the fact that his conscience is saying he's wrong. There's strong evidence of this because Matthew does his absolute best to make sure that Patience is kept completely in the dark from his nefarious plotting. She is everything that is good and beautiful in his world and to make his plans known to her would only spell his doom. Instead, Matthew is so twisted with anger and hatred that he becomes nearly blinded by the revenge he seeks rather than the cling to the love he's already been given by the woman that longs to lighten his world.

My Thoughts:

Truly, what I think surprised me the most about PATIENCE, and it's not the unbelievable depths that Valdez explored with the D/s relationship between Matthew and Patience, but the fact that it didn't resemble PASSION in any way. Instead, the novel is compellingly unique and held its own superbly against its famous predecessor. That accomplishment in and of itself is rare and quite splendid. Bravo Ms. Valdez!

That being said, I must admit that I'm shocked at the negative reviews this novel has received. This was a daring work of art that was, for me at least, incredibly moving and beautiful to experience. Every moment meant something and I basked in the depth that Valdez took her characters as each and every barrier is sensually stripped to reveal the true Matthew and Patience. Even more shocking was that people were perplexed that Matthew discerns Patience's submissiveness seemingly "out of the blue". I disagree. There were plenty examples of Patience's unknown desire to submit. It was in her voice, her words, her false independence, and most importantly it was her reaction to Matthew. Extending beyond that, the relationship was explored slowly with Matthew giving Patience every chance to leave. How else could she have known of this desire? It's not like she knew the lifestyle existed. What did readers expect Matthew to do, ask her directly about a subject she knows nothing about? Have a discussion over tea? He's a sexual dominant who knows that he must dominate. He's been practicing for years thus helping him to recognize Patience's hidden nature.

The negativity, in my opinion, stems mostly from a simple dislike of D/s. I believe that you must have at least an appreciation for the Dominant/submissive dynamic in order to fully enjoy a novel of this nature. If this is not something you enjoy or desire to read, then you're only going to see it as derogatory and your inner feminist will rear its head and scream foul. The relationship that Valdez has written is fluent with the D/s stories that I've read and loved from the masters and to read it in a historical setting by such a passionate author was an absolute dream and one I will not be forgetting soon.

I've also had a friend email me saying that she didn't see the romance at all in PATIENCE and again, I'm shocked. For me, every word spoken, every touch bestowed, taken and demanded was romance. This is a novel that focuses nearly completely on the hero, heroine and their struggle. Its dissected and explored with graphic but sensual sex scenes that will most definitely leave you breathless if not squirming in your seat. From beginning to end, PATIENCE is romance, one that I will most certainly be returning to for seconds, thirds and more.

If you love intense romance with graphic sex, x-rated language, an uber alpha hero who also happens to be a sexual dominant, and a complex heroine who lives and breathes to submit to her hero, than PATIENCE is the historical romance for you.

Genre: Urban Fantasy

Single Title/Series: MASTER OF NONE is book one in an as of yet untitled series.

Cover Thoughts: This is a particularly striking cover and after having read the novel, it really sets a compelling stage for its inner contents. The small town portrayal in the background emphasizes the on-the-run plot beautifully. And of course there's the stunning wolf alongside our hero, Gavyn Donatti, that really piques one's interest and his story is nothing short of fantastical. All in all, a perfect fit for MASTER OF NONE.

Why I Read It: I was offered a copy by the publisher for review.

My Review:

Gavyn Donatti may be the worst thief in Thiefdom but he's still a thief nonetheless and really he can't see himself attempting any other profession. Besides, his track record might be bound to improve if he had any sort of luck on his side but sadly, Donatti has the worst luck as well as the worst timing. Given that Donatti expects...well the worst in every situation, he's rarely surprised these days when it comes to exactly that. But when a seemingly indestructible giant of man saves him twice in less than twelve hours, Donatti thinks his luck may be turning around... That is until it becomes frighteningly obvious that his savior is perhaps the most unluckiest thing to have ever happened him.

Ian is a djinn warrior - better known to humans as a genie - and truly the last person he wants to rely on is a thief which consequently becomes Donatti's nickname. Just a subtle reminder that Ian doesn't agree with Donatti's "profession" nor does he feel comfortable relying on him as he's being forced to do. So, what makes Ian a djinn and not a genie? Well, while a djinn may be similar to a genie (think Aladdin), there'll be no three wishes granted with these djinn warriors but rather the genie term is loosely applied due to the fact that they all have a tether which, of course, resembles the concept of the mythical genie's lamp. And like the lamp, this tether is critical to the djinn for their very survival and if it fell into the hands of another, it could definitely spell their doom. And lastly, like a genie, the djinn also have powers but they are either strengthened or weakened depending upon their lineage.

Very early on, we're altered to the fact that the djinn are not of this world but rather exist in a separate magical realm. So why are these very un-Earthly beings on Earth? Well, that's a long story, one that is drawn out quite well by Ms. Bateman. Details to Ian's existence on Earth - better thought of as imprisonment really - are heartbreaking and you can't help but sympathize with him and the horrible centuries he's been forced to endure trapped on Earth. Yup, centuries, all with the hope of returning home after destroying one particularly nasty djinn line that were previously banished to Earth: The Morai.

Considering Donatti's expect-the-worse mentality, his ease of acceptance with regards to Ian was both believable and important given the fact that the djinn is introduced within the first few pages followed by skyrocketing action. Coincidentally, Ian and Donatti are hoping to eradicate - in essence - the same foe. Lenka, leader of the morai, is Donatti's mortal enemy's employer. Yup, there's that bad luck again and while Donatti would like nothing more than to run for the hills rather than have to endure what is sure to be a very slow and tortuous death at the hands of Trevor (loosing the take he stole doesn't win Donatti any points), a sudden major complication makes an unhappy appearance in the form of Donatti's former flame, Jazz. Thinking he'd never see her again after some really bad luck had him cutting off their fiery relationship, Donatti is shocked to discover that mixed within his fear are some strangely strong protective emotions where Jazz is concerned. This along with Jazz's endangered life has Donatti resolving to do whatever it takes to keep her safe.

Very soon, things turn into one hell of a backwoods car chase with Donatti, Ian, Jazz and two others doing their best to avoid Trevor's henchman, an eerily calm bounty hunter as well as fending off enraged cops all with the goal of bringing down the enemy while staying alive. Being on the run for your life makes planning Trevor's and Lenka's much needed demise difficult but Donatti soon emerges as a surprisingly capable leader amongst a bunch of very resourceful and brave beings. While it may appear that Donatti's luck continues to slide down the hillside as each failed hideout is detected and every boosted car destroyed, in actuality Donatti is acquiring something better than luck and that's a family. Having grown up in orphanages and loosing all his misguided partners in crime, Donatti has lived a lonely life and while his new found partners may initially drag their heels, they can't deny Donatti's incredible drive to make things right not only in their current dire situation but also by doing his best to remedy the past.

Donatti, who began the novel as a bedraggled unlucky thief, ends the story as a truly believable hero and more importantly, he's deserving of the title. Ultimately, his role was the most difficult as he was tested from point A to B and given no quarter by anyone, friend or foe. Having risen from the bottom to the top was no easy climb but Donatti does it with his own comical flare. There's an interesting combination of vulnerability and bravery; he's not a reluctant hero but rather a man that does what he has to do and taking a quote from John McClane in 'Live Free or Die Hard', "That's what makes you that guy". The term hero isn't necessarily a label Donatti craves but rather something that would lead him to shrug and say he did what he had to do for his family, for those he loves and that's what makes him that guy.

My Thoughts:

MASTER OF NONE is nothing short of a combustible, non-stop action thrill ride with the paranormal elements heating up fiercely every step of the way. There is no page that doesn't further the plot or the character's struggles as Ms. Bateman coaxes us along with tantalizing djinn details.

However, despite the intricate plot, I felt more of a spectator rather than a participant but I'm chalking this up to the fact that MASTER OF NONE is my first straight urban fantasy novel. Every other UF book that I've dived into featured a female lead as well as strong romantic elements in the form of a sexy love triangle. MON had no romance to speak of and I was unfamiliar with viewing the world only through the hero's eyes.

Also, I have to admit to some irritation over the severe judgements and antagonism that Donatti continually suffered from all the secondary characters. While this was an ingenious effort on Ms. Bateman's part to portray Donatti's horrible past behavior without going into unnecessary detail, I also felt that maybe it went a little too far. It became apparent to me that what started off as fair anger on the secondary character's part, soon evolves into an outlet for their frustrations and thus led me to become a bit disenchanted with them. Of course Donatti takes their anger all in stride and truly, he feels he deserves it. And while maybe he does or rather did, I think that the way Donatti continued to pull everyone out of danger should have had them reconciling their issues a bit quicker.

In any event, these issues are on an extremely personal scale and truth be told, this was an absolutely stellar debut. Thankfully we've not heard the last of Donatti and his crew for there's a whole lot of evil djinn on Earth that need butt-kickin'. For anyone who lives and breathes for Urban Fantasy or for those that want some definite thrills, I believe you will genuinely enjoy MASTER OF NONE.

Publisher: Harlequin

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Single Title/Series: HER VAMPIRE HUSBAND is book three in the Wicked Games series but can easily be read as a stand alone title.

Cover Thoughts: OMG, I love this cover and both models are excellent representations of the characters with the hero's dark coloring and the heroine's extravagant ruby-red lips and nails. Plus the red ring on her finger is very important to the plot and I love how it was highlighted here. Lastly, the blood spattered title is extremely eye-catching, especially with the red being the only bright color against the white, black and grey. Superb.

Why I Read It: I featured HER VAMPIRE HUSBAND on What's On My Radar? Episode 2. Since then I've been panting for its release when I finally broke down and requested a review galley from the publisher.

My Review:

A centuries long controversy between vampires and werewolves has led to a rather strange peace offering in the form of a marriage. With each species sacrificing one of their own for the union, the dueling parties wait with baited breath for love to blossom and the blood wars to end.

Blu Masterson, the werewolf princess offered for the peace-bringing marriage, has understandably developed a sad distrust of the males not only amongst her own species but of the world as well. Proving time and again that they are vicious takers with their own interests being held above all others, Blu has learned that taking shelter with the least painful of the opposite sex is better than the brutality that she's repeatedly suffered in the hands of the pack as a whole. Worse, her sufferings have been at the command of her father - a man she has little to no respect for but still holds a pack allegiance to. Now she's been forced to marry a vampire lord, a man she has no inking of and one that could potentially cause more pain than she's ever before endured.

Nine centuries is plenty of time for vampire lord, Creed Saint-Pierre, to develop some pretty unhealthy and solidified judgements where werewolves are concerned. They're blood hungry mongrels whom of which Creed had no problems executing on site up until a few decades ago. Now he only kills when in mortal danger but his flagrant hatred for the beasts still exists. Standing up for this farce of marriage, Creed has no intentions of making peace. He'll pretend, of course, but Creed and his vampires have ulterior motives that will soon make the wolves bow down to the vampires forever. But there's one little problem: Creed's new beguiling, sinfully sexy wife rendering most - if not all - of his thoughts south towards the giant ache in his pants. And the discomfort makes focusing on plans of domination difficult.

Mystery swirls intriguingly around Blu for more than half the novel. Parading around in various bright colored wigs, both reader and hero itch to pull them off to reveal the natural hair beneath as though the unveiling is also the key to solving Blu but really it only proves to be the tip of the ice berg. She's a wounded creature but the knowledge that she's never known any different with regards to what a real honorable man is makes her extremely innocent when it comes to her overall reaction to Creed. She dances about him with twists of her flirtatious outfits and turns of her scathing words keeping both Creed and the reader at a healthy distance. But with each successful test Blu lays upon her new vampire husband, his patience soon wins her guarded trust. Never once does he attempt to overpower her, hurt or abuse her. His tenderness is at first confusing and almost fearful but as Blu comes to trust him, her lust ramps sky high as well as her overall need for his love and the fact that she yearns for a vampire matters little. What's important is that she's finally found both freedom and safety, something she's craved her entire life and now that she has it she's determined not to let go.

Early on, Creed doesn't exactly know how to handle his intriguing new wife. Firstly, he's never seen a female werewolf in all his nine hundred years. They're incredibly rare and therefore always hidden protectively within the pack. But his centuries of existence didn't render him daft where women are concerned, quite the contrary. However, it's not just skill with the opposite sex that leads Creed to taming his wildly delicious wife, mostly is just his flaring instinct that she's hurting, that she craves safety and providing Blu with what she needs becomes Creed's whole world. Where he once saw his marriage as a farce now has Creed longing for it all to be real in heart and soul, not just paper on paper.

As Creed's and Blu's love for each other grows, so does the threat of impending war. It's soon obvious that the werewolves have falsely entered this supposed peace-bringing marriage just as much as the vampires with each quietly developing ulterior motives that would leave the destruction of the losing species. Difference is, Creed no longer wishes to harm Blu's family despite their foul treatment of her. He wants peace and to make his marriage last for centuries to come but two blood thirsty species that have both been craving war may prove too ravenous for love to conquer.

HER VAMPIRE HUSBAND had all the makings of a great read and honestly I was fully engrossed at the beginning until the third quarter where everything came to an agonizing crawl followed by a lackluster conclusion. I've got absolutely no complaints where Creed and Blu are concerned. They're a fantastic hero and heroine pairing with their story having all the promise of something amazing only to come up horribly short. In fact, I was sad for them because they did deserve so much more.

Blu was a fascinating heroine. I loved the reasons for her quirky and sexy personality. She kept me guessing her motivations for half the book! I was itching so bad to pull off her gorgeous multicolored wigs right along with Creed. Blu is just so tantalizing and her endearing charisma really reached out of the pages, grabbing you fiercely. Her past was incredibly heartbreaking and the fact that she never knew safety of a good man but instead sought out the least painful of her kind had my reader heart yearning to give her a giant hug. Thankfully Creed handled that perfectly for me.

Speaking of Creed, he was quite luscious and his patience with Blu won my heart with incredible speed. He tamed Blu with sinfully gentle hands and crooning soft words like a cowboy would with a skittish filly he hoped to ride. It was just so sexy. *shudders* I really enjoyed him, I enjoyed them both.

Gawd this book could have been so good. Sigh...

Determined to put his roguish past behind him, the Earl of Camdonn arranges to marry the proper Lady Elizabeth. Publisher: National American Library/Signet Eclipse

Genre: Erotic Historical Romance

Single Title/Series: HIGHLAND SURRENDER is the sequel to HIGHLAND OBSESSION but can be read as a stand alone title.

Cover Thoughts: My love for this cover is boundless. The golden hue of the cover model's skin against the deep blue background draws your eye and holds you captive. Absolutely stunning.

Why I Read It: I was offered an Advanced Review Copy by the author.

My Review:

The Earl of Camdonn has selected a wife amongst London's offerings based on the requisite that he not feel the slightest bit of passion for his countess to be. While Lady Elizabeth is perfection personified, Cam is relieved to feel nothing for his beautiful bride and signs the betrothal contract with nary a pause. However, life can never be easy for Cam and Fate soon makes its presence known when Cam is shot and cared for by the Highland healer, Ceana MacNab.

Descendant from a line of female healers, Ceana is cursed to never marry. Stealing her emotions, Ceana has sought comfort when she's desired warm arms to hold her and turned away when her heart became too engaged but when the Earl of Camdonn's life's blood is spilling before her, Ceana can't contain the possessive emotions that flood her heart. With news that Cam has brought home his English bride, Ceana knows that she must stay as far from the earl as possible but distrust for the resident doctor at Camdonn Castle has Ceana following Cam home.

Cam, doing his best to learn from his past obsessive behavior with women, tries with all his might to maintain distance from Ceana for his future's sake. He needs the connections that Lady Elizabeth brings and he's sworn to honor his vows. But Cam's not married yet and while he knows that's no excuse he still can't help his raging desire where Ceana is concerned.

For Elizabeth, Cam represents her long sought for freedom. Since she was a little girl, Elizabeth has lived in utter terror of her Uncle Walter, the Duke of Irvington. Unable to curb her headstrong behavior, Uncle Walter devised a cruel way of punishing Elizabeth that leaves her physically unharmed but psychologically tortured. She knows that Cam feels nothing for her but she also recognizes his honorable heart and hopes that one day they might find affection. Unfortunately dire circumstances forces Elizabeth into the company of Robert MacLean, the earl's stable master. Recognizing a deep-seeded control within Robert, Elizabeth finds him utterly compelling but mostly she finds sanctuary in his presence. Despite the fact that this point in her life is the most crucial to her survival, Elizabeth can't help her growing passion for Rob. Even Uncle Walter's punishments can't instill enough fear within her to distill her yearnings.

Since reaching manhood, Robert has been longing for a woman that needs him not only for her safety and well being but for her physical release as well. His passions run dark and he's yet found the opportunity to unleash his inner beast that demands complete submission until he meets the beautiful Lady Elizabeth. No woman has been more beyond Robert's reach but he can't help his body's recognition of its mate. Within her seemingly fragile form, Robert discerns equally dark passions within Elizabeth as well as the need to relinquish control. Her entire facade is rigidly schooled to present an image that couldn't be more opposite of the hellion within. Robert wants nothing but to set her free within his domain and even though he risks his very life to pursue the earl's betrothed, Robert can't stop the raging possession that tears at his soul.

So here's the conundrum: Cam needs Lady Elizabeth's connections but Ceana's highly respected reputation with his Highland tenants could also help him in his task of winning over his people. Ceana can't and won't marry because of a deadly curse and the last thing she wants is for Cam to die because of her. She loves him, yes, but she also loves him enough to let him go. Elizabeth recognizes Cam as her freedom from her terrifying uncle but there's also a form of freedom with Robert. She loves Robert where she can barely speak to Cam. Robert can't stand the thought of the earl possessing Elizabeth and while every fiber within him demands that he make her his, Robert also knows that he could never provide Elizabeth with the life she's accustomed to. And Fate is determined to mess with them all.

HIGHLAND SURRENDER is a tale of two separate couples whose fate is complexly interwoven resulting in each move made by one affecting the whole and forcing their Happily Ever After's to be precarious and rife with tension.

I really enjoyed the dual interwoven romances and the feel of having two romances in one. Both stories were intensely compelling and captivated my interest from beginning to end. There's great anxiety over whether or not an HEA for each couple is possible and as you barrel towards the end, your knuckles may turn a bit white from your death grip on the book.

After finishing HIGHLAND SURRENDER, I'm hard pressed to pick a favorite couple amongst the two. Cam's and Ceana's story is radically different from Robert's and Elizabeth's despite their close connection. For me, my love for each was crucial to the success of the novel and I thought that Dawn Halliday did a superb job with this very complex but refreshing plot.

Readers wanting a two for the price of one, look no further than HIGHLAND SURRENDER. Twice the steamy sex plus twice the intense romance equals one scintillating read that shouldn't be missed. Dawn Halliday has a distinct voice that paints the Highlands beautifully. Be prepared to truly live and experience another time as well as an unparalleled passion that will leave you absolutely breathless.

BLOOD LAW by Jeannie Holmes

Releases June 22, 2101

Genre: Urban Fantasy

To stop a vampire killer, she’ll have to slay her own demons first.

A provocative and savvy vampire, Alexandra Sabian moves to the sleepy hamlet of Jefferson, Mississippi—population 6,000, half vampires—to escape the demons lurking in her past. As an enforcer for the Federal Bureau of Preternatural Investigations (FBPI), Alex must maintain the uneasy peace between her kind and humans, including Jefferson’s bigoted sheriff, who’d be happy to see all vampires banished from town. Then really dead vamps start turning up—beheaded, crucified, and defanged, the same gruesome manner in which Alex’s father was murdered decades ago. For Alex, the professional has become way too personal.

Things get even more complicated when the FBPI sends in some unnervingly sexy backup: Alex’s onetime mentor, lover, and fiancĂ©, Varik Baudelaire. Still stinging from the betrayal that ended their short-lived engagement, Alex is determined not to give in to the temptation that soon threatens to short-circuit her investigation. But as the vamp body count grows and the public panic level rises, Varik may be Alex’s only hope to stop a relentless killer who’s got his own score to settle and his own bloody past to put right.

Thoughts: I love a good love-gone-bad-but-sparks-still-fly romance plot. It always makes for good sexual tension. You might recognize this title but not the cover. This is the cover makeover and the one that will be hitting shelves.
