Interview with Christine Wells & Giveaway!

I stumbled across a mention of Wicked Little Game by Christine Wells on Anna Campbell's website. A Marquis, longing hopelessly for another man's wife, is tempted to take up an offer from her dastardly husband: Spend one passion filled night with the woman that's plagued his thoughts for years in return for the criminal sum of ten thousand pounds. Needless to say my interest was immediate and I googled the unknown author, read an excerpt and promptly fled the office for the nearest bookstore to pick up my own copy. My instincts were spot on too after I finished the book and loved every moment of 'Wicked Little Game'. You can read my thoughts in my review.

When I contacted Christine to gush my fangirl love for 'Wicked Little Game', you can only imagine the embarrassing happy dance that erupted when she replied to thank me and offer a signed copy of my precious to giveaway. Yay! I'm so excited to share this author with you.

Please join me in welcoming Christine Wells to Lovin' Me Some Romance!

1. What was your inspiration for 'Wicked Little Game'?

My initial inspiration for WICKED LITTLE GAME was the movie INDECENT PROPOSAL, but the story veered wildly from the premise of a man paying an enormous sum for one night with another man's wife. I had Lady Sarah, who has suffered the pain and humiliation of her husband's infidelity for years and Lord Vane, who met her too late--after she was already married. He has longed for her ever since. And then Sarah's husband offers Vane one night with her for ten thousand pounds. But it's not the money, it's Vane's honor that would be the true price of the bargain.

I deliberately haven't watched the movie since beginning the book and I can't quite remember the ins and outs of it. But that premise was intriguing and with a lot of tweaking, it fitted nicely into a Regency historical romance.

2. I noticed that Jardine, a secondary character in 'Wicked Little Game', was getting his own story in 'Sweetest Little Sin'. Is this going to be a loosely tied series?

The hero and heroine of SWEETEST LITTLE SIN, Jardine and Louisa, were secondary characters in THE DANGEROUS DUKE and I had so much demand for their story from readers, I decided to write that one next. Jardine also appears briefly in WICKED LITTLE GAME. All my books stand alone but some feature common characters. I have a full explanation on my website: http://www.christine-wells.com/extras.html

3. When writing about a difficult heroine, you run the risk of turning readers off from her plight. Was this a fear you had with Lady Sarah Cole?

Oh, yes, absolutely. Sarah is flawed and stubborn and proud. She was so real to me that I would have had a lot of trouble 'softening' her or trying to make her more obviously likeable, but actually, my editor didn't ask me to change her at all. I'm so delighted that readers seem to have understood why she acted the way she did and liked her in spite of her flaws.

4. A follow up question (in a way): Have characters ever "argued" with you on where they want to go in the story or do they pretty much do what you tell them to do?

I don't plot in advance, so once I have a central premise and some turning points in mind, my characters drive the action. Sometimes I have to accept that a turning point or a scene I really wanted to write later in the book simply isn't appropriate, given the way my characters behave on the page. When I'm writing well, it feels as if the story is going on without me in some parallel universe and my job is to transcribe it as best I can. So my characters don't argue with me, but if something's off in the way the story reads on the page, I have to go back and watch and listen harder to what's happening over there to get it right. It sounds nuts, doesn't it? LOL

5. Are there any plans for Vane's brothers getting their own story?
I don't have any immediate plans to write Vane's brothers' stories--that was definitely not my intention in including them in WICKED LITTLE GAME. I think series with brothers have been done quite a lot and I don't want to go down that road at this stage. However, if I was writing a heroine and one of Vane's brothers turned out to be perfect for her, I'd certainly use him. They are a gorgeous collection of men!

6. It says on your website that you have a Bachelor of Laws and attempted writing a crime thriller. Will you ever decide to revisit that genre? Or do you potentially see yourself using the degree for another romance genre like contemporary? Would you ever even consider writing in another genre at all?

No, crime thrillers were not my bag at all, sadly! I don't think I'll ever stop writing historicals but I might branch out into other romance subgenres. It would be fun to use the law degree--or rather, my experience as a lawyer--in some form or other, but I have to think of a good slant. The day to day life of a corporate lawyer would scarcely be riveting to the general public!

7. In 'Wicked Little Game' you brought to life forbidden sexual tension as well as some explosive love scenes. I've always thought an author's ability to provoke such feeling, not only in their characters but in their readers as well, is a form of art. Do you find it difficult to write sexual tension? Does a lot of your ability to capture those feelings rely heavily on your characters or the nature of the story?

Thank you, what a compliment! I think you're right--the level of sexual tension depends a lot on the set-up of the story and on the characters. Because of its premise, WICKED LITTLE GAME is about two characters who begin the story negotiating their relationship in terms of sex. When I have the right character and situation, I can really feel the charge and the tension when I'm writing. I might finish a scene and realize I haven't breathed for a while. :) Love scenes are pivotal in my books. You can show ten times more about character and the nuances of the hero and heroine's relationship in a love scene than in any other. I find them endlessly fascinating to write.

8. Me and my blogger friends have a love for what we affectionately call "Hussy Reading Material". Do you have any go to romance authors that you prefer when or if you're in need of more erotic romance reading material?

Oh, hey, maybe you all need to give me some recommendations! I tend to enjoy the hotter historical romances that aren't specifically erotic romance, like Lisa Kleypas, Liz Carlyle, Anna Campbell. Denise Rossetti writes fabulous and intelligent erotica (and she's also a friend and critique partner, so I'm biased:). Tawny Weber and Kathleen O'Reilly write fantastic Blazes and Annie West writes superbly nuanced love scenes in her Presents romances. The most important thing for me is that I'm invested in the characters. Once they are real people to me, they can explore a lot of territory and I'll follow.

Thank you so much for having me here today. I hope you will all give me recommendations for your "Hussy Reading Material". I'll take copious notes! One reader who comments will win a signed copy of WICKED LITTLE GAME.

Thanks TBQ!!! It's always great to get recommendations from fabulous authors like Christine Wells.

Oh, you should definitely give WLG a chance. I'm generally pretty picky about my histoical reads and this one was fantastic from cover to cover. If you've read Jewel's 'Scandal' and liked it, then you're bound to enjoy WLG too.

;) VFG

Good Luck Barbara!!

This sure sounds like a great book.
What is there not to like.

And oooooh hussy reading material, yup know some of those, even if I am yet to read them.

Hm, recs of my own, haven't really dwelled in the world of hussy reading that long yet. But you can never go wrong with JR Ward, and S.Kenyon.

I am in :D

Hi, Christine and VFG!! Wonderful interview. I absolutely adored "Wicked Little Games" (thank you VFG for the rec). Vane was the epitome of a great historical hero!! I loved his character.

You don't have to enter me in this contest because I was lucky enough to meet Ms. Wells at RWA and have a signed copy already. But, best of luck to all who enter.

And to whoever wins...you are going to LOVE this book!!

Great interview. Wicked Little Game sounds good. Love your book covers.

For historicals, I would recommend Jess Michaels. For contemporary, I would recommend Maya Banks and Lauren Dane.

Very fun interview. I liked that you said sometimes when you finish a scene you notice you haven't breathed for awhile. As a reader, the same thing happens to me during certain scenes :)

As far as hussy material, JR Ward always brings out my inner hussy, and so does Allyson James.

Hi! That was a terrific interview :) I liked what Christine had to say about her characters going along in an alternate universe lol, it's not as nutty as it sounds - some of your best writers attest to the same. I think Charles Dickens was one of them !
Anyway, the Wicked Little Game sounds like a super duper read, thanks so much for the chance to win and hope your week is bright :)

Carolyn Crane (aka CJ) said...

Great interview - you asked really good questions, and congrats to Christine! This does sounds like a doosie of a book. I really want to know what happens!! And I enjoyed your insights on writing and characters.

Oh, and for my hussy books? Megan Hart all the way.

Hi TBQ! Thanks for commenting today. Won't you give me some recommendations? Inquiring minds want to know:)

I love finding out what authors like to read, too. I'm sure you can trace all the influences in people's work if you look hard enough. Fascinating!

Christine Wells said...

Hi Barbara, thanks for dropping by:)

VFG, I haven't read SCANDAL yet, it's on my TBR pile. I've heard wonderful things about it, and also that the premise is similar to WLG. The way such things happen is very strange because we both must have been writing our stories at the same time, or thereabouts. I'm really looking forward to reading it.

Christine Wells said...

Hi Blodeuedd, great to see you here! Thanks for the recommendations. JR Ward and Kenyon are both very powerful writers. I'm not surprised they rank among your favourites.

Hi Wanda, thanks so much for commenting and for the compliment on my website. I have a talented webmistress, so I can't take the credit!

Oh, Barbara, lovely to 'see' you again! Thanks for the compliment on WLG. I'm still half in love with my hero, so it gives me a real thrill to hear that you liked him, too.

Hi VFG! Hi Christine! Christine, congratulations on Wicked Little Game. You know I think it's brilliant - I keep telling you ;-) VFG, so glad you loved this book too! I love spreading news of favorite reads around the place. I love all the authors Christine mentioned, by the way. Another fabulous Blaze author is an Aussie, Sarah Mayberry. If you like Tawny and Kathleen, you'll like Sarah too, I'd say.

Good luck for the contest, girls. Whoever wins is VERY, VERY lucky!

Christine Wells said...

CrystalGB, lovely to see you here. Yes, the cover is fantastic, isn't it? I've had the same cover artist for all of my books and he's marvelous at capturing the mood of a book.

Thanks for those recommendations. More great authors to add to my personal HRM list!

Ooooh, hussy reading material! You know me, I love that type! :)

I will confess to dissing a few deadlines to read this book two weekends ago. I hope my editor isn't lurking!) Well, I loved it. Totally work blowing off a few deadlines.

I found this book on the blog and knowing VFG's taste, had to get it. Plust the whole longing from afar thing totally sold me! That's my kind of read.

I liked the characters, and the heroine's 'realness'. I sometimes have a very difficult time relating to 'perfect' heroines, but the characters in this book were wonderful!

Looking forward to the next installment! A new fan!

And wonderful interview, too!

Christine Wells said...

Hi Tetewa, thanks for commenting:)

Leontine---

Thanks, I had a fun time with VFG on that interview. So nice to be asked intelligent questions!

Thanks Barbara!!! (((hugs)))

Fantastic recommendation Leontine! Seth, mmmmmmmm so yummy. He was a little crazed in his possession but it so worked for me.

Thanks CJ! I'm glad you enjoyed the interview!

Christine! 'Scandal' is amazing. And while there is some similarities with both your heroine's, I found that the exceptional writing, emotional depth, and darker tones of both novels is what has me recommending WLG to 'Scandal' lovers.

Anna! Seeing your comments are still catching me off guard! LOL! I've been admirer of yours since 'Claiming the Courtesan'. I'll admidt to being a lover of controversy and when I read what people were saying about CTC, I knew it was a novel for me. I loved CTC and 'Untouched'. It's shameful to say that while I have 'Tempt the Devil' in my TBR, I haven't had a chance to read it yet. Will remedy that soon though.

Thank you again for commenting on the interview.

;) VFG

Oooo, Charlotte! Love for afar is one of my faves too. Especially when it's the hero that's suffering.

*blushing* Christine. Thanks for all your kind words about my questions. And I know that I've already thanked you a million times but THANK YOU again for wanting to participate in the interview and giveaway.

'Behind Closed Doors' is another one of those yummy controversial romance reads that I adore. Seth's a bit of "stalker". I use the term loosely but some felt it was wrong. I thought it worked. Besides, Seth is HOT!

:) VFG

Oh Christine! You MUST read 'Addicted'. Soooooo goood! I've never cried or gotten so angry with a heroine in my life and miraculously, I ended the book completely in love with her! Charlotte's got mad skills. Much love to my fellow hussy!

;) VFG

malleycc said...

WOW great interview. I just started getting into the romance/hussy reading. I would love some good authors (preferrably that are at the library). So I don't have any recommendations. But I am writing down the ones listed.

Christine Wells said...

VFG, thanks again for having me here today and what a fantastic reception from your readers. I'm very chuffed!

You know, Vane got accused of veering into stalker territory, which really startled me. It's amazing how differently readers interpret certain acts and thoughts but it makes for a very rich and varied genre. One woman's stalker is another woman's... fantasy...?? no that didn't come out right, but I guess you know what I mean. I think it's very sexy being the focus of a man's whole attention but for me, he has to care on some level about what the heroine wants, too. I'll certainly be interested to read McKenna. I've no doubt she handled the issue very skilfully.

SCANDAL is one of those books I get a bit scared to read because I know it's going to be SO good. I picked it up at the Berkley signing in D.C. and I'm even more interested to read it, having your recommendation, VFG (because I *know* you have good taste!)I've loved other Jewel books so I'm sure to adore this one.

VFG, put down what you're reading now and pick up Anna Campbell's TEMPT THE DEVIL. I know you will love it! It's probably my favourite of Anna's, though the next one coming out, CAPTIVE OF SIN, has the most beautiful, tortured hero you will ever meet. And yes, I got to read it in manuscript form, and yes, I am gloating. :D

Thanks, VFG, for the recommendation on Charlotte. She was too modest to speak up herself! I will certainly check out ADDICTED. I find difficult heroines fascinating so it sounds like it's right up my alley.

No, thank YOU for asking me here today. LOL we could keep doing this, couldn't we? But seriously, it is a pleasure to chat about WICKED LITTLE GAME and I'm picking up great recommendations, so I'm enjoying myself!

Christine Wells said...

Malleycc, be my guest! If your library doesn't stock WICKED LITTLE GAME, I'm sure they'd order it in for you.

Thanks again Christine YOU ROCK.

Annie West said...

Thanks VFG and Christine for a really interesting interview. Even after reading all Christine's books, I want to know more about how she writes.

Christine, I so related to you talking about characters existing in a parallel universe and you transcribing. Isn't it wonderful when that happens? The most magical feeling.

One of the things I loved about WICKED LITTLE GAME was the fact that the premise was hot, I read the opening and it lived up to the premise and then I read the book and so did it. No wimping out in terms of plot or sensuality or characterisation. You know some stories that sound intriguing but then peter out? Not this one! A really terrific read.

I'm already looking forward to Louisa and Jardine's story.

Must say too how lovely it is to have my books included on your Hussy Reading Material list!

Hope you're busy writing your next book.

Annie

Hi Annie, lovely to see you here today and of course I couldn't fail to mention your wonderful books in my list of recommendations! I hope you noticed that I mentioned I have to be invested in the characters first so it's not just the love scenes, although those are fab also.

Very pleased to hear you say WLG lived up to the premise. The book practically wrote itself when I had the characters and premise down. There was so much to explore. Thanks so much for dropping in today:)

Waving at Annie!

Congrats on WLG, Christine! I loved the intensity of it, the pull at the reader's emotions. That's what gives love scenes (and the sex) that wonderful feeling of "OMG, I can't breathe!"
