Review: The Darkest Night

Review: The Darkest Night by Gena Showalter

All her life, Ashlyn Darrow has been tormented by voices from the past. To end the nightmare, she has come to Budapest seeking help from men rumored to have supernatural abilities, not knowing she'll be swept into the arms of Maddox, their most dangerous member - a man trapped in a hell of his own.

Neither can resist the instant hunger that calms their torments...and ignites an irresistible passion. But every heated touch and burning kiss will edge them closer to destruction - and a soul-shattering test of love...

Lords of the Underworld Book 1

Centuries ago, a band of warriors and guardians to the Gods attempted to teach their charges a lesson. Pandora, while a gifted warrior in her own right, was thought by the warriors to not be qualified to handle the task of guarding dimOuniak - a box made by the Goddess Oppression to contain the horrors of the world. To prove this fact and avenge their wounded egos, the warriors stole the box from Pandora and opened it, thereby unleashing it's bound demons upon the world. As punishment for their arrogance, the Gods cursed each warrior with a demon and to be forever bound to one another. Thus, the Lords of the Underworld was born.

Maddox, keeper of Violence, has never known peace. Goaded constantly by the demon Violence, Maddox burns with the need to maim, destroy and kill. When Violence first entered his body, Maddox was consumed by the demon's desires and in a fit of violent rage, killed Pandora by sinking his blade into her stomach six times. As an additional punishment for this heinous act, the Gods bestowed upon Maddox a death-curse. Each night at midnight, Maddox is doomed to die in the same fashion as Pandora. Killed with a blade to the stomach by his fellow Lord, Reyes, keeper of Pain, and then brought to the underworld by Lucien, keeper of Death, to burn in the fires of hell.

Ashlyn Darrow is suffering from her own inner demons as well. While others consider her ability to hear conversations that have taken place wherever she stands as a potential gift, all Ashlyn wants to do is silence the noise. To think her own thoughts rather than being berated by others. She does utilize her gift for her job at the Institute. An organization charged with the task of watching the supernatural and stepping in when a threat is discovered. In Budapest, at the Institutes direction, Ashlyn has come to listen for the "angels" - a group of beings that provide generously to the city and keep the threat of crime very low. Their generosity has earned the peoples adoration. In the hopes of learning how to control the voices, Ashlyn ventures to their castle against direct orders from her boss. Unfortunately for Ashlyn, her presence is met with fierce hostility and suspicion.

As long as the Lords have existed on Earth, there has been a faction of men and women bent on their destruction known as Hunters. A few hundred years ago the Hunters were successful in murdering one of the Lords: Baden, keeper of Distrust. Lured by Bait, a female seductress and skilled in the way of tempting a Lord, was able to build Baden's obsession to the point of distraction while the Hunters lay in wait to attack when the Lord least expected it. Unfortunately it was proven upon Baden's death that while the Lord may have died, his demon lived on without its human host, reeking havoc before disappearing to the unknown.

Ashlyn is immediately suspected to be bait by both Maddox and his fellow Lords but she could care less about their hostility. All she knows is that while in Maddox's presence, she can finally bask in silence. Somehow this fierce man can hush the voices in her head. For the first time she can hear the breeze whisper through the trees and relish in the pant of her savior while his hot breath fans across her cheeks. Bliss, at last.

For some reason, despite the very real fact that Ashlyn may indeed be Bait, Maddox can't let the girl go. When she screams and cries over his nightly deaths, Maddox starts to feel doubts over Ashlyn's association with Hunters. It's not long before he resolves to have the human for himself, at least to use and sink into for pleasure before releasing her. But when Ashlyn is accidentally poisoned, Maddox realizes that he'll do anything, even be at the mercy of the Gods to heal her and save her from death.

Ashlyn feels herself falling in love with Maddox with every hour they spend together. Even after her revelation that she hears voices, Maddox instantly accepts her ability instead of looking upon her with suspicion for having heard everything he's ever said. Although it's undeniable that he's happy that for some reason Ashlyn can't hear the Lords and their past conversations, he's still accepts and pleasures Ashlyn for who she is.

Amongst their blossoming love, new developments have happened in the once desolate world of the Lords. Some of their brethren have returned. When Baden had been murdered all those years ago, a blood feud burst from the rage of the Lords. While half were intent on killing each and every Hunter, the other half only longed for peace. It's Maddox and his friends that left Greece for a peaceful life in Budapest. But with these returning Lords comes the long disdained Hunters. They are crawling all over Budapest in the hopes of capturing the Lords until they locate the lost Pandora's Box. When they find it, the Hunters intend to open it, thereby re-locking the demons within the box's confines and subsequently killing their human hosts.

'The Darkest Night' was an entertaining and fast read. Don't laugh! I know it took me over a week to finish it, but when I did have a chance to sit down and read, the pages flew. Maddox was definitely a drool-worthy hero. Wonderfully violent with split-second personality shifts from moderately angry to extremely furious, Maddox is strength personified. But his wicked physique thankfully doesn't match with a dull headed man. Maddox is sensual and unfailing gentle with Ashlyn. All that pent up violence is leashed and channelled instead toward the one goal of pleasuring his heroine. Gotta love that in a hero.

I enjoyed Ashlyn too. She's not one of those insipid heroines nor did she commit any "Too Stupid To Live" moments. She also makes the ultimate sacrifice to break Maddox's death-curse. One has to admire her for that.

I also have to give Gena Showalter credit where it's certainly due. For book one in a paranormal series, the pacing was good and the reader isn't overloaded with world building. She focuses the absolute majority of page time to Maddox and Ashlyn.

Unfortunately there just wasn't anything that snagged my complete interest and held it. The novel was bit predictable and while I liked the hero and heroine, I didn't feel any real emotional connection to them. The novel didn't have that impact upon my heart that I've attained with other paranormal reads. But again, it was enjoyable but perhaps forgettable.

Reviewette: Gilt and Midnight

Reviewette: Gilt and Midnight by Megan Hart, Naughty Bits Anthology

Back Cover Blurb: (From Author's Website)

Word of Miracula's unique beauty is known far throughout the land. But when
a dark fairie curses her with Desire, it is news of her insatiable lust that
attracts dozens would-be suitors to her door, as one by one they attempt to
break the curse by bringing her utter fulfillment.

Mira, the undisputed beauty of the land with half her face fair of eye and hair and the other half dark as midnight, almost had the perfect fairy tale. She lived with her beloved adopted parents that showered her with all the love and affection that she could ever have wished for. Yet when her rich and proud parents cast a beggar from their table they quickly discover the severity of their actions.

The beggar reveals herself as the Dark Fairie. Mira's parents, desperate to save their daughter from the curse that the Dark Fairie will undoubtedly bestow, begs to the fairie's heart. But the Dark Fairie says that she will not curse Mira for her parent's unthoughtfullness, she will instead gift her with desire. Only when Mira finds complete satisfaction will her parents be saved from ruin.

Immediately upon the Dark Fairy's departure, Mira is overcome by desire. It's not long before suitors near and far arrive to tempt the beautiful Mira and see if they can complete her. Yet no matter how many orgasms that Mira achieves, each coupling ends with her feeling empty. Innocence lost and her parents going mad from losing all the wealth they have come to horde to sudden taxes, Mira is desperate to find completion.

Three months after the Dark Fairie's gift, two men walk into Mira's garden. One fair and one dark. Gerard and Alain have a long history together. Brothers of each others hearts, they were once the best of friends until the Dark Fairie ruined their bond. Now cursed with desire that will not abate until they complete a woman. Hearing of Mira's own gift, the men approach her. Gerard, masterful and requires submissiveness from his partners, commands Mira to serve him. Although his slaps upon her rear sting, Mira finds great pleasure in serving him. Yet she finds the opposite kind of pleasure with Alain. With him, Mira can be mistress and orders Alain about to do even the most mundane of tasks to prove his devotion.

But despite the fact that Mira finds sexual gratification from both men individually, she has yet to feel complete. The men, wanting to fill her emptiness must overcome their own rift to give the beautiful maiden her satisfaction.

'Gilt and Midnight' wasn't what I have come to expect from Megan Hart. While romance isn't necessarily what the author is known for delivering, there is still her talent of evoking considerable emotion into her characters and thereby into her readers. 'Gilt and Midnight' holds no romance. But I'm not knocking it for that reason. 'Naughty Bits' is an anthology of EROTIC shorts so the lack of romance is now doubly expected. But if a story is lacking romance then I at least expect emotion. While still beautifully written, the short lacked any sort of emotion. It is erotic, that's a certainty, yet I expected more from the author that I've admired for a long time. An author that is just so brilliant, in my opinion, with bringing beauty to real life.

Review: Lover Avenged

Review: Lover Avenged by J.R. Ward

Caldwell, NY, has long been the battleground for the vampires and their enemies, the Lessening Society. It’s also where Rehvenge has staked out his turf as a drug lord and notorious nightclub that caters to the rich and heavily armed. His shadowy reputation is exactly why he’s approached to kill Wrath, the Blind King, and leader of the Brotherhood. Rehvenge has always kept his distance from the Brotherhood, even though his sister is married to a member. Because he’s a sympath, his identity is a deadly secret- the revelation of which will
result in his banishment to a colony for sociopaths. And as plots within and outside the Brotherhood take their toll against Rehvenge, he turns to the only source of light in a darkening world- Elhena, a vampire untouched by the corruption that has its hold on him- and the only thing standing between him and
eternal destruction.

Black Dagger Brotherhood Book 7

Rehvenge, a.k.a. the Reverend, is the most glamorous baddest of bad boys in J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood world. Drug Lord, pimp and owner of the night club, ZeroSum, it's not unusual for Rehv to pull down 200K a night. Keeping his Chosen mother in the lap of luxury is expensive, but it's nothing compared to the monetary demands of his blackmailer, the princess, for Rehvenge has a secret. Beneath the sable coat, couture suits and mohawk, this amethyst-eyed vampire is half sympath. Also known as sin-eaters, sympaths have evolved from their vampire genes into cerebral beings. They are complete sociopaths and feed off the emotions of others. For these and many other reasons, sympaths were banished to a colony in upper New York. Any sympath discovered in the general population must be reported and deported. For a half breed like Rehv, deportation to the colony would mean torture followed by death. Sympaths despise weakness of any kind and a half sympath would surely be deemed weak.

For the last twenty-five years, Rehv has been blackmailed by his half sister, the princess and mate to his uncle the sympath king. Threatening to not only reveal his dirty secret but the same secret that's being hidden by Rehv's head of security at ZeroSum, the female Xhex. In order to protect the ones he loves, Rehv has sold his body and his soul to the princess by whoring himself out to her one night a month and using the drug profits to pay her to keep her mouth closed. The monthly experiences are horrific and Rehv feels that no matter how many times he washes, he'll never again be clean. The deaths of so many can't be washed away and the taint of the princess runs deep.

Rehvenge, despite his sociopath sympath genes, at his core he's intrinsically good. While he doesn't believe it, it's clear to not only the reader, but to those close to Rehv that he'd easily sell his soul to protect those he loves. The proof positive is in his dealings with the princess. But Rehv is blind and considers himself a male of no worth. He has lived his entire existence with the knowledge they he'll never be normal and he'll never have love for no female of worth would ever want him. Except maybe one.

The only drug that Rehv acquires through legitimate means is his dopamine. The drug acts as a suppressant of his sympath genes but it also has dire side effects by not only numbing his entire body, but rendering him impotent as well. Rehv's nurse at Havers Clinic, Ehlena, has always intrigued him. He can tell that they share something in common: Loneliness.

Ehlena, once the daughter of a prominent member of the glymera - the vampire upper class - is now penniless with all available finances being used to help her father and his condition. Suffering from severe schizophrenia, Ehlena's father requires round the clock care. With the onset of his disease, her father lost everything. Not only his social standing and wealth but also his shellan who committed suicide. Ehlena is all that he has left and she does everything she can to make him comfortable. Living in a crumbling rental house, all Ehlena knows is work and caring for her father. Mentally and physically exhausted she can't seem to take her own advice that she delivers to patients in similar situations. But one day, the patient Rehvenge is able to shake her out of life's stupor.

The nurses at Havers Clinic have never particularly liked Rehvenge and that works just fine for him. But for some reason he wants the perfectly starched and coiffed nurse to see him. In classic Rehv attitude, his flirting is more like blatant sexual aggression. It's almost as though he doesn't even take his own words seriously for he knows he'll be shut down anyway. Yet the idea of being shut down by Ehlena irritates him. Acting extremely out of character, Rehv offers an apology for his behavior by extending his card to Ehlena in the hopes that maybe one day she'd need him. For what he couldn't say but he wants to be reachable by this beautiful and intriguing female.

Ehlena's initial reaction to Rehvenge may appear haughty on the surface but inside she's really confused by the male's attention. Besides, why would a male of obvious wealth be interested in her? She turns down his offering and refuses his card. But even after the handsome male leaves, Ehlena can't get him out of her mind. She forces her thoughts towards a clinical avenue as an excuse for her dwelling. Remembering the busted veins in Rehv's arm that suggests infection, Ehlena calls the male to question why he didn't have Havers tend to his condition. Rehv, the master manipulator, convinces Ehlena that what she really needs to do is meet him for dinner at his high rise penthouse. Ehlena says yes to his request and Rehv finds that he loves this female's acquiescence.

In a total spur of the moment act, Ehlena pilfers some penicillin tablets from the clinic pharmacy. She has to make this dinner about his health for her mind simply can't process any other means for her irrational behavior. It's upon her very arrival at Rehv penthouse that Ehlena realizes the two of them couldn't be any father apart in the social stratosphere. She makes the decision then and there that this "relationship" is going nowhere. She'll deliver the meds and leave. But as she stands outside his glass doors she can't bring herself to dematerialize. Instead she's transfixed by the obvious remorse that Rehv feels over her departure. She watches as he sits at a table elegantly set for two complete with flickering candles. He took the time to make the night special for her. It's when his head lifts up and he pierces her with amethyst eyes that Ehlena goes back on her earlier decision and once again walks though the sliding glass door, realigning both their fates.

Rehvenge is a complete giver when comes to pleasureing his female. It doesn't matter that she can't recipricate because of the dopamine's effects. He takes total satisification pleasuring Ehlena to the point that she can't even see straight. Yet Ehlena, wanting to return whatever pleasure that she can, offers Rehv her vein. It's the only part of her that she knows he can feel, taste and touch - her blood. But Rehv can only feel his worthlessness at her offering. Ehlena is far from too good for him, he shouldn't even be touching her much less be given the honor to take her vein. Except Rehvenge can't fully explain these thoughts for it would mean revealing his true identity. It's not just the need to hide his sympath nature that's holding him back, he's also reminded how many lives he's taken, the drugs he's sold, and that his body has been tainted by the princess. The last thing that Rehv wants to do is taint Ehlena. She represents all that is good and he won't blacken her with his dark baggage.

On the flip side, it's Ehlena that feels unworthly of Rehv. She lives one paycheck away from the streets. She's been shunned by the glymera. How would a male of Rehv's worth even be tempted by her. With these thoughts, all Ehlena can feel is anger and humilation. It's as she's thrusting her body into her clothes with all the determination to leave that Rehv stops her and takes her offering. He can't let her go. It's selfish and wrong, but he needs Ehlena.

Of course as always, one can't free fall through love forever before hitting rock hard earth. The walls that Rehv has paid in blood to contain his secret are crumbling. The charade is up, leaving him fighting a losing battle and is left with one option: Protect the ones he loves by returning to the sympath colony. In the loving need to drive Ehlena away for her own saftey, Rehvenge reveals all his ugly truths in the harshest way possible to ensure her hatred and her desire to never look for him. Rehv suceeds.

Don't you just love the cliffhanger review?? *wink*

First of all, I want to thank J.R. Ward for returning to the ROMANCE. 'Lover Avenged' was relationship central! There was romance throughout the novel and not just with Rehvenge and Ehlena but with Wrath and Beth and even with John Matthew and Xhex.

I loved Rehv and I thought that Ehlena was definitely worthy of him. I was worried about whether any female would be right for Rehv in my reader heart and I'm happy to report that I couldn't be more satisfied. Reading 'Lover Avenged' was like taking a long sigh of relief. 'Lover Enshrined' was such a disappointment although I want to stress that it was a disappointment only in the romantic sense. Ward still delivered.

The series itself is so much darker now than when it started with 'Dark Lover'. Those early days seem like eons ago and as Ward has evolved and built the series, I've been a willing follower. From what I've read, I can only guess that the series will continue to get even darker.

Next in the BDB series: John Matthew and Xhex in 'Lover Mine'. Supposed release date is this time next year.

ARC Review: Hot In Here

ARC Review: Hot In Here by Sophie Renwick

Releases June 2, 2009

She wasn’t his kind of dish—until someone turned up the heat…

Celebrity chef and infamous ladies’ man Bryce Ryder can’t believe the thoughts he’s having about his old friend Jenna McCabe. She’s always been the shy girl-next-door, but when some bad publicity threatens everything he’s built, Jenna gets down to business— and shows a side of herself that is take-charge and totally irresistible.

Soon things are heating up in and out of the
kitchen—and all of Jenna’s secret fantasies about Bryce start coming true. But will she be the one to tame his heart, or is the sexy chef just indulging
another one of his cravings?

Sophie Renwick may be a debut name with a debut book but don't doubt her "new" craft for Ms. Renwick is also the seasoned and amazingly talented Charlotte Featherstone whose become a wonderful fixture for many in Blogland. This lovely lady is the author of 'Addicted', a favorite book of many and I'm also happy to add that she's a complete hussy for delicious heroes having written so many yummy bad boys herself. When you open up a Sophie Renwick/Charlotte Featherstone novel, you can be sure that your inner hussy will be sublimely satisfied.

Bryce Ryder is the ultimate player. After being burned before by a woman who nearly took him for everything he had, Bryce is terrified of commitment and has resolved to only partake in the one night stand. It's so much safer. Besides his number one loves are his restaurant and TV show, Heating It Up. When a gossip rag misconstrues the context of Bryce's words, he suddenly finds his reputation in ruins, not to mention the fact that Greenwood Financial is now ready to back out of a major deal that has become near and dear to Bryce's heart. He's got four weeks to turn this catastrophe around and Bryce knows just the woman who can pull him out of hot water.

Jenna McCabe is turning 28 today and she's going to get her birthday wish - Bryce naked in her bed. For ten years she's been in love with him and enough is finally enough. Well aware of Bryce's reputation with woman, Jenna has a master plan on how to get Bryce and keep him. His call for help is the perfect opportunity too. Owning her own marketing firm and working tirelessly to build a solid reputation, Jenna knows she can help Bryce with his current dilemma.

Meeting Jenna for dinner at his restaurant, Bryce is appalled by Jenna's suggestions on how to recoup his reputation. He didn't ask that his fans be house wives. But unfortunately they're what bring in the money and they're also the ones that his words offended. He has to make amends but not by cooking with the elderly. No way! There must be something wrong with Jenna. Not only does she propose this horrible plan but she's also acting totally out of character. His best friend has suddenly developed a back bone where he's concerned and Bryce can't help but stand up and take notice and that's not the only thing that's standing up. Jenna totally has his blood fired up and his cock standing at complete attention. He wants her. Bryce wants shy Jenna McCabe. What is going on?

Jenna's in the mood to play a little hard to get. She certainly just can't hop into bed with Bryce the first night. That would be too easy for Bryce and Jenna would just be one more in a long list of romps in the sack. But Jenna's plans are soon tossed out the window after Bryce shows up unannounced at her apartment carrying a steaming hot platter of something that smells positively sinful.

Plying her with dessert is exactly what Bryce has in mind. He's not at her apartment for sex, he just wants an excuse to try and understand these new feelings that are bombarding him over Jenna. But his good intentions fly out the window when Jenna opens her apartment door dressed in a silky chemise that leaves little to the imagination. As one hot and delicious spoonful of custard dripping with chocolate and Carmel leads to another, Bryce and Jenna are soon overwhelmed by the eroticism of the moment and it's not long before these two get hot and heavy between the sheets.

Completely humiliated by last night's bed play and afraid that it all was one big fat lie on Bryce's part, Jenna escapes the confines of her apartment and heads to work. Shaken to the core, Jenna could kick herself for deviating from her plan of playing hard to get. Bryce's nonstop phone calls and unexpected visit at her office with breakfast is making things even worse. Jenna needs time to think and plan her next form of attack. Besides her emotions are completely raw and a moment to regroup is really all she wants. Well that and Bryce's cookie dough pancakes!

Now Jenna has a new plan with the help of her gorgeous and confident employee, Rachael. Give Bryce a little dose of what he's been dishing out all these years: hot sex with no strings.

When a marketing deal near and dear to Jenna's heart goes sour, Jenna hightails it Italy to save the account. Bryce is steaming over the fact that Jenna didn't tell him she was leaving the country. If it wasn't for his brother, who unbeknownst to both Bryce and Jenna is conspiring with Jenna's sister Sarah in an effort to get Bryce and Jenna together once and for all, he never would have known she was gone. But Bryce sees where he can possibly take advantage of this situation by whisking Jenna away to his Tuscan villa.

The days in Tuscany with Bryce are some of the best days of Jenna's life. In a perfectly sublime moment, Bryce tells her that he loves her. While her own heart has been engaged for years on end, Jenna's hesitant to tell Bryce her own words of love. She still can't believe that what he's saying is real. But what Jenna doesn't say she shows Bryce her love with her body as the two embark on some of the steamiest love scenes in the novel.

Of course when everything is just starting to feel secure for Jenna, disaster strikes. A rather nasty email was sent earlier to Bryce by his conniving brother Trey, all in the effort to get Bryce to realize his love for Jenna. While at the time Bryce thought of Trey's words as cruel, it did work to get his attention. But having the email read by Jenna turns the words into a whole new context.

Horrified by her behavior and her near proclamation of love to Bryce, Jenna is hit hard by the email's revelations. Those hesitant feelings with regards to Bryce's words of love are proving not only to be her savior, but reaffirming her earlier denied knowledge that Bryce simply can't commit. Humiliated, Jenna takes off for some much needed time alone on her family's farm.

Bryce is not about to let the one woman he's ever loved get away. With true heroics, Bryce tracks Jenna down with the drive of a hungry lion stalking its prey. He will win her heart no matter what it takes. But as more lies pile up, Bryce needs to do some fast talking or he may very well end up the way he'd always imagined - alone.

'Hot In Here' was a fantastic escape read. Bryce is an intense hero who is originally a bit frightened by the sudden spark of lust that he feels for his long time friend. But he shows real strength with his fast and determined commitment to Jenna. If anything, Jenna is the one with commitment issues, IMO, but much of that can be blamed on Bryce's earlier behavior with women.

Also, food has never read so sexy. I've developed new meaning to words like custard, gelato, and Carmel. Chocolate needs no added eroticism, it's a dessert that's always been associated with sex and boy was I reminded why.

B+

After searching voraciously on the Internet for everything 'Covet', I stumbled upon a possible summary listed by Mary Monroe on Amazon.com in the 'Covet: A Novel of The Fallen Angels' Forum. She writes that this is the summary listed by the publisher's catalog.

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Black Dagger Brotherhood novels...

First book in a spellbinding new series of mortal sin- and immortal love

Vin diPietro long ago sold his soul to his business, and he's good with that-until fate intervenes in the form of a tough-talking, Harley-riding, self-professed savior. Review: At Love's Command

Review: At Love's Command by Samantha Kane

Sophia Middleton has been waiting twelve years for Ian Witherspoon to return and marry her. A child when they were betrothed, Sophie has become a beautiful young woman who has never been allowed to leave her country home or enter society. Preyed upon by her vicious father and older brother, Sophie has longed for the day Ian would rescue her and whisk her away.

Ian Witherspoon and Derek Knightly became best friends during the war, and returned as lovers. Wrapped up in one another Ian allows another two years to pass before the desire or a wife and children prompt him to recall his dull, little country fiancée.
When he finally sees Sophie again Ian is repentant and determined to make a marriage work between him, Sophie and Derek. Derek refuses to enter into a
marriage of three despite Ian's determination, unwilling to share his lover and afraid of losing him to the beautiful and vulnerable Sophie.

Sophie's vulnerability, however, hides a core of strength and the combination enthralls and seduces both men. An apt pupil, Sophie learns trust and passion from Ian, and tutors Derek in the ecstasy of surrender. Love will conquer their fears, but is it enough to defeat those who would tear them apart?

Samantha Kane was brought to my attention by her crazed, whoops! I mean loving fan Barbara of Happily Forever After. The girl has excellent taste and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to read a novel that is so beloved by such a wonderful friend. I didn't really know what to expect but I did know one thing: I was going to get plenty of hot sex to satisfy my inner and at times, insatiable hussy heart.

'At Love's Command' is a tale of three very tortured souls who find healing in the arms of each other. First there is Ian Witherspoon. As the second or third son of an Earl (I can't remember which), Ian went off to war on the continent as was quite the norm for his station. Word gets around the camps that Ian is invincible after having diving into battle time and again and coming out alive with barely a single wound. He becomes known as the Captain who can't die. Ian cares not for his fellow soldiers thoughts for he knows the he could very well die, luck is just on his side. Little does he know that his prowess has caught the attention of young lieutenant.

Lieutenant Derek Knightly has seen the worst of death. He's lost so many friends and is haunted to the point where sleep is no longer an option. Derek seeks out Ian in the hopes of befriending a soul that has the inability to die and the stories of Captain Ian Witherspoon is proof of his invincibility.

At first Ian doesn't know what to do with the young and beautiful lieutenant but the two eventually become fast and inseparable friends and it's no surprise when the two soldiers begin to share a lover, Dolores. No sooner does Ian start to have strange feelings for Derek. He's never lusted for a man in his life but when Derek and Ian are making love to Dolores, Ian can't help but feeling more aroused by his male friend. Derek shares these same pensive thoughts but when horror strikes and Dolores is killed, a separation of grief occurs between the two men before their yearnings can be explored. For months they hardly speak but the sexual tension is rampant. Both men desire the other but neither has the courage to act. Finally Derek takes the initiative and seduces Ian. *fans self* Arguably one of the best scenes in the book.

Now back from war, Derek and Ian are still devoted lovers. Ian's love for Derek has become so great that exile from his family for his lifestyle choice doesn't overly bother him. He has Derek and he'll never set him free no matter what the circumstance. But as a couple of years pass, Ian has come to the conclusion that both he and Derek aren't whole. Something vital is missing and it's not just the laugh of his lover but a deep seeded need within himself as well. He desires Derek and he wants him in his life forever, but Ian also desires children and not only for himself. He wants a wife for him and Derek. A woman who will become part of both their souls.

Sophie Middleton has led a horrible and tragic life consumed of fear and hate. The only light at the end of a dark and seemingly endless tunnel is a marriage betrothal signed when she was a young girl. Ian Witherspoon promised that when she was old enough he'd come for her and she would be his wife. Now, years later, he's finally summoned her for their wedding and Sophie couldn't be more scared in her life.

Derek is not happy with Ian's decision to marry and tries endlessly to dissuade him. The jealousy over having to share Ian with another is eating away at his heart but this is only masking the true dilemma. Derek is not nor has ever been free with his heart. After having been the witness of so many deaths, Ian is still the only being strong enough to withstand life. Of course this is only Derek's rational. While the nightmares continue to plague his nights, Derek fears that this new bride will only make his emotions more raw and his dreams more terrifying with the absence of his lover and friend. To Derek's horror, he's finding himself entranced by Sophie. He can't bear to fall in love for her defense against death has never been proven. He cannot have a repeat of Dolores's fate. He doesn't think he could survive that type of loss again.

Ian is immediately entranced by his new and beautiful bride. But there's something sad and desperate lurking beneath the liquid innocence of her eyes. Her secrets are soon revealed though. It becomes quickly obvious that her father has brow-beaten his daughter into strict submissiveness that has nearly destroyed her beautiful spirit. In addition, Ian soon discovers that Sophie has also been brutally raped repeatedly by her evil brother Harold who thankfully is touring the continent or he'd find himself the recipient of a bullet hole to the chest. With painstaking tenderness, Ian seduces Sophie and teaches her the exquisite pleasure that can be attained while making love. Soon Sophie opens to Ian her body and soul at his insatiable request.

But life is still incomplete. Derek has continued to maintain his distance but Sophie is slowly plowing through his thick walls of defence. Unknowingly, Sophie captures his heart to Derek's eternal chagrin. But before the words of love can be spoken, Sophie is taken from Derek and Ian's safe embrace. An evil plot of revenge has been revolving around the three's burgeoning relationship. Desperate to find their wife and destroy her enemies, Derek and Ian take off to save the woman they love. They can only hope that they are not too late.

'At Love's Command' was a wonderful read that definitely satisfied my inner hussy. Whereas I loved the highly intense and sexual qualities to Ian's and Derek's relationship, I didn't yearn for the scenes between Ian and Sophie. I truly found myself craving more page time with Derek. There is only one totally hot and intense love scene between Derek and Sophie alone that leaves you panting for more. In addition, I thought that Derek's charismatic and ultimately primitively sexual nature overpowered Ian to the point where I didn't even want or need him around.

While Sophie has led an extremely tortured life, she got on my nerves on numerous occasions. In her heart she trusts and loves Ian but she continually withholds herself from him. For instance, she's terrified to tell him that she can't dance. How strange. The man knows about the horrors of her past and unequivocally accepts her but she's scared to death over his opinion on her dancing abilities? It left me raw. Also, some of the language had me breaking from the fantasy and I couldn't help but giggle. 'At Love's Command' really required a suspension of reality for me to stay focused. Mainly this was during the dialogue scenes between the main and secondary characters. On the flip side I was totally engrossed during the sex scenes. LOL! Weird, I know but that's how it happened for me.

Interview With Rhyannon Byrd And Giveaway!!

Rhyannon Byrd has just released the second novel in her Primal Instinct Series, 'Edge of Danger'. This thrilling trilogy of back to back releases features three siblings and the rising darkness within them. 'Edge of Danger' is Saige's story. The wild sister that traverses the globe in search of special artifacts that she believes are linked to her family's bloodline and the inner beasts they conceal.

Back Cover Blurb for 'Edge of Danger':

Saige Buchanan travels the world studying her dark past, guided by a strange gift that enables physical objects to tell her their secrets. Yet nothing can protect her from her family's sadistic enemies. Until—in her hour of greatest need—she encounters a mysterious, impossibly sexy shape-shifter.

Sent to find the woman whose darkness has yet to awaken, Michael Quinn battles his primal hunger for Saige. He alone can help her lay claim to her full powers. Yet in doing so, he will destroy her innocence, and mark her as his forever….

Joining me today is Rhyannon Byrd, who has agreed to let me pick her brain for answers with regards to her Primal Instinct Series and the secrets it hides within its pages.

Welcome Rhyannon to Lovin' Me Some Romance!

First, congratulations on the amazing book covers. Truly, they were what initially drew my eye and followed quickly by my pocketbook when I discovered the refreshing twists you've created with the current paranormal myths. While it's no secret that I love my vampires, I must say that I was extremely interested in reading a different offering within the genre. Can tell me a little about the behind the scenes and what inspired you to write the Primal Instinct Series? Did you intentionally set out to create something "out of the box"?

Thanks so much for inviting me to be a part of your blog and for the congrats on the Primal Instinct covers! :) I couldn’t be happier with them, and I can’t wait to see what the Harlequin Art Dept. comes up with for the second trilogy. I’ve already submitted the cover art forms for Books 4-6, so I’m on pins and needles waiting to see them!

When I set out to write the Primal Instinct series, it was my hope that I would be able to create something that was different from anything I’d done before. I love vampires and shape-shifters, so it was important to me that I keep them a part of this new world—but I really wanted to use this series to push myself and see just what my imagination could come up with that really was “out of the box.” :) I began with a familiar paranormal concept, saying that shape-shifters and vampires do live hidden among us…and then took it a step further, asking myself, “But what if there was something more?” And once I asked that question, the world of the ancient clans began to take shape. I loved exploring the idea of making these familiar paranormal species part of a greater whole that included a broad range of other, often unique races. Though we’ve met some of them already, like the Merrick and the Casus, there are still others that will be introduced as the series continues, and I hope readers will find them as fascinating as I do!

The Merrick, while inherently good and a physical and mental aspect of your hero/heroines, again, is very unique to the paranormal romance genre. Although it drinks blood, the classification of vampire doesn't really fit, in my opinion. I also didn't particularly see it as a shape-shifter but rather a "hulked" out human, if that makes any sense. Can you clarify what the Merrick is and how it's unique attributes make it such an effective killer of it's nemesis, the Casus? Also, does it's abilities differ in male vs. female?

Although they do drink blood and experience a change in their physical appearance when their “primal blood” rises within them, the Merrick are, like you’ve said, different from the vampires and shape-shifters in the series. They are part of the same collection of non-human races referred to as the “ancient clans,” but unlike the shape-shifters, the Merrick do not change into or manifest characteristics of a specific animal. Instead, their human-looking bodies can go into Merrick form, which is different for the males and females of the species. Although Saige, the heroine in EDGE OF DANGER, has fangs in her Merrick form, her physical appearance doesn’t alter like her brothers’. Her face doesn’t change shape, with her nose flattening as her bones expand, and she doesn’t have talons or bulk up with heavy layers of muscle. She does, however, find that her senses become much sharper, and she also becomes considerably stronger. There’s also a bit of a difference in the way that the males and females of the species feed, which you’ll learn more about in Saige’s story. ;) And when it comes to the Casus, it was the Merrick’s physical size and strength that made them such a favorite of the Casus’s, their deaths providing a greater rush of power and pleasure than many of the other species. The original Merrick were some of the most physically powerful of the ancient clans, and it’s that strength that gives their awakening bloodlines the ability to face off so successfully against the Casus in battle.

Ian Buchanan, hero of 'Edge of Hunger', was terrified of releasing the Merrick and it bled upon the relationship with his heroine. How will his sister, Saige, handle her own darkness within and the releasing of the Merrick?

Unlike Ian, Saige has always been a believer, and so she faces the awakening of her inner Merrick in a completely different manner than her eldest brother. Saige has devoted her entire life to learning as much as she can about the Merrick, fully prepared to embrace her destiny when the time comes. She knows that feeding from a lover won’t kill him, and she’s prepared to do so…when she finds the right man. Although she’s smart enough to understand the dangers that now surround her, she doesn’t fear her awakening on a personal level in the way that her brothers do. Instead, her fear comes from what she suspects the awakening of the Merrick bloodlines will mean for the world, since it also means the return of the Casus.

Little has been revealed about Quinn, Saige's hero in 'Edge of Danger', other than the fact that he's a shape-shifter and he works for the Consortium. Can you give us any hints about his character and Saige's impact on him?

Like many of his friends, Quinn is a man with a past that continues to haunt him. Without giving too much away, I can tell you that he’s spent the past five years doing his best to shut himself down emotionally. When he meets Saige, it’s like being shocked back to life, and he finds himself torn between a desperate craving for closeness with her, and the fear of what he’ll become if he allows himself to lower his guard. He knows that it would be madness to fall for the female Merrick—and yet, his need for her is unlike anything he’s ever experienced. Although he does everything he can to ignore the driving needs of his body, giving her the cold shoulder proves impossible, even for a man as shut down as Quinn. He is like a wild animal who’s been chained by his own distrustful nature and fear of being hurt, who suddenly finds the key to his freedom in the last place he expects to make such a stunning discovery. Saige’s fiery, tempestuous nature is the perfect antidote to Quinn’s stifled emotional state, making it impossible for him to keep his distance. He’s a man who wants desperately to love and be loved, but is afraid of making himself vulnerable…until he discovers that instead of a weakness, his love for Saige is actually his greatest strength. I had such a wonderful time with Quinn’s character, and I really hope you guys will love him as much as I do!

The Consortium is a very secretive organization charged with watching and the collection of data on paranormal activity throughout the world. While it played a fairly significant role in 'Edge of Hunger' there still seemed to be a lot that has yet to be unveiled. Due to the fact that Quinn is a member, will 'Edge of Danger' be exploring more of the Consortium's purposes?

I’ve tried to make it so that each book reveals a bit more about the world of the ancient clans, so readers will definitely learn more about the Consortium with each installment. In Book 2, more is revealed about the interaction between the Watchmen and the Consortium, as well as the Collective Army, whose mission it is to hunt down and kill those who aren’t human. We also learn that Quinn’s Watchmen unit has been put under judicial review by the Consortium for choosing to interfere in the brewing war between the awakening Merrick and the Casus. As the series continues, the Watchmen will be forced to take a closer look at their relationship with the Consortium and make some important decisions about the future of their organization.

Congratulations on contracting three more books in the Primal Instinct series! And once again they'll be releasing back to back starting April 2010. What will be the focus of these next installments?

Thanks! I’m thrilled to say that the next trilogy is going to continue the series with stories about the Watchmen. I’m currently working on Book 4, which is shape-shifter Aiden Shrader’s story, and the title is TOUCH OF SEDUCTION. Book 5 will be Kierland Scott’s story, and Book 6 will be about his brother Kellan. Not only do we see more of the shape-shifters in this trilogy, but we also meet the Granger brothers, who are Deschanel vampires, and I’m getting such a kick out of their characters. ;) As the fight against the Casus intensifies, there is also a new evil creeping out of the shadows, its intent to not only destroy the Watchmen…but to spread the war across each of the clans. I’m hoping to have some more information about the trilogy up at my website in the next few months, so I hope everyone will stop by when they have the time. There’s going to be a Cast of Characters and a Glossary of Terms posted for the series, along with some special sneak peeks into Aiden’s story. I hope you guys will enjoy them! :)

And before I go, I just want to give a big THANKS to VampFanGirl for inviting me to stop by! I had a wonderful time!!!

All the best,

Rhy
