Reviewette: Gilt and Midnight

Reviewette: Gilt and Midnight by Megan Hart, Naughty Bits Anthology

Back Cover Blurb: (From Author's Website)

Word of Miracula's unique beauty is known far throughout the land. But when
a dark fairie curses her with Desire, it is news of her insatiable lust that
attracts dozens would-be suitors to her door, as one by one they attempt to
break the curse by bringing her utter fulfillment.

Mira, the undisputed beauty of the land with half her face fair of eye and hair and the other half dark as midnight, almost had the perfect fairy tale. She lived with her beloved adopted parents that showered her with all the love and affection that she could ever have wished for. Yet when her rich and proud parents cast a beggar from their table they quickly discover the severity of their actions.

The beggar reveals herself as the Dark Fairie. Mira's parents, desperate to save their daughter from the curse that the Dark Fairie will undoubtedly bestow, begs to the fairie's heart. But the Dark Fairie says that she will not curse Mira for her parent's unthoughtfullness, she will instead gift her with desire. Only when Mira finds complete satisfaction will her parents be saved from ruin.

Immediately upon the Dark Fairy's departure, Mira is overcome by desire. It's not long before suitors near and far arrive to tempt the beautiful Mira and see if they can complete her. Yet no matter how many orgasms that Mira achieves, each coupling ends with her feeling empty. Innocence lost and her parents going mad from losing all the wealth they have come to horde to sudden taxes, Mira is desperate to find completion.

Three months after the Dark Fairie's gift, two men walk into Mira's garden. One fair and one dark. Gerard and Alain have a long history together. Brothers of each others hearts, they were once the best of friends until the Dark Fairie ruined their bond. Now cursed with desire that will not abate until they complete a woman. Hearing of Mira's own gift, the men approach her. Gerard, masterful and requires submissiveness from his partners, commands Mira to serve him. Although his slaps upon her rear sting, Mira finds great pleasure in serving him. Yet she finds the opposite kind of pleasure with Alain. With him, Mira can be mistress and orders Alain about to do even the most mundane of tasks to prove his devotion.

But despite the fact that Mira finds sexual gratification from both men individually, she has yet to feel complete. The men, wanting to fill her emptiness must overcome their own rift to give the beautiful maiden her satisfaction.

'Gilt and Midnight' wasn't what I have come to expect from Megan Hart. While romance isn't necessarily what the author is known for delivering, there is still her talent of evoking considerable emotion into her characters and thereby into her readers. 'Gilt and Midnight' holds no romance. But I'm not knocking it for that reason. 'Naughty Bits' is an anthology of EROTIC shorts so the lack of romance is now doubly expected. But if a story is lacking romance then I at least expect emotion. While still beautifully written, the short lacked any sort of emotion. It is erotic, that's a certainty, yet I expected more from the author that I've admired for a long time. An author that is just so brilliant, in my opinion, with bringing beauty to real life.

The more I read the more unsure I became, I think this might not be the book for me. Still thanks for a great review.

Ps. left something for you over at my blog :)

Hey girl... where have you been??!?!?! Missed you!
Great review. I just finished Tempted by Megan Hart... yea, hopefully I will be doing a review of that one tonight!

You know I always love your reviews. But I liked the honesty of your review (from your opin.). Because I know you are a huge Hart fan, I admired that in you!
Thanks... and get from under that rock... or pile of paperwork lol!!!

Hey Blodeuedd! What's up girl?!

Oh, I know, this short was really strange and not at all what I was expecting. Definitely erotic but no emotion. I felt nothing for the characters or for their plight.

Ooh yeah? I'm coming over!

Hey Cecile!

I'm so sorry that I missed your contest. I've been insanely BUSY lately!! And finally have some stuff to review. Stay tuned for my review of 'The Darkest Night'. :)

I'm really looking forward to your thoughts on 'Tempted'. It's not one of Hart's novels that I recommend to first time readers. But I liked the novel. Not so cool with the ending but overall, a really good read.

'Gilt and Midnight' was a toughy. I love LOVE Megan Hart and this just wasn't what I was expecting. But I really can't wait for 'Deeper' when it comes out in July. Her novels are amazing.

I'm out from under my rock! Yay!! Expect to see me around. *wink*

Yes strange not to see ya around, but happy you are back :D

I do want some emotions too, and after I had read your text, well all books can't be for everyone. I think that i wouldn't be able to connect with them, and I need to like at least someone

VampFanGirl said...

LOL, Blodeuedd! You all probably thought I fell off the face of the earth! Sorry about that.

Exactly, there has to be some emotion for readers to connect with. I was really bummed. This wasn't what I've come to expect from Megan Hart...

Hi VFG!

I find that some authors don't do novella length stories very well, the economy of words is too short for their writing style. Some of my favorite authors have not lived up to their potential with short stories. I wonder if that's the case with Megan Hart. I haven't read anything by this author, so I don't know. What do you think, have you read other shorts by Megan Hart?

Hey Dottie!

I think you're very right in your assumption. But I have read some great efforts by some of my fave authors.

And to give Megan Hart the benefit of the doubt, I haven't read any of her novella work. This is my first. Here's the thing though, her writing style was very different in this particular effort. First of all, it was a historical in a sense while I've only read her contemps. Secondly, it was told in kind of a fairy tale fashion... Can't really explain that thought but that's how I viewed it. And lastly, there was none of the emotion that I've come to expect from this author. I think that if the emotional connection had been present, I would have viewed this novella in a totally different light.

Blog ate my second post ***shaking its scrawny little neck... its choking***

Well... I am soooo looking forward to see what you have to say about my Maddox... **wondering if you fell in love with My Lords... crossing fingers**

Girl, if you would have called, I would have come and lifted that rock of you to come out from!! LOL!! Yes, you were missed!

I did not care too much for the ending either in Tempted, but was sucked in... I love how Megan Hart makes her characters very real... where you can almost view them as yourself, your neighbor, your sister... someone you know. I hopefully will be working on the review when I get home this evening... It is hubby and I's 3rd anniversay today... So, not sure if I am going to be able to get it finished or not... but I will my bestest!

When you need someone to lift the rock or shredd the paperwork.. call me! LOL!

Hey Lea! How's it goin'?!

OMG, at times life just scoops you up no matter what your initial intentions are. ;)

I'm so back logged on my reading. I've seriously had no time. But I was able to finish this novella and 'The Darkest Night' last night so I finally have some material to post.

Hey VFG...

Welcome back - I have missed your paw prints these last few days..

I am just going through the back catalogue on Harts book and i think i will drag this one some point this week to get my own view of it..

I like so much things about Ms. Hart style, her pace her language of the day so to speak....

However in every book i read by her - she has always skirted that line just below a menage - and i am pleased she ventured there - from your thoughts - the emotional element that is needed to make a menage work is clearly not there, and with no smut to cover up the gaps - it does sound woeful..

I am willing to chance it and get an all rounded feel of this author - everything else i have read by her, while i might not liked or love some of her theme - i was always impress with the end result...

Really appreciated your thoughts on this book - definitely reading this weekend.

Hi Cecile!

You've pegged on one of my favorite aspects of Megan Hart's writing. "I love how Megan Hart makes her characters very real... where you can almost view them as yourself, your neighbor, your sister... someone you know." I couldn't have said my thoughts any better. And you know, the sex is real too. It's not some perfectly choreographed moment. It's real. It's hasty and it's messy. I love it! And these characters go through ordeals that could really happen to anyone. Hart is one gifted girl.

Didn't you think that there was a conversation missing at the end of 'Tempted'?? I really wanted to read the discussion between Anne and James and why she was going to do what she planned on doing (trying not give out spoilers here). lol!

Anyway, with regards to the Lords *sigh* I liked TDK night but it wasn't my fave. I'll explain later.

OMG, the rock of life is HEAVY!! lol! But I think I've safely manuvered around it's wide berth. For now anyway. *wink*

HI E.H.!

I've been woefully absent lately. I have a lot of blogs to catch up on too. Expect me to swing by your spot later. :)

Despite my dislike of 'Gilt and Midnight' I'm glad that I read it. It certainly has given me another view of Hart and her versatility. I really think she wrote this with every intention of it be straight eroitca. And like I mentioned in my review, I don't necessarily go to Hart for the romance, rather for her real and beautiful take on life.

"everything else i have read by her, while i might not liked or love some of her theme - i was always impress with the end result..." I so agree with your statement here, E.H. Describes my thoughts perfectly. Even though 'Tempted' wasn't my favorite, I appreciated it for the new outlook it provided me. It gave a very real answer to that "What if...".

I'm definitely looking forward to reading your own thoughts on this novella.

Hi VFG!

I can't help it, it's the faerie tale part that's getting me, I love them. I've read them all so many times, and this sounds close to one that I really love, except for the gratuitous sex of course. I love the faerie tale where the heroine is cursed and must find her way out from under it. I took a whole class in college about faerie tales and their origins. (It was an elective that served as an English credit, very easy 'A' as long as you didn't mind writing papers. I have the gift of gab, even when writing....lolol)

Just knowing an author used this as a basis for the story kind of makes me want to read it. If not for your review, I would be sorely tempted.

I am glad to see you posting again, I missed your witty words.

((hugs))

Hey, wonderful, honest review! I haven't read this brief but i will say, Hart has my highest respect as an author. That girl can make you feel things....

And I see you're on Lucien's book now...don't let Anya bug ya! lol!

VampFanGirl said...

Hey Dottie,

Well, since you're a big fan of faerie tales then you just might like 'Gilt and Midnight'. Wow, what a cool class. I would have definitely been interested in learning the origins of faerie tales.

Sigh, it does feel nice to be back on Blogger. Thanks for missing me.

(((hugs))) VFG

Thanks Charlotte! Hart can definitely bring on the feelings. ;) Let me know what you think of 'Gilt and Midnight' after you get the chance to read it.

Yup, I'm starting Lucien tonight and I'm working on Maddox's review. So far, I'm likin' Anya. I enjoyed her in 'The Darkest Night'...
