Guest Post with Dawn Halliday & Giveaway!

When I discovered that an erotic Highlander novel was going to be releasing, I knew I had to get my hands on an early copy. After begging - not so eloquently I might add - a beloved blogger friend of mine, I soon found myself holding a little pink copy of Highland Obsession. No sooner did I begin when I was assaulted by the intense emotion and erotic nature of the plot. I wrestled with my reader heart over which hero I loved more as the heroine was pushed and pulled by her yearnings for a husband and family.

After closing the book on a contented sigh, I began to ponder the author's take on the love triangle. This prompted me to contact the gorgeous Dawn Halliday and ask her to guest post on the topic and I hope that at least in this case I was eloquent. I'm happy to say that she accepted too. Although, she may have worried about what she was getting into if she witnessed my fangirl happy dance....

Releasing August 4, 2009

The Earl of Camdonn is consumed by his passion for beautiful Highland lass Sorcha Stewart. Cam draws her into a secret world of erotic bliss—until Sorcha’s fierce loyalty to her clan leads to an arranged betrothal of her father’s choice. Cam watches in despair as the object of his desire is torn from his arms only to marry his childhood friend, Alan MacDonald.

Alan, newly returned to Scotland from England, marries the innocent and enchanting Sorcha, thinking he’ll be the one to introduce her to the pleasures of the flesh. But Cam, driven mad by jealousy and desire, abducts Sorcha on her wedding night. And as Alan fights to claim what is his, he is lured into a triangle of forbidden passion…

AHHH…Love Triangles…
(or…what was I thinking?!)

My first two New York-published books (A HINT OF WICKED, writing as Jennifer Haymore, and HIGHLAND OBSESSION, writing as Dawn Halliday) center around emotional love triangles.

I had no idea people had such strong opinions about love triangles when I first started writing these books. I had no clue that some people love love triangles and other people hate them. It was naïve of me, I suppose, but I just thought a good story was a good story, and people wouldn’t go into the books with any preconceived notions about how they’d feel about them.

Eek. How wrong I was!

But let me go back. I want to tell you about how these books came about…and about my thoughts on love triangles.

A HINT OF WICKED came first. When I first think of story ideas, part of my goal is to get my hero and heroine into a seemingly unsolvable situation…and then I didn’t want to resort to clichés or tried-and-true formulas to get them out of these situations. I want to resolve the problem and have a happy ending, but I search for that hint of bittersweetness. No pain, no gain, right? The idea of the love triangles evolved from that goal more than any plan to write a love triangle story.

When I started both books, I knew which of the heroes the heroines would choose in the end, but getting to the point of starting was a challenge in the case of A HINT OF WICKED. When I was plotting that book, I went back and forth at least a hundred times! Would it be Tristan? Garrett? BOTH!? After talking to my husband, my agent, my editor, and anyone who would listen, the answer became clear, and once I sat down and started writing, I knew how it had to end.

As for HIGHLAND OBSESSION, the original goal was a ménage ending, but once I started exploring the characters, I realized pretty quickly that they would never realistically survive in such a relationship! Too much pride and possessiveness on the part of the hero! I ultimately think HIGHLAND OBSESSION is really not as much of a love triangle book as A HINT OF WICKED is, because it is clear very early on who the hero and heroine are. I think HIGHLAND OBSESSION is mostly a story about how two strangers grow to trust and ultimately love each other.

I think love triangles have always been around and will continue to be around forever. Look at history—Helen of Troy, Henry VIII, Cleopatra. And even more recent—Jennifer Anniston, Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie… Can you think of one?

Tell me about a real-life love triangle (famous or your own) and I’ll enter you in a drawing to win a copy of HIGHLAND OBSESSION
.

Review: Caressed By Ice

Review: Caressed By Ice by Nalini Singh

As an Arrow, an elite soldier in the Psy Council ranks, Judd Lauren was forced to do terrible things in the name of his people. Now a defector, his dark abilities have made him the most deadly of assassins—cold, pitiless, unfeeling. Until he meets Brenna…

Brenna Shane Kincaid was an innocent before she was abducted—and had her mind violated—by a serial killer. Her sense of evil runs so deep, she fears she could become a killer herself. Then the first dead body is found, victim of a familiar madness. Judd is her only hope, yet her sensual changeling side rebels against the inhuman chill of his personality, even as desire explodes between them. Shocking and raw, their passion is a danger that threatens not only their hearts, but their very lives...

Book Three in the Psy/Changeling Series

The Laurens: A family group of Psy that went into SnowDancer wolf territory and dropped from the PsyNet. Their stars winked out one by one leaving the Psy Council to assume that each was struck dead by the wolves for reputation had proceeded the ruthless predatory changelings as well as their despise of the Psy. What the Psy Council didn't know was that the Laurens risked their lives based on that very assumption - and lived.

Judd Lauren, a TK-Cell Psy (Telekinesis with sub designation Cell meaning he has immense telekinetic powers at the cellular level making him extremely lethal), is determined to maintain Silence despite the fact that he dropped from the PsyNet along with his family over a year ago. Due to the lethal nature of his gifts, Judd along with other TK-Cell Psy, found solace in Silence for it was a way to protect themselves from others. Prior to Silence, TK-Cell Psy were murderers who generally struck those they loved most with their abilities. With Silence they no longer had to fear killing those closest to them nor did they have to spend their lives behind bars. Yet one little wolf with an indomitable will may just break the chains that Judd holds so fiercely on his heart.

Brenna Shane Kincaid, the sole survivor from the evil clutches of a sociopath and Psy Council member Santano Enrique, knows she's different from the other wolves of her pack. The obvious difference is that none of the others had been through Hell and lived to tell about it but she also feels that she might be a little bit Psy. Enrique ripped her mind open, committing rape on the most intimate of levels and in the process, may have awakened a previously dormant area of her brain giving her "visions". Her fears are proven true when a fellow SnowDancer is killed within the den and the crime scene looks terrifyingly familiar for Brenna had just witnessed it in her dreams. Feeling mentally dirty over the evil that seems to have infected her, Brenna refuses to seek out Sascha Duncan, the E-Psy and mate to the alpha of DarkRiver - SnowDancer's leopard allies. Brenna can't stand the idea of subjecting the intrinsically gentle Psy with her nightmare after everything Sascha had done to pull her soul back from near death. There is only one other Psy that Brenna knows can help her, the "Man of Ice" - Judd Lauren.

Unbeknownst to Judd in the beginning is that he's already broken some surface level ties to Silence. While he's accepted that Brenna has ingrained herself on his mind, Judd rationalizes it away as merely an unavoidable after effect from his "lending" of power to Sascha as she repaired Brenna's brutalized mind. It's the fact that he's walked through her nightmares, seen the damage she survived by sheer force of will, that Judd has founded a deep rooted respect for the female wolf. He also plans on never letting Brenna discover his TK abilities. As far as the SnowDancer pack knows, Judd is only a strong telepath and it's true that he is, but while revealing this knowledge he's also conveniently left out his more powerful and deadly TK abilities. SnowDancer and most especially Brenna, are not rational when it comes to TK-Psy due to Enrique. It's in these small actions of protection that Judd reveals his emotions where Brenna is concerned. Now with Brenna's "visions" coming to his attention, Judd will do everything he can to make sure that Brenna is okay even if it means that he has to ground her with touch as is the changeling way of support and care.

But as Brenna seeks out Judd more and more for comfort, he's soon alerted to the staggering and possibly deadly impact that she's having on his mind. Psy with Judd's TK-Cell abilities were conditioned to Silence by using severe pain controls that are programmed into the mind. When Judd allows himself to feel emotion he is reprimanded by near debilitating pain. This pain grows exponentially overtime if he doesn't adhere to Silence and could cause his brain to implode. Knowing this, Judd makes the decision to flee to the outer corners of SnowDancer territory in the hopes of repairing the fractures in his mind that have been caused by his burgeoning emotions for Brenna. On a deep seeded level, Judd knows that he's not what Brenna needs. A cold and aloof Psy can't provide the healing she deserves and Judd tries his best to deflect Brenna's interest. But no sooner does he arrive at his stationed post when Brenna comes traipsing out of the forest with her pack and a look on her face that blatantly shows she's there to stay.

Brenna will not allow Judd to run from what they could have together and his prickly demeanor and callous efforts to turn her towards other wolves won't stop her from getting her Psy. Realizing the defeat of his previous efforts, Judd starts doing his best to scare Brenna away by revealing his position within the Psy as an Arrow - a deadly assassin and the Psy's first defense against any threat. Yet despite the fear that Brenna feels at Judd's revelations, somehow she knows that Judd would never hurt her. But Brenna's hopes where Judd is concerned are more than tested when he makes a major error. Males stand up for their females in public no matter if he feels that she is wrong. When Judd doesn't back Brenna up against the pack, she starts questioning what she's even doing with Judd in the first place.

While a potential boon has been thrown Judd, he finds that he doesn't want to push Brenna away and soon seeks her out to make amends only to find that she's been doing some seeking of her own and taken Judd's advice to find a changeling male to provide for her needs. As dark jealousy and fierce possessiveness sweep over Judd, he comes to terms with the fact that he's claimed Brenna and doesn't think he'll ever let her go. Even if she does eventually find her intended mate, there will be bloodshed. But despite Judd's claiming, a sexual relationship is still out of the question. Judd is still resolute to not break Silence but he's also finding his need to be with Brenna is slowing chipping away at his resolve.

In the midst of Judd and Brenna's complicated mating dance is a dark presence that haunts them and threatens to destroy both their lives. Judd knows that loosing Brenna to death will cause his rigid control on his abilities to snap thus potentially causing the deaths of countless innocents as a result of his rage. In the back of his mind, Judd feels the count down to the strike on Brenna's life and he can only hope that this time he is there to protect her.

'Caressed By Ice' continues to be one of my very favorites in the Psy/Changeling series. It was interesting to go back and read about Brenna, a female changeling heroine, after Mercy's story in 'Branded By Fire'. Brenna and Mercy are very different with the most glaring being that Mercy is exponentially more dominant than Brenna. A man like Judd would have sent Mercy running for the hills to avoid his blatant dominance. Brenna, on the other hand, was in desperate need for a mate that could handle her inner darkness and who better than the dark angel that is Judd Lauren.

Sigh...Judd Lauren. I'm lovin' me some virgin hero at the moment. ;)

One my favorite aspects of Judd's character is the sheer dominance that radiates from his person despite Silence. No amount of pain controls can contain the arrogance that is Judd. Plus, he's just so deadly. His TK-Cell powers were as interesting as they were frightening. You had to admire Brenna's strength of character to not be afraid of Judd especially after her ordeal with the Cardinal TK - Santano Enrique. Judd is also fiercely loyal and faced certain death to protect his family. His strong capabilities to protect along with his loyalty make him a strong and worthy hero for Brenna.

It was nice to experience a strong heroine after Faith in 'Visions Of Heat'. The fact that Brenna survived Enrique's attack and retained her sanity is a strength in and of its self. She's stubborn too and that personality trait was much needed when dealing with a male Psy. Her persistence in her desire for Judd was truly necessary. Despite Brenna's age of twenty, she's much older then her years given the horror she experienced and survived. She's also the youngest female heroine that I've read by Singh but really you were surprised at Brenna's age. While she did make some immature decisions at times, overall Brenna was mature far beyond her years.

There are a lot of new developments with the Psy in 'Caressed by Ice'. We learn about the Ghost - a rebel Psy who's recruited Judd's services to help bring down the Psy Council. This proves that not everyone is aligned with the evil that is the Council but we're also shown how the Council hopes to eradicate any dissension in their race. With the implementation of Protocol I, Psy would effectively become a hive mind in truth with individuality wiped clean and replaced with the goal of serving the Council and their race. Judd and the Ghost make headway in CBI to thwart those plans.

'Caressed By Ice' is a superb addition to the Psy/Changeling series and solidified Nalini Singh's amazing talent as an author.

Review: Wicked Little Game

Review: Wicked Little Game by Christine Wells

For years, the Marquis of Vane has hungered for Lady Sarah from afar, watching the beauty brave a disastrous marriage. Then Sarah's wastrel husband makes Vane an indecent offer - one night with Sarah for ten thousand pounds - and the temptation is almost too great...

When Sarah comes to him, Vane can't resist making love to her - on his own terms. Nor can Sarah refuse a night of exquisite pleasure with the devastating man who haunts her dreams.

By morning, Sarah's desire turns to shame and a deep fear of Vane's power to bind her. Desperate, she does the one thing that will stop him from claiming her as his own - leaving him shattered by her betrayal. But neither she nor Vane dreamed their passionate encounter would set the stage for murder and that a deadly twist of fate could spell a lifetime of regret - or a love to last all time...

I stumbled across a mention of 'Wicked Little Game' on Anna Campbell's website. A Marquis, longing hopelessly for another man's wife, is tempted to take up an offer from her dastardly husband to spend one passion filled night with her in return for the criminal sum of ten thousand pounds. Needless to say my interest was immediate and I googled the unknown author, read an excerpt and promptly fled the office for the nearest bookstore to pick up my own copy.

When a young, reckless and strong-willed seventeen year old Lady Sarah married Brinsley Cole, she though it was a great and passionate love they shared. Fighting nearly tooth and nail to get what she wanted, Sarah burned bridges with her family to achieve her goal of marriage. Unfortunately her thoughts of love were nothing but a smokescreen hiding her husband's true and cruel intentions. Now, ten years later, Sarah has constructed formidable and icy walls to shield her heart and exudes the prickly and prideful nature of a woman scorned but also one bound and determined to hold her head high. There's only one soul on earth that probes beneath her hateful layers to the passionate woman below and that's the utterly masculine Marquis of Vane. The man is danger in the flesh and Sarah has always felt his penetrating gaze to the very heart of her soul but she's also prided herself on her everlasting refusal to partake of the sinful pleasure that he's always offered her; always wanted from her.

Vane can't actually put into words the why or how of his infatuation with Lady Sarah Cole. Once, already years ago, he asked to form an arrangement with her but she shot him down with such cold precision that he couldn't stand to see for her many, many months. Even with the beating to his pride, Vane still could never turn his mind loose from Sarah. Despite her icy demeanor, Vane was sure that it shielded passion for her soul was nearly tangible to his roaming awareness. She plagued his thoughts and his body and her confounded husband only served to spark his intense anger over the fact that he wasn't the first to claim her heart.

When the very man that holds Vane's every desire approaches him with the horrid proposition of one night with his wife for ten thousand pounds, Vane is more then tempted but honor prevents him from accepting the offer. Yet surprisingly, Sarah arrives on his doorstep demanding an audience. Vane, thinking that she has finally come to him, surrenders his famous control and the two make love until morning. With fleeting thoughts of making Sarah his forever, he begs her to stay only to have the woman of his dreams demand her ten thousand pounds from him. Feeling the cold claws of betrayal, Vane lets her go with every intention of never laying eyes on the woman that broke his heart but murder would throw them together once again.

Desperate to prevent the truth of her whereabouts on the night of her husband's death, Sarah's only recourse is to swear vehemently that she's innocent when suspicious eyes turn her way. Despite the cruel fact that her marriage to Brinsley sunk her far below the high position within society that she once took for granted, Sarah will not allow her husband's death and the subsequent unveiling of her affair to tear her already delicate reputation to shreds. But when it's brought to her attention that Vane is being looked upon as a potential suspect, Sarah reveals her secret.

Meanwhile, Vane is trying desperately to provide an alibi for Sarah and has petitioned her parents. Vane knows that Sarah doesn't want her parents involved for not only could she not bare to sully their name, but her pride prevents her from allowing her parent's charity. Besides, after the bridges she's burned, why would they even want to lift a finger to help their child? But what Vane finds is a father's reluctance and a mother's stubborn drive to help Sarah. Alibi secured, Vane is then outraged when Sarah tells him that her secret is known and she is free of all suspicion.

In the face of Vane's anger, Sarah's icy demeanor falls into place and she decides to never allow him to know that she did it all to save him. But when Vane offers marriage as a solution to save her reputation, it's Sarah's turn to be outraged. But when his argument proves to be the only option left to her, Sarah unwillingly agrees. In truth, she tried her best to protect Vane from herself. She feels that he deserves an innocent beauty with every capability to love for in her mind, the woman of many years ago is gone and can never be again. She's lived so long with the determination to hate and she's clung so desperately to her pride that Vane would be getting an empty shell of a heart for a bride. But even beyond this, Sarah's greatness fear is that Vane has the ability to break through her barriers, strip her soul to its very essence and demand her love then with that manly accomplishment, he'll ultimately betray her for that's what men do.

When he looked at her, Vane saw an object of desire, a beautiful thing that he dearly wished to possess. He didn't know she was like a ripe, red apple with flawless skin but riddled and worm-eaten inside.
Rotten. All but a thin core of pride that the recent past hadn't quite obliterated. From there, she would rebuild, layer by layer, until she had made something of herself. She couldn't let Vane take what he wanted from her and toss her away.
His interest in her was so intense, so baseless, so unreasonable in light of all she'd done that it could only be infatuation. An ephemeral emotion, one that wouldn't last much longer now that he had her, as he'd wanted for so long.

Wicked Little Game © Christine Wells

Vane, in a way, can't help but rub his hands together in glee at the thought of finally possessing Sarah and despite her cool request that she have her own bedchamber and that she wishes to not be touched, Vane is confident in his skills of seduction. He's also confident that he can crack through Sarah's formidable walls but as time goes by he recognizes that he has ten years of pent up anger and distrust to deal with. He tries to see the woman within, walks down all avenues but is continually bombarded by the same result. Yet despite his frustration, he falls in love Sarah but when he's given proof that the only person Sarah can love is an innocent child that is not related nor in anyway in her control, Vane lets go.

He waited an eternity for her to retract the words, to tell him he was right, or at least suggest a compromise. But nothing came. She was more afraid than he'd suspected, then. More distant than he'd known. Colder, too, if she could so easily turn her back on all they'd been to one another, all they'd become.
But he couldn't see the profit in running after her while she chased this impossible dream of love. It hurt him inexpressibly that she sought another man's child when he could not give her one. In all, there was only so much battering a heart could take before it gave up the fight. His was nearly counted out.
Finally, he said, "Very well. I'll draw up the terms of our separation. You won't find me ungenerous, I hope."

Wicked Little Game © Christine Wells

I'll just come right out and say that I loved 'Wicked Little Game'. Not sure of the title...but the contents within were astounding. Wells wove a complex and intriguing story that I lapped up with urgent haste. Rarely do you find a historical that provides as many twists and turns as WLG with the added bonus of incredible emotional depth.

Vane....wow. He is an amazing hero, one that I never get tired of reading. I think he loved Sarah from the very first moment he laid eyes on her for it was telling with each and every action he made towards her. He stands up for her when he has no reason. He comforted her when he recognized despair. He let her rip into his soul time and again and continually came back for more even when all Sarah caused was pain. A lesser man than Vane would have given up on Sarah. She was so hard, so callous and so adept at keeping her icy cold mask in place. But Vane understood her core. He knew what she was protecting and he was determined to break through all her walls.

What is most unlike me is my love for Sarah. Typically I would dislike her character immensely. She's unbearably stubborn and ruthless in her pride. She would be a woman that I would have no desire to tangle with but the difference is that I understood her pain. Ten years of betrayal after betrayal from the man you fell in love with and married undoubtedly corrupts your soul and your ability to trust. She has no options, no outs. Instead Sarah finds solace in petty punishments she was able to dealt Brinsley. She gave him the illusion that anything he tried to throw at her wouldn't shake her impeccably cold heart when inside she's crying and railing at his callousness. Sarah knows immediately upon meeting Vane that he is the man that can reveal the woman within and I think Sarah was afraid of what even she might find when all her barriers were gone by his sheer force of will. Perhaps she really did have an empty shell of a heart. Knowing that, I think Sarah was more afraid of herself than Vane although she did her best to make him believe that it was him she feared.

I do wonder though if my opinion of Sarah would have been different if she hadn't forsaken her reputation to save Vane from being charged with murder. Her split second reaction showed then and there that she was able to make huge sacrifices for him without even having yet developed the incredible love that she does eventually hold for him. Luckily for her she did it and in that action she revealed that she still had the capacity to love and that she truly did deserve everlasting happiness.

Review: Romeo Romeo

Review: Romeo Romeo by Robin Kaye

Rosalie Ronaldi doesn't have a domestic bone in her body ...

All she cares about is her career, so she survives on take-out and dirty martinis, keeps her shoes under the dining room table, her bras on the shower curtain rod, and her clothes on the couch ...

Nick Romeo is every woman's fantasy - tall, dark, handsome, rich, really good in bed, AND he loves to cook and clean ...

He says he wants an independent woman, but when he meets Rosalie, all he wants to do is take care of her. Before too long, he's cleaned up her apartment, stocked her refrigerator, and adopted her dog ...

So what's the problem? Just a little matter of mistaken identity, corporate theft, a hidden past in juvenile detention and one big nosy Italian family too close for comfort ...

Dominick "Nick" Romeo may be a Romeo in name but he's a Casanova at heart. A rags to riches past, Nick is now known as the Donald Trump of Brooklyn and he's practically beating women off with a stick. It's been a long time since he's had to pursue a member of the opposite sex but when he meets Rosalie Ronaldi, Nick recognizes a challenge when he sees one. It's not just the woman's voluptuous body that he's craving, it's also that Rosalie surprises him at every turn. Usually he's the one to give the talk on a first date about how he's not looking for marriage but is interested in a monogamous sexual relationship. Yet to Nick's dropped-jawed surprise, it's Rosalie who delivers this speech to him. In essence, they're the same. Both are career driven people with the accompanying fear of being tied down but in order to get their pestering Italian families off their back, they need a stand in.

There's only one draw back to Nick dating Rosalie, she thinks he's a mechanic...

Nick is not the type of man that Rosalie is used to dating. One, he's alarmingly attractive. Two, he embodies that arrogant take charge - I am man you are woman - personality that sets her teeth on edge. And three, she's breaking all her rules to be with him. These shortcomings can be excused with fact that the man is an insanely good kisser, he doesn't want to get married, and she's never been so sexually satisfied in her life. Rosalie's friend Gena would call these points a one way ticket to Fallinginlovetown which is then followed quickly by Brokenheartland, but Rosalie shakes this observation off with a shrug of her shoulders, for now...

Gena, a bit overprotective where her best friend is concerned, man-handles her brother-in-law and city cop to do a background check on Nick the mechanic. It's not seconds after the discovery that Gena is telling Rosalie that her Nick is none other then the super rich Dominick Romeo. But at this point, the unveiling of Nick's true identity does little to ruffle Rosalie's feathers. She can completely understand why he would want to keep his name a secret and honestly, they're just sleeping together. No harm, no foul. She'll wait for Nick to tell her when he's ready, if they're even still together by that point.

Meanwhile, Nick is discovering a bit about Rosalie that he's not too happy about. Rosalie works as an interim Chief Financial Officer for companies that are in trouble. Her job is to pull them out of unfavorable financial situations and turn them around and into profitable companies. Unfortunately, Nick discovers that Rosalie is turning around Premier Motors, a sports car dealership that Nick has coveted for years. He knew that the owner's son would run it into the ground and he's also been quietly passing along rumors of the dealerships impending collapse. The last thing he wants is for Rosalie to save the dealership.

Its when Rosalie comes down hard with Pneumonia that her and Nick's relationship begins to become way more complicated then just bed partners. Seriously sick, Nick drops his life to give Rosalie round the clock care. He shrugs off her potent barbs over his demands to take medicine and her incessant questions as to why he's even bothering in the first place. Nick also fends off her nosy and often times, rude mother. To top it all, he cleans her entire apartment, stocks her refrigerator and makes sure that her dog, Dave, feels loved. Like front cover claims, Nick Romeo is a Domestic God.

It's not long before Nick and Rosalie fall into a comfortable routine. To Rosalie's surprise, Nick is living with her - has been living with her for nearly three months. It's definitely a first for both. Also, Rosalie is starting to wonder when Nick will come clean about his identity. At first, his omission was understandable, but now that they're practically living together, Rosalie can't determine why he wishes to keep up the charade.

Nick knows that he's on the path to disaster with Rosalie and the thought of losing her makes his gut clench. When did he fall in love with her? How did he fall in love her? These realizations throw him through a flame covered hoop but now that he knows, he's going to keep Rosalie. With every intention of telling Rosalie all, his plan backfires and instead of getting on his knees and begging her to be with him forever, Nick walks out with the new intention of never seeing Rosalie again.

'Romeo Romeo' was a fun and entertaining read. There are many laugh out loud moments and Rosalie's family is nothing short of hilarious. I also couldn't help but fall in love with Dave, Rosalie's dog. He's very integral to the plot and I've always been partial to stories with animal sidekicks.

Nick was an amazing hero even if he is structured too much around the fantasy. But hey, this is romance right? Having a "Domestic God" is every woman's wish. A man who cooks, cleans, and takes care of your every emotional and physical need. Who is this man and where can I find him? (Just kidding honey! You know I love you!)

On the flip side, I thought Nick's giving nature was also his downfall in that I thought he gave too much for very little in return. And just straight out - I could not see what he loved so much about Rosalie. Ultimately, I think she presented a challenge. For the first time in Nick's life he's presented with a new relationship dynamic in that he's not the man, Rosalie is. And yeah she's smart and funny, but she never inquires about his life or who he is and I don't think she would have had the heart to care for Nick as he did for her when she became so sick.

I understand, appreciate and celebrate the independent woman but Rosalie surpassed independence and instead embodied belligerent stubbornness. But I will concede the fact that her reasons for fearing marriage and commitment were well formed and expected. Even still though, Rosalie put up one hell of fight against Nick and that angered me on several occasions. It could merely be that I'm simply not the same woman as Rosalie nor do I share the same goals, but there were just many times that I wanted to beat some sense into her.

Although, even with all my dislikes, I really loved the essence of 'Romeo Romeo'. It's an amazing debut and its also inspired me to pick up 'Too Hot To Handle' which is about Rosalie's sister and Nick's best friend. Shall be fun!

Review: Visions of Heat

Review: Visions of Heat by Nalini Singh

Used to cold silence, Faith NightStar is suddenly being tormented by dark visions of blood and murder. A bad sign for anyone, but worse for Faith, an F-Psy with the highly sought after ability to predict the future. Then the visions show her something even more dangerous-aching need...exquisite pleasure. But so powerful is her sight, so fragile the state of her mind, that the very emotions she yearns to embrace could be the end of her.

Changeling Vaughn D'Angelo can take either man or jaguar form, but it is his animal side that is overwhelmingly drawn to Faith. The jaguar's instinct is to claim this woman it finds so utterly fascinating and the man has no argument. But while Vaughn craves sensation and hungers to pleasure Faith in every way, desire is a danger that could snap the last threads of her sanity. And there are Psy who need Faith's sight for their own purposes. They must keep her silenced-and keep her from Vaughn...

Book Two in the Psy/Changeling Series

Faith Nightstar is a billion dollar asset. As a Cardinal F-Psy, Faith has the rare gift of foresight and the most powerful known to date in the race making her very valuable to her PsyClan - a familial grouping of Psy that align themselves together for business purposes. Since she was three years of age, Faith has been forecasting and her predictions almost always come to fruition unless purposefully diverted.

Due to the fact that F-Psy have the highest rate of insanity, even with the implementation of Silence, they are kept in complete isolation and are rarely seen in public. In addition, their conditioning to Silence is one of the most intense within the Psy for they need complete and total lack of emotion to generate their forecasts of business trends and therefore the further growth in power for their race. Although at twenty-four, much earlier then her predicted collapse at fifty years, Faith is beginning to feel the deterioration of her mind. In the last few months she's been receiving dark and evil visions and awakening from night terrors so intense that she's soaked in sweat. While her home in Tahoe, California is monitored by M-Psy (medical designation), Faith has taken to sleeping in her bed rather then the red chair where she forecasts and which also monitors her every physical move and condition. If the M-Psy were to know of her night sweats, they would be performing a physical exam with no questions asked.

When Faith is contacted by her father and informed that her half-sister, Marine, has been murdered by strangulation, Faith knows now that the dark visions she's been experiencing was the foresight of the murder. Wanting answers from someone who will not report her to the center for reconditioning, Faith decides that she's going to seek out Sascha Duncan, the Psy that cut her link from the Net. Although there is a ban on any Psy making contact with the defective Sascha Duncan, Faith feels that Sascha can give her the answers and possibly even the knowledge on how to block these dark visions.

Vaughn D'Angelo is a jaguar and a sentinel of the DarkRiver leopard pack. Although he's a jaguar and more solitary then his leopard cousins, they adopted him on that long ago day when he was ten years old, broken and alone. Abandoned by his parents, Vaughn tried everything he could to save his then seven year old sister but she died in mere days of a broken heart. Surviving in his leopard form, Vaughn aimlessly wonders into DarkRiver territory. Due to the fact that he saw so much heartache and terror in his jaguar form, it took a long time until he was ready to shift into his human half. For that, Vaughn is closer to his beast then most making him very dangerous.

When curiosity brings his cat to the edges of Tahoe, he's immediately intrigued by a house that's surround by fences, surveillance, and Psy guards. He doesn't have to wait long to glimpse whomever is inside because soon a smallish woman with long flaming red hair agilely picks her way across the lawn and over the fence without tripping any alarm. But when he realizes that the female Psy is heading straight into DarkRiver territory, his protective instincts flare and he soon stops her in her tracks demanding her purpose as only a highly feral jaguar can do.

As a known loner and with every intention of maintaining his distance, no one is more surprised then Vaughn when Faith arouses his possessive instincts. He can't stop himself from breathing in her scent and touching her at every opportunity. While Faith warns him profusely that his intimate actions will undoubtedly cause her to go into seizures, (for she's seen actual recordings of these types of affects on other F-Psy) Vaughn is governed by the pure instinct that his Psy needs to be able to handle his touch. He senses a back bone of steele within Faith and that her physical reactions to him of unconsciousness is only her brain convincing her of this fact and that in truth she can withstand his possessive male onslaught. And sure enough, with each subtle caress, Faith grows stronger against her body's trained reactions.

What Faith learns and comes to believe from Sascha is that her race, while proclaiming that Silence has guaranteed the lack of violence, the Council is actually hiding the real truth: That Psy killers are not only abundant, but essential to the maintenance of the PsyNet - the psychic plain that all Psy connect with for necessary biofeedback and communication. Without these killers, the violence they contain and excert would bleed directly into the Net and cause many Psy to go insane.

In addition, Faith learns that previous to the implementation of Silence, F-Psy not only predicted commerce but they also predicted and provided the knowledge for the prevention of possible murders and natural disasters. With Silence having directed Faith's gift so efficiently towards business trends, she was never properly trained on how to block the dark visions she's forecasting now for with her total lack of emotion, they never should have found her to begin with.

With the death of Council Member Enrique, the Council is looking at candidates for his replacement and Faith is approached for the position. Having an F-Psy member would not only grant the Council nearly unlimited power, but F-Psy are also known to be adept communicators with the NetMind - a sentient being that organizes the immense data of the PsyNet and monitors all Psy. When controlled by the Council, the NetMind can seek out rebels within the Psy and report other findings for their benefit.

Faith needs to make a life changing decision. Not only is the Council making it's demands but if she defects from the Psy the Nightstar PsyClan will loose countless jobs and untold millions without her forecasts. She can either move into an incredible political position that can give her the tools to possibly help her race or she can cut her link to the PsyNet and belong exclusively to the jaguar that has stolen her heart.

Having already mated to Faith, Vaughn senses and rages at her indecision. Changelings only mate once and he could potentially be tied to a woman that may never accept the mating bond. Vaughn is not willing to let his Psy go without a fight but when powers greater than him pull hard on Faith, he may have to accept that he'll end up sleeping with the enemy. For if Faith chooses to stay with her race and become Council, Vaughn won't hesitate to come when she calls.

Out of the entire Psy/Changeling series 'Visions of Heat' is my least favorite for reasons that are difficult to pinpoint. I think that it really may come down to the fact that I didn't really connect with either the hero or heroine. Vaughn was supposed to be a solitary closed off male but then Faith comes along and before he even knows her, he's already pushing her hard to acknowledge his possession. This can be contributed to the fact that the mating is done on such a basic and primal level that it really just changes these males at a drop of a hat in some respects. Although with Lucas and his mating to Sascha, I didn't feel that he did a complete one-eighty with his personality.

Faith, in my opinion, was a weak heroine and I didn't really understand where her emotion came from. She based her entire thought process on the warnings from others rather than experiencing her own mistakes. Faith believed so strongly in what she's been told that she actually convinces her body to go into seizures when Vaughn touches her. With regards to emotion, Faith was a perfect Psy right up until the dark visions and that's when she starts questioning her life and her race. I also didn't think that she deliberated long or hard about giving up her life with the Psy and mating with Vaughn but rather she simply had a knowing, all of which led me to feel that her choices and her personality were inconsistent.

In contrast, I think that 'Visions of Heat' is integral to the Psy/Changeling series. The Council and it's members motivations were given more light and we're also given a more in depth look and understanding of the PsyNet. I really enjoyed learning about the sentient being that is the NetMind and how it has emotions. The way it communicates with Faith is beyond interesting. 'Visions of Heat' also unveils a new Psy - the Arrow Psy which are highly combative and lethal. They're also supposedly under the Council's thumb. And lastly there is Kaleb Krycheck. Who is he? Is he good or evil? Even as far as book six, Kaleb's motivations are still unknown but Nalini gives us access to his POV which must be for a reason, right?

Review: Slave To Sensation

Review: Slave To Sensation by Nalini Singh

In a world that denies emotions, where the ruling Psy punish any sign of desire, Sascha Duncan must conceal the feelings that brand her as flawed. To reveal them would be to sentence herself to the horror of “rehabilitation”— the complete psychic erasure of everything she ever was….

Both human and animal, Lucas Hunter is a Changeling hungry for the very sensations the Psy disdain. After centuries of uneasy co-existence, these two races are now on the verge of war over the brutal murders of several Changeling women. Lucas is determined to find the Psy killer who butchered his packmate, and Sascha is his ticket into their closely guarded society. But he soon discovers that this ice-cold Psy is very capable of passion—and that the animal in him is fascinated by her. Caught between their conflicting worlds, Lucas and Sascha must remain bound to their identities—or sacrifice everything for a taste of darkest temptation…

Book One in the Psy/Changeling Series

Over one hundred years ago, the Psy race conditioned its members to become Silent. Due to the high rate of insanity and sociopathic tendencies, it was discovered that with Silence - with the eradication of all emotion - the Psy could be safe within their own minds. Although with the implementation of Silence, many Psy were lost or forgotten. But now, six generations under the Protocol Silence, the Psy are the most powerful race on Earth.

Sascha Duncan, a Cardinal Psy, is on the verge of mental collapse. Although her night-sky eyes proclaim her to be one of the most powerful in the Psy race, her powers are embarrassingly unspecified. Although she has a number Psy abilities that range throughout the Gradient, the Psy measuring scale of mental strength, she shows no superior power in any specific area.

Daughter of Nikita Duncan, a member of the Psy Council and therefore above the law, Sascha's faults are doubly humiliating. But it's not the humiliation that is causing her mind to crack at the most basic levels. Something is wrong with her and for this very wrongness, Sascha could be slated for rehabilitation with the hope of death or life as a vegetable.

In the midst of a mental crisis, Sascha is faced with Lucas Hunter, leopard alpha of DarkRiver - one of the most powerful predatory packs in the western half of the United States. For the first time in history, Psy are embarking on a business relationship with the Changelings and its Sascha's job to oversee the completion of the very lucrative project. Unfortunately, the job requires Sascha to work very closely with Lucas Hunter and unknowingly to her, this pleases Lucas until no end.

Lucas Hunter is on a mission. He needs to infiltrate the PsyNet - the psychic plane of interconnected Psy minds. There he hopes to discover the identity of a Psy serial murderer that butchered one of his females and recently kidnapped a female wolf from their allies, the SnowDancer Pack. Because the killer struck DarkRiver first, Lucas has the lead but with the added pressure of the killers pattern of holding his victims for seven days before dealing the death blow, Lucas knows he only has so much time before the wolves go for blood, with or without DarkRiver. With this Psy/Changeling project, Lucas hopes to interrogate one of the Psy to find the information that he needs. When he's astoundingly assigned his own personal Cardinal Psy, Lucas has struck gold with Sascha Duncan. But there is also something uniquely different with this Psy that has his panther prowling very close to the surface. Sascha Duncan is not a normal Psy and Lucas has every intention of discovering her secrets.

Changelings view the Psy with disdain. They abhor their silence for it runs in complete contradiction to their own highly emotional and sensual lifestyles. For those Psy that are fully embedded in Silence, they give off a repulsive metallic stink that generally prevents changelings from even wanting to be near them. But with Sascha, Lucas doesn't pick up this stink but instead draws into his lungs pure luscious woman. Although he knows that Sascha is a Cardinal and may very well have the potential to liquefy his brains with a single thought, he can't help but antagonize his Psy to get any kind of rise out of her. Amazingly he catches many glimpses of the Sascha beneath her pristine and icy Psy shell making his intrigue even more rampant.

Sascha's already crumbling shields crack even more with the emotional onslaught brought upon her by the changelings. While Lucas's constant touch or verbal provocation is on purpose, the other changelings can't help their impact on Sascha. They're just being themselves as changelings who need and desire touch and love and community. It's natural for them to bring Sascha into their lives and it also helps that Lucas's scent is all over her.

In an effort to rid her lustful thoughts for Lucas, Sascha purposefully dreams of making love with the infuriatingly sensual leopard alpha. In her dreams she can be who she is on the inside but unknowingly to Sascha, she's invited Lucas's conscience into her dreams as well and he experiences the Sascha that he longs for. These dreams also have Lucas bestowing skin privilages to Sascha which allows her touch him anywhere she desires. As their passions run hot and the mating dance is instigated, Sascha soon has a hungry panther looking to claim her for life.

With the unpresidented event of a Psy/Changeling business venture, it's not long before Sascha strikes the notice of Psy Council member, Enrique Santano. A cool and cunning Psy, Enrique requests that Sascha give him any information she can retrieve from the changelings. Since the Psy have distanced themselves from what they've considered lowly animals, Enrique wishes to update the records. Yet there is something that whispers of betrayal if Sascha were to unveil all that she's learned while being with changelings. Some how the leopards have gained her complete loyalty and its not just because of her fascination with Lucas, some where deep inside Sascha has craved touch and emotion on such a critical level that she can't stand even to be amongst her own race. When she finally discovers from Lucas that he's hunting a Psy killer, she first denies the thought. Silence was to have wiped all violence from the race and if the Council has been hiding killers then it goes against everything that the Psy have held true for over a hundred years. What's worse, is that if there is a Psy killer, then not only does Councilor Enrique know of it, but her own mother has knowledge as well. To be the flesh and blood of woman who is hiding killers brings upon the ultimate humiliation.

With mere hours remaining until the inevitable death of the abducted female wolf, Sascha decides that if the cracks in her shields will lead her to death then she may as well go down in flames. She'll do what is necessary to trap the Psy killer and learn his identity for the changelings so they may seek their vengeance. When Lucas learns that the end result of her sacrifice will be death, he rails hard against her decision. Although his loyalty is to Pack, he's learned that Sascha is his destined mate and that puts her above everyone and everything. He'd rather the victim die than his Sascha. But what Lucas is learning real quickly is that even an alpha with his power can't convince Sascha away from the path she's set.

The first book in a complex paranormal series can be tricky and at times are a hit but most likely a miss with readers. There is always that terror of information overload where the novel sags from intense world building. With 'Slave to Sensation', the novel flows beautifully with an even balance of world building and romance.

In my opinion, Nalini Singh is one of the masters of sexual tension and while I wouldn't describe her books as erotic, you're guaranteed an intense build up to sweet release.

Nalini's heroes have all the requisite traits of power and physical appeal but what makes her changeling heroes so unique is their animal intensity. Of course they're dominant in the extreme but they're also driven incredibly hard to protect and cherish. I particularly love how they ground themselves with touch and generally that need compels Singh's males to grasp the napes of their mates in a dominant but gentle hold. Of course this maneuver rises the hackles of any independent woman when faced with such blatant possessiveness and thus instant tension. Not only are these males proprietary but they're also extremely sensual, moving with feline grace and impressive dexterity. While their human half gives the illusion of civility, these males are not human and their beasts are never far from the surface.

And bonus, Nalini pens some amazing and admirable heroines. All are strong either mentally or physically with huge hearts and the willingness to sacrifice all if necessary. While they may not be as domineering as their heroes, these woman can easily tangle with their male counterparts. They certainly don't make their taming easy to the chagrin of their heroes.

'Slave to Sensation' starts the Psy/Changeling series off with a bang that leaves you thirsting for more. While each one of her stories are unique, I can't claim a favorite above the rest. In each novel I'm in the absolute moment with her characters and I fall in love so readily and easily that it's a testament to the nature of her hero/heroine pairings that I can't name one that I'd hold above the rest. Also, each installment gives a little more and slowly secrets are unveiled and intentions are realized. You fall in love with all three races and in some way or another you identify with their motivations whether they be evil or good.

My last thought is to anyone who hasn't read this series, I ask: What are you waiting for??!

Review: Branded by Fire

Review: Branded by Fire by Nalini Singh

Though DarkRiver sentinel Mercy is feeling the pressure to mate, she savagely resists when Riley Kincaid, a lieutenant from the SnowDancer pack, tries to possess her. The problem is not simply that he pushes her buttons; the problem is that he’s a wolf, she’s a cat, and they’re both used to being on top.

But when a brilliant changeling researcher is kidnapped from DarkRiver territory, Mercy and Riley must work together to track the young man—before his shadowy captors decide he’s no longer useful. Along the way, the two dominants may find that submitting to one another uncovers not just a deadly conspiracy, but a passion so raw that it’ll leave them both branded by fire…

Book Six in the Psy/Changeling Series

I've been awaiting the release of 'Branded by Fire' with intense impatience for many reasons. The first and the obvious being that I just wanted more of this author. But an even more important and more intense desire to read this novel began upon the moment that I learned that it would feature two Changelings as the hero and heroine. While I've loved the Changeling/human and Changeling/Psy love matches, I've been aching to see the mating dance between two Changelings. They're wildly intense and highly sexual creatures and beyond that, I love the dynamics of pack life and this pairing would ensure that the novel would be saturated in it.

Riley and Mercy have made annoying one another an additional job requirement to their many responsibilities as pack liaisons. Since the wolves of SnowDancer and the leopards of DarkRiver made a blood pact and became allies, Riley and Mercy were put in charge of interpack communications and to soothe any pack related fur. The problem is that Riley and Mercy don't necessarily play nice with one another. Both are extremely dominant and hold identical positions within the highest ranks of their packs. While Mercy is flamboyant, opinionated, outspoken and daring, Riley is calm, steadfast, quiet and cunning.

As a dominant female and sentinel of the DarkRiver pack, Mercy grudgingly accepts the fact that she may never mate. While the human in her may love with all her heart, her leopard won't be able to stand being tied so strongly to another. This happens occasionally with very dominant and independent females of the pack. But at this moment, Mercy doesn't care if the man's her mate, she just needs release on such a primal level that all other Changelings are picking up on her heat and when "stick-in-the-mud" Riley Kincaid steps out of the trees, Mercy is more than willing to take him on. She could use a bit of violence to cool her need. But when Riley begins tempting Mercy on a highly sexual level during their sparring, it takes her but a moment to dispel any leopard instincts to turn away the enemy wolf.

“Yield.” His nose was almost touching hers.
“You wish.” She smirked into chocolate-dark eyes. “Come closer.”
“So you can bite me?” A flash of teeth. “First you yield. Then I’ll come closer.”
“Not on your life.” If she yielded, she’d be acknowledging his dominance, at least for tonight.
“Then I guess I’ve have to make you.”
“Try it.” Smiling, she went for his throat and almost had him, when — using a move that was all sorts of illegal — he flipped her again so her front pressed into the leaf-laden ground, her wrists still locked in his iron grip and pinned above her head. “Cheater.”
“So says the woman who tried to kick my balls into my throat,” he pointed out, even as he licked the salt off the skin of her neck in a lazy and highly provocative move.
“I’m going to kill you.” It was more hiss than sound.
He bit her.
In the soft, sensitive place between neck and shoulder.
She felt her entire body shiver from the inside out at the blatant show of dominance. “Stop it.” It came out husky, nothing like the rejection she wanted it to be.
He took his mouth from her. “I’ve pinned you.”
“That’s wolf shit. I’m a cat.”
“You’re still trapped under me.” He nuzzled at her throat. “And you smell all hot and wet and ready.” His voice was dropping, going wolf on her.
And the heat between her thighs was turning into a pulsing drumbeat. Her stomach twisted in a vicious wave of need. God she was hungry, so sensually hungry. And Riley had taken her, his hold unbreakable. At that moment, the leopard didn’t care that he wasn’t a cat. It just cared that he was strong, sexy and aroused.

Branded by Fire © Nalini Singh

Not only are Mercy's sensual curves and feline nature a physical draw for Riley, it's also the fact that she's the one person who can break him out of his shell. Not very long ago Riley's sister, Brenna, was kidnapped and horribly abused by a Psy killer. Although Brenna was rescued and now happily mated, he still feels the guilt of her abduction and mind rape. Dreams plague him where Brenna is found dead rather than alive and ever since that horrific time of his life, Riley has closed himself off from others. While his cool demeanor may keep others at bay, it only serves to instigate Mercy's need to crack through his brooding moments of guilt and shame.

It's not long before Riley proves that he's just a tad more dominant than Mercy. And while this knowledge raises Mercy's hackles it also ignites her sexual desperation for the wolf and besides, he makes her cat purr. But when the mating dance blooms, the two must face some serious ramifications to their potential mating. For one, they shift into different animals. How will that affect their offspring if they can even have offspring? And more importantly, how will this affect their packs? Both Riley and Mercy are blood bound to their alphas and neither has the desire to leave their respective packs but if the mating bond is complete, one will undergo the heartbreak of their blood bond snapping apart from their alpha. Because Riley is the more dominant of the two, most likely it will be Mercy that will be forced away from her pack by the mating bond.

In the end, it's the female's decision whether or not to complete the mating bond and this causes the males to be a bit more feral than usual. Given the fact that Mercy holds the same rank within DarkRiver as Riley does in SnowDancer, there will be many times where both must face death. This poses a huge trust issue on Mercy's end for Riley. If his overbearing protective urges come into play, he could very well suffocate Mercy's leopard. Mercy will not drop her position in Pack and it's a real testament of Riley's promises to her when he walks into battle beside his mate.

Throughout all this emotional turmoil, added to the mix is the rise of the Human Alliance. No longer content with being known world round as the weakest link, the humans will not tolerate be looked down upon any longer. When launching a massive strike against the Psy Council members, the Alliance steps on the toes of the DarkRiver and SnowDancer packs thus rising their hackles and their claws. When juveniles from both packs are kidnapped, Riley and Mercy must put aside their mating dance and locate their packmates before its death that they find.

'Branded by Fire' lived up to every impossibly high expectation I set for it. In fact, it obliterated those expectations and rose above them into an entirely new realm of greatness. It's hard to imagine the Psy/Changeling series reaching an ever greater height of amazement but truly, this author continues to pleasantly shock me time and again.

I loved Mercy. It's not often that I fall in love with a heroine, but Mercy embodied traits that sang to my reader heart. She's strong, protective and intelligent and she never hurts anyone who is weaker than her, which is a lot of people. I love that she had courage and although mating to Riley was frightening for her, she trusted her heart. Mercy is a proud leopard but she didn't let that stop her from going to Riley when she's made a mistake and apologizing. Needless to say, Mercy earned my respect as well as my heart.

Riley. What a hero! He had so many shadows in his soul and its Mercy who shines some much needed light into his heart. Sometimes I've felt that in other novels, the heroine was more than the hero deserved, but not in this case. Riley deserved every inch of Mercy's soul. I also loved that although he was more dominant and frightfully protective, he gave Mercy freedom. He may have faltered a few times but in the end, he'd rather revel in the freedom of Mercy's soul than contain it. It showed depth in his love for Mercy that he could fight every dominant instinct and not smother Mercy's leopard. Riley has no wish to break her, he just wants to love her. Definitely a true hero.

The only draw back to this book is that it may not be a suitable start for new readers of the Psy/Changeling series. I even found myself confused at times since it has been a while since I read the book prior to 'Branded by Fire'. This wasn't enough incentive for me to drop the grade but I highly recommend new readers to start at the beginning of the series with 'Slave to Sensation'.
