Review: ALL NIGHT WITH A ROGUE by Alexandra Hawkins

Review: ALL NIGHT WITH A ROGUE by Alexandra Hawkins

Releases February 2, 2010

Seduce Lady Juliana Ivers and then cast her aside: Those are his sister’s instructions. Alexius Braverton, Marquess of Sinclair—known as Sin to the ton—is happy enough to oblige, especially when he catches a glimpse of his target. Juliana is completely unlike the empty-headed chits who barely hold his attention for a week. A true gentleman would leave her to find a worthy suitor. But then, a Lord of Vice would never claim to be a gentleman.

Juliana is expected to marry well to improve her family’s finances, even if she secretly longs to make a living through her musical compositions. A dalliance can only complicate matters, though not even practical Juliana can help succumbing to the aptly named Sin. But one unforgettable night will draw her into a scandalous affair—and a seduction begun as sport will soon become deliciously, dangerously real…

Genre: Historical Romance

Cover Thoughts: I love this cover. So beautiful. So sensual. And once again, a cover that resembles the story within for the woman's pearls are a key element of both eroticism and pain. That's a killer combo right there. ;)

Single Title/Series: ALL NIGHT WITH A ROGUE is book one in the loosely-tied Lords of Vice series but can easily be read as a stand alone.

Why I Read It: I was initially ensnared by the first chapter excerpt and if I hadn't already been offered a review copy by the author, I would have purchased one for myself upon release day.

My Review:

Alexius "Sin" Sinclair is a man of vice and debauchery. His trademark: A pearl necklace that decorates the necks of many prestigious ladies of the ton. He's also bored, jaded beyond repair with the only solace being his club and its members, The Lords of Vice. Together, these titled "gentlemen" brood and drink whilst bawdy prostitutes parade and hawk their wares. But the mundane nuances of Sin's life is soon shakend by the beautiful Juliana Ivers when in the midst of a naughty tryst with the married Lady Lettlecott, Sin glimpses the beguiling girl high in a hazel tree watching with fearful curiosity.

Juliana, the beauty in her family, is not looking for a husband while in London. Instead, she's secretly looking for a way to publish her music. But unbeknownst to the innocent Juliana is that her pursuit has garnered the attention of Lord Kyd and thus spikes the resentment of a very dangerous foe. Despite the fact that Juliana's acquaintance with Lord Kyd is a harmless business adventure, Juliana has roused the petty jealousy of a very powerful woman that has the means to destroy her reputation with a very seductive weapon.

Reminiscent of CRUEL INTENTIONS, Sin's deranged half-sister convinces him that the beautifully innocent Juliana is attempting to steal Lord Kyd's affections with marriage in mind. Saddened and petulant over what she feels is a complete offense on Juliana's part, she manipulates Sin into agreeing to seduce Juliana and then publicly discard her. Feeling protective of his half-sister, Sin is compelled to do as she bids and embarks on his seduction of Juliana.

Forgetting Sin's half-sister's request for a moment, it was odd to read of a rakish hero specifically pursuing a woman like Juliana. In my general reading experience, most historical heroes shudder at the thought of dallying with a virgin miss on the marriage mart. For one, if they get caught stealing the goods, whether it be consensual or not, the consequence is marriage especially if said innocent has a very powerful protector. Even if the innocent is lacking a protector, most jaded men such as Sin find a virgin boring so it was unconventional to say the least that Sin pursues Juliana not only at his half-sister's bidding, but for his own amusement as well. Even more shocking, Juliana is not adverse to the idea.

Juliana was a befuddling character. Her ultimate desire is to publish music but the emphasis on this pursuit wasn't to a degree that the reader would believe her capable of completely shunning the idea of marriage. In fact, there really isn't a time that she proclaims that she'll never get married but the reader is supposed to believe that this is why she allows Sin's seduction. In essence, Julianna risked ruination not only by associating with Sin but by allowing him to take her virginity with very little to gain nor even for a really good reason other than attraction. In a day and age where even a whisper of nefarious actions would taint a girl and her family beyond repair, I was surprised to read of a heroine like Juliana risking her sisters' chances at marriage for a tumble in the sheets.

Sin, in the first hundred pages, ranked a bit on the sleazy side for me. The things he said and did had me giggling or thinking "yuck". In addition, Juliana seemed an easy conquest for it took very little effort on Sin's part to convince her to allow his demanding touch. But despite these early mishaps, Sin's falling in love with Juliana was very sweet. The whole notion of not knowing what you have until its gone was very much in evidence with Sin's fall leading to one of the best scenes in the book. After a horrific family bet forces Juliana to the side of another man, Sin, having not been apprised of the situation, is outraged that she's left him and his emotion was absolutely palpable. I also thought that Sin righted the terrible wrongs he committed towards Juliana when he first treated her as just another one of his conquests. He does pay dearly for this initial callous treatment in more ways than one and his inevitable atonement was beautiful.

It was obvious from the writing that Alexandra Hawkins is an author that knows and understands romance. Given that, it was surprising to read a novel, debut or not, where the romance felt a bit hurried resulting in Sin's sleaziness and Juliana being a bit easy. This may have been because the external plot points needed extra page dedication, but the novel, in my opinion, would have benefited from more pages dedicated to Sin's and Juliana's romance. If the romance between the H/h had been more developed, then I believe that ALL NIGHT WITH A ROGUE could have been a great read rather than merely okay. That being said, I'm definitely going to pick up whatever Ms. Hawkins delivers next.

ALL NIGHT WITH A ROGUE is a novel that will more than appeal to readers who enjoy their historical fare on the steamier side. Plus, the six other Lords of Vice are just as broodingly-rakish as Sin, thus promising that more steamy books are to come.

Review: HAUNTING BEAUTY by Erin Quinn

Review: HAUNTING BEAUTY by Erin Quinn

A mysterious stranger . . .

Danni Jones believed everything about her past—that she was an unwanted child abandoned by her mother. That she was an outcast set apart by her clairvoyance. That she was alone. Then came the stranger. Dangerously seductive Sean Ballagh appears out of nowhere with a startling story that will challenge everything Danni thought was true.

A lost woman . . .

He claims that Danni’s family has been searching for her ever since she disappeared twenty years ago. He’s come to bring her home to Ireland. But Danni fears there’s more to his story than he dares to reveal. And the only way to find out is by following Sean back in time, to a forgotten past, to a world where nothing is what it seems.

A terrifying legacy . . .

Now, in a land where the mystical and the occult are as vivid as the emerald fields, Danni must rewrite history to save her family, to fight a force more evil than she ever imagined, and to reunite with the one man she was destined for—or live forever in time as nothing more than an ethereal memory, a tragic and haunting beauty…

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Cover Thoughts: Absolutely beautiful. In fact, it reminds me of my favorite artist and painter, Josephine Wall. Also, there's an item of interest on the cover that pertains directly to the story within. The woman's necklace is very important to the plot and while it doesn't resemble the description to the letter, it does portray the overall look very well. To me, when a cover ties with the story, it's a major bonus and because I knew in advance that the cover necklace was important, there was a delightful anticipation when I started the novel for when I would learn its significance.

Single Title/Series: HAUNTING BEAUTY is a single title novel but there will be a follow-up novel releasing in April about the heroine's brother called HAUNTING WARRIOR. See the end of the review for more details.

Why I Read It: Unfortunately I'd become shamefully behind in my pledge to read HAUNTING BEAUTY. Somehow it just got lost in my TBR mountains and when I saw the cover for the soon to be released, HAUNTING WARRIOR, I was compelled to dig out its predecessor. Of course I'm now pounding my head against a hard surface over having waited so long to dive into this fascinating read.

My Review:

This is a riveting tale. One steeped in lore and magic that whisks the reader on a exhilarating journey from the arid deserts of Arizona to the mystic Isle of Fennore, Ireland. Its a refreshing paranormal read that for genre lovers looking for something new will happily find exactly what they seek with Erin Quinn's HAUNTING BEAUTY.

Danni Jones is a lost and bruised soul who discovers untold strength with the help of the mysterious and undoubtedly sexy, Sean Ballagh. Believing to have been abandoned by her mother when she was a five-year-old, Danni has spent her life trying to claim some measure of belonging with her antique shop and her endearing search to bring old artifacts back together. By reuniting a previously lost chair or saucer with its corresponding dinning or tea set, Danni brings solidarity to an otherwise unsteady world. But her self imposed illusions of resigned contentment are stripped fiercely away when Sean Ballagh reawakens within Danni a fearful power that will lead her unwaveringly towards a fatal destiny.

After living for several years in the foster care system, Danni knows that being special is a very bad thing. It means being rejected and transferred. It means having to live with new families, new environments time and again. Subsequently, Danni has succeeded in suppressing her unique ability to have visions - to see the future and the past - to the point that she can even convince herself that perhaps it was all just a dream. But when Sean Ballagh forces her to have the visions in her adult reality, Danni knows that what was really a time of peace is now over. And when Sean in the flesh arrives on her doorstep the very same day as her vision of him, Danni can't escape the sense of foreboding that creeps soundly into her bones.

Sean is riveted by Danni from the moment he lays eyes on her. A deep seeded yearning that feels ages old, claims his heart and soul bringing forth a very male and very desperate urge to posses her. But Danni doesn't just make Sean's heart beat wildly, she's also the key to an unsolved mystery that has plagued the town of Ballyfionúir for twenty years. Relying on Danni's need to belong, Sean strives to lure her home to Ireland by dangling the very real possibility of reuniting Danni with her family. His hope is that with the reappearance of Danni in Ballyfionúir, his father's name will be cleared of its murder suspicions that have succeeded in tarnishing his family.

Twenty years ago, Danni and her twin brother and mother disappeared but the isle's consensus was that they were murdered by Niall Ballagh, Sean's father. Cathán MacGrath, Laird of Ballyfionúir and Danni's biological father, was the only eye-witness. Unfortunately he arrived too late to prevent the fatal killing spree that resulted in Danni's assumed death along with her mother and brother - their bodies thought to be lost to the raging sea that smashed against the cave where the events took place. Niall was unable to contest the damning allegations due to his subsequent suicide immediately following the disappearances - or deaths - of Cathán's family. If Sean is able to convince Danni to come home, then she becomes obvious proof that her mother fled Ireland with her two children and his father's name can be cleared. But if Niall didn't kill the MacGrath family, then why did Fia MacGrath and her children flee Ireland?

Danni, suspicious and very distrusting by nature, knows that Sean wants something from her but the question is what. Unfortunately Danni will have little time to interrogate him before magic and fate steps in. After putting on a necklace that Sean gives her, claiming that its a very old family heirloom, the two are shockingly swept twenty years into the past to exactly two days prior to the cavern events that would ultimately destroy Danni's future along with her still missing brother and mother. It seems as if Ballyfionúir is determined to unveil the whys and perhaps give Danni the opportunity to save her family.

Confused and wary of their strange predicament of having been thrust twenty years into the past, Danni and Sean find themselves faced with their younger selves and a dangerous mystery. Fortunately one thing is for certain and that is their all consuming passion for one another but even that proves to be threatened by simple distrust. Shunned for twenty years by the townspeople, Sean has built a healthy wall around his heart while Danni has the done the same after having been abandoned by so many people. Yet trust is the very crux to the mystery that threatens them and without it, Danni and Sean will find themselves greeting the clammy hand of death.

HAUNTING BEAUTY is a novel that will leave you pondering way past its end. The mystery betwixt its pages is soaked in blood and fear but its combated by the sheer determination and selflessness of its characters. Also, the complexities of the time line, family tree, and plot twists are wonderfully choreographed leaving very little unresolved at the end. Both Danni and Sean are in the fight of their lives in HB and despite the very integral role of the mystery that's thrown them together, the romance isn't lost or drowned out.

If this review has seemed vague, that's because to reveal more than the few bits that have already been detailed would spoil everything that makes HAUNTING BEAUTY a great read. This is a novel that showcases a promising up and coming paranormal romance author that'll surely be on many an auto-buy list to come. The only thing that prevented this book from claiming an A grade was a few places here and there that could have been clarified to a deeper degree and to bring those things to light would spoil the end. Otherwise, be prepared for an awesome ride.

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Cover Thoughts: The cover, while very pretty, didn't really have anything to do with the book. However, I enjoyed looking at the beautiful colors and I believe that if I saw SHATTERED at the bookstore, that very beauty would have compelled me to pick it up and read the back cover blurb. So in the end, that's saying something.

Single Title/Series: SHATTERED is book eight in the Bitter Creek Series but can very easily be read as a stand alone novel.

Why I Read It: I was offered a review copy from the publisher.

My Review:

As a general rule, I'm very picky about what books I'll review for authors/publishers. With my blog I've not only done my best to make it clear both visually and materially, but with my "About Me" as well, that I read romance. Period. However, over the recent months I've been sent some startling review requests for genres I don't read. How someone can take one look at my blog and assume that I want to read a lawyer crime drama is beyond me. Well, unless that lawyer crime drama is about vampires and/or love triangles... Suffice it to say I was very excited to receive a review request for a book that fit my romance reading preferences. And SHATTERED is romance.

Moving on to the review. First off, I have to say that in order to enjoy SHATTERED, the reader has to view it as soap opera. As with all soap operas, they're ridiculous in the extreme but that ridiculousness is also offset by sheer entertainment. With that knowledge, SHATTERED, while sublimely entertaining, also verges a bit towards the ridiculous.

In addition, SHATTERED also goes above and beyond reality. Generally reality isn't what I care about in a novel. As a reader of paranormal romance I'm constantly required to suspend my version of reality in order to enjoy the novels I gravitate towards naturally. To my knowledge, no one reads romance novels in the hopes that it will mirror reality. In my opinion, I get enough of the real on a day-to-day basis to want to scream! I read romance to escape and if a particular book happens to break Nature's rules as we know it then so be it. But, and here's the exception for my own little reading rules, if the book is of contemporary and/or romantic suspense genre, then I expect it to resemble reality closer than I would with paranormal. That being said, I thought that SHATTERED required a suspension of reality to fully enjoy it and that's difficult for this particular genre and perhaps also why it's such a difficult genre to write successfully.

Now back to my soap opera analogy. Generally there are several different interconnecting stories that make up a soap opera and SHATTERED is no exception. I've isolated at least seven different interconnected stories taking place in real time. This means that there are several different Points of View and back stories that are very creatively delivered upon the reader. For this review, I'm only going to highlight a few of the above mentioned seven.

Story One: Wyatt Shaw vs. Kate Pendelton

Kate Pendelton, mother of twin eight-year-old boys and wife to her estranged husband of which the world believes died heroically in Afghanistan, feels that she's finally got her life back on track. With her deranged husband, J.D. Pendelton, hiding out in South America, Kate is ready to move on with her life with Jack McKinley, Texas Ranger. At nineteen, Kate fancied herself in love with Jack but when he turned his back on her to marry his high school sweetheart, Kate found herself running into J.D.'s arms and subsequently into a life of complete heartache. Now that Jack and his wife are on the brink of divorce, the two have found each other once again and have plans to marry. But unfortunately a night from Kate's past shows up on her doorstep in the form of Wyatt Shaw, son of notorious mob boss D'Amato, demanding that his eight-year-old sons and Kate are to leave with him to his compound in San Antonio.

Wyatt Shaw is a gorgeous enigma. He's loved Kate from the very first and after their single night of shared passion nine long years ago, Wyatt did his best to track down the mystery woman that broke open his soul within mere hours of meeting. Now he's found her and he has every intention of keeping her and his sons. With his mob boss father monitoring his every move, Wyatt knows that the old man is looking for new flesh to run his empire. With Wyatt on the outs, D'Amato now has two young boys that he can set his sights on but Wyatt will stop at nothing to protect the two boys he's only just met but has already fallen in love with. Now if he can only get Kate to fall in love with him.

Story Two: Jack McKinley vs. Holly McKinley

Jack McKinley was, at one time in his life, at the ultimate high but after some familial gambling debts recked his promising future, it's been a rough struggle ever since to merely find contentment. Now with his marriage imploding and only one amazing son to show for it, Jack's ready to start a new life with Kate Pendelton. The heartache of their disappointing relationships has brought forth a fierce bond between them and they're each striving for some semblance of happiness in each others arms. But it would seem that the forces of nature aren't down creating havoc when in swoops Wyatt Shaw. Before Jack has time to do anything about it, Kate, her two boys and his promising future are once again ripped from his hands.

Holly McKinley has every intention of winning back her husband. No sooner had she banished Jack McKinley from their home when she realized her error. As a young girl, her father walked out on her mother countless times to eventually never return. Never the trusting type, Holly realized that she'd been methodically pushing Jack away for years and finally, for no real good verbal reason, kicked Jack out. In her mind, she was eliminating the possibility of him leaving her for that's what he'd ultimately do, right? Admitting to herself that she'd been very wrong and with the hands of fate seemingly on her side, she devices a way to have Jack live with her until their divorce is final with plans of seducing her husband back into her bed and her life. But when tragedy strikes, both Holly and Jack will have to overcome huge obstacles or Holly's hope of Happily Ever After will be shattered forever.

Story Three: Kate Pendelton and Wyatt Shaw vs. J.D. Pendelton and D'Amato

Of course Romantic Suspense can't be suspenseful without a few bad guys. Kate's "dead" husband arrives back in the states to try his best to deflect his would be murderer, Mob Boss D'Amato. After faking his death and making off with millions of dollars worth of D'Amato's lucrative drug trade, J.D. needs something to bargain for his life with. In addition, he's out for a bit of revenge his own after discovering that Kate led him to believe that the twin sons she gave birth to were his.

D'Amato, disappointed that his one remaining son, Wyatt Shaw, will not take over his empire, is overjoyed at the fact that he has two previously unknown grandsons. Hatching a plan to subtlety influence the twin boys to his side, D'Amato will stop at nothing to make contact with his would be heirs even if it means he must destroy his last living son in the process.

SHATTERED, despite its girth, is a fast paced read with a topsey-turvey plot that for all its intensity, never leaves you in the dust. Its flamboyant entertainment makes for a good read that's surprisingly captivating. Unfortunately its characters are two-dimensional with either over the top revenge schemes, or they encounter a series of tragic roadblocks that has the reader calling foul.

Wyatt's and Kate's whirlwind relationship of fantastical romance is just a bit too far fetched while Jack's and Holly's romance could have been classified as more tangible if it wasn't for the absolute devastation that Johnston rages upon them.

All in all, SHATTERED is a read I would comfortably recommend but with the accompanying warning that the reader be prepared to suspend their reality with this soap opera-esque romance.
